Post your changes upon disabling discrete video card.

Hi, I had problems with disabling discrete video card on my laptop and results are very disappointing. I think its good to compare my results with others. So could you post it, pls.
For example my results:
- laptop asus x53sc
- nvidia 520mx
- temp: 57-58 -> 52-53 Celcius (fan still make noise, on windows its 45 C and fan is unhearable)
- battery: 1:50 > 2:30 (on windows it is 3:30 geez)
So as you see its not much. Maybe I do something wrong, thats why I want compare it with others.

I am not sure if simply echoing "OFF" is the right way to do this:
sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
1:DIS: :DynOff:0000:01:00.0
I have a Sandybridge - NV GT540M hybrid, so maybe this doesn't cover your cases.
But there were a lot of changes in kernel 3.12 regarding hybrid laptops, both for ATI/AMD and nVidia, so many instructions you find in the wiki and elsewhere could be outdated.

  • Vgaswitcheroo and disabling discrete video card

I have a hybrid laptop -- Intel Ivybridge + AMD 7970M -- and I've been using the latest open source driver stack, keeping up to date with the latest developments.
With 3.13 we're going to have runtime power management, which will be fantastic for battery life. However, I'm running into an issue: whenever I disable my discrete card using `echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch` one of two things happens:
        a) I get a ton of error messages in dmesg, cpu locks it looks like
        b) I get no errors, but /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo disappears
I noticed this when testing some of the 3.13 changes, that my computer would mostly jus crash with CPU lock errors. I thought it was just an issue with 3.13, but going back to 3.12 I tried manually disabling the discrete card and, while X was running, my system would lockup, or, if X was *not* running, the vgaswitcheroo directory would vanish.
Has anyone run into this issue before, or maybe know a way of fixing it?
    Thanks!

  • Mountain Lion change color profile when use discrete video card

Sorry, but slightly altering after losing three hours in forums where no one ever answered ...
    Thanks.

    Let's see...
Sounds like you're running into an expected issue if you make an alias to removeable media.  The same thing would happen if you made the alias to a folder on a DVD-R disc or CD-R.  If you eject the original, you disable the alias.
If you copy the entire SD card volume to your drive, the PRIVATE package should copy across.  Then, as a folder on your hard drive rather than a volume on removeable media, you could make an alias to the STREAM package for quicker access later.
I'm pretty sure that Handbrake, like Prmeiere Pro, can see the MTS files directly.  That is, it's not dependant on the other folders in the PRIVATE directory sturcture.  As such, you could copy the contents of the STREAM package to another folder on your drive.  Just be mindful of the default MTS file names if you're using more than one SD card (you don't want to accidentally copy 00001.MTS from one card over 00001.MTS from another card).
As long as Handbrake sees MTS directly, you could even rename the MTS files after you've copied them.
On a side note, I almost always archive my SD cards with the data structure intact.  More often than not, that file structure is important to corretly access the video stored within that structure.  If something unexpected happens while working with the MTS files, it is good to have the original file structure to go back to.  Although, SD cards are getting to be so low cost that sometimes I just label the SD card and store it for archiving.

  • MBP 2011 Discrete Video Card Freezes iTunes

I just got an MBP 2011 17" 2.2Ghz i7. I have not run into any overheating issues (as addressed in other topics). However, I have isolated a very odd conflict with iTunes and the discrete video card. I can play games such as Starcraft 2 using the discrete graphics card without incident, so the card itself seems to be working fine. Somehow iTunes brings it to it's knees, though.
If I am using dynamic video card switching or have the discrete card selected and open iTunes, the entire OS locks up for about 10 seconds at a time, with about 1 second in between each lockup where things process. My mouse is free, but other applications are also locked up. If I quit iTunes, the problem goes away within 10 seconds or so. If I switch to using the integrated graphics, I can open iTunes and use it without a problem, no lockups at all.
I have tried completely removing iTunes (including all applicable plists, etc), then re-installing. No change. I have also tried re-installing Snow Leopard entirely and opening iTunes immediately after install. No change, still locks up. The Console app does not report anything relating to the issue that I can see.
I have the problem isolated and repeatable. There is some conflict between iTunes and the AMD Radeon HD 6750 discrete video card. Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone have any ideas to try? Or is this just something that will be fixed by a new video card driver released by Apple in the near term?

