PowerMac G5 processors kept very busy with rogue root command, help!
Hi
I have a recurring problem. I had an old version of Virex which never seemed to work much in OSX Tiger, and so I deleted the programme....or so I thought. A month or so ago I noticed that the processors seemed very busy, and so checking the running processes in Activity Monitor I noticed a root programme called VShieldCheck (a part of Virex) was usiung all spare processor capacity. I can force quit the process through Activity Monitor, but it is tiresome doing it every time I start up. I tried logging in as root, successfully, but I've no idea what to do after that!
Any ideas how to dispense with the annoying VShieldCheck. And any recommendations for a replacement ante- virus programme?
Cheers
Wait a minute. Just found a great thread which recommended finding the library startup items. Sure enough load of virex files that I didn't find before dotted around the place (found via spotlight) and killed them. Hey presto, problem solved. Sorry for wasting anyone's time.

yesterday I bought 65$ worth of iTunes music using a iTunes gift card. Then I got these emails saying I am being billed again????? What do I do???? I'm very frustrated with this. Please help me
What e-mail are you talking about?
What exactly did it say?
Are you sure that the e-mail was not your receipt? -
I'm starting to get very frustrated with the lack of help on this issue!!!
Ok, someone please help!
I have tagged several songs off the radio from my IPod and am trying to purchase them. I have been able to purchase songs on a previous version of ITunes, but not now after upgrading to the latest version. I have tried the following,
Purchasing several songs I tagged at different times and no luck.
I went into the ITunes store and purchased one of my tagged songs from there and it added it to the playlist as a purchased song.
Then I deleted an earlier song and retagged it. It appeared and I immediately tried to purchase it, but no luck! All it does is hang there (I've left it hanging for about 10 minutes) and it won't purchase! I've posted this question like 5 times, could someone respond?Hi,
It sounds like you've accidentally used an undocumented shortcut that changes the flow setting. (The flow setting is used to create a build up effect. This is a Photoshop feature that although Elements does not show it in the options bar can be called up using the shortcut.)
With the brush tool selected, press Shift + 0 (Shift + zero key) to set the flow back to 100%.
There's a video about this on YouTube:

Very confused with trade in, please help!
I ordered a iPhone 6 today through my local Verizon store, I have a iPhone 5 to trade.. The whole process was done very fast so I didnt ask to many questions. I am confused though, am I mailing my phone in once the iPhone 6 gets to my verizon store? Or are they going to give me a $200 dollar credit so I can trade it in right then? I did already get a conformation about my order saying it will ship by 10/31. Please help!! Thanks!!
Well it depends on what posts you read on this subject.
Some customers have stated that if you buy or pick up in store they can look at your device and credit you on the spot.
Others have said that you get a mailer that you send the phone back in which many have claimed the amount promised was reduced to $36 because the iPhone was not deactivated or wiped absolutely clean. See if the store will take it first before you mail it back.
Good Luck -
My macbook pro has a virus/trojan that is resetting the EFI via apci and it is getting root access privileges. It seems to be creating multiple aliases that bundle with rogue apps and preferences so it is very difficult to control or fix. Please help..It all stems from the "about donwloads" PDF which kicks off the restructuring of the OS..
Well given the fact that it is not just myself who is infected and also that this is my 3rd macbook in 1 year because the other 2 efi's were compromised to the point where they were unusable, and also that I must've been to the mac store no less than 100 times in a year for these issues, I beg to differ. Here is what I can show you. This has been ongoing for over a year now.
I will try and show you as much as I can.
1) Here is what I see when I run mount from terminal:
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
localhost:/4zOta2Q9FMiMnRjTROIbhU on /Volumes/MobileBackups (mtmfs, nosuid, read-only, nobrowse)
Why on earth is /Volumes/MobildBackups my localhost is beyond me. I don't use iCloud and Mobile me is obsolete.
2) Here is what I show when I run ls -al /*/*/*/*.efi from root
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 May 1 00:33 /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 Oct 2 2012 /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 115716 Dec 13 14:08 /usr/standalone/i386/tmbootpicker.efi
As far as I know my boot.efi should not change everytime I boot my machine.
3) Here is something very interesting. When I run cd /dev followed by ls -al look what I have;

I have created a JAVA program which has to make a huge amount of operations. As a result, when it's working I can't press any buttom of the frame, even I can't see propely the frame until it has finished working because it is very busy.
What can I do to solve this? Thanks!Quote:
Using Threads to Improve Performance
When properly used, threads can be a powerful tool. However, you must proceed with caution when using threads in a Swing program. Despite the dangers, threads can be invaluable. You can use them to improve your program's perceived performance. And sometimes threads can simplify a program's code or architecture. Here are some typical situations where threads are used:
To move a time-consuming initialization task out of the main thread, so that the GUI comes up faster. Examples of time-consuming tasks include making extensive calculations and blocking for network or disk I/O (loading images, for example).
- To move a time-consuming task out of the event-dispatching thread, so that the GUI remains responsive.
- To perform an operation repeatedly, usually with some predetermined period of time between operations.
- To wait for messages from other programs. -
Tried updating but kept coming up with error as signature is invalid..?? Can anyone help.? I'm not computer savvy so please respond in lamens terms..
ThanksIt is hardly Apple's fault that Epson can't/won't update their driver, but at least Epson suggest that you use the Gutenprint driver, which in any case is far better that what Epson offer.
You can get it here:
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
You can download the latest version from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/
Have you downloaded the recent Apple update to Epson drivers?

