POP.Protocol Health
Anyone else having POP healthset errors based on the fact that the local Exchange server name is not in the Certificate? When the pop health check runs its connects and tests to its server name. This causes a cert name mismatch because we did
not include the server names in the SAN of the cert as per MS Best Practice. The ease fix would be to have the healthset check on 110 and not 995 but there seems to be no way to configure that port.

Hi Steve,
According to the error message above, I know that you got alert from POP.Protoal Healthset.
I notice that you have got an error message said, local Exchange server name is not in the Certificate, and you didn't put the Exchange server name into SAN certificate.
I think this is the root reason, more detailed error message without sensitive information would be helpful for the further troubleshooting.
Would do you like to tell me why don't put Exchange server name into SAN certificate?
If you have set the Exchange server host name (mail.domain.com) instead of CAS FQDN (cas.domain.com), we must put mail.domain.com into SAN.
Additionally, based on my knowledge, port: 995 is the port which POP with SSL encryption used.
Thanks

Any solution for this alert, how to rectify it, but OWA is running perfect for all users.Hi,
Sorry for the late reply.
Do we have Exchange 2010 coexistence?
If it is the case, I know the following known issue:
Release Notes for Exchange 2013
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj150489%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx
Please note the "Exchange 2010 coexistence" session.
If it is not related to our problem, please check the IIS log.
If there is any detailed error code, like 401.1, 401.2, please let me know.
Hope it is helpful
Thanks

Delete emails from server after retrieving with IMAP protocol?
Hi,
I am using Mail as my email program and have set up my account with IMAP.
When I use the POP protocol, I get the option to 'Remove copy from server after retrieving message'. When I set up Mail with the IMAP protocol, there is no such an option. The result is that my server inbox is slowly filling up and I manually have to login on my server to delete older messages.
Is there a setting to automatically remove retrieved messages from my email server using IMAP?
Thanks for your help.
ErikDear Thomas,
Thanks for the clarification! Now I understand the mechanism.
Still I would like to know if there is a way to automatically remove retrieved messages from the e-mail server. Would it help to automatically move my incoming messages in INBOX to a different mailbox in Mail.app? How would I set this up?
Thanks for the response!

How do I set up a POP email account (not an LDAP account)
When I try to establish a new email account with my COX provider, the mail program defaults to an LDAP account. LDAP doesn't seem to allow me to leave my messages on the COX server after I have read and deleted them on my MACBook. The POP protocol allows messages to be left on the server for a specific number of days
How do I force the account to be set up as a POP account?.Howdy Jerry,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to setup your COX email account as a POP account in Mail on your MacBook Pro, which is running OS X Mountain Lion. The first article will guide you to the Mail account configuration panes where you can make the change, but I recommend reading the other two articles linked below also because they will tell you more about the types of email accounts that Mail supports and ensure the accounts are setup in a way that won’t cause more issues in the future.
Mail (Mountain Lion): Send and receive mail for all your accounts
Set up your accounts
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Mail, Contacts & Calendars.
Click an account type, enter your account information, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
Make sure the apps you want to use with the account are selected.
Mail (Mountain Lion): About account types
Mail settings you might need from your email provider
I hope this helps.

