Possible kernel issue?
Reposted from: Using Mac OS X Leopard forum (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1225&start=0)
I am running an Xserve cluster with 10.5.4 server on the head node (the node users log into via SSH) and 10.5.4 client on all the others. This issue affects all nodes, client and server (hence posting here), PowerPC (dual G5) and Intel (quad Xeon) architectures, and is new to OS 10.5.
The problem is that very often when users are running processes, particularly those heavy on disk access (and typically while writing), the system will stop responding to anything but pings. SSH goes down, and I can't even log in at the console (pinwheeled at the login screen). The CPU usage LEDs on the front of the Xserve show one CPU pegged out at 100%, and the other idle. I am forced to hard-reset.
This happens on the head node, to which the disk (an Xserve RAID) is actually attached via a fibre link, but also happens if the user ssh'es into the head node, then ssh'es into another node (nodeN). This seems to rule out both a faulty disk I/O driver (a crash on nodeN does not also take down the head node) as well as a fault in the network layer (since the head node also crashes with the disk local).
At any rate, there is no excuse for OS X to be letting a user, especially a non-privileged user, take down a system like this. Since this would seem to be an infinite loop or a memory leak that is left unchecked by the task scheduler, I'm tempted to conclude that the problem resides in the kernel.
Has anyone else dealt with or heard of this issue? Any ideas, tips, etc., are welcome; I'm out of ideas (short of reverting to 10.4.11... or installing Linux)...
I suggest you post this in the [Xserve forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=854].

I have had this for at time, but it did not causing any problems. But here after the new kernel, I can't use the 'quickcam' module for my Quickcam Communicate. You should be seeing these messages any time iptables is running. They are reporting blocked inbound connection attempts, which is a good thing. You need to look elsewhere for a quickcam fix, however.
Incidentally, those messages include your public IP address - if this concerns you, you might want to edit/remove them. -
Anyone having kernel issues at boot up with mountain lion?
Having kernel issues at boot up after upgrading from lion to mountain lion. Anyone else having same issue?
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports. -
ipod doesn't work on speakers but headphones are fine and speaker works with iPhone. Possible connector issue? Any thoughts on how I can get the fixed?
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device. -
Kernel Issue while USB tethering iPhone 4 to Macbook pro
My 2011 macbook pro has been having the kernel issue with the iPhone 4 but thats not all. I got it exchanged for a new one today and noticing the hard drive is still running a little loud. Its not too loud, but loud enough that if the room is silent, you can hear it and it gets slightly annoying. I dont know if this is normal or not? They definitely need to fix the tethering issue. other than that. I love it and am super happy with it. I also have a MacBook 13" 2010 model. But this hard drive is not as loud. Maybe its normal...I dont know.
Ok I can try that for next time...but is there any way I can get my other files to work properly? They play fine in iPhoto but I'd like to be able to save them to a USB drive.

V3.6.3 Crash Today - Possible Plugin Issue?
Re: v3.6.3 Crash Today - Possible Plugin Issue?
Ref: (a) Crash ID bp-cb196f96-dd38-44d7-bffb-778a22100531.
(b) https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
This user really does not know whether a plugin is involved here, but also, cannot rule that out. And exploring the Plugin Check page with its limited information, has found the following significant issue un-addressed, and thus, mysterious to him.
Please, consider adding to the Plugin Check page, ref. (b), an explanation on this question>> What must one do, i.e., perform what steps, to update a plugin? I.e, is it infallibly sufficient to download & to run the download? Is updating a fully automated process for all plugins?, or even for some plugins? E.g., does updating an Adobe plugin ever require uninstalling the old plugin first (as does updating the Adobe Reader program, and Acrobat, etc.)? How shall the general user of Firefox know precisely what he/she should perform in this regard, when it is well known that the Adobe updates sites generally fail to recognize and advise the user on the question of whether to uninstall first. We see it in forums, that many of us general users have encountered install failures with Adobe updates, and (1) have found that Adobe updates usually do not work well if installed over the old version, and (2) have found that uninstalling Adobe apps often does not go smoothly and fails to complete the job, leaving vulnerable exe's or dll's hanging around to frustrate our subsequent updating. And, Adobe is not the only offender in this way. A frank and helpful mention of this issue would save much wailing and gnashing of teeth, and if uninstallation is a good idea, please explain how to Uninstall a Plugin, because plugins generally lack an Uninstall button in the Add-ons window of Firefox. And, this begs the question, is it desirable to Disable a plugin, before running the updating installation file? Or is there "no benefit" if Disabled first? Please try to write up these aspects plainly. Ideally, from this user's perspective, placement of this ought to be a few sentences directly on the Plugin Check page. Your consideration and adoption of this suggestion is respectfully requested, and it will be much appreciated.