I have a site I do business with. They do not authorize passwords unless you are a dealer. I do not have passwords on an auto save function, as I want to type my passwords in each time for security. My password for this site will only work a short WHILE, AND THEN it will not be recognized by the site and I cannot get in.
Then I must contact the company to reset or clear it manually on their end so it can be reset. They always give me the SAME SETUP PASSWORD to use. I use it, then I RESET PASSWORD on my end. The computer seems to remember my user NAME AT least on my computer as it comes up once I start typing the username in. They SAY IT is a settings issue on my end. I do not have this problem on any other site even THOSE WITH higher SECURITY. I need to FIX the issue OR may LOSE ACCESS To the site as is very aggravating for them and they say other have had the problem but usually with chrome but never constantly.I am not that computer literate ,but my husband is an IT Security professor and textbook writer but says doesn't really know Firefox. I do not really want to store passwords on computer as have been hacked several times. He and I do not understand some of the terms mentioned. since it is not a problem with other sites it should be fixable. Please me help using terms I or my husband can understand without having to give Firefox all my passwords. I would be happy to set up something different just for this one site if I need to but need easy instructions. Have cleared the cookies before but it still happens. What setting do I need to change or set to fix this? the other questions that come up seem very different and do not apply. FF 22 now but happened w other FF versions.I'm having a little trouble understanding the part about your password having to be reset. Why is that happening??
Let's start with Firefox's settings:
(1) You can configure the password manager feature on this tab:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Security
There is a checkbox to enable/disable the feature.
There also is a "Saved Passwords" button to review and remove any passwords you do not want Firefox to keep.
That tab also has a feature to set a Master Password so that no one can use your saved passwords without knowing the Master Password. You may need to exit Firefox in order for Firefox to ask for that again.
Related articles:
* [[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]
* [[Use a Master Password to protect stored logins and passwords]]
(2) Site-specific permissions
If you want to use the password manager for other sites but NOT a particular site, you can configure that in the Permissions Manager.
In a new tab, type or paste '''about:permissions''' in the address bar and press Enter.
After the page loads, use the search box in the upper left corner to narrow down the list to the site you want to configure. Highlight the site on the left side, and on the right side, choose Block under Store Passwords.
(3) Form autocomplete suggestions
Separate from passwords, Firefox remembers entries you've made into forms (in most cases) and lists the matching ones below the form field in a drop-down.
To clear a suggestion, press the down arrow key to highlight it and press the Delete key.
To turn off this feature, see this article: [[Control whether Firefox automatically fills in forms with your information]].
To review and selectively edit or delete form history entries, you need an add-on. For example, you could try this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/form-history-control/ -

<WHOA ---- $88 bucks?!?! I can buy a "new" refurbed unit online for cheaper than that...AND I would get a warranty!! Since they said if I needed clarification or assitance, reply, to which I did:
Let me make sure I understand this... I tried updating my player withyourlatest firmware, and it fried my mp3 player, and now I have to pay up to$88 to fix a problem cause by your software? I just want to make sureIunderstand this issue. Thanks
<Now for the kicker!!! Here is what they say:

It is recommended that you download and install the latest driver aswell as the firmware update, and then format your player or reset yourplayer by booting the player into its unique Recovery Mode, if youexperience one or more of the following symptoms:Your player is not detected in Creative MediaSource or Windows MediaPlayerThe battery does not last as expectedYour computer stops responding during file transfersThere is a power outage during file transfersThere is an error about firmware. Keep on holding the Play/Pause button till the Rescue Mode screenappears.6. After the recovery mode has started, release the Play/Pause button.<IT'S THE EXACT SAME EMAIL AS THE FIRST EMAIL THEY SENT BACK!!!!! I responded to that email just a little while ago requesting that a supervisor or manager please contact me... Their support is absolutely HORRENDOUS! I am wondering if these people in "tech support" are technically or are just flowing a flow chart for procedures.
I have been the IT field for 8+ years, I deal with customers on a daily basis. I have never in my life seen this kind of business practice, of A) a company not standing behind their products & work and B) supporting the customers issues after the fact. I understand I am a lowly MP3 owner, but I have always purchased creative products, I've got 2 sound cards running in my pc's here at home. I've purchased speakers, this mp3 player, referred my father in law to purchase a similar mp3 player from creative, bought my brother the same mp3 player. This whole exprience has put a bad taste in my mouth and to see that there are quite a few others are having the same issue makes me sick...
P.S. sorry for being so long winded in this, I know its alot to read, I tried to cut out the non-essential stuff in the emails I posted but I still can't believe my player is junk now after a failed firmware update.harryhibbs wrote:
A quick question: When you try to reset the unit, is it connected to the charger? If yes, OK you say it's dead, so no screen display, BUT, can you hear if the hard dri've is spinning? I think it's very unlikely that a firmware upgrade process would have any chance of physically killing a unit altogether.
Another thing to check - is the battery firmly located in place? You can remove the front cover to access the battery compartment.
Hibbs
Yes - that is correct, I have been trying to reset the unit with it connected to AC power via the charger...No you cannot hear the harddri've spinning. Yes the firmware can kill the unit, not "physically" but it has logically shut down the unit to where it will not power up. The battery is firmly seated...Just as a side note, when I tried the original firmware upgrade the unit was plugged into the charger as well, so I know there were no power outages etc during the attempted upgrade. -