How do I convert yahoo email on iPhone FROM IMAP TO POP?
I have Yahoo Mail Plus. When I first got my iPhone 4, I set it up so my yahoo email was accessible on my phone without my doing anything. I only check the email from two devices: my desktop via the internet, and my iPhone. I'm pretty sure the email set up on my phone is an IMAP protocol, because when I delete an email from one device, it deletes it on the other device.
I actually want to change it so that when I delete an email on my phone, it DOESN'T delete it from the Yahoo server. I think that's the POP protocol. I realize setting it up as POP will require that I delete the emails multiple places. I can live with that. What I don't currently like is that all of the emails I've saved in my Yahoo account, in multiple folders, are now also sitting on my iPhone. It's a risk exposure I'd like to eliminate. My iPhone password is a start, but I'd feel better if I could purge old emails off my iPhone. Right now, if I delete the various emails and folders from my phone, it's my understanding they'll also be gone from my Yahoo internet account. I don't want that.
I've read various posts saying I should delete my Yahoo email account on my iPhone and then set it up as a new account and select POP.
1. Is that the only way to change from IMAP to POP?
2. If I delete Yahoo mail on my iPhone, what will happen to my stored emails on Yahoo? Will they be saved or deleted?
3. Is there another solution?
4. Any other advice?
Thanks for any help. And if I've skewered any terms here, forgive me. Sometimes dealing with this stuff is like learning another language. CindyFirst off, you are correct in the assumption that emails are sitting on your iPhone. You should, however have the option to set how much to sync, as well as what folders to sync to determine what is visible. The only setting to change that is to set a passcode on the phone.
Also, deleting the emails and folders from the phone will result in them being deleted from the server, this is how IMAP works.
To answer your other quesetions:
1. That would have to be answered by Yahoo, since the server would have to be different. An IMAP server acts differently than POP.
2. Deleting will delete everything everywhere.
3. The only other solution I can think of is as I stated earlier is if there is a setting for days to sync in IMAP. I'm not sure of this since I do not use an IMAP account. I know that Exchange behaves in this way.
4. If this does not work as you want after talking ot Yahoo, then maybe selecting a POP email provider and forwarding the Yahoo mail to that and picking up the POP mail on the iPhone.
I think that Yahoo will give you information that you will need to start your search for answers. -
Tried to open new POP account - disaster
Hi there,
I wanted to change over my mail address from one yahoo account to another. When I tried to do this ie: added another account, I typed in exactly the same incoming mail server as the original yahoo address. It tried to check connection to POP server, it connected then tried to log on and came back with this message
'Trying to log into the POP server 'pop.mail.yahoo.com.au' has failed. Please make sure the username and password are correct. If you continue, you may not be able to receive any mail.'
So I deleted the old yahoo account I had going in mail and just entered the new one again. It came back with the same response (the user name and password for new account are DEFINITELY correct, this is not the problem.)
So I thought I'd add the original yahoo account again just so I have a POP account in the Mail program. Well that no longer works! When I tried to log in to POP server, the message appeared to go through, but when I checked my details it says the SSL is off.
Then when I enable the SSL (in the advanced settings of Mail preferences) it imports ALL my emails again since I started using this computer (thousands!!!!!!) But then by the end of that rigmarole, I STILL can use the 'get mail' function to retrieve new mail.
I tried to change my mail setting once before and a similar thing happened. I got some help changing it by logging to my computer as a different user, then.....? I honestly can't remember, it was very complicated. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
Why, oh why can't it be simple to change from one Yahoo address to another on the Mail program? (sigh....)Did you access to your account with a browser like Safari ? Then you have to quit this account by using "logout". If you don't do this, you can't connect to this account by a pop protocol with a mail software like mail or entourage which manage these mail accounts. I ancountered this problem several times, because I forgot that this makes creating new accounts impossible and connecting to them difficult.

I cannot set ip a POP email account (not POP3)
I have one e-mail account that still seems to be based on the POP protocol rather than POP3. I cannot get Thunderbird to accept a POP account, it only offers POP3 or IMAP, there is no other option, as a result I cannot access the account through Thunderbird, Outlook on the other hand has no problem. How do I resolve this issue?
re: I have one e-mail account that still seems to be based on the POP protocol rather than POP3.
Are you sure? POP3 is the current standard compliant and has been so for ages / years.
What settings are you using in Outlook:
Incoming Server name : ?
Port: ?
Connections Security : ?
Authentication Method: ?
What comes after the @ in your email address? -
Tried to open new POP account - disaster (2)
NB. the port is 110 and the 'use SSL' box is NOT ticked (in advanced settings) when old emails coming flooding through into my mail program.
If I tick the box 'use SSL' the port changes, but it doesn't make the Mail program work.
Please see my previous post of a few minutes ago for this to make sense!
All the best.Did you access to your account with a browser like Safari ? Then you have to quit this account by using "logout". Pull POP client web to Exchange Server 2013
Hi, i am new in Microsoft Exchange Server and Email Server Administrator. At present, my company planed to have a Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 and my scope will pull data from the web-client using POP3 to the Exchange. Would you guys give me any solution
and advice for this? Thanks a ton
Sorry for my bad English.Hi,
What’s the exact mean of “pull data from the web-client using POP3 to the Exchange”? Do you mean the Outlook client connects to Exchange 2013 with POP protocol?
If that is the case, please enable and configure the POP in your Exchange server by the following article:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124934(v=exchg.150).aspx
Generally, POP3 was designed to support offline mail processing. With POP3, email messages are removed from the server and stored on the local POP3 client unless the client has been set to leave mail on the server. For more information
about POP3 in Exchange 2013, please refer to:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj657728(v=exchg.150).aspx

