Poor Performance from Router MI424WR

Purchased Verizon internet for the first time a few months ago, was told the coverage was 200 feet from router.  My home is 2 stories, have no internet in lower level (router is on top floor), cannot get signal on deck, which is literally 50 feet from router.  Is this what I should expect for my money?  I used to have cable modem and separate router, and had zero problems in 3-story, 3500 sq ft house. Should I have to buy an extender, isn't there other options Verizon can offer me for what I am paying?  Or maybe someone has a suggestion on how to fix.  Really disappointed in this service, plus if you try to call for support, the wait time is always over an hour.  How can a company get away with this? Really digusted as I work from home on the net, and can only work in 50% of my living space.  Thanks for any suggestions. Steve

I am not sure what you mean by "change the channel that the router is using for wireless devices and see if that helps"? Trying to get someone on the phone of even arrange a service visit is all but impossible, a sad state of affairs for a such a large company that lauds itself on customer service.  I long for cable again. FYI, you're talking to other customers here.  If you want a response from Verizon, you need to call or chat with them. To adjust WiFI settings on the router, you'll need to login to it's administrative management web page.  Typical installs will put it at http://192.168.1.1 (go ahead, click on that link).  The username is "admin".  The password is printed on the router's label, unless you've changed it. A simple google search for "mi424wr manual" will locate the documentation on Verizon's web site.  If that doesn't answer your questions about how to adjust the settings, post back and you'll get some more help. If you can't figure this out yourself (with help from forums like this or other online resources), you'd be better off hiring a local network tech to do the work rather than a Verizon tech visit.  They typically do not do this type of in home support.  If you do get Verizon to send a tech for this, they will charge you a lot of money for it as it's not a problem with their system. Enjoy.

I'm getting poor performance from my apple TV, will plugging in my airport express via ethernet to apple tv increase its performance (poor wi-fi signal)

Yes, though it is less ideal than what I suggested earlier. You would need to place your AirPort Express in a location approximately midway between your AirPort Extreme Base Station and the TV. Then, using AirPort Utility, configure it to "extend a wireless network".
It may help. Bear in mind the signal thus "extended" by the Express can only be as good as the signal it can receive from the Extreme. That is the reason for selecting its appoximate midway location.
    Read about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
Scroll down to "Wirelessly Extended Network (802.11n)" for a picture.
This solution requires an all-Apple wireless network. No third party stuff.
You mentioned using Ethernet. That would be a better idea. Scroll down to "Roaming Network (Ethernet-connected Wi-Fi base stations)" for a picture. In your case, the longer the Ethernet cable - hence the closer you can move the Express to the TV - the better

  • Poor performance from airport express u

I have a time capsule as my base station connected to a DSL router.  I have to AP Express units.  I'm in a building with concrete walls.  The time capsule is at one end of the condo, the first express is in the middle and the second express at the other end.  Total distance between the time capsule and the furthest express units is about 12 meters (40 feet).  I get the best throughput when I connect to the wireless device that's embedded with the router.  Very similar results when in the same room as the time capsule, but markedly (10X) poor results when I'm near the farthest express unit.  Both express units are configured to 'extend' the wireless network hosted by the time capsule.  In addition, the two express units keep going off and on line like yoyos.

Think of an extended network as a wheel with the extended base station at the hub and each extending base station on a spoke. In your configuration, the base station farthest away will be receiving a very weak signal from the Time Capsule. It can only extend the signal at the bandwidth that it receives it. For best performance, you should consider using a roaming network configuration. Unfortunately, this would require each router to be interconnected by Ethernet.

