Poor quality video after rendering

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to make a Blu-ray DVD of a 1920 X 1080 avi clip of a looping logo for a client's show. The clip looks ok in the avi form (compressed with laragith codec) but when I turn it into Mpeg2 HD it looks worst with jagged edges on everything. I have tried both Mpeg2 & H.264. I have done CBR recording at max quality & close to max data rates. The original clip is 1920 X 1080 (1.0) 30fps and I have rendered it in Premiere CS3 with a custom timeline of 1920 X 1080 (1.0) and tried both progressive and interlaced without much difference. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Okay, here goes the entire story. We use a program called Office FX made by a company called Instant Effects to add motion video to our power point presentation. Now the other day a client that we're about to do a show for requested a looping logo for some side screens. We had created this effect in Office FX and now had to find a way to place it on a Blu-ray disc. You can "publish" a file from Office FX, but the only choices are 1)Uncompressed, but with a 2GB limit, 2) DivX, which can't be read by either AE or Premiere, 3) Lagarith, which is a LOSSLESS codec. Since the clip is 30 seconds in length the uncopressed option is out. The Lagarith clip (which is about 200 MB in size) actually looks pretty good, through you can see the start of some the problems I'm having ( I failed to mentioned the banding issues which seems inherent in Mpeg2). So to recap. 1) I can only use Lagarith, 2) It is Lossless and pretty good, 3) The avi is 30 seconds in length and 200 MB in size. The resulting Mpeg2 and H.264 files are 1:30 in length (I tripled them on the timeline) and around 400 MB in size. I have tried 1080i at 29.97, and 1080p at 24. The best result I've had in removing the jagged edges is with H.264 but the downside has been codec artifacts (square boxes showing up in the image). Poor quality video after rendering in CS6

Hi all,
I've recently updated to cs6 and was looking forward to the video editing aspect. Very familiar with iMovie, and don't like the somewhat limited adjustments. Unfortunately, when I rendered my first video in CS6, the quality was horrible. Any suggestions where to turn for advice or tutorials would be greatly appreciated (searching the forum and the web for photoshop video, or movie doens't point me in a helpful direction).

Sorry for the lack of details, I was somewhat looking for a decent online guide but I'd also appreciate any advice as well.
Camera is a Panasonic 3ccd PV-GS500 mini-dv player. I use it primarily for children's theatre performances where the lighting is often suspect. Lots of shadows and poor coloration (blue can lighting on, when multi color should have been used, etc.). With pretty good success, I've been able to fix movies with iMovie, but I think photoshops adjustment layers can really help problem videos where iMovie falls short. I typically export to Media Browser, then use iDVD to create a dvd presentation of the play.
When I tried to do a quick video in photoshop cs6, the export quality was quite poor -- I exported using render video with the default settings that popped up.

Poor quality graphics after rendering

Hi- I'm importing still pics into FCP v5.1.4 at 300 dpi at size exported (took a still frame from captured video and used it as a template in photoshop). The graphic looks great but after rendered, it's of poor quality in canvas.
Sequence settings DV-NTSC 48KHz - Frame size 640 x 480 aspect: NTSC 4:3 > Quicktime Video Settings-Best Quality DV/DVCPRO - NTSC.
I changed the sequence settings to Animation at best quality which rendered better, not great, but took a long time with big files. I'm not sure if this is the way to go.
Should I match FCP video settings > Sequence Presets to Sequence Settings?- as I see no "Animation" in Sequence presets.
I just want to out put sharp good quality graphics and type- is there a recommended set up in FCP for efficient and best quality graphics and type?

I have come up with a pretty good solution using "Animation" setting. The following are my notes:
I changed the sequence settings to Animation at best quality which rendered better, not great, but took a long time with big files. I'm not sure if this is the way to go.
However when exporting using Quick Time Movie output is jagged and files were big: 60 to 117 MB.
Outputting to Quick Time Conversion was better using Animation compression at highest quality but file was too big. Changed that to medium and a reasonable 7.65 MB resulted with a reasonable quality when viewed from Quick Time.
Issues to contend with- will iDVD use this file and display quality? If that .mov file be of quality if put into a FCP timeline?
The DVD came out OK. I will play around with sized 72 dpi's for stills.

