Post file access early to logs?

I've got an application server that crashes when some file is being accessed. I'd like to find out what file that is. However iPlanet logs the access of a file only after a successful transaction (be it a 200, 404, whatever). So if the application server crashes the transaction is stopped and no log entry is made.
Anyone got any ideas on how to force iPlanet to post logs either before the transaction is finished or to recover from a crashing application server?
Thanks,
-Eric

Unless Web Server crashes, too, even a request that crashes a backend application server should be logged.
If the application server plugin is crashing Web Server, adding a line such as the following immediately below the <Object name="default"> line in obj.conf may assist in diagnosing the problem:
AuthTrans fn=flex-log name="access"
Note that this will result in multiple entries per request in your access log files.

  • How to view file access log (AFP) on Mac OS X Lion (10.7) server?

I want to track the files beeing uploaded and downloaded or deleted on the shares on the server by different users. There has to be some log where the Mac OS writes an entry for every file access (like upload / download / rename / delete) for each user. How can I access it? How can I filter the actions by user account? Do I have to first activate such a logging or is it activated from the first (standard) setup of the Mac OS X Lion server?

    try:
    sudo serveradmin settings afp:activityLog=yes
then the log entries should be at
    /Library/Logs/AppleFileService/AppleFileServiceAccess.log

  • Possible to access earlier versions of a saved PDF file?

Hi, I have a Macbook 10.6.8.  I was having some issues with Preview so I was using a trial version of Wondershare PDF Editor to make some edits on a PDF.  After saving my work, however, it stamped a big watermark onto each page of the PDF, making a part of each page difficult to read.  Opening up the PDF in another program does not make the watermark go away.  I only have one copy of the PDF and would like to revert back to an earlier version without the watermark.  According to Wondershare, the only way to remove the watermark is to purchase the program, which I don't want to do.  Does my Mac allow me to access earlier versions of a saved file?
    Thanks!

Hmm!!!  You know what, I do have an old version!!  However, the PDF I want already has edits from Preview on 100+ pages.  The version on Time Machine is completely blank without any edits.  I guess the blank is better than nothing so if I don't find any other answer, I'll do that.  Thanks!!

  • Read-only file access from network volume

I get an read-only file access from network volume problem while sharing a drive from Snow Leopard to a Tiger install. Most of files were opening well, but *.fp7 (FileMaker) and *.xls (Excel) files won't open dealing with a read-only error.
As descibed in the last post of http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1406977 the client have the same share name of the server. Renomming it resolved the error!
    Thanks!

right then, as it looks like I'm talking to myself....
I have just wiped clean the Macbook Pro.
I installed Leopard from scratch, then installed Office 2008.
Logged back onto the network share, and the read-only error came up again, ONLY in Excel.
    bugger.
Did the same thing with my Macbook and all is fine.
Copy the file to the local hard drive, opens ok.
I then copied the file to another Mac on the network.
    mmmm, opens fine.
    what's the difference....
mmmm, the machine it opens fine from is running 10.4
the machine which hosts all the data is running 10.3.9
    could this be the problem.
Just done a software update check on the 10.3 machine and there are some security updates that need doing.
Going to run that now and see what happens, otherwise I think the iMac running 10.3.9 is going to need to come up to 10.4 and fingers crossed this will solve it.

  • How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator

RE: How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator AND/OR how to repair drive with "Invalid catalog PEOF"
    Hello,
My MacBook Pro computer’s hard drive is not booting.
I booted with the base operating system and ran Disk utilities and I got the following messages:
        Invalid catalog PEOF
The volume could not be verified completely.
This disk needs to be repaired.
Disk utility can’t repair this disk. Backup as many files as possible, reformat the disk,
        and restore your backed-up files.
The problem is that I have a couple of USERS set up on this computer, and it won’t let me backup the files of the second user.  The folders are locked and I can’t access them, even though I am logged in as the administrator.
I made a boot disk on my other computer ( a MacPro Early 2008 ) desktop computer with the DiskWarrior 4.4 updater,
but it won’t boot on my MacBook Pro.
How can I backup these user files so that I can copy them back once I fix the drive?
or better yet,  How can I repair the Invalid catalog PEOF on this drive?
Thank you in advance for your time!
    Bill

Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition which will erase all data.
Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

  • System has amnesia about non-admin access to system log

Time Machine Buddy often doesn't show current backups. So I used the tip from Pondini to give my user account system log access. That worked fine.
But it doesn't "stick." I fired up the Console app this morning, and the system log is grayed out.
Any idea why, and what to do?
    Thanks,
    Harv

