Possible Damage to Display/Screen following a dropped Macbook - Help!

We have a 13-inch, 1st generation MacBook (purchased around May '06) which has survived a few minor drops relatively unscathed. This evening, our one-year old pushed the Macbook off of our bed (about a 2 1/2 - 3 foot drop) onto the stained concrete floor. Houston, we have a problem.
The computer itself seems to be behaving normally, except the display/screen will not remain on for more than approximately 2 seconds after it is restarted or comes out of sleep mode.
From what I can tell from looking at the screen in that 2 seconds, the actual display does not seem to be damaged (no lines, cracks, etc.); it looks fine...for two seconds. Then, fade to black. The only issue seems to be the display turns itself off when the Macbook wakes up or is powered on. Which would lead me to believe the problem is not that the display is damaged, but whatever controls when the screen is turned on/off was messed up by the fall. (Just an uneducated guess.)
Can anyone offer some advice/information/opinion as to what we may be looking at in the way of repairs ($$$), or if this is something someone else has experienced and may know of a quick fix?
Any and all information is appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Candace,
Thank you very much for the suggestion. I tried it out and it
worked. Now I want to retieve that image stored in the database
using the same form by executing a query. What would be the code
for the when-button-pressed trigger. When I give a select
statement, it gives an error.
I would appreciate if u cud help me out witrh this.
Thanks again....Viji.

  • EOS 70D display screen not working because of humidity - Canon cutomer service totally unhelpful

    Hi!
I have purchased an EOS 70D last October. Everything was working perfectly until I took it to the Caribbean, where on the second day the display screen stopped working. I could still take photos, but nothing was shown on the screen. I currently live in Canada. I took the camera to the store, where they told me that I have to send the camera (that still has warranty on it) at my own cost to the official repair centre. After a week, i got a letter from them, saying the following:
"We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. Upon further examination it was determined that we are unable to repair your equipment therefore
Canon has suggested a replacement product to you in exchange for your original unit at the cost detailed below. Please respond to this estimate promptly to
    avoid having your equipment returned.
We will replace your equipment with a EOS 70D. The new serial number is not yet available.
Upon inspection, technician found unit is beyond repair due to moisture damage. Estimate has been adjusted to reflect replacement suggestion."
I am furious. They are offering me to buy a new camera for the same price. I called customer service and asked them to explain the letter. They said they will send me photos of the inside of the camera, where they have found mositure. I asked them to re-check it, as I didn't misuse it, I didn't drop it in the water, or anything of that kind. They said the camera must have been used in a very humid/or very cold place. Can they be serious? Is that really my fault? I mean, I bought the camera to be able to take pictures anywhere I go. I didn't do anything extra to it or with it. I will take this as far as I can, I just don't find this a normal response. Any suggestions??? Anyone had the same problem before?