cor-el:
''You can disable plugins here: Tools > Add-ons > Plugins
See also Troubleshooting plugins
Plugins provide a way to use other program to embed content. so you have to go to the program that adds a plugin and check the options (preferences) to disable the plugin.''
Anyone knowledgeable, please comment.
Thanx for suggesting the Disable button, cor-el, but my question addressed Uninstall of Plug-ins. This was due to the now-recognized problem which afflicts Adobe update patches, that the patch doesn't go well unless the old version is Uninstalled first; thus requiring a clean installation of the fully updated application.
It is my understanding that the Disable button does not necessarily uninstall the old files. When I was unaware of this consistently occurring property of Adobe's patches, I had more than one case of Adobe Reader and Acrobat failing to update completely, causing hours of fruitless troubleshooting, and this continued with the most recent patches to Adobe Reader, the one updating it to v9.3.2, as well as earlier ones. Therefore, it seems not unreasonable to expect that the Shockwave Flash plugin that is now flagged as vulnerable again (v10.0.45.2), needs to be Uninstalled before updating.
Is there no dependable method for Uninstalling plugins?
If not, then one wonders, why not? Is there a reason why Mozilla designs Plugins to be different from Extensions in this regard? -
Possible Cascade Issue on 11.1.1.3?
I searched all forums for possible Cascade issues on the add-in and am not finding out anything. We're also up-to date with on the Essbase patches (server and client).
The issue arises when trying to cascade, a spreadsheet is generated but is empty. Likewise, if I select 'One Workbook, Separate sheets', the same thing happens.
We're on office 2007.
many thanks,
cgHi Siva,
I think that these are questions that you should ask on the Infrastructure space since the guys there have way much more knowledge on installations. Additionally, I would suggest to discuss these questions with a consultant who is going to have broader understanding of your requirements.
Regarding question number 1, generally speaking version 11.1.2.3 is considered to be an improved and more stable version of 11.2.2.2.
Regarding question number 3, you need to provide more details like number of users per tool, number of concurrent users, volume of data per tool, requirements for High Availability or Disaster recovery etc…

"Possible precedence issue with control flow operator"
Hi guys
I have following Problem:
Yesterday I made a distribution update from debian wheezy to debian jessie.
Since then I got a problem with a plugin which I'm using for Icinga a monitoring system.
When I run it, I got the error that there is an "Undefined subroutine".
I read on google that I can fix it, with reinstalling the vsphere SDK, but the installation stuck at "CPAN is downloading and installing pre-requisite Perl module "SOAP::Lite"".
I can skip this step with Ctrl+C and at the end it says "This installer has successfully installed...".
But when I run the Plugin I get the error message "Possible precedence issue with control flow operator at /usr/share/perl/5.20/VMware/VICommon.pm line 2147." and the whole plugin stucks.
I tried the following step which I found in this forum and the error message doesn't appear, but the plugin still stucks...
Re: VMware-vSphere-Perl-SDK-5.5.0-1384587 broken with perl 5.20
I have also Perl 5.20.2...
Can you guys help me?
VinzenzOk I could fix it...
I changed the line 2147 to
return (defined $user_agent->cookie_jar and
$user_agent->cookie_jar->as_string ne '');
And this time I waited for a long time and I get a error message that there is a problem with SOAP.
The solution was to downgrade Net-HTTP and libwww-perl with following commands:
perl -MCPAN -e shell
o conf urllist push http://backpan.perl.org
install GAAS/Net-HTTP-6.03.tar.gz
install GAAS/libwww-perl-6.03-tar.gz
The second Command loads older releases to the urllist.
Thx for your help and I hope I could help others with the same problem.

