Poor quality TV programme downloads in  the UK?

Hi,
I purchased a few episodes of spooks from the iTunes UK Store. I have to say it was a massive disappointment, the resolution looks way below normal PAL standards. It is also a disappointment that many of the programmes for sale that are aired on BBC HD are only available in SD and as before, at much lower quality than available watching on air.
Is this others experience too? I Would love to know what the actual resolution and compression is on these downloads.

The quality of encoding of iTunes Store material varies greatly.
The problem I feel is the diversity of the potential target playback device - things need to work on basic video ipods through iPod Touch/iPhone, computer and AppleTV with widely varying playback specs.
Ideally there would be several quality downloads available tailored to the output device of main use, with price inversely prorortional to quality/file size. perhaps there could be a nominal upgrade/downgarde fee for the other resolutions/quality or an option to buy a package.
The rentals are by and large quite good quality, but for purchases, to justify buying into a proprietary DRM video format for things you want to play for years to come, the quality:price ratio has to be good enough to make it a no-brainer to get the download rather than the DVD +/- converting the physical media.
There is also the fact that what we buy a DRM product which may become obsolete in a few years, and would have to buy products all over again. It may not be a problem, but there are no guarantees that these DRM files will be playable in years to come once the hardware it was designed for has been replaced.
Not sure about the US but as more TV Shows etc become available to buy, a large proprotion of comments at the UK store are complaints about pricing - the equivalent DVDs are often much cheaper; how many people are prepared to pay just for convenience especially if the quality might be poor?
Take as an example the first season of Bewitched - I'd love to have this for nostalgia as I quite enjoyed it as a child, but it costs nearly £43 and the equivalent DVD is £12 from Amazon.
I honestly could not imagine paying £43 for a TV Show season unless you were a pretty serious fan of that show, and in that case I bet you'd already have it on DVD.
The UK pricing structure seems to regard each show as though people 'must have' these shows with pricing to match - the main target audience to get decent sales should be broader, i.e. those who'd not be at all bothered if they didn't have the show to watch, but would probably buy three or four of such shows for the equivalent pricing of one currently.
I could buy the Bewitched DVD for £12 from Amazon, but I haven't watched a DVD for many months since having AppleTV. I could not be bothered converting a DVD of something like this to watch on AppleTV, but that will not make me spend silly money for the convenience of the download.
Yet again, pricing makes people who are prepared to pay for legal downloads feel it's not good value. The habitual illegal filesharers won't give a monkey's, nor will they be affected.

  • Poor quality (skips) in download

    Hey All!
I have one particular album that I downloaded several months ago, and every time i play the songs from iTunes or my iPod, they skip in the exact same spot every time. I know Connect Music from Sony lets you re-download purchases (yay! I bought 'em, right?). But can I do the same thing in iTunes? Refunds available if not (just joking, I know better than that)?

Contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the form at the bottom of this web page and explain the problem to them.
Or log into the iTunes Store, go to your Purchase History, find the problem track, click the arrow to the left of the track listing, and use the reporting link there.

  • Poor quality/customer service from Digital Services LLC (Microsoft's provider of Wallet Cards and etc.)

    Hi All,
I recently chatted with MCP support to inform them of poor shoddy service by their provider of Wallet Cards.  Has anyone else had any problems with quality/service with the below provider?  If so who can I contact to report the problems I had with
    them?
Below is a copy of the statement I provided to MCP support:
I ordered a wallet card quite awhile back.  Upon delivery I discovered that it was very poor quality and some of the lettering "Solutions Associate" was very faint.
I contacted arvato digital services LLC to report it.  They requested that I send them a scanned copy of the wallet card.
They then agreed to replace it.  I was told that it would ship 12/17/2013 and after a month or so of not receiving it I contacted them again and Daniel apologized and said it had gotten lost in production.
I was then promised a ship date in January.  I had to contact them again and I finally received it today 2/7/2014.
The papers that came with it said my credit card would be charged.
To summarize:  I was shipped a poor quality card which took them over 2 months to replace,
no improvement on the card still looks like the first one they sent me and finally they said my card would be charged .... AGAIN?
I want Microsoft to know what very poor service arvato digital services LLC is providing to their Members and how I can get a quality card replacement without any additional charge.
I offered to  send the second poor quality card received and also the back and forth emails requesting that they resolve the problem.
By the email time stamps they will see the very long length of time it has taken to resolve this issue and the fact that it is still not resolved.