Poor quality video after imovie imports it

I have reasonably good quality video (Video DivX 6.0, 640x480, 29.97 fps, Audio: uLaw 2:1, Mono, 8000 Hz) ) which when viewed on my imac in QT looks good. I then import into imovieHD and the quality reduces (lower res and flatter contrast).
The problem seems to be the conversion to DV because if I use toast to do this same conversion I get the same loss in quality (I needed to do this to get movieds into imovie08)
So my question is, given that imovie seems to only use DV (converting all other formats), how to I convert my videos to DV without quality loss (I have all the usual 10.5 software and also TOAST)
Hope somone can help, been banging my head against this for a while now.

At it's heart, iMovie is a DV editing application. When you look at the big picture there are two fundamental video files: those that are meant to be edited and those that are meant to be distributed (youtube, DVD etc). You have a "distributed" file that you wish to edit. This simply means there will always be obstacles and loss of quality. As example, a DV file = 13GB/hour. This is compressed for distribution (commonly using iDVD to create a DVD which only holds 4.3GB). The more compressed the file is, the more quality is going to suffer.
Your file is very compressed and I think you are barking up the wrong tree. What is it you want to do with your file inside of iMovie? I believe there are Divx editing applications out there that will perform simply cuts- but I think they are Windows only. I didn't see anything that would do more than simple cuts, probably because all the individual frame information is gone via compression (which is why iMovie wants an individual frame format).
I may have an MP3 a friend gives me of a orchestra performance. The original recording took place in a studio, mastered via a huge 48-track console. I may want to go back and extract just the trumpet- easy enough with the source material- but not something that can be realistically done with a very compressed MP3.

Poor quality photos after rendering in Premiere Elements 10 timeline

I've imported my photos from Photoshop Elem. 10, at 720x480 res., 72 ppi, jpeg files. and the photo quality is blurred and pixelated and rendering the timeline doesn't seem to help. I checked the flicker removal box...I'm not sure that helped much either. I did a number of these photo videos in an old Premiere application and never ever had this problem, so I'm not sure what's going on. The photo in the preview looks just fine. I'm doing this video for my daughter's wedding, so want it to be of the best quality. Can anyone give me any hints.

This is rather a PS, on display of DVD-Video on HD TV's. Just did a SlideShow of ~ 4000 x 3000 pxls. Still Images, Scaled to 720 x 480 in PS w/ Bicubic Sharper. It was output to a DVD-Video. When I tested it on my laptop with an HD display, the Images looked just OK - DVD resolution w/ no up-rezzing chip involved. However, when I played that same disc on my Panasonic BD player (w/ up-rezzing chip) on a 42" LED TV, things looked great. Only little problem was that in one Image, I got a bit of "glimmer" in some roof tiles - that Image had been slightly over-Sharpened. My bad. As the glimmer was only in one Image, and its Duration was 05 sec., I let it go, as I doubt that anyone else will even see it, when fed to two very large Diamondtron screens in a semi-dark event hall.
The gist of that is that when played on the multi-drive onto my laptop's 17" HD screen, w/ no up-rezzing chip, the Images were just OK - nothing special, and I knew those Images intimately. However, w/ up-rezzing chip in the BD player, and displayed on a much larger screen, the overall quality improved greatly.