  • WRT100, poor performance from wireless computers

I updated firmware to version 1.0.02 a few weeks ago and have noticed that wireless clients have had some poor connection problems.
i have 3 laptops connected and one wired computer connected to the router.  the wired computer gets a consistant 55ms ping to a website, yet my wireless computers will sometimes drop packets and get latencies all over the map (from 55ms to as high as 2100ms).
the laptops are in the same room as the desktop computer.
the WRT100 is default settings, except for wireless security is configured for WPA2-personal (TKIP or AES).
sometimes the latencies get so high, i have to reboot the laptops or reset the router (which only works for a few minutes, then it starts acting up again).
is there anyway to downgrade to original factory firmware (i think it was version 1.0.0 )
    thanks

Try to adjust the Wireless Settings on the router rather than downgrading the firmware...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab-
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...
    - And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network.
    Click on Advanced Wireless-

  • Incredibly poor performance from Premiere Pro + Media Encoder

    This is, frankly embarrassing.
I was asked to put a series of still images into a video format to be emailed to a client. The video was to be used by the client for a presentation. I spent half a day trying to get acceptable results, some of which were completely unusable. I experimented with different formats and encoders during this time.
Perhaps it's worth stating, for those of you who might be sceptical, that I've been using Premiere for many years and generally know what I'm doing when it comes to these requests.
After seeing the poor results of my attempts, my colleague decided to try using Microsoft Movie Maker. Not only did he achieve the desired results in under 10 minutes but the filesize was substantially smaller and the quality substantially higher.
It puts the Adobe software to shame, especially considering the results below, from the media encoders log (Note the encoding time!):
    - Preset Used: PAL Source to Download 1024kbps
    - Video: 720x576, 25 [fps]
    - Audio:  96 kbps, 48 kHz, stereo VBR
    - Bitrate: Compressed, VBR, 2 Pass, Audiences:1, Avg 872.00 [kbps]
    - Encoding Time: 00:24:25
    17/03/2010 15:34:20 : File Successfully Encoded
I think you'd agree...this is an appalling situation.

Thanks for your respose - I will look into the links you provide.
I accept of course, that with so little information, you will assume operator error.
Hopefully though, you can also accept that the exercise itself was very simple; the import of a series of still images (all of different dimensions) for export in as high a quality and as small a filesize as possible.
Perhaps Premiere is 'too complex' for such a simple request and this allowed the simplicity of the Microsoft Movie Maker comes into its own. It has an 'import pictures' option in the menu that didn't require any re-sizing or optimisation. All in all, my collegue was able to peform the whole exercise in about the same time it took me to resize all the images to PAL dimensions and import them into Premiere.
Even with this aside, I would have expected far superiour results from the encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder. In fact, MS provided a higher quality file at 4.81Mb in far less time.
I'm certainly no fan of Microsoft, but that just serves to make this situation all the more annoying.

  • Poor performance from N460GTX-M2D1GD5/OC

So i got this card to replace the pair of 9600 gt's i used to have. I run WEI after i installed it, and got a crappy 6.4 for gaming and a worse 4.2 for graphics. down from 6.8 for both on the other cards. So i clean install the newest driver, reseat the card, check the power connections, make sure its running in x16 (verified by cpuz and gpuz), even try to install the drivers that came on the cd (bad idea, they just make seizure graphics on windows. useless drivers). I know my psu can handle this. Seems the card also runs the same in x8 mode as it does in x16 mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also ran kombustor to some pitiful scores. 315 points for dx11. Got another N460GTX-M2D1GD5/OC coming in the mail tomorrow, was going to run this in sli. Maybe i can find out if it's just a bum card. But failing that, this still seems pathetic.
    PC Specs:
    q6600 @ 3.40 ghz
    4 gigs ddr2 corsair memory
    msi-7380 mobo
    tx650w corsair psu

Also the cpu can be holding the two up also, since its an oldie Q6600, even though its oc-ed, Fermi cards are known to need a fast modern cpu.
My GTX470 also is capped by my cpu, it wouldnt do any better in 3DMark06 then my two older GTS250's,  ~14k.
If you can, try those cards in a different system and see if they function there, or do a 3Dmark test with stock clocks on cpu, note score and rerun test with cpu oc-ed and see if points are higher then, if so, your cpu is holding them up.

  • Poor performance from my 600mhz G3 Graphite

I have a graphite G3 iMac, 600mhz with 768mb of memory. I use it mainly for saving photos and going online, nothing special. But I have noticed in the past months that it is unable to load graphic intensive webpages quickly, mainly for example new car sites with lots of Flash I believe. I am also unable to watch iTunes videos smoothly. I hear the audio but the picture will freeze for a few seconds and then come back and then go away etc. If an ipod can play the video, why cant my computer. Is this just a fact that my hardware is not sufficient any longer or does the computer need a cleaning? I dont want to get rid of the computer as I still love the formfactor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

quattro100, the G3 processor is not fast enough to handle the huge amount of data for many of the iTunes videos. If you look at the system requirements for iTunes 6, the additional video requirement is at least a G4 500 MHz or faster.