Same here. I just received them today (21/02/2014). Very very disappointed.
I ordered the Solutions Expert & Specialist Card. Both are terrible beyond all recognition.
Both photos in the cards are blurry, unlike the ones I previewed in the design page. Just like you said, the lettering ('Solutions Expert' & 'Specialist') on BOTH cards are very faint.
I even ordered the 'Specialist' card in German just for curiousity's sake.
On the bottom at the back of the card where you find the "Download the Tag reader app at: http://gettag.mobi" sentence, I found this incomplete (and perhaps just to show their level of incompetence) sentence:
aden Sie die Tag-Leseanwendung hier herunter: htt
Missing the first "L" and the incomplete "http://gettag.mobi"
First, you discontinued the MCM/MCSM program and the whole works last year. I know this is a very different thing and has a very big difference (and revenue). Now you showed the (lack of) care even for the tiniest bit of a Microsoft Wallet Card.
I see no use of contacting Arvato, just another time-wasting effort, third party subcontractor and all that.
    Guys, forewarned is forearmed.

  • Poor quality of motion background menu

    Hello to all.
For the first time I have made a motion menu with Encore CS5.1
The video background of the menu is of poor quality. It seems that the frame rate is lower than normal.
    I have made an experiment:
the menu shows a button which gives access to a video sequence which is the same as the background of the menu. The sources are strictly the same.
The result is that the backgroud menu is of poor quality compared to the content linked by the menu although the assets are the same.
The settings I have used are in the images below.
You will see the video at : http://jp-tech.pagesperso-orange.fr/download/DVD.zip
I have carried out different settings. The results are the same.
    Any help appreciated, thank you.

    Hi Stan Jones,
Thank you so much for the reply.
I am not sure I have well understood your advice. I think you told me that there is not enough bitrate for the audio.
Anyway I have changed the settings as the following and the issue is the same. Best regards. Jean-Paul

  • Fujifilm X100T poor quality RAW conversion?

I've been experiencing what appears to be poor quality RAW image conversion from the new Fujifilm X100T camera that is now supported by Lightroom 5.7.
It appears that Lightroom may be "honoring" the Chromatic Aberration correction that the camera itself writes to the EXIF files. This causes images with high contrast areas to appear very blurry or almost like they've had a filter applied to make them appear hand drawn. It may also be that the camera itself isn't focusing properly, but my tests confirm that the camera can focus just fine.
I've collected a few examples and additional details here:
    http://bigempty.com/projects/2014/fujix100t/
Generally speaking I don't apply any in-camera sharpening, noise reduction, or other corrections as I prefer to work with the RAW file in Lightroom. The examples linked above do not apply any post-capture noise reduction, sharpening, chromatic aberration correction, or any other post-capture edits.
Has anyone else experienced this with the Fuji X100T? Is this typical of the X100 series image quality, or with Lightroom's processing of those RAW images?

Besides white-balance, Adobe software generally ignores what camera settings you use.  The poor quality is just the best Adobe has been able to do with unique XTrans photosite color layout.   Adobe software is apparently optimized to the common RGBG photosite layout.

  • My new 4GS is taking really poor quality photos, how can I improve them?

I'm trying out the camera on my new 4S and am shocked at the poor quality. I've taken the same photo in the same light etc with my 3GS and the image is much better, I can see more detail and the texture is smoother. My 4S images look terrible!
Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a way to alter the settings? Thanks in advance.

