Check out Note 1079959 - PDS VS PPM differences
<b>Functionalities supported by PDS and not PPM</b>
Engineering change management
Differing from the PPM for SNP, the PDS for SNP is transferred directly from ERP and is not generated from the PP/DS-PDS.
Subcontracting in SNP is fully integrated with ERP
Rapid Planning Matrix supports only PDS and not PPM (in combination with ERP-DIMP).
Class nodes are supported in PDS but not in PPM
Variant tables are supported in PDS and not in PPM
Variant functions are supported in PDS and not in PPM
Model-Mix-Planning (MMP) is supported in PDS and not in PPM.
NET indicator is supported for PDS in 5.0 but not for PPM
<b>Major Limitations of the PDS to the PPM</b>
Product flows are not supported in PDS
Alternative modes for the PDS can either be created using        alternative sequences or resource classification but not both.
Time-dependent parameter (can be transferred to the PDS using a BADI).
Overrule the synchronization setting of the resource on activity level
Cost fields are supported in PPM and not in PDS (however they can be implemented via a BADI).
SNP Bucket consumption fields with PP/DS-order are supported in PPM and not in PDS (however they can be implemented via a BADI)
<b>Differences in Modeling</b>
Phantoms are transferred explicitly (in difference to the PPM where the BOM of the phantom is already exploded on the ERP-side)
If subcontracting in PP/DS is modeled like in ERP (i.e. the production takes place in the plant) it is Sufficient to transfer the BOM to APO . In this case no production version is required on ERP-side.
This is however not supported by SNP.
For Multi-level ATP the transfer of the BOM is sufficient as well. In this case it is possible to use the goods receipt time as a workaround for the order duration.
For the generation of a SNP-PPM from a PP/DS-PPM it is possible to exclude components and Operations by setting the flag #not SNP relevant' in the product master respectively. In the resource master this can be done for SNP-PDS via a BADI (/SAPAPO/CURTO_SNP method CIF_IMPORT)
For the transfer of alternative sequences to the PDS the BADI CUSLNTRTO_ADDIN has to be implemented (example coding in note 357178). For the PPM the User-Exit CIFPPM01 had to be implemented according to note 217210.
<b>Support strategy</b>
Further developments will be done only in PDS . However SAP will continue to support PPM .

    PDS
1)Production Data Structure (PDS) in APO 3.1 & Run Time Object (RTO) in 4.0 and above versions
    2)Master Data Object
3)Useful for scenarios where the component has got different validity periods
4)Used as Master data Basis for Planning in SAP-APO
5)Contains active Master data from iPPE (Integrated Product and Process Engineering) generated from a production version
6)PPDS PDS & SNP PDS can be used as master data for planning
7)Change Management, variant configuration & Phantom assemplies are supported in PDS
8)Sub-contracting in SNP is fully integrated with R/3 is supported in PDS
9)Direct transfer of SNP PDS from R/3 is possible
10)Rapid Planning Matrix can be generated
11)Not possible to maintain PDS directly in APO and can be used only in combination with R/3
12)The transfer of data changes is simpler
13)Not possible to create alternate SNP-PDS in std system for different mode combinations
14)PDS can be automatically generated from two sources ie R/3 and iPPE
    PPM:-
    1)Production Process Model
    2)Master Data Object
3)Cannot be used for scenarios where the component has got different validity period
4)Used as Master data Basis for Planning in SAP-APO
5)Contains active Master data generated from the combination of routing (BoM & receipe) and production versions
6)PPDS PPM & SNP PPM's can be used as master data for planning
    7)Not supported by PPM
    8)Not supported by PPM
9)Not possible here. SNP PPMs will be generated via PPDS PPMs
    10)Not possible
11)PPMs can be directly created in APO and can be modified without R/3 also.
12)Little Complex when compared to PDS
13)Alternate SNP-PPMs can be easily created
14)PPM can be generated automatically generated only from R/3
PDS is used in industries wherein there are multiple components or assemblies having diffeent production versions whose validity periods are different. PPM is being used typically in process industries, chemical industries. PPM is very simple in its usage and very flexible in operations in terms of modifications at APO level and can be referred to client depending on the business requirement.

