Power saving broken with Radeon Mobility X1400

So to move to systemd, I rebooted, and am now running awfully hot and loud. The CPU is scaling fine, but not video.
cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/radeon_pm_info
default engine clock: 392000 kHz
current engine clock: 391500 kHz
default memory clock: 350000 kHz
current memory clock: 342000 kHz
It never changes, like it is stuck at default clocks, which I assume it is.
cat /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
dynpm
That at least reads correctly, but I suspect it's not working.
echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
echo auto > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
The above has no effect at all, either.
Finally, in Xorg.0.log:
[ 1132.325] (WW) RADEON(0): Option "DynamicPM" is not used
[ 1132.325] (WW) RADEON(0): Option "ClockGating" is not used
[ 1132.325] (WW) RADEON(0): Option "DynamicClocks" is not used
Up until my last reboot, all was well. Now it's not. But, everything looks fine, as far as my reading of any documentation does. My kernel has not changed, but Xorg may well have updated, and apparently broke.
Setting a low profile seems to, work, however:
echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
cat /debug/dri/0/radeon_pm_info
default engine clock: 392000 kHz
current engine clock: 128250 kHz
default memory clock: 350000 kHz
current memory clock: 135000 kHz
PCIE lanes: 1
Any ideas? The low profile can't even play videos well.

The X1400 definitely can drive a 1920x1080 monitor through the onboard VGA out

Apart from this you should not try the driver from amd but test this one from aur:  http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25105
    Thank you!!
That was exactly what I wanted to know!
I was using the catalyst 9.4 drivers in the AUR and was searching for the legacy drivers from the AUR.
Thanks again! Will try and post the results.

  • Full range of power levels on GPU? (Radeon Mobility X1400, I think)

As per wiki article, power levels can be set to a range of mid to high, or to low, but not a range of low to high. Auto is documented as never going low, and dynpm simply doesn't. I can't seem to find a way to seamlessly utilize the low clock/voltages based on load, which means my notebook either handles video kind of poorly, or runs awfully toasty, and will chew up more battery than it needs to when not plugged in. Effectively, what I'm looking for the video equivalent to the conservative CPU governor.
Is there a way to effectively get single-head power saving to work as it aught to, where an idle GUI properly runs at at a low power state, but ramps up when needed, without temporarily freezing the display (as occurs when changing power profiles or methods)?

ChoK wrote:Catalyst doesn't work with kms, you have to put nomodeset in your grub boot line iirc.
Catalyst is in AUR. I don't have an ATI card so can't comment on the driver merits/stability/features but what are you doing with it? office/web/music or gaming/GL heavy apps?
Just some gaming (eg Minecraft) that requires OpenGL

  • MOVED: P55 does not support power saving technologies with OC?

I heard that when EIST, C1E is working, then the voltage is lower then 1v on 9x mode.
Since your OC'ing, Spread Spectrum should be disabled. Your particular CPU (whatever one it is), may require more than 1V. at 9X. The only power saving feature I usually use when OC'd is EIST, with C1E & C-State disabled. See how it does in that configuration. If you don't get any BSOD's or other problems, CPU V. on Auto should be fine.

  • Changing to power-saving results in losing picture on the screeen

    Hi,
Product name: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment Notebook PC support.
    Product number: LM610EA#A2N
When changing to power-saving GPU, then Radeon got disabled and no picture on the screeen is shown.
I really had been facing a problem with my Windows 7 Home premium 64Bit, then I have only done a repair install, which
didn't delete all the drivers and programs. However, before doing the repair install, I was recommended to uninstall AMD
Readon and Intel(R) Management Engine Interface.(AS shown below). Thus, I have uninstalled the AMD Readon, and Intel(R)Management Engine Interface.
Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:
These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these
devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's
website to search for updated drivers.
System devices: Intel(R) Management Engine Interface
These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel, and search for "uninstall a program". (Note: Programs marked as * can be safely reinstalled after the upgrade.)
    ATI Catalyst Control Center *
When the repair install got completed, then I found that Grphics adapter is still functining well since there are no ! mark in front of the adapters: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family and Radeon(TM) HD 6770M in the device manager.
Once I changed the GUP from High-performance GPU to Power-saving GPU, then I lost the pircuter on the Screen.
When I lost the picuter on the screen while on Windows in normal mode, I booted to the safe mode, then opened the device manager, and I saw that Radeon(TM) HD 6770M was disabled
To get picture again,  I enabled Radeon(TM) HD 6770M (screen shot below) while in Safe mode:
When restarting my PC and started Windows in the noraml mode,  the picture returned on the screeen.
Whenever changing to power-saving GPU, then the same problem happens.
Will I need to reinstall the AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver, although there are no ! mark in front of the Intel(R) HD Graphics Family and Radeon(TM) HD 6770M  in the device manager?