DOH! Poor quality output after 4 days trying to perfect the DVD

Hi guys
I have been trying to burn a 1hr 27min .avi file (700MB) for 4 days now. Ive tried a few ways but each time the DVD has poorer quality video than the original file.
I tried:
- opening .avi file in ImovieHD and then sharing it with iDVD (it refused to burn it, after going thru the whole rendering encoding process mind you)
- going straight to iDVD (definitely it would not burn)
- opening in QT Pro and then 'stream as DV'. which i opened in iDVD and saved as disc image with menus etc. burnt using toast titanium - probably the best result so far i think)
however the dv file was worse than an mp4 file i created using iSquint from the .avi.
- have also tried just opening the avi in toast and burning from there. worse product than the previous one.
So, any suggestions? The main problem is things look quite jagged and a bit pixelated if you know what i mean. Where as the mp4 file, which ive played using iTunes and VLC, is quite smooth (but you can see there's still a bit of quality loss when sharp movements are made by the actors.(expected).
So I've lost lots of time on this stupid thing, but I just really want to sort out how to do it well once and for all.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Sounds like a hardware problem. Is your drive under warranty?
For a start, try rendering your iDVD project to a disk image, instead of burning straight to disk.
Then, create a new Burn Folder on your desktop, and drag the VIDEO.TS file from the opened disk image to the burn folder (note that only an alias actually gets put in the folder).
Next, use Control-click on the Burn Folder to get the contextual menu, and select 'Burn Disc'. Follow the prompts, but burn at the minimum speed available.
This way, your apparent hardware problem won't mean re-rendering the iDVD file each time you try and burn a disc.
You can also keep the .img file on your hard drive as a backup of the disc.
You might also be having a problem with quality of the actual discs themselves. What brand are you using?

Low quality video after import from After Effects in FCP 7, but not FCP5

Hi everyone,
I trying to export a video from final cut pro. This video has motion graphics I built in After Effects, as well as footage from my T2i camera. I then took it into FCP to drop in audio and edit all my elements together.
When I exported a 30 second preview a few days ago in FCP5, the .mov file retained the quality of the export from AE and looked great - no quality lost, smooth animations, high quality video.
However, I then upgraded to FCP7, and now the quality is lower and the video components are a bit grainy when I export using the same settings. I've tried tweaking the settings, different ways of compression, but nothing is giving me the same clean export. I've even tried changing the sequence settings and putting my footage back down.
The only other thing that's different is I compressed my T2i footage to ProRes422 before taking it into After Effects, however even the 15 seconds of original footage I didn't compress is grainy now (and so is the original and new graphic work) so I don't think that's it. When I change the timeline sequence settings, I can get it looking good in the preview - but as soon as I render it or send it to compressor it loses quality again.
The ONLY differently between the two exports was upgrade Final Cut, but that doesn't make any sense to me. I've even tried reopening the preview FCP file (which then asks me to update the file to FCP7) and when I do it exports grainy as well - and NOTHING else has changed in that file or the export settings since my initial export of a 30 seconds preview.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what the issue may be? Or, what settings I can use to retain the quality when exporting?

Thank you so much! Although it's not exporting quite as clear as before, it's much, MUCH better now that I've corrected the timeline dominance - I'd say 95% better; and it will be re-compressed by my clients for web streaming so it doesn't need to be perfect - but the initial quality was garbage.
I suspect when I exported my T2i footage as a ProRes file, than imported into After Effects, then back into FCP something happened along the way that messed up the quality slightly. Although the only difference in my method between FCP5 and 7 was converting to ProRes; which I only did for editing purposes as the native T2i footage needs to be rendered... which ended up being redundant as all my After Effects work needed to be rendered anyway. Ho hum.
Do you think the ProRes conversion could account for the quality loss? It wasn't just the footage that was grainy/fuzzy, it was also the After Effects graphic work, which is why I didn't think the converstion could be the culprit. Hm. I'll have to look into this more!

Missing videos after rendering

Hello!
I'm a newbie with After Effects.
I have the following problem: I have a After Effects Project file. In the folder Media Holders there are files with names MEDIA HOLDER 1, MEDIA HOLDER 2, etc. How do I replace them with my files? With right-click option is not available "Replace Footage" option. I use Set Proxy->File and on preview I see my video, but after rendering there is no my video.

Poor quality video and choppy

When I import into imovie with my Sony DCR TRV130 handy cam the quality is poor it is also choppy and speeds up at times. When i connect it directly to the television,it looks fine and the replay speed is fine.

Make sure the QuickTime Player is set to high quality playback.
With the QuickTime Player running, select QuickTime Player>Preferences>General and make sure the 'Use high-quality video setting when available' box is checked.