Possible DNS issue with AirPort Express basestation?
Hi all -
Up until recently my Airport Express has been working great. This past weekend I started noticing that website browsing became slow, and some websites would not come up at all (e.g. popular sites like wordpress.org).
Otherwise my internet connection works fine (email works, browsing for the most part is normal for all computers on the network, pc and mac).
I read that this could be a possible DNS issue. I unplugged the AE basestation and plugged my Powerbook directly into my cable modem and was able to get to all websites that I couldn't get to while using the AE. That, and browsing was a heck of a lot faster (it seemed).
Can anyone help me out and point me to a specific setting on the AE that I can toggle, correct, whatever, to solve this (possible) DNS issue?
Thanks!
JeffDear Henry, Thanks for your reply, and we are sorry for having intruded upon the wrong thread with our troubles. Perhaps you could point us to the most pertinent thread. Further pushing credulity Might you assist us further?... We have checked every floor in the building and no new equip has been added, though I can't speculate on the 'hood at large. We added a Time Capsule to the mix hoping that might bring back some stability and speed, but results aren't very promising so far. perhaps you might point us to a resource for professional help, or web sites that may help us define and implement something beyond the ad hoc system we have currently. We have read through the Apple docs regarding Designing Networks, and though informative they don't necessarily explain the nuances / consequences of different configurations, for instance, that WDS will adversely affect net speed. Thanks in advance for your input (should you wish to assist). If you are so inclined I can provide the snap shot of our list of hardware. And again apologies if we are in the wrong place.

[stow] perl problem: Possible precedence issue
Hi there,
It came with the last perl update that I am no longer able to run stow.
I already reinstalled the package but it still fails with the following error:
Possible precedence issue with control flow operator at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/Stow.pm line 1736.
Does someone know how to fix this issue?
Thank you!It looks like it's just a warning that doesn't actually affect how it runs. Anyway, I know almost nothing about Perl, but this patch silences the warning:

GTX Nvidia Kernel crash, possible heat issue ?
I had a crash tonight while working on the timeline of Adobe Premiere CS6. I am on a MacPro 3.1 with a GTX 470 (from macvidcards) under 10.8.4 and its proper drivers. I was doing extensive scrubbing and I could hear the GTX's fan spinning louder than usual. I thought these kernel crashes would dissapear with the latest nvidia drivers, in fact I haven't got a crash for over months until tonight where I was pushing the limit.
Then I opened GPUtest and did a stress test which crashed the screen and locked the system after only 3 minutes of heavy load and fan noise. Flickering dots and rectangles and color hue change. Forced restart.
I went on to purchase an Artic Cooling Acceleto Twin Turbo II graphics card cooler.
I am reasoning that this is a heat issue. Has anyone experienced similar, I still suspect the drivers but after the EVGA Mac Edition I don't know if it is fair to say so for Nvidia. Thanks nbar, with pleasure..
This is what I pulled from the console:

Why Multiple Kernel "issues" w/G4 iMac/Tiger?
Folks:
Lately have had a run of KPs in my ten year old +- G4 iMac . . . so we know it's "old" but overall when it's running well, it's fine. I ran the Apple Hardware test and that shows "OK" . . . I have SmartReporter and that shows fine. I booted up in ext HD and ran DU to Repair Disk, and I ran Onyx as well . . . . Today, I was trying to see if it was related to the browser, lately Ten4Fox, so I switched back to Camino but got the same "we don't support your browser" and KP there as well . . . . Then I tried to not use the internet at all and things were going well for awhile, but then got another KP that way. The computer has stopped generating "Crash Reports" to send to Apple and now just gives the kernel panic in a CLI note in black bars with white text that drops down over the desktop; multiple times the "grey" screen with the "You need to restart" happened, we aren't wasting time doing that now . . . the mouse and screen freezes and the CLI kernel trap info shows up. BTW, I also had done a PRAM reset, and then I saw BDAqua's post here about doing it three times, which I did the other day and it seemed like the problem was fixed . . . until today with 3 of them. Seems like it can happen right on revive from sleep or after running the computer for awhile. Any thoughts? I've been told already, "It's time for a new computer" and I'm reconciled to that in the near-long term as the "answer" . . . just wondering if I can get some insight into troubleshooting my dear old G4 friend and keep it going for awhile longer??? Can anybody hep me? Final note, I've got the int HD partitioned and running Xu/Lu 12.0.4, the crash problem started there and that's not new, but then continued over into the OSX side. Today, I was logged into Xu/Lu and did not have any KP while there . . . but did again back in OSX . . . . Is it "soft" or "hard" ware issue? I can't tell . . . . Many thanks for any insights.
e.e.p.BDAqua:
Ah, "thermal paste" . . . Austin Powers didn't think about that one . . . possibly there is a flaw in the thermal paste . . . . BTW, I did get some expert feedback on one of my earlier crash reports and the different RAM types was pointed out as a possible source of problems . . . and indeed it might be, but that difference has been there since the very first day . . . ten + years ago??? Would that suddenly become a problem? The previous reports didn't seem to offer much in terms of clues . . . this is the first time I saw "uncorrectable machine check" . . . that sounds more serious . . . even ominous . . . maybe this is all due to the impending Halloween????? Hmmmmmmmm . . . .
e.e.p.