  • ITunes 5 poor performance in mini player view

When I switch the iTunes 5 interface to the "mini player" view (green plus button), iTunes consumes ~65% CPU time continuously. This isn't the case when iTunes is minimzed, and when the entire interface is visible it only takes ~15% CPU time continuously. This wasn't the case with iTunes 4.x, in which the mini player mode didn't appear to consume any more CPU time than any other view mode. It's terribly annoying since it heats the computer significantly and forces my laptop's fan to spin nonstop.
I can only attribute this behavior to the new "skin," but is anyone else seeing poor performance from iTunes 5 in the mini player view?

No, I just downloaded iTunes 5 a few days ago and I don't have any add-ons. I should clarify that this is on my 867MHz Powerbook G4.
I've been observing the CPU usage some more, and it seems to take a huge hit with songs/labels that are very long; i.e.: ones that scroll sideways across the yellow display on the second line. I've noticed this behavior with Podcasts--the Podcast name will be short and will not scroll, then it's description will roll up and will be long enough to require sideways scrolling. The poor performance comes only whin scrolling titles are being displayed, consuming 45-65% CPU.
Playing music with short artist and album names consumes 10-15% CPU continuously, with spikes to 35% when the artist/album rolls upwards on the yellow display window. If sideways scrolling is displayed, again CPU usage stays high.
If iTunes 5 is in mini player mode and not playing anything (only the Mac logo in the yellow window), then continuous CPU usage is <1%.
It seems to me that text animation in the GUI has taken a huge hit with the upgrade to iTunes 5.

  • URGENT: Migrating from SQL to Oracle results in very poor performance!

*** IMPORTANT, NEED YOUR HELP ***
Dear, I have a banking business solution from Windows/SQL Server 2000 to Sun Solaris/ORACLE 10g migrated. In the test environment everything was working fine. On the production system we have very poor DB performance. About 100 times slower than SQL Server 2000!
    Environment at Customer Server Side:
Hardware: SUN Fire 4 CPU's, OS: Solaris 5.8, DB Oracle 8 and 10
    Data Storage: Em2
DB access thru OCCI [Environment:OBJECT, Connection Pool, Create Connection]
Depending from older applications it's necessary to run ORACLE 8 as well on the same Server. Since we have running the new solution, which is using ORACLE 10, the listener for ORACLE 8 is frequently gone (or by someone killed?). The performance of the whole ORACLE 10 Environment is very poor. As a result of my analyse I figured out that the process to create a connection to the connection pool takes up to 14 seconds. Now I am wondering if it a problem to run different ORACLE versions on the same Server? The Customer has installed/created the new ORACLE 10 DB with the same user account (oracle) as the older version. To run the new solution we have to change the ORACLE environment settings manually. All hints/suggestions to solve this problem are welcome. Thanks in advance.
    Anton

On the production system we have very poor DB performanceHave you identified the cause of the poor performance is not the queries and their plans being generated by the database?
Do you know if some of the queries appear to take more time than what it used to be on old system? Did you analyze such queries to see what might be the problem?
Are you running RBO or CBO?
if stats are generated, how are they generated and how often?
Did you see what autotrace and tkprof has to tell you about problem queries (if in fact such queries have been identified)?

  • Apple maps has received a poor performance rating just after introduction of the iPhone 5. I am running google maps app on the phone. Siri cannot seem to get me to a specific address. Where does the problem lie? Thanks.