  • Difference between PPM and PDS, PPDS and SNP

    Hello Gurus,
I'am a beginer to APO so could you please let me know about the difference between PPM and PDS? Also the difference between SNP and PPDS/
    giri

Production Version in ECC can be transferred to APO as:
PPM - Product Process Model or,
    PDS - Product Data Structure
These form the basis master data for Planning in APO
SNP - Supply Network Planning & PPDS - Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling are two Modules in APO for planning purpose.

  • PPM and PDS

    Hi All,
I have PPM and PDS for a location product, How can I control (Except "plan explosion" one in PP/DS tab page of Location product ) wether my SNP run (Heuristic and CTM) to select only PPM in Heuristic and PDS in CTM.
And  have two PDS with diffrent validity periods, where I can see which PDS  is selected for inhouse receipt.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Sreerama.

    Hi Sreerama,
    1) The two areas where the usage of PPM or PDS is defined is
one at the material master in PPDS tab which you have rightly
    mentioned
another at the customisation for PPDS.
If the first one is not defined, system uses the value from
    customisation.
For usage in CTM or in heuristic, you need to define the
products in such a way clearly bifurcate for ctm & heuristic
and maintain material master accordingly because a single
locaiton production cannot be used both for ctm and heursitic
which cannot be of business importance.
    2) Selection of PDS is based on the validity period defined in
the PDS and the priority/cost maintianed in the PDS data.

  • Difference in PPM and PDS.....?

    HI ,
What are the difference between the production process
model (PPM) and the production data structure (PDS).....?
are they totally similar or there are specific applications in which either one of them is only usefull.....?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards

    Hi ,
The PPM is the master data which was available from the very beginning
of APO but will not be developed any further due to some structural limitations
(mainly the lack of engineering change management). The alternative
to the PPM is the PDS. The functionality of the PDS was increased for
APO 4.1. In the releases APO 3.1 and 4.0 the PDS was called run-time object
(RTO). The SAP recommendation is to use PDS for new implementations
    whenever possible.
    Also check below link
Re: Can we use PDS for few material and PPM for other material in SCM sysytem ?

  • What is better to use for CTM: PDS or PPM?

what is better to use for CTM: PDS or PPM?
what is easier to manage and use in CTM : PDS or PPM? and why?thanks
    elena

    Hi ,
In CTM I will recommend  PDS over PPM.
You can directly CIF PDS as SNP PDS from ECC, you do not have to convert from PPDS to SNP unilke PPM.
    PDS supports VC, Phantom assemblies.
PDS can be maintained in ECC and change transfer is easy.
Validity period of components can be specified in the PDS , Which is not possible in PPM.
SAP is developing PDS for future use compared to PPM.

  • PPM & PDS

    Hi, all
what is the different between PPM and PDS ? what their usage in different scenario
    pls advice

    Hi
The following planning functionalities are supported by the PDS but not by the PPM:
u2022 ECM for PP/DS (including the use of phantoms)
u2022 Subcontracting in SNP is fully integrated with R/3
    u2022 Direct transfer of SNP-PDS from R/3
u2022 Use of object dependencies in APO
    u2022 Order-BOM and WBS-BOM
u2022 Rapid Planning Matrix (in combination with R/3-DIMP)
The following planning functionalities are supported by the PPM but not by the PDS
u2022 Maintenance in APO. Since it is neither possible to maintain the PDS in APO nor are there any
BAPIs, it is only possible to use the PDS in combination with R/3.
    u2022 Push-Production
    u2022 Container resources
u2022 Alternative modes for the PDS can either be created using alternative sequences or resource classification
    but not both.
u2022 Time-dependent parameter (can be transferred to the PDS using a Badi)

  • PPM - Procurement priority

We are exploring Capacity leveling with optimization method. from the SAP help documentation, it is understood that Optimizer generates the cost based on the procurement priority maintained in the cost.
    Excerpt from SAP Help:
    "Optimization-Based Capacity Leveling
The system considers the alternative resources according to the
procurement priority of the PPMs or PDS. The system automatically
converts this priority into costs, so that PPMs or PDS with higher
priorities are considered first. The costs of the original resource are
defined by the system as lower than the costs of the alternative
resources, so that this resource always has the highest priority for
    the
optimizer and so that the system uses it completely first."
Base on the info, we setup the PPM master data.In my scenario, we have a product that can be produced on 5 different work centers so i created 5 PPM and assigned different proc priority codes like 1, 5, 10, 15, 20. PPM with priority code 1 is primary resource and rest are alternative.
Expectation was that when CL-OPT is run, Optimizer would generate costs as per the priority codes where 1 is higher priority so lowest cost and rest would be incremental higher cost.Which would drive the leveling of the resource load.
But the fact is optimizer created lower cost 250 for priority 1 PPM and 500 for rest of the PPMs.
I would like to understand, is this the correct behavior as it does not align with the SAP help document and we are not able to get appropriate results.