Reporting Services Point - possibly permissions issue
I'm having a really hard time configuring a working reporting services point in my test SCCM 2012 R2 environment and was hoping someone might be able to help me work out what's gone wrong.
My servers are WS2008 R2. SQL Server 2008 R2 is installed on the primary site server and holds the site database. I installed SSRS onto a separate site server and added it as a reporting services point. This worked, and I see the list of
reports in the SCCM admin console. However, when I try to run a report - either from the console or via web browser - I get this message:
The default value expression for the report parameter 'usertokensids' contains an error. There are no logon servers available to service the logon request. (rsRuntimeErrorInExpression)
at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReportSoapProxy.OnSoapException(SoapException e)
at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.Internal.Soap.ReportingServices2005.Execution.RSExecutionConnection.ProxyMethodInvocation.Execute[TReturn](RSExecutionConnection connection, ProxyMethod`1 initialMethod, ProxyMethod`1 retryMethod)
at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.Internal.Soap.ReportingServices2005.Execution.RSExecutionConnection.LoadReport(String Report, String HistoryID)
at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.EnsureExecutionSession()
at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.SetParameters(IEnumerable`1 parameters)
at Microsoft.ConfigurationManagement.AdminConsole.SrsReporting.ReportViewerWindowsForms.SetParameterValues_DoWork(Object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e)
SMSAdminUI.log shows this message:
[25, PID:3096][06/12/2014 11:24:05] :[fqdnofprimaryserver] : The request failed with HTTP status 503: Server Error.
Now, the reason I think this is a permissions issue is because srsrp.log on the Reporting Point server shows this:
(!) Error retrieving folders - [Login failed for user 'domain\reportingservercomputername$'.].
(I've removed the actual name here, obviously.)
I'm really puzzled about what's going on here, what is trying to authenticate with the SSRS server's machine credentials, and what for. Looking in SQL Server Management Studio on the primary site server which hosts the SQL database, I can see that
the account has a login listed and it has its default schema listed as DBO. On the SSRS server, in Reporting Services Configuration Manager, the Report Server Service Account is set to a dedicated domain user account. The Current Report Server
Database Credential is set to my own Windows login using Current User - Integrated Security - I can't seem to get it to accept the dedicated user account.
Can anyone help me figure out what's gone wrong and how I fix it, please? I'm by no means a SQL person, and I'm at my wit's end with this!
Thanks,
MThe plot thickens.
The SSRS server has these:
"The report server has detected a possible denial of service attack. The report server is dropping requests for service from the IP address 192.168.113.163" (this is the IP address of the primary site system, which hosts the SQL database)
and then
"Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database"
The primary site system, meanwhile, has got thousands of these:
"Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\SSRSSERVERNAME$'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: 192.168.113.164]" (that's the IP of the SSRS server)
The Windows firewall is off for both systems. They're on an isolated test network. I still don't understand where the setting is that tells it to make SQL queries using the SSRS server's machine account, rather than the dedicated service account
I created.
Any more ideas? Thanks for your help so far - I really appreciate it! -
Possible permissions issue - i used migration assistant from a backup and now i have multiple issues
Hi everyone,
I'd say my techie skills are low to medium so bare that in mind and be gentle with me
So 20" dual core died on Friday. poss psu issue which i will fix in due course. In a fit of extravagance I decided this message from beyond the grave from MR JObs was telling me to buy a new quad core on Saturday morning.
Because old imac was dead i used time machine back up via "migration assistant"
intially it could see the back ups but then seemed to spring to life after 20 mins
Got message saying not all content had transferred but reckon most did except for some safari stuff ( paswords etc).
Then i started to get issues with permissions i think.... asked me for passwords every time i tried to move files between folders or to trash or do pretty much anything.
read something about permissions conflicts when migrating from another admin/home account from and old imac
