Powerbook 15" 1.5ghz screen going bad

I have the same problem as posted in this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=763497&tstart=90
and this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=809791&tstart=15
I would post this as a reply to one of those threads, but it's interesting that both are now locked.
I've read that alot of people are experiencing this problem, but I have yet to see one official solution that doesn't involve jury rigging my Powerbook.
I have the same information in my Color LCD profile as everyone else:
Manufacturer: 00000610
Model: 00009C20
Serial Number: 00000000
Manufacture Date: B87B9680
I love my powerbook, and i'm definately going to be buying a new macbook pro when the next product line starts, but I need to ensure that the screen on my powerbook will last until then. As a student, I have limited funds and rely on my powerbook for everything.
This question is for Apple. What is wrong with my screen, and how can I get it fixed? Surely you've seen enough cases of this by now that you've been able to effectively diagnose the problem. Is it simply a bad connection somewhere inside?
Thanks for your help!

I haven't figured out what the exact problem is, however I have figured out a remedy that has fixed my problem and hopefully will fix others. I've read other solutions about people using pins and clips to apply pressure to the screen, but aesthetically that doesn't work for me.
this is what my screen looked like before:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c16/n0otro/monitor.jpg
Here is how I fixed it:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c16/n0otro/Picture1-1.png
A) A small piece of thin cardboard is ripped
B) The cardboard is inserted between the screen and the bezel
C) What the monitor looks like afterwards. You can barely see the edge of the piece of cardboard under the bezel. If you push it far enough under, you can't see it at all.
Before the fix I had to constantly reposition my monitor so that I could get full view of my screen. I could also put light pressure on the left side of my monitor to alleviate the symptom, but the pressure had to be constantly applied.
This isn't the most elegant solution, but it didn't cost me anything and it's corrected my problem 100%.
The only reason it works is because the cardboard applies a constant pressure to the screen by being wedged between the bezel and screen. You may have to use a thicker piece of cardboard to apply more pressure depending on the degree of the problem with your monitor.
Let me know if anyone else tries this and it works!

  • Screen going bad. Colors are streaked and messed up

Bad screen. Original iPad. Colors on screen are full of lines as if the color projection has gone bad.

Have you tried resetting your iDevice?
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • Screen Going Bad

Yesterday a 1" wide, vertical, white bar appeared on my screen. There's nothing that apple can do since I'm out of warranty and the serial # isn't in the range for this kind of problem.
What I've noticed is that the bar is not always there. When coming out of sleep or just starting up the screen looks normal until an application opens up or the mouse moves then the bar appears. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Ok, for now my screen looks completely normal. The white bar is gone. Anyone have an explanation for this?

  • IPhone touch screen going bad.

I noticed this last week my touch screen not working in certain areas of my screen the upper part. What should I do send in for repair or buy new 3G. I'm curious how much a repair will be

I would suggest you take it in to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them test it.
    Hope this helps

After a few minutes goes black again. Is logic board going bad or graphic card issue? Trying to decide if computer is worth repairing as it was made in 2007.

It does sound like you might have a faulty video connection. See if you can make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store.

  • 1.5 G4 powerbook left hinge going bad

I'm thinking about buying a G4 powerbook with a 15" screen but the left hinge is starting to go bad. You have to push the back left corner of the screen while closing in order to get it to latch.
I can see the hinge body starting to bend while moving the screen forwards or backwards. This is the only thing wrong with it.
Does anyone know how hard the screen is to replace and what it would cost to replace the screen and hinge? I was also thinking I would just use it until it gives out all the way. Could this cause worse damage or make it unrepairable.
    Thank You for any help
    Marco

These hinges can cost close to $300 to replace. Some of these places may charge less than others:

  • PowerBook G4 1.5GHz randomly falling asleep

Hello all.. In just the last 10 minutes, my PowerBook G4 1.5GHz has fallen asleep three times without warning, twice while watching videos on YouTube and once while navigating my way here. The computer was plugged in and receiving power. The first two times it "awoke" quickly with a press of the spacebar. The third time, it did not respond to the spacebar for 15-20 seconds.
This has never happened, and a a perusal of the active topics failed to find similar problems--wondering if anyone might know what's going on...