Gmail POP worked fine until 2 or 3 weeks ago.
Then it simply stopped fetching new mails, which are otherwise normal in web Gmail of course.
I used this to turn on logging: "~/Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts/Turn on Logging.scpt". Here's what I see in the log of the POP interaction:
After receiving UIDL and LIST of new emails, Mail.app tells me about the ones too large (over 1MB... since I'm on cell phone modem!)and then simply QUITs after receiving the LIST of new emails!?!?
Sending is fine.
On fetch attempts after the first download where I skipped the large emails, it simply QUITs immediately after receiving the LIST.
It seems non-Gmail users have similar issues.
I also get sometimes a NSError "The connection to the server pop.gmail.com on port 0 timed out."
Some people had success by deleting Mail account and recreating. I tried and it downloaded most of the already downloaded messages, then stopped at an earlier email than with the previous account.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting are very welcome, and solutions too
Thank you,
cathi, thks for answering.
Re: NSError - the script "~/Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts/Turn on logging.scpt" logs to "console.log" essentially the POP protocol's session, but also the overall socket activity, so socket errors come up in there as well.
My cell phone modem connection has reasonable throughput but terrible latency so timeouts occur frequently.
I'd love to be able to set a longer timeout, maybe up to 60 seconds, for mail related activity. Is there a way?
Re: Network Port Configuration: I only have one active, the "Bluetooth" to my cell modem.
Re: Gmail POP settings: they have always been on "Get from now on", and never changed since I started using Gmail POP last March or so.
Re: Mail choking on some messages. My impression is that after having several messages to skip, after 5 messages to skip say, Mail stopped altogether to consider new messages to download!! I can't really erase them since I expect to download all my messages when my bandwidth will be adequate (f.ex. when I get to an urban area).
This maybe related to another odd and peeving behaviour: the POP download fetches a decreasing number of messages in a session. So, whereas initially I would get all messages, i.e. two dozen or more, in a fetching session, this number diminished right until it got to 1 per session, then it stopped. So Mail/Gmail would get/send only one message each time I press "Get Mail". Then, after several days, no message at all!
It feels like Gmail or Mail has some algorithm for deciding how many messages out of all the ones waiting to be downloaded to fetch in each session; and this algorithms gets confused with time.
Of course I can't decide who's the culprit between Mail.app or Gmail, perhaps they both have some logic about how many messages to transfer via POP.
NEWS: today, since Sept 19, the POP connection transfers again, but only 1 message at a time (there are over 350 waiting)!!! Why only 1? Do I have any control over the POP session?
I thought of using another client to get email and then transfer it; the problem is 1) little time for this and 2) low/unreliable bandwidth for downloading Thunderbird. And 3) I want my mac apps to support my pride in apple products -
Adding IMAP account, then deleting POP account
I am not a MAC user, I am helping my mother in law clean up her MAC messes and need some expert advice.
Her mail was set to a very old POP protocol and I created a new IMAP account. In the MAC mail app, there is a group of folders called "on my mac". If I delete the POP account, will these folders get deleted too? The deletion dialog warns all folder associated with the POP account will be deleted, but I don't understand which folders are connected to the POP account. I do not need to preserve the POP inbox or trash as the transition from POP to IMAP is the same ISP account and the new IMAP inbox has all the unread new mail. Thanks. My nervousness comes from here:
"Apple Mail With the Apple Mail program, if a mailbox (an “account”) is deleted, it removes all messages associated with that mailbox. It will also delete all local mail folders (those which normally show up under “On My Mac”). "