That when i started to activate my over "confident with technolgy" gene - i set HD permission to owned by "me" instead of system and then applied to all enclosed items
oops
now getting lots of dodgy messages eg every driver on the make brings up eeor message sayuing it was incorrectly installed
ran permissions repair - 25 mins later loads of unexpected acls have been corrected though not all -
still getting error messages about a few which i tracked down manually one by one and, sure enough, are still showing as owned by "me" and not system. Corrected them
Noticed at this point all other .kext files in same loaction have two permissions rows for "system in "get info" window = is this the root of my problem since using migration assitant?
still having issues
software updates won't install via the "software update" function but was able to install a couple of them myself direct from apple website.
back ups won;t back up to drive assigned - just keeps saying T|ime machine could not complete the back up even though there is space on freshly formatted external drive
so guys ..
have just created an unholy mess?
should i reassign "system" as owner for everything and then change foders such as documents and music etc to be owned by "me" or is that tooo simplistic?
should i wait till my old mac is brought back to life and re-do my migration ( since deleted the existing back up from old imac so thats not an option)
should i blame it all on apple and get them to sort it out under warrenty
or should i run naked down the street shouting wibble...
all help gratefully received . MY experience of apple products has been seamless over the years until now and I can't help think I have done some thing bad the wife will never forgive me for
HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You may not have created a mess, it's possible you simply don't know where your data is after migrating. Had you followed the Setup Assistant's on-screen prompts when you initially turned on your new system you would be running just fine by now. My guess is you haven't been exposed to Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips.
Migration Assistant (MA) and Setup Assistant (SA) are cousins, similar but different. The primary difference is MA creates a new user account which can be confusing to some users. If you successfuly migrated then log out of your existing using account and you should see the new user account. Log into that account then you should see the migrated data. If you do then use Pondini's Transferring files from one User Account to another.
However if you have totally made of mess out of things then I'd start over, this time using the Setup Assistant Tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance. -
[SOLVED] Virtual Box PUEL causes reboot, seems to be a kernel issue
Edit: this issue has been resolved with VirtualBox version 3.2.12
About 1 - 2 minutes after launching a Windows VM vbox crashes and causes a hard reboot. I've recompiled the modules and completely reinstalled the package from AUR with no joy. Below are the package versions and segments of log files that are relatively pertinent to the issue.
virtualbox_bin 3.2.10-2
kernel26 2.6.36-3
depends:
'libidl2' 0.8.14-1
'libxcursor' 1.1.11-1
'libxinerama' 1.1.1-1
'libxslt' 1.1.26-2
'curl' 7.21.2-2
'gcc' 4.5.1-1
'make' 3.82-2
'kernel26-headers' 2.6.36-3
'python2' 2.7-3
Seems very similar to this issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105631

Last edited by moted (2010-12-04 00:19:53)I am having a similar issue, I haven't used vbox for a few days, until just now, several upgrades have taken place.
Namely the kernel upgrade and udev come to mind, however after I rebuilt the kernel modules and attempted to use vbox puel it seems to have stopped all events and thrown the laptop on a "loop" type thing. That's the best I can describe it coming from a programming point of view, where it blocks all events until vbox finishes or something it is doing finishes but it never finishes causing me to hard reboot because no key events or mouse events get through(just freezes). Normally in a program I'd just control-c it, for my own that is, and then hunt down the loop, although this loop seems to be at a much deeper level.
Although my issue doesn't happen in any given timeframe, just at a specific point, when it gets to the Windows Logo during the boot after it gets through grub and all of that(I have a dual boot vbox setup).
I was going to post my own bug report here, although since I'm new at this, I'll just share my thoughts in your thread(Hope I'm not breaking any rules or disturbing anyone by posting in your thread, although I didn't see any rules in this forum)
I'm using the same virtualbox_bin version.
Most of the packages are the same version as your except kernel26-headers 2.6.36.1-3 & kernel26 2.6.361-3
Pulled the versions from pacman -Qi <package>