Here's a follow-up to my posting about my narcoleptic PowerBook G4. Got my PowerBook G4 back today (9/10), by 9:30am... I dropped it off at the local Genius Bar on 9/6 in the afternoon. Pretty snappy turn-around!
    Parts listed as replaced:
    658-0267 KEYBOARD,BACKLIT,PWRBK
    620-3349 TOP CASE MOD ASSY,Q16B
No mention of replacing the main logic board (which the Genius had thought was the culprit of my random sleep woes). So far, in about two hours of use, no sleep problems.
Moreover, they really overhauled the rest of the machine. Here's a list of replaced/repaired items (none of which I had requested):
    • Replaced the feet on the bottom (two had broken off)
    • Replaced the rubber pads around the top latch on the screen (both had long since popped off)
    • Replaced the PC card eject button (this broke off some time ago)
    • Extensive cleaning of the PowerBook. Not that I had let it get too grimy, but the outer case definitely the regular scratches of use. Many of the scratches are no longer visible, and the few that are left are much less noticeable than before. The screen is outstandingly clean.
    • The casing around the keyboard had long since had peeling paint, and since they replaced the TOP CASE MOD ASSY, all of this is new and perfect. In addition, this fixed the rather crunchy trackpad button the unit had shipped with initially (that I did not feel was bad enough to have repaired)
    • The replaced backlit keyboard is of much higher quality than the original keyboard—especially in terms of the backlighting. It is much, much brighter than before. Perhaps even too bright! The key response is also much better, in particular the space bar (pressing the left side of the original spacebar would often not register, this is no longer an issue
    • The unit was fully charged out of the box.
    Cost of repair: $310
I am thoroughly impressed with the care and attention to detail Apple gave this computer. With these repairs, I fully believe I will be happy with this notebook for many, many more years. I don't want to buy a new Mac until it ships with Mac OS X 10.6 (Ocelot or Lion or whatever they choose to call it).
There's a reason I choose to continue giving Apple, Inc. my business.

  • HELP!! powerbook stuck on grey screen, not able to boot safe or single user

hey, i need some help, ive searched the forums the best i could, im experianced at fixing pc's but this has been my first mac in awhile, a friend of mine brought his 12" powerbook g4 to me, he says whenever he turns is on its stays stuck on the first screen where you see a grey apple and it shows a spinning wheel loading, he said hes even left it on overnight and it still stays there, he said he might have gotten a virus, cause he said he was searching **** last time it worked =P (hey i dont judge, every man has to find someway to reveive the "pressure")
so anyway, i dont have alot of his specs, not even the exact o/s # i just know he told me it osx 10.4, so i did some research and found some ways to TRY and fix it, i tried safe mode (shift) and single user mode (cmd+s) and even verbose mode(cmd+v) when booting up the powerbook, but alas, none have worked, safe mode doesnt do anything, just the same grey screen, and single and verbose mode both halts after the cmd screen goes through a few lines.
he doesnt have any software for his powerbook, they are all at home, which is about 900 kms away (or 559.26 miles to the non-metric ppl out there) so im working with nothing but my brain and the net, which isnt much, does anybody have any suggestions, maybe some third party software that would help, just point me in the right direction, or better yet, explain it to me like i was an infant, im not used to macs, but they intrigue. at least for now, i dont want to be put off just from this one little incident.
thanks to anyone who offers help, its my first time EVER asking for it in any forum.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There's a couple of things I can think of that may be the problem. Based upon what you have described, the first is a hard drive failure.
A couple of ways to check for this is to use the PowerBook's original installer disc (which you don't currently have access to), or perhaps a Mac OS X Tiger installation disc, to restart from and then use Disk Utility to perform a Repair Disk. Restarting from CD or DVD is performed by pressing the 'C' key during startup with the disc in the PB.
Another way to check is to see if the drive can be accessed via FireWire Target Disk Mode.
A second possibility is that there may be a directory corruption on the drive. If so, then DiskWarrior is the best option.
Another possibility is to take the PB in to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider for them to diagnose.

  • Screen Goes Blank, Hard Drive Stuck, Cannot Re-Install, or recover

I have somewhat a bizzar problem that even with several years of IT experience I seam not to be able to figure it out. I thought I toss it our here at Toshiba community in hopes of people's collective experience shedding some lights on my problem.
I hava a 3 year old Toshiba Sattellite A305D with updated BIOS to version 2.10. It came with Windows Vista Home 32bit and I had upgraded it to Windows 7 64-bit last Christmas. It was working fine till last month that I started getting sporadic blank screens. Here is the symptome with details: screen goes blank, backlight it on, but there is no content on screen. At this time the Hard Disk Drive activity light is steady lit. Initially the problem happened intermitently and sometimes it fixed itself after few minutes and screen would come back on, but when it started to happen more often, I started to look for some troubleshooting. Some people suggested that blank screen could be due to bad lid close button being stuck or Windows power management's CPU power being set to 5%. I have tried cleaning the lid button and fixing power management but no luck. Then, I tried re-installing Windows from DVD, screen never went blank till after the first few steps of setup to the point that it says "Extracting Windows Files". At this time I started to think this is a hardware issue. I took out the RAM, I installed it on my MacBook Pro and used it for few days, and I had no problem. I even diagnosed them with Windows Memory Checker in the list of Recovery Options and no problem was detected. So, the next suspecious thing was the video card or display inverter. I tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor to test the screen's inverter, and same thing happened and external monitor went blank. I used Windows Recovery options and left it on that screen over night and nothing happened so I concluded the video card is fine. Next, I had turned off the Wifi and Lan, but nothing seamed to change, so I concluded those are OK as well. My last coclusion was that the hard drive is bad. I took the drive out and coonected it to my Desktop PC and ran disk utiility scan to check for bad sectors and none was detected. So, I thought the drive might be totally broken. I went to local electronics store and bought a brand new HITACHI SATA II drive and installed it. At first same thing happened so I gave up. Since I didn't have the recovery disks, I ordered recovery disks from Toshiba and tried that. Save thing happend and as soon as it started copying files, it blanked out. OK. So this time I ran a different recovery option and formatted the entire hard disk and zeroed out all sectors. That took approximately 3 days to finish for a 500GB brand new hard drive. Seams a long time. After that I could install Windows 7 64-bit from scratch up to the end. However, things got gorry again when I started installing Updates and driver packages. I had read about some problems with ATI drivers and Catalyst software with .NET updates, so I did not install any driver from update site and made sure all .NET updates are installed. I had to install the updates slowly chosing a few at a time. Otherwise same thing would happen. I got stuck to the point that I could not update anything. Windows files seamed to be corrupt and turning on/off Windows Features in controll panel was blank, so I had to re-install again. I did Re-install successfully using the upgrade option. This time I installed .NET updates first before any other updates. Then I started downloading all Toshiba drivers. Aazingly, the laptop worked for few ours without the symptom. I managed to install most of the drivers and updates including Value Added Package, HDD/DVD Rom Patch, Registry Patch, Sound, Modem, Atheros Wireless, and Catalyst. Up till now things were ok. Then I ran Toshiba Hardware update patch, and things got really messed up. Windows never booted again and symptoms showed right after boot tried to load WIndows. I tried recovery options but System restore kept getting errors too and I could not restore any more. Since Windows 7 Install and Windows Vistal recovery to Factory Default from recovery disk did not work, I thought maybe I should try Windows XP. So, I got a hold of my old Windows XP CD-ROM and I took a stab at it. Everything went fine till it started to copy windows files. This time symptom was different. I got one of those XP Blue Screen of deaths saying Hard Drive is bad and I must run chdsk /F. So, I concluded HDD is the problem. Ran CHDSK and no problem. I formated the drive again using DISKPART and the problem still exists. This is a brand new hard drive. What is the problem?

Please include your full model number when posting problems on the forums. It can be found on the bottom of your laptop. "A305D" is only partial.
That's quite the problem. How often was it doing this? At some steps in your diagnosing, it seemed to get better, but I wonder if it was actually (temporarily) fixed, or if it didn't occur by chance.
Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. Normally I'd suggest you get it serviced, but then you'd also be throwing more money at a three year old notebook when clearly you're knowledgeable yourself.
Hopefully someone in the community will have some suggestions. I have noticed that some people shy away from posts with large paragraphs of text. (I'm not saying that's correct, but it happens.) I'd suggest putting some bullet points at the top summarizing. If you feel like doing that, you can edit your message.
    Good luck!

  • MBP screen goes dark - only when plugged in

Hi, my four year old MBP 15" hasn't given me any trouble until now.
Recently I have only been able to use the mac on battery power as the screen goes almost completely dark once I plug it in. I have changed the settings in system preferences within power and displays, however this hasn't solved the problem.
Prior to taking it to a repair shop, do you have any suggestions what is triggering the light to go dark ? Thanks in advance.

Hi f, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like it could be a bad inverter board, but I don't know if that would cause it to happen only while using the power adapter. Depending on your exact model, it could be:

  • Satellite 1800 screen goes extremly dark

Help this is my second Toshiba with this problem the screen goes extremly dark and after adjusting a few times it sometimes gets normal.

Maybe the Inverter in the Screen area has a bad connection? Or perhaps the FL Tube is failing.
Sometimes re-connecting the Inverter connections can clean (deoxidize) the pins and get it working again.
But you shouldn't do it yourself if you don't know what you are doing, the Inverter is high voltage!

  • IMessage in Mavericks - the screen goes black

the screen goes black if I am not using it. Messages works fine, but it's annoying to have to click on the window to get the screen from black to text

    Hi,
Use CMD+Shift+ 4 anf the scribe round the window (with some other space around it) and then use the camera icon in a Post to navigate to it (the Screen grab should be on your Desktop) and post a pic here please.

  • Macbook screen goes blank depending on its angle?

My macbooks screen goes blank unless it is at a specific angle, is this a cable problem and how much to get repaired?

While it's impossible to diagnose a hardware problem online it is more than likely a bad inverter cable. Go to www.ifixit.com and look up the repair tutorial to see if you'd rather do it yourself.

  • Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice. Getting a reconditioned 2005 eMac. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned one without problems??? Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily

Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice.  Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily. From what I understand, this is due to bad capicators????? Found a reconditioned 2005 eMac on line. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned eMac without problems???...with regards to software applications. Old eMac is running 10.4.11 and reconditioned on runs 10.5. Suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Might want to make sure both units are not affected. This is the range of serial number from the now-defunct Apple Repair Extention Program for USB 2.0 eMacs:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
A "collapse" is more indicative of a video cabling issue, but the bad caps produced such a wide range of problems that it's hard to sort through them.
If the old eMac is a USB 2.0, which a 2004 unit should be, the HD should exchange with the new one. As the last of the eMacs shipped with Tiger, the new computer should have no probelms with a 10.4 boot volume on the old drive. You can upgrade to Leopard one you have hte new disk in place.
NOTE: Takeapart and reassembly on the USB 2.0 must be done "just so" or you can permanently damage the power switch. Instructions for the USB 1.1 takeapart are slightly different , and the power swtich damage is usually caused by people using the older instructions on a newer eMac.
If you are not up to the takepart nor can you find a local computer tech who knows these. consider taking the drive out of the dead computer(won't make much difference if you damage that one as it's dead), buy an external Firewire enclosure, and put the old drive on it and use it to move data to the new computer. Then you can leave the external attached as a backup drive.
Is the new one a 1.42Ghz model? They have been practically trouble-free around here. We have one and it's been rock solid since we bought it as a refurb in Jan 2006. The 1.42G has the advantage of a Core Image-enabled video chipset, the ATI 9600.
And all USB 2.0 eMacs can, with modern memory modules, support up to 2G of RAM.