Every post ought to have a learning opportunity so I am attaching a list compiled by a Canon technical advisor addressing the problem of handling photographic equipment in hot weather.
Hot Weather Photo Equipment Handling Tips
Compiled by Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor/Canon U.S.A., Inc.
    1.) Avoid Condensation:
This is a biggie. If temperature and humidity differentials are high enough, condensation may occur when moving photo equipment from a relatively cool environment such as an air-conditioned vehicle, to a warmer one. When condensation forms inside a lens, for instance, internal elements can fog up, preventing clear images. When condensation gets bad enough inside a camera body, it can cause short circuits resulting in unexpected shutdowns. Worse yet, when equipment temperatures finally equalize to the warmer environment, water droplets on glass surfaces inside a lens may dry out and leave spots, mildew or fungus that can’t be cleaned by the photographer.
Similarly, when condensation dries up inside a camera, fungus, mildew, rust or corrosion may be left behind on printed circuit boards, viewfinder eyepieces, shutter curtains, or other internal components. If any of this happens, the equipment may be permanently damaged.
Incidentally, no matter how good it is, ‘weather sealing’ cannot prevent condensation, nor was it ever intended to do so. Damage caused by condensation is considered a user error, and it will void warranty coverage. One of the best methods to avoid condensation is to allow photo equipment to warm up gradually before exposing it to a hot environment. If this is not practical, consider placing the equipment in an airtight, resealable plastic bag with silica gel packets inside before exposing it to heat. (Don’t forget to squeeze as much air as possible out of the bag before you seal it, otherwise this technique may not work.) Using this method, the condensation will form on the bag instead of the equipment. Once the condensation on the bag has dried out, it should be safe to remove the equipment and start using it.
On a related matter, in hot and humid conditions, perspiration may cause condensation to form on your camera’s viewfinder eyepiece. Some camera manufacturers including Canon offer anti-fog eyepieces to prevent condensation from forming.
2.)  What To Do When Condensation Has Occurred:
Use a soft, dry clean cloth to remove moisture from exterior surfaces. If possible, place the equipment in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent further condensation from occurring.
3.)  Cover Equipment When Not In Use:
If you must leave your camera equipment exposed to high heat and/or humidity conditions for long periods of time, consider covering it with a dry white towel when it’s not in use. Even when condensation is not an issue, heat absorption is another big concern for professional cameras and lenses, and especially digital SLRs. Cameras are designed to operate within a specific range of temperature and humidity conditions. For instance, the EOS-1D Mark IV professional camera has a high-end temperature rating of 45C/113F and a humidity rating of 85% or less. Since most camera bodies are black, internal temperatures can exceed this limit even when the ambient temperature is below it.
4.)  Avoid or Limit the Use of Camera Settings that Generate Heat:
Heat build-up caused by ambient temperatures is one problem, but the other side of the coin is heat build-up caused by the camera itself. This has become more of an issue recently with professional digital SLRs due to the incorporation of new features such as Live View and HD video recording. These features generate heat from several camera components including battery packs, image sensors and LCD screens. If you plan on using Live View or recording video outdoors in high-temperature environments with your digital SLR, there are a couple of things you can do to minimize heat build-up inside the camera:
Limit the use of Live View for still shots. This will minimize heat build-up from the image sensor and LCD screen.
Use an external monitor when recording video. This will shut off the camera’s LCD screen.
Use an AC Adapter Kit. This will reduce heat build-up by eliminating battery packs.
Set the camera’s Auto Power Off setting to a reasonably short interval. Let the camera help to minimize heat build-up by allowing it to shut down automatically after a minute or two of inactivity. This will also conserve battery power.
5.)  Storing Equipment in Hot Weather:
In high temperature environments with ambient humidity over 80%, use silica gel packets in your gadget bag or equipment case to absorb excessive moisture and protect your camera gear. Silica gel packets can be purchased in quantity from professional camera dealers and chemical supply houses, and are available in clear or moisture-indicating varieties. For long-term storage, consider storing camera equipment in Tupperware or similar sealable plastic containers with silica gel packets to absorb moisture and prevent fungus and mildew. In severely humid environments, even silica gel packets may be insufficient; so-called “camera dry cabinets” from manufacturers such as Toyo Living are available for such conditions.  No matter what kind of storage container you use, ideally the humidity level should be less than 60% for maximum protection. Relatively inexpensive hygrometers of the type used for cigar thermidors are available to monitor humidity levels inside the containers.  Remember to test hygrometers at least once a year, and recalibrate them if necessary.
6.)  Store Battery Packs Separately and Keep Equipment Clean:
To prevent corrosion of your camera’s electrical contacts, remove battery packs prior to long-term storage. Also, as a matter of good housekeeping, clean cameras and lenses regularly and thoroughly. This is especially important in hot and humid weather, or after your camera equipment has been exposed to rain or condensation, to prevent mildew and fungus from forming.

  • Stuck on grey screen following updates

I am trying to fix my wife's mac book that is stuck on the gray screen following numerous updates. I am not exactly sure which OS she has but it is at least 10.4.1. I cannot boot in safe mode. I used the disk utility from the install disk and repaired the disk (it didn't find any problems) and repaired permissions which it seemed to do a bunch of things, then tried rebooting in safe mode and am back to the gray screen.
I have read on the forums about possible solutions using archives(?) but we were in the middle of backing up the computer when my wife accidentally restarted and so her files are not backed up. She only has about 7 GB of the 60 GB hard drive free (although she does have an external hard drive with plenty of free space available). We don't have another mac to try some of the other solutions suggested. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sam

Hi lizzip, and a warm welcome to the forums!
On the 10.4.6 on the DVD & 10.4.11 on the Mac, it is normal, and if you do end up Archive & Installing, you can o directly to 10.4.11 with this...
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Of course 7GB is getting dangerously low to attempt that.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

  • Lumia 800 Display/screen REVISION

    Hy there
So i broke my lcd display on my Nokia Lumia 800. I replaced once with the same REV 8.6, the problem is the store no loger has REV 8.6, they told me that they got REV 9 and REV 8.7 screen firmware and it works on my phone. But the thing is i dont trust them... because its an side service and they want to sell their stuff.. So everywhere i look on eBay on diverse sites for my display/screen its says "Check your screen revision first, then buy"
So im asking you guys if you can help me, i should buy a screen with revision 8.7 ? It will work ? or i will be stolen 70Euros ?

    Hi chrisbt,
Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions!
The best course of action is to take the phone to the nearest Nokia Care Point for assessment and repair. Since you've dropped the phone, it is tagged as physical damage and will void the warranty. Hence, charges will apply. The repair cost will depend on the assessment, repair, labor cost and replacement of parts.
If you are in the UK, check the link below for the addresses of Nokia Care Points:

  • Is it possible to scratch the screen iPad2 fingernail?