    Thank you so much indeed,
Could you please take some of your precious time out to really answer these questions below of mine?
Firstly:: I really have run this Utility(amdcleanuputility) to remove all components of the prvious installation of AMD Radeon and Mobile Inte Graphics.
I was propmted that  tool will do as it is shown below in the screen shot.
I agreed. Then, it completed. Is 'AMD cleanup utility' recommended by you?
Then, the graphics adapters in the device manager became as follows:
Secondly: I think that it is now the point to reinstall AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver_Software Packaging Numbr(SP55092)_Driver Version 8.882.2.3000.
Thirdly: Moreover, I would be saying that I lost the audio on my System once the (amdcleanuputility) has completed, although its icon is still intact(screen shot below)
Must I need to reinstall IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver_Sp55094_Version6.10.6345.0????
Finally::  in your link about downloading the drivers for my product name. I found Driver-Graphics (5) . However, all what I need is the finall one which is an already-downloaded file with me. Could you please let me know what about the other four graphics drivers????????

    hello macs1944,
which gfx driver is already installed on your system?
You can get new driver direct from lenovo, use the Lenovo program System Updater,
you find it if you´ll click the Support&Downloads link on the very top of this forum page.
It seeks for new drivers for your system.
Another method is to get modded ATI-drivers from elsewhere in the net.
    Some sites offer modded drivers.
Search Google with term: modded ati driver
The driver from ATI direct will not work.

  • Problem with radeon driver and Xorg

Hoping someone can help with this problem.
I would like to try and use the open source ati driver over the proprietary fglrx driver, however when I use this driver and I try to test my Xorg configuration it enters into X without any problems (mouse cursor appears and is functional) but when I Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to exit back to the console my screen resolution is completely distorted so that I can't read anything.  I can enter commands and can only use a reboot command to get it functional again.  I do not have this problem with the fglrx driver.
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop with an ATI Mobility X1400 graphics card.

It is very possible to have direct rendering on YOUR card (r5xx) with the radeon(ati) driver, but you need a lot of packages that are still in testing, and it is a somewhat daunting task to sort through everything.
Most importantly, you need x-server 1.5 and mesa 7.1+
The packages that you need & are newer than core/extra are (all can be had from testing, except libgl):
    mesa >= 7.1
    xf86-input-evdev 2.0.4
    xf86-video-ati >= 6.9.0
    xorg-server >= 1.4.99.906
libgl >= 7.1  ** has to be built from a with ABS/pkgbuild, because you need to add r300 & radeon dri-drivers in the configure **
I have an x1650 (rv535) and have been running the radeon driver WITH direct rendering since JULY, and the performance is very good. I can run compiz without skipping a beat (while playing WOP), 2800FPS on glxgears, and ** play video WITHOUT TEARING **!!
Please read a lot of what's going on in this forum:
    http://www.phoronix.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43 (open source ati/amd)
I hope this gives you some hope that it can be done.
Fight the good fight FOSS for ALL!
BTW, the radeon(ati) driver is better than radeonhd for our cards!!!

  • Is my MBP broken forever? It won't charge or power on even with the battery unplugged

    Hello,
My 2011 MacBook Pro has completely died.
Around a month ago I set it down (carefully), it made a clicking noise and would not turn on. The charger light was still green but would not power back up. I unplugged the battery and it was working fine with the charger alone so I presume that the battery was the problem but did not buy a battery as I had no money/apple appointments are apparently like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
Then I was using it, moved it slightly and it turned off again, would power up but only when the charger was plugged in without pressing the power button AND with the screen closed. It did this a few times and then will no longer charge or turn on. The charger shows no light. I do carry it around quite a lot for my job but it hasn't received any damage in the time it has been broken.
this also happens after I had cleaned the MacBook down and installed Yosemite.
Is it a write off or just the battery?