Poor quality video when viewing on canvas - screens captured by Camtasia

I'm creating avi files of Excel screen shots and activities on a PC with Camtasia, moving them to FCP5, and converting them to QuickTime movies. I've tried lots of settings at both ends of the process. The clips look great if played on QT pl;ayer or other players and not bad when played in the FCP viewer. They lose a lot of resolution when I move them to the timeline, render them, and view on the canvas. Any idea what settings I should use to get these clips looking really good? Thanks very much.

iMovie is for video editing, delivery is in NTSC/PAL, so max. supported res is 720x480...
video means also: iMovie uses internally "dv" as videocodec (as on miniDV tapes...)… what codec is inside the .avi you're producing on your PC? .. as you probably know, avi (in the Apple world: mov) is just a container, some say "wrapper".. can contain many formats&codecs, which look good in playback, but lose quality when processed in iM.. as said: stay with dv...
if camtasia doesn't support dv, try a less compressing codec (mpeg4?)... try to come close to the video specs as possible...
last word about quality:
"video" means also, your Mac can only "emulate" the final pic quality, video has 30fps, is interlaced etc.... playout to tape/create dvd/use iM's live-playout feature to judge delivery quality....

Horizontal red lines across video after rendering

Hi I was color correcting a video in Adobe Premiere Pro Cs5 and had remove some noise with Neat Video. The video looks fine with the small screen, however, I adjusted it to full screen and noticed a lot of red horizontal lines across the whole video. The video was 720x480. I would like to know what am I doing wrong. I'm a beginner in color correction and using Adobe Premiere Pro. Thanks.

i hope the picture helps you. There's not much information to get. It only happens after I finish rendering. I'm using adobe cs4 premiere. There is nothing wrong with the footage.

Poor quality video in interactive pdfs

I'm having problems embedding video content in a pdf whilst retaining its quality. I have a presentation document at A3 size in indesign, on which there is a video on the page at 400x224mm (or 1138x638px if I change the unit of measurement.
We have been getting frustrating results when using a .mov with h264 codec where frames are dropping and the quality is very poor compared to the original. We have tried plenty of iterations, sizing the video to the exact proportions of the box it is placed in, larger HD sizes, using f4v, and altering bit rates, but with similar results.
The odd thing is that when it plays in a floating window, the quality is much improved which suggests it is not the computer struggling, but something to do with acrobat's interpretation of the scaling.
A final complication is that we discovered that using a mpeg4 codec with a .mov seems to be much more successful, but one of our requirements is that it can be embedded both through indesign and directly into a pdf from acrobat, and acrobat tells me it is not a supported format.
It's been a really frustrating process and I'd really appreciate if anyone can suggest a supported file type that will give us the quality required.

We looked into using a floating window, but the documents are for sending out to clients without knowing what size of screen it will be viewed on. This meant that in certain circumstances the poster frame would sit larger on the page than the video itself, creating a bit of an odd composition.
The widget sounds very useful, although I'm hesitant as it would need to be rolled out across a large number of computers in our organisation. So I'm keen to explore any other alternatives (if there are any!) first.
You mentioned:

Since we tried creating the video at the exact dimensions of the media box do you know why it is still rescaling it? I've heard there's a bit of a discrepancy between indesign and acrobat with pixels vs vectors, but have never quite got my head round it.

SX40 poor quality videos

My SX40 has never given very good videos, at any resolution. I figured it was just the nature of the beast, but I have seen some demos recently on YouTube of videos from SX40 that are phenomenal. It is 2 years old and never did work like I expected it to.
Is it possible I am doing something wrong? I tried every possible setting I can think of. Problems:
videos are very grainy
when I move the camera, there is horizontal shimmy or waving in the video when chromcasting, but not on the computer monitor
the camera seems to jitter or rock subtly vertically as if I am shaking it. I tried with and without stabilization
quality is no where near what I have seen on demos on YouTube. Seems like poor refresh rate, but I don't know how to access this parameter.
Hope someone can help. Can Canon fix this? Or should I toss it and try a NIkon?

My experience with video is pretty limited, but I have found that I really need to use a tripod with a very smooth operating head to help eliminate the shimmy/waving effect that you are seeing. Not sure from your description if you are using one or not. As far as the graininess, that sounds like the ISO might be too high or that there isn't enough light available to assist with the camera focusing.
I hope some other members can shed some better insight for you on this.