    Hi,
I do have the problems to, didn't know it was a problem of iTunes. I thought it might be my ram(changed it myself to 8GB ram to save 160$!), or my harddrive(changed it to 7200rpm that i already had).

  • How to disable other video card?

I have a HP Pavilion g6 1217et model laptop. It getting worse everyday. Using two video cards is killing my computer. I have to disable other video card but it doesnt have a option as the other g6 models have. What can I do?

I mean by saying "killing my computer", my computer gets so hot and starts lagging. There is switch option for apps but I dont think it works. I used to get more FPS from the games, but now. When I see the 25 FPS, I'm crying.
Yes there is an option like that. I made that image while I had my last HP product lioan HP Envy 17-3200ea. It had switchable graphics. You are going to have to dig a little deeper into the Catalyst Control Center options.  Which version of CCC do you have installed?
I recommend that you do a search of the forum with switchable graphics as the key words.  I and others have gone over the subject ad nauseum and it does not serve a purpose to reinvent the wheel.
How long have you had the Windows installation in place in your notebook?
It may be worth your while to refresh it with a factory recovery if it has been a few years. You can save your game save files to an external disk.

  • How to disable discrete graphics card on dv7?

My dv7 6000 CTO (XW899AV) has been having graphics card issues for quite a while now (frequent screen flashes followed by error notifications), but lately it's gotten a lot worse.  Now I get a black screen after just a few minutes of use.
I'm nearly positive the problem lies with the discrete graphics card (ATI 6770M).   I'd like to disable the discrete card and only use the integrated Intel HD 3000.  Unfortunately the BIOS seems to hide the option to do this.  I tried disabling the ATI card in the device manager, but when I rebooted the card was enabled again.  Is there a way to disable the discrete card, even though HP seems hell bent on preventing me from doing so?  If I can't, the laptop is basically a brick.

I see that you are looking to disable your discrete graphics card. As you have seen that isn't going to work as the notebook is designed to work with both graphics card. What are the error notifications are you getting? If you can give me that exact error message we might be able to fix the cause of the problem. What operating system are you using?

  • Upgrading My Discrete Video Card

Hello, I have an issue with upgrading a video card for the HP Pavilion p6-2022uk, I previously had a different card in the HP a GT 430 installed but wanted to upgrade to the new GTX 750 ti for more performance checking the specification of the new card with a minimum of 300w and seeing that it did not require any external power I believed that card was compatible. So I removed the old drivers of the GT 430 and swapped the cards when I turned the computer on the monitor turned on and the graphics card seemed to be working with the fan spinning but it would not allow for me to get past the bios screen and seemed to reject the card. So after trying to talk to EVGA about a solution with limited success I was recommended to ask for help from HP I have returned the card but if there is a solution you can provide that would be most helpful so that I can reorder the graphics card. The only area that I have not tested is an update of the BIOS found on your site but the only improvements specified with the update was that -
Resolves issue with system hang during POST when a touch screen monitor is connected
Resolves issue with F12 hotkey malfunction after loading BIOS defaults via any method
These two fixes amended by the update did not seem to be relevant to my issue any advice would be greatly appreciated. So the BIOS is now updated to AMI 7.16 23/03/2012
Full specifications of the GTX 750 ti graphics card can be found here http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-750-ti/specifications

pavilion g6 2284sr. I have not menu in BIOS to do this. I have not menu in Catalyst control center to activate discret card for all processes. i have not any rules for do anything with this problem. Pls can you give me bios programm version that wiil give me rules. I don't know is my discret card all right. Please do not describe me how i must to assign programms for each graphic adapter.
And where i can read information about all components of hardware for this notebook.

For each clip you can go to the audio portion of inspector and uncheck/disable the tracks you don't desire. That would take longer than Tom's method, but I think the audio won't show up as a blank later on.

Yur videoram increases dinamically when some game uses it.
965Express i low-end videocard and it is not able to bear modern games  at all, soyou'd not worry about videoram amount - it will not helpgaining better game performance.

  • Desktop is not defaulting to PCI Express video card

Installed a Nvidia GTX 560TI w/appropriate power supply AFTER disabling secure boot and enabling legacy support.  The computer booted to the video card after the second try reboot, drivers successfully installed.  Later after attempting to wake the computer from sleep it has defaulted back to the onboard video WITHOUT restarting.  Now will not recognize PCI express card.