    Hey James,
I did indeed get a reply in the Unix forum, and it worked fine. Here's the content:
*BobHarris posted "Re: System has amnesia about non-admin access to system log" in "System has amnesia about non-admin access to system log" on Jun 2, 2010 6:21:28 PM.*
    *You could try*
    *sudo /bin/chmod +a "harv47 allow read,file_inherit" /var/log*
*This assumes that your usename is 'harv47' on your Mac. This also assumes that the log files are created in the /var/log directory.*
*In theory this will make sure that any file created in /var/log will inherit an ACL that allows harv47 read access to that file.*
*However, I have not spent much time working with Mac OS X ACLs, so your mileage may vary.*
*BobHarris posted "Re: System has amnesia about non-admin access to system log" in "System has amnesia about non-admin access to system log" on Jun 2, 2010 8:13:24 PM.*
*Oh yea. You can view the ACL you applied, and see if the inherit_file worked using*
    *ls -leO@a /var/log*
*again, assuming /var/log is the directory containing the log you are trying to read.*
The system log continues to be accessible, even after the midnight "rollover."
I'm a happy camper. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not, but TM Buddy has so far continued to show the log excerpts after the rollover as well.
BTW, the SpamSieve app (Bayesian spam filter for Mail) is one of those database apps mentioned in your tips. It accounts for about 1 GB every backup.
    Thanks!
    Harv

  • Posting files on users desktop over network

    This is the situation:
I have 10 mac's, some with Tiger, some with Leopard, all in 1 network.
Every mac has 1 admin account (for me), and 1 or 2 other account for the people who work on that mac. So I can connect to every mac (over the network) and log in using the admin login.
    My question:
Is there a way to post files on the users desktop, because I can access the entire HD with my admin account, but I cannot see into the users personal folders. I can only drop files in their drop box folder.
I hope someone knows a anwser to this!
    Greetings

    Do you have sudo access?
If you do have sudo access, then you could establish an ssh key using ssh-keygen, then propagate the $HOME/.ssh directory and its contents to all 10 systems.
Now you should be able to use scp to copy the files to each system.
Once all the files are copied, you can use ssh into each system, then use
    *sudo mv copied.file ~username/Desktop*
    *sudo chown username ~username/Desktop*

  • Sql agent job getting file access denied error

I'm not sure if this question belongs in this forum. Please move it if you want to.
Here is my question. I have an ssis package that is running into an error at the file system task trying to move a file. The package is deployed to the catalog and I am running the package using the stored procedure
    [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id
When I execute this stored proc in Management Studio while logged in under a sysadmin, everything works fine. But when I call the same TQL in SQL Agent job, I get a file access denied error. This has something to do with the id that is getting used
to run the package and I am not sure how to track that down. Any help would be appreciated.
I've check the windows permission on both the id that is running the SQL Agent and SQL SSIS Service. Both seem to have the right windows permission.

  • Providing developers with access to WebLogic logs

    Hi all,
I keep getting asked by developers for access to WebLogic logs in restricted test environments. But due to security policies, I can't just create an account for them. In one of my previous roles we just gave developers access to a WeLogic monitor account (read-only), but I find the WebLogic admin console is not user friendly for viewing logs.
To overcome this, I created a really simple WebLogic app that lets the developers access all logs files on the managed servers.
I've blogged a quick how-to here for anyone interested in doing the same: [http://connectionserver.blogspot.com/2009/05/listing-directories-simple-weblogic.html|http://connectionserver.blogspot.com/2009/05/listing-directories-simple-weblogic.html]
    Hope it helps someone :)
P.S. Perhaps someone could modify it to restrict access to certain roles.
    -Mr Jones.

You may run into incompatible class versions issue. Basically you have altogehter 2 different JVMs. One for EJBs (utility framework as you defiined using 1.3). Another JVM is weblogic server using JDK 1.6 where you have Client to remotely access those EJBs methods. Going back, when you generate the client stubs and skeletons, and refer them on your client side, did you ran into any issues like with incompatible class versions.

  • Server 2008r2 and windows 7 pro slow to no networkshare file searching and file access (green progress bar)

we are running a windows server 2008r2 sp1 domain controller and a 3com gigabit switch to which 7 windows 7 pro computers are connected. We are only using the windows server to distribute a few printers and as a network share (z drive).
we are storing all files (word documents only) centrally on the server (z share), and files are accessed and written to the z share.
Problem is that file access from the z share on the windows 7 client computers is at best buggy. we are able to browse the z-share, but as soon as we want to search the z-share for files (f.i. use file explorer with "content: memorandum") the green
progress bar shows and no search is performed. something like alphabetically sorting a directory on map/file name on the z-share also shows a green bar with no sorting. manually going to the files works.
One thing i noticed, sometimes not all files that one user created and stored on the server is visible and can be found by another user. I prefer to disable all offline file caching setting, because that feature is not used. no files should be made accessible
offline. i don't know where to change that on the server side.
I am reluctant to experiment on the server end (2008r2 sp1), so i tried a few suggested solutions on the client end (windows 7 client)
I tried disabling offline file caching
i tried properties (z share) ==> advanced and map optimizing and several options there
i tried disabling the smbv2 protocol and disabling the smbv1 protocol (using
sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi command etc. posted by microsoft)
    i tried disabling windows defender
i tried accessing the z share via ip and server name (the share is mapped via its servername, e.g. dennis-dc1\share). still the same
file searching on the clients c drive ('own harddrive') works much better, file searching on the server also works.
any suggestions or solutions that i can test on the client side, as mentioned i am reluctant to change something on the server side. if a solutions works, i prefer to change it on the server side.