How do I access GMail via POP?
Before upgrading to Mountain Lion I had Mail configured to access my GMail account via POP rather then IMAP. I mistakely deleted the GMail POP account configuration. Now, Mail 6 won't allow me to chose how to access GMail - POP or IMAP. Apple removed the Account Type option that was present during account set-up. Is there any way I can create a mail account configuration that uses the POP protocol?
Thanks,
JohnIMAP is inferior to POP for a lot of business applications. It's not really correct to say IMAP is better than POP, they are different methods with different feature sets. With IMAP there's no ability to store a message on the server if you download, then it is deleted on a client. This can be a disaster when you have multiple people monitoring the same email, or you are using multiple devices. Once accidental misclick archive filing for example while on your iPhone can cause your desktop not to receive the mail, or not be filtered properly. Many business depend on this for orders, customer service, and general communication. IMAP cannot be trusted, even with myself as a developer. Using IMAP is like relying on interns at Pixar to use Unix commands perfectly and not delete the feature film with a late night brainfart.
When you receive a lot of email, things get overlooked, and IMAP has been the root of more than one catastrophe in my life. The main upside to IMAP is that you can manage the space of email, but this is 2013, and my entire mail archive since 1994 is less than 50gb. I think space doesn't matter much anymore, better to be safe with pop, than sorry. I might get my email 1-5 minutes later having to fetch it instead of being pushed, but that's ok considering the consequences of the alternative. Email is not designed to be an instant thing anyway.
It's annoying gmail defaults to IMAP in Apple mail now, but not in IOS. Makes no sense. -
Mark POP e-mail as read when read on the server
So, when an e-mail gets marked as read on the Yahoo server, it automatically gets marked as read on my Palm Pre. (And, of course, the same is true for e-mails on the Exchange Server, but I recognize that that is a plainly different situation.) So, if that is possible with Yahoo e-mail, why doesn't that same thing happen with POP mail from other sources? The account settings for the POP account allow me to set it to delete messages off of the phone when they are deleted from the server, so clearly the device is capable of monitoring the status of e-mails that have already been downloaded. As such, why can't it also monitor the read/unread status, and update that when it changes on the server? This is very frustrating to me, and it is made all that much worse because there is no way to deal with (delete, mark as read) multiple e-mails at once.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)Yeah, I can appreciate the format differences, but that explanation seems to be a bit problematic in light of one of the settings I am able to select on POP accounts. The account settings for any POP account allow me to set it to delete messages off of the phone when they are deleted from the server. So, obviously the Pre is able to monitor e-mails that have already been downloaded to see what has happened to them on the server end. Of course, the Pre also knows not to download messages that it has already downloaded once before. I may be wrong, but it sure seems to me that if a mail client can figure out if a message has already been downloaded or not, and can further monitor if it has been deleted from the server, then it should be able to monitor the read/unread status as well. If not, then whoever designed the POP protocol seems to have left out an obvious feature while allowing others that were very similar.
In any event, this whole thing wouldn't really be much of a problem if I could simply select multiple e-mails at once on the Pre and mark them all as read or delete them all as a group, instead of having to deal with e-mails in an agonizing one at a time fashion. Palm? You out there? Users could do this on your older products, and I see a lot of users complaining about it with the WebOS, so where's this fix? -
Gmail - IMPA v. POP help me decide?
gmail account is my only account, personal account,
macbook pro only computer, no office requirements
iphone used for email.
currently configured for POP on macbook & iphone
what would be the reasons for switching to IMAP as recommended by gmail and others?
I do respond to emails while not connected to the net, on airplane etc.
I am interested in getting mail on both the macbook & iphone.
any insight beyond IMPA is recommended?I think you meant IMAP, not IMPA
Here is a brief comparison of POP and IMAP technologies:
POP protocol advantages:
-Simpler protocol; easier to implement.
-More client software currently available.
IMAP protocol advantages:
-Can store messages as well as fetch them.
-Can access and manage multiple mailboxes.
-Can manipulate persistent message status flags.
-Suitable for accessing non e-mail data like NetNews, documents.
-Can support concurrent updates and access to shared mailboxes.
-Can also use offline paradigm, for minimum connect time and disk use.
-Companion protocol defined for user configuration management (IMSP).
-Constructs to permit online performance optimization, especially over low-speed links.