Hi there, i am an iphoneographer from OZ, and i am having the same issue, i have switched from iphone 4 which was upgraded to IOS5 to the 4s with the IOS 5. Since owning the 4s i have had nothing but noisey pictures in low lighting conditions, including cloudy days night time occasions indoors ect, even when using flash.
I have used different apps, including the standard apple cam, king camera, Pro cam, Focus Plus, and the quality is all the same with the noise, but yet when i take the same pictures with the iphone 4 (which my other half has now) in the same lighting they are fantastic quality. I'm not clear here what the issue is as being an iphoneographer/Photgrapher i though i knew a fair bit about the iphone but this has really stumped me and left me no choice to send out a call for help and ask if other people out there are in the same boat, and have any advice on what possibilities could help fix this, as i miss the quailty on my iphone and dont want to have to swap back to it. Cheers LJ

  • Headset as headset gives poor quality, as headphones good, who to blame?

I bought a very cheap Bluetooth headset for my MacBook Pro Retina, that got recommended by other buyers, just to find that when using Skype the audio guality is just too bad to be usable. I then decided not to be cheap and bought a Logitech H800 and a Philips SHB7000. The Logitech sounds "ok" but not really acceptable and the Philips almost as bad as the noname.
Now, if I start VLC and watch a movie I found that they sound very good if I pick the "stereo" variants in the device list. Not sure it is OS X 10.8.3 fault, but I had to select, deselect, reselt a couple of times before I could hear anything when switching headset during my test.
So I now have three headsets that all somehow dropped down to bad audio making them useless for me to talk in Skype. To me the audio quality matters a lot when talking to someone over Skype. Partly a bit spoiled by my Sennheiser PC-36 USB headset that sounds excellent.
    Wikipedia writes
There are two types of Bluetooth headset. Headsets using Bluetooth 1.0 or 1.1 often have a single monaural earpiece, which can only access Bluetooth's headset/handsfree profile. Depending on the phone's operating system, this type of headset will either play music at a very low quality (suitable for voice), or will be unable to play music at all. Headsets with the A2DP profile can play stereo music with acceptable quality. Some A2DP-equipped headsets automatically de-activate the microphone function while playing music; if these headsets are paired to a computer via Bluetooth connection, the headset may disable either the stereo or the microphone function.
This is not very comforting, that when using as a headset "some" A2DP headsets might de-activet the microphone and some might drop down to the low quality.
So the bad audio is likely from the poor quality Bluetooth standard is picked, question is who picks it? And does it have to be at the poor quality setting?
Is it the headsets I bought that has this limitation? If so, is there some way to see in the specification before buying that it will drop to low quality if used as a headset?
Or is it my MacBook Pro Retina hardware that is limited so it has to pick the low quality setting? Or is it OS X that does this and an OS update might fix this problem? Or is it Skype that does this, i.e. an application bug?
I would appreciate if someone could clarify where this limitation really is located and possible work-arounds, preferably without buying yet another pair of headsets....

Skype is the problem, nothing you can do.
i posted about it in 2010 and they dont seem in any rush to fix it.
I still use it even with the crappy audio, simply for the convenience. What is really frustrating is randomly i will get a skype call that STAYS in pefect audio quality. It doesnt switch.
So its obviously possible to fix, i just don't thing they have it on their 'to do' list

  • Downloaded Music Sometimes Poor Quality

Once in a while the music I download off of iTunes is really poor quality. The high and low ranges come through fuzzy. Two examples that immediatly come to mind are "50 First Dates" soundtrack, and "Madeleine Peyroux, Careless Love". This is very dissapointing and annoying when I listen to music I've paid for off of iTunes and it sounds really crappy. Makes me want to only buy CDs and burn them into my iTunes. At least then I know I'm going to get quality sound. With iTunes it seems to be hit or miss. VERY ANNOYING! Anyway, I'm not sure where to go on the Apple iTunes web site to complain about this, and what is the likelyhood they they are even going to give a snap anyway? Anyone got any advise?

Many people do not like quality of tracks from iTMS. I buy very little from store prefer to buy CDs an rip myself.

  • Poor quality song downloaded - now what?

    Hi Folks,
I recently purchase the worst digitized song I've heard to date through iTunes. It sounds like it was digitized from a scratched record with a dirty needle in a dusty room! The song is "Still" by Jennifer Lopez from the album "This is Me...Then".
I tried reporting it as a bug, but no response in weeks. Anyone know what I can do about it? If I'd purchased it at a store, I'd take it back...
    Thanks.