PSE 8.0 is very slow with tags
I used to work with V5.0 and was very happy with that. Then I saw the feature of 8.0 an upgraded to it.
After I had converted my database, the program was so slow. Adding a new tag took about one minute.
Adding this tag to a picture took another minute. Just moving the window with the tags to another place on the screen took more than a minute. The CPU is busy all the time. Now I have removed all unused tags and the system is a little bit faster. Are there any experiences with that. Have other had similar problems. (I have about 80-100 tags in different hierachy and about 10.000 pictures in one catalog) Using names of persons and information about the quality of the pictures will probably slow down the system even more, I guess.
My System is a 3 GHZ CPU with 2GB RAM and 2 GB virt. Mem.
I hope to get some help.
WilliI think, I did turn that off. Just to make sure: Is it turned off in the references?
One of the reasons, I bought it was the face tagging. Is it not usable? -
Muse will not Launch, very frustrated with no actual customer support.
When the icon is double click the splash/home screen opens, covers half my screen and stops, It will stay their until it provides an error then closes, this time it closed without the error.
In task manager one time it said it was running but most often it is not in task manager so not running. I have been advised to download cc cleaner, did and ran every location in my PC. I have been told to clear everything, I did. reloaded Muse and the same problem exists. I have been dealing with this for over a week and very disappointed with Adobe. It is not possible to contact them directly regarding muse however I have a website that I designed on trust that is not useful and I have taken too many hours away from business, let alone the months building a site.
Just received an error that says to report the my last actions to creative team, that would be fine if I could find the creative team.

Thanks for the help community, just voicing my frustrations as I am a small business and my website of all things is causing me to loose money.Hi, Thanks for trying, I am not sure how to install the update when the
muse splash screen opens then freezes. If you want I can completely clean
my comp for the fifth time and reset and try again but all the advise I
have received so far is similar to what I just received. A basic fix but
I am not sure if the how it is ever considered. IE, How to update when
program wont open. I wish someone would take the time to really consider
my situation. It really has been more expensive to use Muse then pay a
designer and now you have me.
Please, as a company that \I trusted and have used for years. Please help
me fix this problem. -
Indesign CS6 very slow with vectors. please Help!
We updated to CS6 from CS5.5 to a Mac Pro running OS 10.6. Processors are 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. Ram is 10 GB 800 MHz DDR2. Video card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 256 MB. One Cinema Display and a smaller Samsung monitor.
The performance of InDesign when handling groups of vector files created inside InDesign is horrible. For example, I took a little 3 x 3px square and created a grid of 60 squares approx. When I select all of them (pure vectors) and try to move them it takes InDesign 10 seconds to respond to the selection first, and then 10 more seconds to move them.
Another example, I created a very simple graph, pure vector of course, with a moderate number of text and lines and when I select the whole thing the lag comes again, takes a lot to mark the selection and then is very hard to move it.
We have tweaked InDesign preferences (Interface, File Handling) as much as we could but the issue remains. We didn't have any problems with 5.5.
Help please!had to install mountain lion and now everything works smoothly

Yes - well you have to make the file in a word processing Application.
You could use TextEdit (it's free) Pages (words only), or Numbers (data base) (they are part of iWorks - and may or may not be free (included) on your machine. You could use MS Office (it is not free) You could use any Open source word processor that plays well with Office (NeoOffice, StarOffice) they are free.
That's how you create content and copy/paste URLS. Then you save the file to the desktop. If you are going to make more than one file... you make a folder on the desktop and save, or drag the file(s) into it.
You attach it to your e-mail client which will compress it and e-mail it. An excellent reference is to use Help, from the menu bar, also from inside any application. From your library or book store the OS X for Dummies has a lot of useful information (you don't read it cover to cover but look up chapters about what you'd like to do)
You can also make appointments at your local Apple store for individualized help (if a store is nearby) -
A couple of days ago I kept losing connectivity with the internet.By resetting either my modem or Airport Extreme I could regain it for 10-30 min. when I would have to repeat the resetting.Since, with Apple & Apple store support & many hours of contact with them the problem keeps recurring
Edge has very clear restrictions, one being that you must have 6 months of clean payment history which you don't. Either wait until April 14, or good luck at Sprint.
I am unsure how it can be determined the payment mix up was the fault of CS, but regardless, the mix up was done. There can be any number of reasons why a payment could be missed without any fault on your part, however you are still the responsible party for the account and must live with the repercussions.