Apple maps has received a poor performance rating just after introduction of the iPhone 5. I am running Google Maps app on the phone. SIRI cannot seem to get me to a specific address. Where does the problem lie? Also can anyone tell me the hierarchy of use between the Apple Maps, SIRI, and Google maps when the app is on the phone? How do you choose one over the other as the default map usage? Or better still how do you suppress SIRI from using the Apple maps app when requesting a "go to"?
I have placed an address location into the CONTACTS list and when I ask SIRI to "take me there" it found a TOTALLY different location in the metro area with the same street name. I have included the address, the quadrant, (NE) and the ZIP code into the CONTACTS list. As it turns out, no amount of canceling the trip or relocating the address in the CONTACTS list line would prevent SIRI from taking me to this bogus location. FINALLY I typed in Northeast for NE in the CONTACTS list (NE being the accepted method of defining the USPS location quadrant) , canceled the current map route and it finally found the correct address. This problem would normally not demand such a response from me to have it fixed but the address is one of a hospital in the center of town and this hospital HAS a branch location in a similar part of town (NOT the original address SIRI was trying to take me to). This screw up could be dangerous if not catastrophic to someone who was looking for a hospital location fast and did not know of these two similar locations. After all the whole POINT of directions is not just whimsical pasttime or convenience. In a pinch people need to rely on this function. OR, are my expectations set too high?
How does the iPhone select between one app or the other (Apple Maps or Gppgle Maps) as it relates to SIRI finding and showing a map route?
Why does SIRI return an address that is NOT the correct address nor is the returned location in the requested ZIP code?
Is there a known bug in the CONTACTS list that demands the USPS quadrant ID be spelled out, as opposed to abreviated, to permit SIRI to do its routing?
Thanks for any clarification on these matters.

siri will only use apple maps, this cannot be changed. you could try google voice in the google app.

  • Safari hangs and poor performance in MBPR (Mid 2012)

Safari hangs and poor performance in MBPR (Mid 2012)? OS X 10.10.2 is up to date

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If the Downloads button (with the icon of a downward-pointing arrow) is showing in the toolbar, click it and then click Clear in the box that appears. The download history will be removed. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
              Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Follow the instructions in this support article. Any change?
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Photos, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • New Project settings...possible solution for AVCHD poor performance

I have experience very poor performance when editing AVCHD content from my Canon camera.  I was using the DV widescreen by mistake as the last format I used was a DV camera.
When I switched to AVCHD Full HD 1080i 30 the performance was greatly improved.  But I actualy have my camera set for 1080p 30.  It's a setting on the canon vixia HF S100.  My options are 60i, 30p, or 24p.  I prefer no interlacing so I can avoid de-interlace issues when posting content on computers (plus most TVs are progressive today and it's easier to go from p to i without impacting quality).
But which options is best for me?  should I try and create my own custom setting?  I noticed in the Hard Disk and Flash presets they have two settings (one says 60i but that is anamorphic).  The HD 1080i 30 looks like the same settings Full HD 1080i 30.
    Thanks in advance.

  • EA6500 Poor Performance

    Hello all,
I recently upgraded from a Linksys Wireless-N router that was only a few years old to the EA6500. Since upgraded I have constantly been have performance and range issues with the new router. On many of my devices the WiFi drops constantly and the only way to stop it is to reset the router. With range I am only getting around 20 feet before I start having connection issues. With my old wireless-N router I was receiving around double that. I even have problems with devices such as my Google TV being able to located my PC for streaming content unless I manual connect using the IP address. Wired connections work without any issues.
I have changed the channels and the spectrum so nothing is changing automatically. At this point I am at a loss of what to do. Is it just that this router has poor performance? I would be surprised since this was fairly expensive.
Any help or tips would be appreciated.

I dont know with your old N router, but the EA500 is a dual band. Try changing the wireless name of the 5ghz so that it is different from the 2.4 ghz. This prevents the dual band wireless computers or devices from switching between the 5 and 2.4 ghz causing wifi drops.
Check if your router's firmware is up to date. You can click on connectivity and click on check for updates. If there's a new firmware available, better update it.
Set your wireless security to WPA2 personal, on both the 2.4 and 5 ghz band.
Bring the router as far away as possible from any wireless device that could cause interference, even electronic devices.
Place your router in an open elevated place to eliminate wireless signal obstruction.
If your have access points or extenders in the network, make sure that the devices are in sync with the settings of your new router.
Make sure you are using the recommended power adapter of the new router and not the power adapter of your old N router (this happened to my friend before).