It doesn't work. I get an error popup which states "An Error Occurred The iTunes Store could not process your request. Please try again later." Later never works either...
I did manage to e-mail iTunes store customer support about it at the end of February. They replied "Please do not attempt to download this song again within the next two weeks. This will give us time to resolve the issue with the title or remove it if we need to." That was 6 weeks ago but the poor quality preview is still there...

  • What is the best format to save in computer playback to match the quality of my camera ( MP4 1080p) - NTSC provides poor quality, MPEG2 files are too large?

I am editing video and would like to share these at the same quality and size as  the original file - MP4 1080 film clips. I am downloading these files to Google, or to another network. Choices under computer viewing result in the following - NTSC provides poor quality and the MP2 1080 more than doubles the file size. Any better choices?

    andreasa
What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system is it running?
What is your camera? Can we assume your videos from the camera are AVCHD.mp4 (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second?) What is the bitrate and duration of the file?
What is your file size requirement for the export?
H.264.mp4 is a frequently used format used for uploads to various web sites. You can find that format in Premiere Elements in the Share or Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD (most often used) or Share or Publish+Share/Mobile Phones and Players.
Please explain what you mean when you mention NTSC versus MPEG2...I understand MPEG2.mpg or MPEG2.m2t, but what do you mean by NTSC.as an export format.
I will fine tune (customize the reply) with some more details as indicated.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thank you.

  • About the higher quality iTunes store downloads.

    Hi,
I just started purchasing music through the iTunes store 2 days ago. One of my major grievances with the service in the past as a composer/DJ was the poor quality of the encoding (128 kbps). Today, as I purchased 2 additional albums, I noticed a much higher variable encoding rate (generally >220 kbps).
Essentially when an individual pays for music through the iTunes store, that individual is paying for the license to use the song, not so much the song file (media) itself, hence protected media. Is there or will there be any way to re-download the music I already purchased at a higher encoding rate?
Since the iTunes store is offering the same music for the same price, just at a higher quality, I don't see why this wouldn't be an unreasonable request as it is essentially a product exchange. This is obviously an issue that will need to be addressed in the future as average bandwidth among iTunes Store users increases and compression methods increase in quality.
    Thanks,
    DJ McFly
    17" PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

If you managed to download at something other then 128kbps, you have been fortunate as there may have been some type of issue with the file. Unfortunately, I really speculate as to how you got a higher bitrate download as any speculation on Apple products or services is against the "terms of use" of these forums. The store sells downloads in protected AAC format at 128kbps ONLY, that is All they sell. You will not get a higher bitrate download as a request to re-download will get you 128kbps. Consider yourself lucky, it happened to me one time last summer with an album downloaded in what appears to be AAC 260 VBR, It hasn't EVER happened again & I'm talking about hundreds of dollars spent, after this one specific instance, on other downloads.

I'd put them on an external hard drive(s) and burn them to a DVD as well (at least 2 - 3 copies on different drives/media); I prefer having control and a local solution instead of relying on a server and the possibility of someone (who shouldn't be)  downloading my work.

  • Why are burned DVD's poor quality from the IDVD?

I made a slideshow in iphoto and exported to IDVD so I could burn copies.  The show lloked great on screen but the first copies on dvd's were terrible.  The quality of images are very poor and seem to be depixilated?  Why would the copies be so poor?  Does the widescreen or standard have something to do with it??
    Help

    Hi
    There are levels in h*e*l*l*
iDVD - is same as DVD Standard - Interlaced SD-Video
Feeding iDVD progressive or HD material will not improve result but degrade this as from
    - iMovie'08 to 11 - as they can not deliver - but only every second line of the picture
    - iDVD downscaling from HD - is doing a bad job
So by using a program that can deliver - best possibly DVD is the result
    - iMovie HD6
    - FinalCut any version
    - FotoMagico™ - (for SlideShows)
If this is not enough - then DVD is no option as HD-DVD is rare and needs special HD-DVD-players - alt
    • Blu-Ray e.g. from Roxio Toast™ but still needs BD-Player as PlayStation3 etc
    • out in high quality to USB-memory to be played on device that can do this
    • Play via MacBook and out to a HD-projector/TV
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I

    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery
