  • Powerbook monitor died...how do i recover files?

I have a powerbook titanium and the monitor has died. It would cost like 400$ to replace the monitor so i bought a new macbook. how would i go about getting my data in the harddrive out? I was thinking two solutions
    1) remove hardrdive put it in a ide 2.5 inch enclosure connect it to a laptop?
    2) plug it into a external monitor hit the hot key to switch to external monitor and retrive data from there
which would work best? i am new to mac.s also can i buy a used powerbook off ebay that has a working lcd and replace it myself ?
    Thanks

    Hi kkokko,
I don't run Tiger, but thought I'd heard it had a migration assistant which automatically ran when you first start up the new PB to transfer data from earlier Mac to newer Mac? Need a FW cable, but not sure if you need to connect it first or it'll ask you to do it when you set up the new MB.
Last FW cable I bought was about $12; if you google for it, you should find one for well under $20 US.

  • My Powerbook G4 died of logic board failure can you help or advise me ?

On Christmas eve I was working on my 2 year old 12" Powerbook G4, I got a notification that the battery was low so I thought lets save my work and drain the battery. It was a good idea at the time because I've heard its sometimes good practice to completely drain the battery and give it a fresh charge ? so the machine finally quit and before going to bed I plugged it into the mains to charge, immediately I noticed the power cord connection to my mac turned green and not the amber I expected. This powerbook has travelled the world with me over the past 2 years so its been a little buddy and I was alarmed to see this happen ? I waited 20 minutes guessing that there would be sufficient charge to wake the machine. After hitting the power button there was nothing !!! no click, chime or indication that he machine was in any way operational.
I tried cleaning the battery and touch points in the machine, I even tried my spare battery in the machine and everything I could to wake the machine. Nothing worked. I was pretty annoyed to be honest, its in perfect condition, no dents scrapes and it was always maintained and well ventilated etc.
On December 27th I flew to Irelands official Mac repair centre here in Galway as I needed it fixed ASAP and I was very concerned about loosing all my work and the physical machine itself. Five days later I called to see if there was a update, the representative explained to me that it was the logic board in my machine and that it was damaged and I would require a new logic board if the machine was to ever successfully boot again. The bill in total would be €670 inc. parts and labour and unfortunately Apple will only guarantee the new logic board for 3 months and after that I'm on my own. Sadly when I bought my machine (in Australia)I didn't take out the extended cover on the machine because it seemed quite expensive at the time and I knew I'd take good care to maintain and upgrade the machine as necessary.
The update I received from the official Apple repair centre was that there was no evidence of any water damage, dust or physical damage and there was no clear explanation as to why the part "just gave up"! The representative was very helpful and removed the hard drive for me, placed it in a external (USB)enclosure and sent it back to me so I did manage to save my work but still Imp very disappointed with Apple that I only got 2 years out of a machine that's become a daily tool to me.
I wanted to post and see what other people have done in this instance, luckily I'm fortunate enough to be able to purchase a new Macbook 2.0ghz to replace my machine but that's now costing me €1519 just because the Apple hardware was well quite frankly crap ! What I would like to know is - does this happen often, is there recourse to go back to Apple and is there a cheaper way to fix my poor Powerbook http://www.flickr.com/photos/bfitzsimons/215516415/ ?
Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

    Hi Brian.
In the UK we have some degree of consumer protection (Sale of Goods Act) for situations not too far from yours. Basically we, as consumers, have a right to expect goods that we purchase to be of a certain standard of quality/reliability. The SOGA provides up to six years of protection, unlike the standard one year warranty many manufacturers offer - which, to some degree, renders extended warranties unecessary.
However each case is different, and consumers will get different mileage depending on their individual circumstances but it is not uncommon for consumers to have successfully obtained repairs, replacements, or refunds using the SOGA - although they will have had to be prepared to argue their case.
Perhaps you might want to check out what kind of consumer protection the Republic of Ireland offers. At the very least, there is probably an EU equivalent of the SOGA which will cover the ROI as well.
NB: I've just re-read your post and realised that you bought the PowerBook in Australia - which probably disqualifies you from any EU or ROI consumer protection. That said, it may still be worth your while to find out what kind of consumer protection is available to you for future reference.

  • My Powerbook is dying!

I have been getting messages that my start up disk is full for the past few weeks. I have cleared up some files and I now have 3 GB space available. However, my computer started to act so weird today (eg. when I click on an icon it goes to a different window, etc). So I restarted my computer. I ended up gettng a blue earth-like icon in the middle of a gray page, which I have never seen before. What does that mean? Then I pressed the power button (about 3x) and finally got my computer booted up. Now, I'm frantically saving all my photos/personal files just in case my computer crashes again.
How can I prevent this from happening again? Do I need an external HD to free up space? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, c3lisus. 3GB of free space on your hard drive really isn't enough, and that may be the cause of your troubles. If you can't keep aminimum of 5GB available on it — and more than that is better, if the drive is bigger than 50-60GB in total capacity — then you really need a larger internal hard drive, as well as an external drive to back it up to. If you now have only your overfull internal drive, just getting an external drive to move some data onto will enabvle you to free up some space on the internal drive, but it will leave you with not one but two drives that aren't backed up.
Once you have more free space on your internal drive, boot to your latest OS installer CD or DVD and choose Disk Utility fromm the Installer menu. Select your hard drive in the left pane of DU and click the "Repair Disk" button. This will repair directory damage that may have occurred because of inadequate free space on your drive.

  • Battery on New Powerbook Suddenly Dying in Minutes?

My new PowerBook has had excellent battery performance during the two months I've owned it. But suddenly today it's started dropping down to 0% power and shutting off within minutes of powering up. Last night I watched a DVD until the battery ran down (which I've done before), then let it charge overnight.
It's fine when it's plugged in to AC, but the charge drops down from 100% to 0% within minutes when running on battery. It 'recharges' up to 100% within the same amount of time.
It's also giving the warning about running on reserve power at the 97% level as it's on its way down to zero.
Any advice or similar sudden battery problems on a new PowerBook?

    Edmund,
We were both participating on some threads re: "battery problems" a couple of weeks back, and then I dropped off - because the new battery Apple sent fixed everything and I haven't had a problem since. I just thought I'd pop back in so folks know that, for me anyway, the new battery fixed everything (to this point). And that means everything, inclusing some erratic behaviour that we were afraid were due to larger issues than the battery (the connector, etc.)
So, for everyone else, if you're having problems with your battery and power supply on your new hi-res PBook (and you have one of the bad batts), call Apple and have them send you a replacement. It's quick, easy, and it solved my issues. As Edmund say, check out the other threads...FYI everyone -- and good luck,

  • PowerBook has died

    I hope you can help
My powerbook has suddenly stopped working. When I try to start up the PB it seems to try to boot from the cd (which is blank). I have managed to remove the cd, but when I then try to boot it seems to try for a couple of seconds or so then stops, nothing ever comes up on the screen. I have tried to insert the cd that came with the PB and hold c whilst starting up but to no avail. Any ideas on how i can get it to boot up.
    Thanks
    David

    David:
Leopard? I did not think that OS was going to be released until next Spring. You must mean Tiger, I think.
You said you can't get it to boot from the disk that came with the computer. What disk is that? Is it an OS install disk?
You should have an Apple Hardware Test disk. Did you try booting from it?
Is there an internal HDD installed? Does it have System software installed?
Try this: with the computer shut down locate the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Now hit the power button and immediately hold down Command + Option + P + R. Hold for three chimes the release and see if the computer boots.
Another line of approach is to hold down the Option key and hit the power key.
A third option is to hit the power key than immediately hold down the shift key until the gray apple appears.
Post back and let me know if any of these get any response. Please respond to the questions I asked at the beginning, too.
    Good luck.

  • Did my powerbook finally die? :(

I've had my powerbook for about 4 years now. It's been great, got me through college, etc, but recently has had a few problems. The computer was running slow about 6 months ago so I took it to my friends over at the Genius Bar only to have them tell me my hard drive is having problems, but it shouldn't cause any major problems other than a slow down. I continued to use it despite not getting the hard drive replaced (they wanted $500 to replace the hard drive despite the computer not being worth much more than that). Everything worked fine until last night when I came home from work to find a "Please restart your machine. Hold the power button for 3 seconds to do this" or something like that. The screen was a little weird looking with large pixelation and weird vertical lines. I restarted only to have it start to boot up with the apple logo and the spinning circle thingy. The screen was still messed up and it never made it to my home screen. I tried restarting again and again to no avail.
Does anyone know what's wrong with my powerbook? I don't want to have to buy a new one with the next generation powerbooks coming out in 6-8 weeks...
Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

    Dave:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
What you experienced last night sounds like a kernel panic. These can be either hardware or software based. In your case, since you have previously experienced hardware issues, that would be the first place I would look.
Boot from the Apple Hardware Test that came with your computer and run all tests in a loop by holding down Command + L during the tests. Sometimes it takes several hours to detect intermittent problems, so be patient. Then please post back with what you find out.
    Good luck.

  • My Powerbook just DIED......

I noticed that my computer was running slower than normal yesterday, so I decided to reboot. On reboot, I noticed the "starting Mac OS" screen was taking longer than normal and then saw that it never completed. I turned it off and on again and got the same thing. I got out my Tech Tool CD and couldn't get that to work. Called Apple Care and they had me get out my softwared install DVD/CD. Tried to use the installer and there was no desitination to be found, i.e., my harddrive didnt show up. Is it over? Time to get a new computer? I am taking it to the Genius Bar today if I can get in.

Worst case scenario is hard drive failure. Buying a new computer is an extreme solution when a replacement HD will do. But before you do that, DiskWarrior may be what you need.

  • My PowerBook 17"/1.67Ghz died ...

    Hello everyone,
I have purchased a new PowerBook 17"/1,67Ghz on March 2005
at an Apple Retail Store here in Germany (www.cyberport.de).
My PowerBook just died two weeks ago after I have made a clean installation of MacOS X 10.4.3. (MacOS X 10.4 installation from the DVD + Combo Updater 10.4.3). After a restart my PowerBook just died completely.
    - Entire black screen
    - No reactions at all on keyboard strokes and trackpad input
    - The battery did no longer charge at all. Only the first
LED did blink on the battery. (Low battery). Strange even though the power adapter was pluged-in for the entire day.
    - The PowerBook did not start at all without the power adapter.
    - When I tried to restart my PowerBook with the power adapter pluged-in, the internal fans started to blow at full speed.
    - No startup sound, only a black screen and the blowing fans running at max. speed
    - No possibility to reset the PRAM
    - No possibility to restart from a CD
    - No power-adapter, no reactions at all
    - I have noticed that my PowerBook was quite hot after I have noticed the black screen after a self-restart.
I have called the technical support at my Apple Retail Store here in Germany (www.cyberport.de). The technical support team told me that the logic-board might me damaged.
Since my one-year-garanty is still valid, I have sent my
damaged Apple !7" PowerBook back to my Apple Retail Store (www.cyberport.de).
This is two weeks ago now. I called the Apple Retail Store today. They informed me that they are still waiting for the main logic board from Apple. Last week, however, they told me that the logic board should arrive on Thuesday last week.
So, I assume this hardware failure is going to cost me another precious week.
I am wondering. Has anyone else made similar bad experiences with an Apple 17" PowerBook 1.6Ghz?
Another question I have. During the last months I have noticed a really high and annoying sizzle tone each time I have installed software on my PowerBook or copied some files over the internal LAN. Has anyone else here on this discussion board noticed similar negative side effects?
    graphically & sincerely,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Logic board issues are not frequent, but they do happen. Somethings you can do to prevent them I've listed on this User Tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=607445
While it was written to address iBooks, many of the items apply to Powerbooks too. In addition many people find Powerbooks don't get their fans going off as frequently, if they let air circulate underneath. A clean dry metal cookie tray is a good way to do this. There are also many accessories you can buy to either cool by fan ventilation or just simple raising the computer on a podium. I had an iCurve though, and its rubber pads wore away. So I'd get something else if you decide to get something.

  • PowerBook G4 12" Hard Drive upgrade not detected

    Hi,
The original 80GB drive in my 12" PowerBook just died. I had been planning to upgrade anyway so I went out and bought a 320GB WD Scorpio Blue PATA drive. I followed the instructions on iFixIt to change the drive and reassembled the PowerBook. I checked all connectors and I can hear the drive spin up when I turn on the laptop. However, the Leopard install DVD does not detect the new drive. It doesn't show in System Profiler or in Disk Utility. I have verified that the drive works by connecting it via a USB enclosure to my iMac. Am I missing something? Is the 320GB drive compatible with my PB?
    Thanks

Given that the HD works fine in an external enclosure but isn't detected at all when mounted internally, I surmise that either (a) you failed to get its flex cable firmly reconnected to the logic board, or to the drive itself, when reassembling it, or (b) you damaged the flex cable itself. Press the connectors very firmly into place, especially the logic board connector, then test again. If that doesn't help, you may want to order a replacement cable and see whether that solves the problem.

  • From sleeping now crashing -powerbook G4

    Hi,
I posted a few days ago about my sleeping/narcoleptic Powerbook G4- started when I was working on many spreadsheets. Now that I've installed the Caffeine app, which doesn't allow my laptop to sleep, it has suddenly crashed and shut down completely- this was when I was watching a video and opening up iphoto at the same time. For the past few days, I have made it a habit to always shut down my computer if I'm away for more than 10 minutes.
Was this caused by the new app or is my Powerbook really dying? Need new hardware? Or is it time to go to the Apple store to get it professionally fixed?
I have now transferred some files and I have 10gb free space. Any advice?

Will the system start up or is it dead? If it will start up, see the steps below. If it's dead, that is when you push the power button nothing happens, see this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If you have any external devices connected, disconnect them. If you haven't already reset the PMU, do that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 and if you haven't reset the PRAM do that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Run the Apple hardware test to see if there is an obvious hardware problem. Find the original OS X disks that came with your system, insert the one that says in small print on the label "AHT Version x.x", and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. If you have either of the TechTool programs, they do similar testing. Does that show any issues?
While you have your OS X disks out, insert the first one, and reboot holding the C key down. When the menu bar appears, choose the Disk Utility from the utilities menu and repair permissions and repair the internal hard drive. Any messages or did the repair complete normally?
Post back the results and we'll go from there.

  • Using a removed G4 Powerbook hard drive with an MBA.

    Hi
When my G4 Powerbook finally died I removed (carefully) the hard drive and fitted it into a caddy. Plugging the caddy's USB lead into my new MBA however does not produce any result. Any tips on how I retrieve the files from the old hard drive? Thanks

    Thank you both.
I am aware of the radical difference in processors and was never intending to try to boot the Air from the G4 drive, only to recover the files - mainly .doc and Appleworks files with a few photos, tunes and one or two video clips.  (Yes, I know I should have backed them up more regularly!)
When I plug the caddy's lead into the Air a red LED on the caddy comes on. Nothing appears on the desktop - I've never been entirely clear what it means to speak of a drrive "mounting". My G4 always had a " Macintosh HD" icon on the desktop, but I've chosen not to have that dispalyed on the MBA.
Disk Utility seems to show two drives but I think they're actually the same - at least in the primitive sense in whiish I use the phrase "hard drive". The top line of the side bar in Disk Utility shows a drive icon and next to it says "121.33 GB Apple SSD" Assuming that SSD means Solid State drive and given the size this must be the Air's own internal drive. (confirmed by the mention of GUID partition table in the description to the lower right of the Disk Utility window. On the line below, but indented as if subsumed under the top line, the same icon appears agian with "Macintosh HD" next to it. However, highlighting that brings up the information that this has a Capacity of 120.47 GB. Since my G4 had a 60GB hard disk I think this second line must also be refering to the internal drive in the MBA.
I know, of course, that the G4's drive may be extinct, though when the Powerbook was trying to start the drive would at least spin!
I'll appreciate any other suggestions you could come up with and in the meantime get back to the retailer I bought the caddy from to see if they can answer the questions canadacam39 raises.
    Thanks again

  • Buying Titanium Powerbook G4. Any ways to extend life?

I'm buying a Powerbook G4 Titanium. I've heard that they had some design issues.
The one that I saw on eBay had two black spots, but those I think can be cleaned. I've heard that the Powerbook also had Key lines on the Screen.
I don't want the Powerbook to Die. I want to extend it's life. But I need some Suggestions.
    Thanks.
    - ClarisWorks

You will have to identify the model more precisely for constructive comment because there were so many PowerBook G4 models, including the first PowerBook G4 (titanium) that are essentially obsolete, several can run an OSX as new as Tiger 10.4.11 due to processor and other hardware constraints.
Buying one from ebay is kind of a gamble on a good day.
Dark spots on the screen? Rub marks or dead pixels?
Parts? powerbookmedic, wegenermedia, ifixit, OWC, & others.
Some of these also list repaired computers in their inventory.
You could view comparative information http://everymac.com on
all the different PowerBook G4 models and they also have a best
guess at the highest retail value based on function and condition.
A good source of offline information is the download database
from http://mactracker.ca (w/ versions for older systems, too)
The most RAM any of these could use, and basic specs, can
be found at everymac and also mactracker.ca
I was given what appears to be an aluminum PowerBook G4 12"
that needs significant work; the DC-in board, a hard disk drive,
perhaps a logic board solder; it also has a few dents. After a time
I was able to get it charged by finding where the power adapter
seemed to actually charge, then I taped the wire in that position.
But later on startup, I found the display worked but that was it.
Things made noise inside. I don't remember if I tried FW TDM
to attempt to see about the hard disk drive, from another Mac.
So anyway, you can get a repaired PowerBook G4 with a limited
guarantee of a sort from companies who repair Apple portables.
And they most assuredly are a better-bet on function than ebay.
At least they'd start out on their second life on four tiny feet.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • PowerBook help desperatly needed