    Hi,
What power supply are your using?  The stardard HP 460 watt power supply is insufficient for the NVIDIA 560 TI as it requires two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors.
Go back into the BIOS and make sure that Legacy mode is enabled and Secure boot is disabled. Save the changes and power off. Now power up and see if the system recognizes the discrete video card.
BTW - the PC needs to completely power down and back up before the BIOS will rescan for hardware changes.

  • Lenovo H430 video card problem

    Hi All,
I searched a little bit through the forum but didn't find an answer to the problem that I'm having. Apologies if it's been answered and I just missed it..
I have a H430 desktop with an i3-2120. I recently bought a Quadro 600 to install into the box. When I install the video card and turn on the box, all I see is the Lenovo boot screen. Nothing happens, then I heard 2 beeps. Normally, I would have associated this with the RAM, but the machine runs fine when I'm using the integrated graphics.
I'm using the original 280 watt power supply, but the Quadro only uses 40 watts max. Any ideas on what the problem might be??
    Thanks in advance!

    hi spikeyboi,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Check this thread posted by ParadiseDecay as a few people found it helpful to resolve their video card upgrade problem.
    The solution was to:
    1. Boot into the BIOS (by pressing F1 on startup) without the discrete video card
    2. On the BIOS, navigate to the Startup tab and look UEFI, CSM, or Secure Boot and set the value to either Disable / Legacy or Compatibility.
    3. Press F10 to save the settings and exit BIOS
    4. Power off the PC, Insert the discrete video card and test
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I add a video card to my Pavilion P6774Y?

Twice my screen blurred out and when it came back, Windows 7 said there had been a graphics problem, and then restarted.  I am assuming the integrated video on my HP Pavilion is dying.  If this is a correct assessment, what is a recommended video card for this machine and how do i add it?

  • Windows 8.1 freezes while booting up with discrete graphic card T520

    Hi all,
Hoping someone can help me here. If I use my discrete video card (nvs 42000m) to boot into windows, it will freeze on the sign in page or sometimes on the metro page however when Optimus is enabled it works just fine.
So I thought it was a driver issue. I went to Nvidia and downloaded their latest video card driver for windows 8.1. No help
Uninstalled that, went to Lenovo's support site and installed their recommended driver and all other windows 8 drivers. Again it would freeze
Booted into safe mode uninstalled that, turned optimus back on, and this time used Windows update to install my video drivers (intel and Nvidia both this time).
Didn't work. So I spent maybe another hour or so fiddling and after many restarts i finally found the culprit. It was the Lenovo monitor driver. As soon as I uninstalled that, everything worked fine and I could finally use my laptop with optimus disabled and discrete video card enabled.
Windows update keeps recommending me to update the monitor driver but if I do, then it freezes again so I'm just leaving it as the default generic monitor.
The reason why I made this thread is to inform and save potential users in the future who have a similar laptop to mine (t520 with hd 3000 and nvidia 42000m) with Windows 8 installed and they happen to choose to solely run their laptop with the discrete graphics card, remember to uninstall your monitor driver.
I am open to recommendations and other alternatives.

  • [Elite e9180f] Possible to upgrade stock video card to Nvidia GTX 650-660 (or similar)?

    Hi all,
I have an Elite e9180f which has the stock NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 video card. I would like to upgrade it to possibly the level of a GTX 650 - 660 (normal or Ti) card. I realize I will need to upgrade the power supply to support it but my concerns are:
    - Heat in the case. Could I overcome this by perhaps adding an add-in fan to a spare card slot?
    - PCIe. The system is PCIe 2.0 while the card is 3.0. Is there any issue with this?
    - Physical card length?
    - Other possible unforseen issues?
    Appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

    - Heat in the case. Could I overcome this by perhaps adding an add-in fan to a spare card slot?
Heat in the case shouldn't be an issue if you upgrade to a decent power supply with a good sized fan. The Corsair CX500 and CX600come highly recommened and are known to fit in most HP cases.
    - PCIe. The system is PCIe 2.0 while the card is 3.0. Is there any issue with this?
You won't realize the full theoretical bandwidth of the PCIe 3.0 card but it should work on your computer without issue.
    - Physical card length?
This is always a concern. Please measure the inside of your case, from front to back, along the PCIe x16 slot. Others have reported installing cards as long as 10.75 inches.
    - Other possible unforseen issues?
Please see Dave_G's Guide for Selecting a Discrete Video Card for helpful information, questions , and concerns about this subject.