    Hi,
The issue could be due to windows indexing service taking long time in sorting and searching in mapped drives. Please try the steps belwo to disable windows indexing service or search service on the windows 7 client to resolve the issue.
You can click on Start and select Control Panel, click on
Programs and Features, go into the Turn Windows Features on or off section Scroll down the list and uncheck the box next to Indexing Service or Windows Search.
    Best Regards,
    Mandy

  • NFS File Access problem

    Hello,
I am having problems trying to "tail" an existing file.
When the file is being written into, I can tail it without any problem.
The problem rises when the file is already complete, and I try to open it.
I tried to make a small demo program but for some reason I am unable to get the demo program to give the same behaviour.
Below is the class in which it all goes wrong.
I basically opens the file usring RandomAccessfile.
when I try to retrieve the length of the file a bit further, my ascii file I am viewing already changed to .nfs01231353434 something.
    But all gets displayed ok.
When I then close the text pane in which this tail class is logging, the file itself is deleted.
As this has something to do with NFS here is the setup :
The java jar file is located on a remote solaris disk, so is the ASCII file I am trying to view.
The local machine where I am running my application is Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-52.
Apologies if this information is kinda vague but as I am unable to supply a demo program, I dont know else how to explain my problem.
The class that does the "tailing"

  • Auditing all users file access - too much information

Hi, I have enabled a GPO With the following: Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Advanced Audit Policy Configuration\Audit Policies\Object Access -> Audit File System -
    Success on a file server.
After that, I have enabled successful Create files/Create Folders on a folder for the built-in group Everyone.
That part works fine, I can see when users are creating files on the folders. But I also get a lot of Extreme amounts of other events logged in the Security log, and everything is coming from the backup agent running on the server (NetBackup in this case).
How come that a backup agent is creating the events like this? It makes filtering much harder afterwards. The business requirements is to audit Everyone who is adding files to a specific folder, not all the rest of the server. The server
    is Win2008 R2.

I feel your pain, I turned on logging on a file server and found the security log filling 4GB in a couple of hours. I think the key is being very selective about what you audit. I found this article useful and it had some powershell and ideas for helping
make sense of the information overload - http://blogs.technet.com/b/mspfe/archive/2013/08/27/auditing-file-access-on-file-servers.aspx
In my opinion though you really need a third party solution to make this viable, two I've looked at are
    Netwrix File Server Auditor and
FileAudit which seem very similar in functionality and ease of use. These basically read in the event log to provide long term archive and reporting on it.
    Good luck,
    Tim

  • File access/locking problems, most notably with AutoCAD

A number of sporadic problems of AutoCAD users who've been working away
suddenly not able to write to the file they've been working on. If
multiple people try to use the same Xrefs, often some will get that the
file is corrupted report by AutoCAD.
What is reproducible is one of the Xref problems and it has given us a
bit of a work around to keep working.
    To Reproduce:
    Start AutoCAD(2009), open a file with base(Xref)
Save the base (no change needed) without closing, and refresh
the base disappears from view, and when we look in the 'Xref Manager'
we see that the Base has a status of 'Needs Recovery'. This applies
even when multiple people had the Xref in read only view, that it is
now unavailable, but when the full drawing is shut down and reopened
by the one who had saved, the Xref is just fine.
Autosave is not triggering the problem.
This has been reproduced on the newest version of ACAD as well, just
    slightly different wording of errors.
OES2 sp3 servers (in VMWare) with mostly XPsp3 clients but a few
Windows 7 ones as well. The clients mostly have the newest clients
installed, but there are some of the XP boxes with 4.91.4 still on
    them.
Just migrated the main data volume from NetWare 6.5.8 to OES2 Linux and
immediately started having the problem. 100% of file access is via
NCP. no CIFS is configured, to the point we have cross-protocol-locks
set to 0 (Zero, i.e. Off).
I think I've been through every combination of file locking settings of
server vs workstation without any apparent change.
Still working out different tests to do to find what makes a
    difference.
Observations that might just lead to clues toward the root cause:
    - On NetWare, if a user left files open over night, we could still see
those being listed as opened in Monitor. Past history with these users
is that there was always several showing as open every night even when
we were sure they'd all been gone for hours. Now when we check the all
the volumes late in the evening, they've been showing no files open.
perhaps that is a clue to a problem in lock tracking.
    - While still at OES2 sp2, the pilot team kept giving vague
descriptions of problems using ACAD against files on OES2, but those
all went away after applying SP3, so after 2 months of one small group
running ACAD against files stored on OES2-linux, we migrated the bulk
of the data as the last volume from a failing NetWare 6.5.8 cluster
    (recreating SBDs was getting tiring).

Glad to hear that your (and our) customer's life became less complicated.
Keep up doing the good work !
    Best regards
    Hans
    Hi Hans,
i have just helped a customer to migrate their data from NW65SP8 to OES2SP3 and hit the same problem with the CAD group using AutoCAD 2004 on Windows XP with NC491SP3 + some Postpatches
Do we have a release date for the next OES2 SP3 Scheduled Maintenace Patch?
The last available is from May and has been apparently released the 31st of May.
Do we have a chance to get the ftf in someway?
Many thanks in advance and best regards,