my 15" 1.67 PowerBook is dying. I had been experiencing regular grey screen crashes when starting programs so I rang apple care who suggested rebooting with install disk and repairing the hdd using disk utilty, this didn't work so I backed up to my external drive and booted again with the install disk and proceeded to erase and install new os. This failed on several attempts and now I'm left with an erased drive with no os installed and a install disk stuck in the drive. Please can anyone suggest a solution to this....

Hi, David. *Exactly how* did the attempted OS installations fail? Were there any error messages, and if so, what did they say? If not, what were the other symptoms? Are you still able to start up from the installer disc that's stuck in the optical drive? Is it a retail Tiger installer, or the one that came with your Powerbook when it was new, or a disk that came with another Mac?
You can eject it by starting the computer up from a cold shutdown while holding the trackpad button down, until the disc pops out of the drive.

  • How restore aol sent mac mail from time machine?

I am using mac mail and an imap connection to aol.  I also have a time capsule and use time machine for backing up. Yesterday I stopped receiving incoming mail in mac mail and tried deleting the aol account in mac mail and then setting it up fresh.  I was shocked to find that my 25,000 AOL sent emails did not restore! I was told by an apple genius bar rep several months ago that once mail was on my machine that the emails would NEVER be lost.  Apparently this is not true.  When I open mac mail and go into my time capsule using time machine, however, do not see the SENT mail icon under AOL--it goes away?  When I try to restore the aol mail from the day before the incident the only thing that comes up is the one Sent Mail mssg that I sent AFTER the deleting and restoring of my AOL account in mac mail. The only relevant post I have found is the one below which was posted in 2008.  Please let me know there is a way to get back my sent messages.  I can't get them directly from the aol server because the server does not save messages that are sent from any client but AOL. Thanks.

Restoring Apple Mail and Your Emails from Time Machine
filed under: How-To tags: mail, timemachine Tuesday, January 29, 2008, 11:31 am
UPDATE (25 August 2010): Please note that this post is well over 2 years old and as Tim pointed out in the comments below, this method may not be the best solution for restoring emails. According to his restore efforts, changes where made to the timestamp from the date in which they were received to the date in which they were restored. I have not tested this myself.
The hard drive on my PowerBook completely died the other day, but I luckily had been running Time Machine backups since upgrading to Leopard. (I wasn’t all that ****** off seeing as I was eager for an excuse to replace my wimpy 40Gb hard drive with a new 160Gb drive). I fumbled a bit, looking for a specific Apple Mail restore tool. I knew where all my emails lived, but I thought that Apple would have a specific means for restoring apps like Mail. So I created this mini-tutorial on how to restore Apple Mail from Time Machine simply because I could not find this method elsewhere.
Supposedly, If you attach your Time Machine backup drive, open Apple Mail then launch the Time Machine application, you are presented with historical views of Apple Mail. This did not work for me, the historical views were just blank, so the steps below do not take this approach.
Restoring Your Emails from a Time Machine Backup
Warning: If you have already setup Apple Mail with your accounts and preferences, this will negate ALL your doings.
Note: This process will restore all your email accounts, preferences, passwords, smart mailboxes, etc.
    The How-To
Before loading Time Machine, open the Finder and navigate to Home Folder (username) -> Library. In there will be a folder name “Mail”. Rename it to “Mail (default)” (Select the folder then hit the Return key to rename).
Mount your Time Machine Backup Drive (ahem, plug it in).
Control + Click the Time Machine Application and chose “Browse Other Time Machine disks…”. This, of course, brings up the historical view of your backups.
Go back to your most recent backup (2nd window back) and navigate to Home Folder (username) -> Library. Select the “Mail” folder and click the restore button (bottom right).
Once the restore is completed, open Apple Mail and you will be presented with an import wizard (below). Simply follow through the prompts and you will be good to go.
    That’s it!UPDATE (20-January-2009): After step 4., also restore ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plistThanks Jon C.
If you have multiple mail accounts, you should also restore the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file as well. This will ensure all of your account settings are imported. – Jon C.