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • Msi bing bang 2 power saving with overclocking

i just found out that the mobo doesnt have the vcore offset function which was how i overclocked my last chip last year. How can you overclock and keep power saving functions? is it possible? i will have a 4930k will it mean i can only change the multiplier if i want power saving features?

Many prefer the 'Turbo' (Core Ratio in 'CPU Features' sub section) OC method over the CPU Ratio. To keep power saving, OC on CPU V. of Auto, get what you can out of it with VDroop set to 100%.

  • Overclock with power saving states

    Hi
    3770K + MSI Z77A-GD55
I had previously a Gigabyte board and I could overclock my cpu and still enter power saving states automatically lowering multiplier and voltage. But with this MSI board it seems I can only get full OC frequency (4.5Ghz) or I could go with no OC and use turboboost to 3.9Ghz. Is it possible to have 4.5Ghz overclock and also automatic power saving states that lower the multiplier and voltage? Eg 16x-45x multi
I think I have all the power saving options enabled in bios.
    Thank you in advance

I got it running correctly now. Liveupdate installed some outdated bios. Installed manually the newest and now I have turbo multiplier settings for each core in clickbios.
I'll be honest, personally, I would stay away from Live Update.
Nothing against MSI's utility, but I can't tell you how many times we've dealt with issues related to MSI Live Update causing the problem.
    Better to do it yourself.

  • Z77A-G43 OC 4.3 with power saving work, thanks xmad

Z77A-G43 OC 4.3 with power saving work , Thanks xmad
Goes up @ 4.3GHz on full load, then come down to 1.6GHz idle( perfect)  try with prime95 about a hour, temperature when up to 71c then between 58-65c
Set all to auto, then enter the cpu features.
Set the power levels short / long to 255 and the power duration to 2 seconds.
Then increase the turbo speed there to w/er you wish 4.2-4.5 are typical everyday overclock settings.
    ( OK mine if i'm not mistaking it's 1-core ratio limit [43] ,
    2-core ratio limit [43] , 3-core ratio limit [43] 4-core ratio limit [43]
    Pic attached
    Other settings needed.
Vdroop: 75-100% ( NOT available on mine)
    Pll : enabled
    Overspeed protection: Disabled
    Enhanced Turbo: Enabled
Ok now i'm experimenting a little bit, i try 44 for ratio but crash after prime 95 working
Should i adjust vcore small step at a time?
    or other setting?  thanks

    Ow hi guys
I just found this while I've been searching and reading up on overclocking and I was wondering if you guys can just help me out? I will continue to read up and learn more, but is it possible to kind of give me a step by step of what to do with this exact board & Bios?
I also have the Z77A-G43 OC & i7-3770k and from the looks of the reading I want to get to 4.4ghz
I've read the posts and see the pics, but where should I start & what exactly should I all change before starting up windows & running prime etc
Any help would be appreciated aimed at a beginner like me would help Overclocking is just something I'm really learning about now.
    TY
Mine is running At 4.3GHz with auto vcore, with Antec water cooler 920 no issue so far..
On reboot, click delete to enter bios then do same setting has me but with Vcore auto, save and reboot, in window under click center , check your clock speed under load, it will give your i7-3770k stable clock zone..
Look in here, the last one  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162043.0
If you don't mind to try overclock genie first in the bios, I sure would like to know if it does anything for you, cause mine it's only capable to OC Genie the GPU only, . I wrote to company about it but no reply yet..
But  it might be a cheap board but you can still overclock it anyway..

  • AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 display driver stopped responding

I have received the following message on my HP Pavilion dv7:
Display driver AMD driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered. It is an AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250.
The screen randomly does this starting a day or so ago. Maybe once every few hours or it may do it once every 5 min three times in a row. The screen has random little blue dots here and there.
What do I need to do? Is this something I could potentially fix/replace/etc?

Is this they way you did a factory reset tomu96?  Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7)
If so, that should have resolved the issue, but since it continues to crash if you made no changes after that restore, you probably have hardware failure.