Poor quality video when burning a DVD

Hi All,
I have recently purchased & installed Premiere Elements 11 on my Windows 7 64bit Dell laptop. I found the tutorials very helpful and was able to successfully create my first project - importing a 46 minute AVCHD file4GB m2.ts shot on my Panasonic HC-V100 in Record Mode HG1920: 1920x1080 25f/s Audio 48kHz. When creating the project I selected: New Project>Change Settings>PAL>AVCHD>Full HD 1080i 25 andTicked ‘Force Selected Project Setting on this Project’ (I'm in the UK hence selecting PAL)
I added titles then created a menu and scenes using a still photo 2mb jpg 3456x2304 300dpi for the menu background. So far so good - really pleased with the results on screen. Next I selected Publish>Disc > selected AVCHD Add Name>Choose 1920x1080i>Burn to Folder. I then burned the BDMV Folder to DVD using the inbuilt DVD burner in my laptop.
This successfully produced a DVD with menus and titles which will play on my Blu-ray player. The quality of the video is excellent and I am delighted with the result however here is the first of the problems I'm hoping someone can help with: The background image on the menu is slightly blurred as are the menu/scene titles.
Next I wanted to produce a DVD for people who don't have a Blu-ray player & therefore need to play it on a normal DVD player. This is the second problem (and one I have seen mentioned elsewhere on the community). I published the project in a similar manner to the one above but with the following differences:
Burn to DVD Folder: Select 4.7>Type name>Browse to location. I now burn the VIDEO_TS folder to DVD, again using the the inbuilt DVD burner in my laptop however this time the result is very poor. The menu doesn't work and the quality of the video is unacceptable. Of course I understand that the result will be considerably lower quality than with the AVCHD version however this is not watchable.
(BTW, prior to purchasing Premiere Elements 11 I had been playing the video from my camera into a Sony RDR-HXD910 hard disc recorder then burning DVDs from that device using SP mode. This produced DVDs with perfectly acceptable quality so I must admit that I was hoping for similar results from Premiere Elements.)
I have read on the community that DVDStyler is a preferred method of burning DVDs however afer downloading it I failed to find a way of using it for simply burning my existing VIDEO_TS folder.
This is as far as I have got and now would really appreciate some help to point me in the right direction to be able to burn my project onto ordinary DVDs. I have tried to put as much information on the post as possible but I am new to video editing so have probably missed or not described something!

--Do you really need NTSC DVD-VIDEO standard 4:3 on DVD disc or is NTSC DVD-VIDEO widescreen 16:9 on DVD acceptable?
I was told that product specs require 4:3 aspect ratio for DVD. (Unfortunately footage was all shot in 16:9 before I found out about the 4:3 finished requirement.) I want to generate the highest IQ possible in this format.
--Is your 1920 x 1080p 30 or 25 or something else?
All video was shot at 1920 x 1080p 60fps. AVCHD.

I didn't make any choices. I didn't use the new project dialog. I imported media and started working. When I saved, I made no choices. Since I'm in the US and bought this from Amazon, I assumed it was NTSC, and that appears to be the case.
--Is your program version 12?
Yes.
Motivated by a different thread regarding titles and 4:3, I did create a test "movie" (not DVD) at 4:3 and all the titles fit within the image area. (I even made a point of inserting a couple of titles that ran outside the "safe" area in the PRE Titler; these also all fit on the image although they came closer to the edge. Not crowded, but perhaps not as aesthetically pleasing as those that were created within the limits.

IDVD. Poor quality video in drop zones

Video's added to drop zones in iDVD menu themes look terrible, before and after burning the iDVD projects to DVD.
Every video looses quality. They "blink/jump". For example the eyebrows or cheeks of people jump up and down and are very noticeable. It's as if the footage has been scaled up from a smaller image.
Does anyone know how to handle this? Is there a workaround?

I'm using iDVD 7.1.2 - and iDVD 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 themes.

Just tested the drop zone in the same theme that you posted with a video created with PhotoPresenter and it was very sharp.
Try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents of IDVD'S cache folder: User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD.
3 - launch IDVD and try again with a new project with the same theme.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