Good day to all! Is it possible to scratch the screen iPad2 fingernail?
While not pressing, etc. And by chance. Scratch a little (0.5 - 1 cm) - is visible especially in white. Divorce is such a viewing angle especially.
While straight on the screen.  It seems everywhere they write about the strength of Gorilla Glass. And then ...
And in addition: whether it is somehow "fix"?
Or store where I bought - replaced the glass on the other and not reported it?

paulfromathensDo you mean that I "strongly pressed with a fingernail on the screen?"
This is how hard it would be necessary to reap? I took his fingers in the Solar Walk. All.
Is it possible that this is a faulty display?

    Hi
According to your description, since this is SQL Server forum, as Olaf Helper’s post, could you get the correct result if you execute the following query in SQL Server Manager Studio (SSMS)?
select UserName from aspnet_Users where UserId in(select FreindId from myFreinds where UserId in(select UserId from aspnet_Users where UserName = '<your typed name>'))
If you cannot get the correct result in SSMS, I recommend to check the Transact-SQL statement. Apart from the error message, we also need to know the table structure, data, join relationships between tables for further analysis.
However if there is no problem in SQL Server query, it will be an issue that regards ASP.NET and website deployment. I suggest you to post the question in the ASP.NET forums at
http://forums.asp.net/ . It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.
In addition, there is detail about listbox control in asp.net. You can review the following links:

  • Is it possible to show first item in a Drop down list

Is it possible to automatically display the first item in a drop down list ?
The reason I ask is  ... I am generating pre-filled PDF forms using XML data files.
Whenever there is a certain type of data I am populating a drop down list for the user to review.
Currently, the user must click on the drop down to see if data is there regardless of whether there is no data at all or many data lines of data..
I would like to make it clear to the user whether or not there is any data - right awa.y
I have considered creating a display item next (like a check box or a text field ) next to the drop down and setting it to cindicate if there is data, etc -
but i thougth that I would ask if the drop down could simply be set to automatically display the first item in the list (this is the preferred functionality)
If this is not possible I can always create a check box and set it if there is any data as an  indicator for the user ..
    Thanks

    You can do this way..
Place the code in Inititalize event with Java Script
    if(DropDownList1.rawValue == null)
        DropDownList1.selectedIndex = 0;
You need to check if the Dropdown has a value selected from the previous save.. If not then set the selected item to 0th index. (which is 1st one in the dropdown values)..
    Thanks

Anywhere you can find it via the obvious Google search. It won't be from Apple, but will be a generic replacement.
Why are you throwing away any future chances of out of warranty replacements when you drop or drown it?  Apple will give you a warranteed replacement phone for $199 (in the US, roughly the same in your country)

  • Selecting display screen and resolution for L540 and other thinkpads ?

What is the difference between different types of displays : 15.6 " TFT HD (1366 X 768), 15.6 " FHD (1920 X 1080), 15.6 " HDD (1366 X 768) ? I am planning to purchase a 15.6 " Thinkpad but I am not able to decide which type of display to get. FHD display costs $170 extra, and how much the pixel density will affect the screen resolution in 15.6" ? I know in 15.6" screen, 1366X768 will have a PPI of around 101, around how much PPI we need generally ? I am going to use laptop for work purpose, coding, deveopment etc. I am not a gamer and will play and watch movie ocassionaly. So, what type of display will suit me ? Any help will be deeply appreciated.
    Thanks

If you are doing desktop publishing, and use a clear plastic ruler to take measurements off the screen, a 19" (18" viewable) ideal resolution at 72 dots/inch and 4:3 aspect ratio yields 1036 by 784 pixels, which is never supported. The closest one down from that is 1024 by 768, adjusted to a picture width of 14.2 inches by height of 10.6 inches. this will give you a really good "what you see is what you get" display, and can save you time and trouble.
That said, it seems nowadays that folks Not doing desktop publishing set them to the highest resolution possible, and then increase the default browser text size until they can read it. If you choose not to maintain a 4:3 aspect ratio (4x number of pixels horizontal to 3x number of pixels vertical) you will have to live with whatever distortion is introduced into your work, including movies and pictures of real-world objects from the Web.
Tests show that refresh rates above 75 Hz reduce flickering for almost everyone, but that there is wide person-to-person variability below that rate. So set it to 75 Hz or higher, if your display supports it.
In any case, the highest refresh rate that works with your display without making high-pitched whining noises or getting really hot will reduce eyestrain. The reduction in system performance from higher refresh rates is truly negligible, as long as your display hardware has VRAM (and the Blue & White has 16 MB on the default display card).