    Harshil Desai

If you have ERTMS as the sorting criterion, then it is the create date. Otherwise it is purely random. Dont bet on alphabetical as I have sometimes observed to the contrary.

  • Will SAP stop supporting PPM?

With the advent of PDS, PPM has become a tougher master data to maintain. PDS offers lot of capabilities more than PPM but still falls short of allowing maintenance only in ECC and not in SCM at all. Such cases make PPM more easier to use. Can anyone provide proof if SAP will stop supporting the PPM structure and want all customers to move toward PDS?
If this is a future direction of SAP, please let me know when is SAP planning to stop supporting.
    Thanks in advance

    Ken & Pranav
    Thanks for the answers.
    Ken
It will be easier to maintain PPM than PDS in implementations that have just APO with OLTP other than ECC.
Doesn't SAP need to continue supporting PPM in these cases though they do not enhance it?
One other limiting factor for PDS is that it cannot be maintained directly in SCM. This makes it a painful process of maintaining the operation structures for simulation versions. Not sure if SAP will enhance PDS enough that it will maintainable in SCM as I feel SAP is moving in a direction where all the Master data will be maintained in ECC and not SCM.

  • Error while creating a Planned Order

    Hi SAP Experts,
I have an error encountered while creating a Planned Order which is "Mode linkage problem with mode number".
    Diagnosis:
An application program called an LCA routine and the following error occurred:
An order has at least one condition with mode linkage with the same mode number. The activities of this condition must have compatible modes. The modes are compatible when each mode of one activity has a mode for the other activity with the same mode number. The first activity that violates the condition is given in the return code table in ABAP.
Please enlighthen me what is this error and what should be done to this error.
    Thanks in advance,
    Raymond

Check the PPM or PDS being used in the Planned Order.
Most likely you have a Setup Activity followed by Produce Activity. However the Mode (i.e. Resource) used in the two activities are different. The same Mode needs to be used both in Setup and corresponding Produce activity.
    Hope this helps,

  • Set up activities with PP-PI

    Hi all
I'm trying to transfer recipes from ECC to APO, but I have a problem when creating set up activities. In APO they are not being created. I belive is that in the resource there is no formula to calcule the set up time. And there is no place for more formulas.
How can I create set up activities in APO when transferring the recipes??
    thanks so much

    Dear Fernando,
In Resource master we can define a maximum of 6 Standard value parameter. Also we can add multiple capacity categories. You can define formulas for using these parametersfor each capacity category.
The values for the Standard value parameters can be entered in Master recipe. If the particular Operation/Activity is relevant for scheduling the operations are transferred to APO as PPM or PDS.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
    Master data,
Material Indipendent data can be sent without any dependency.
Material Dependent data sequence is as follow.
    Plant,
    MRP areas,
    Supply area,
    Material,
    MRP area material,
    planning material,
    ATP check,
    Purchase info recards,
    schedule agg,
PPM or PDS (But before PPM or PDS  work center should send to apo) If PDS is sending then BOM should send before PDS.
    Transaction data.

  • Creation of Order in DS Planning Board (/SAPAPO/CDPS0)

    Hi all,
My requirement is i want to create order manually in DS planning board by passing product, location, resource, runlength etc.
Again i am using PPM to calculate the setup time (between previous order and the current order).
In order to get the PPM data, i am calling FM "/SAPAPO/DM_PPM_GET_PLAN" and here i pass planid to get the details.
To get planid, i call FM "/SAPAPO/SOS_FIND" i.e. to get source of supply information which includes planid
    Please tell me
    (1) what is planid ?
    (2) How planid is this linked to PPM ?
    (3) What do we mean by sources of supply? Can't we get the same info from pegid ?
    (4) What is the structure of PPM ? I mean what are activities, components, alternative components etc.
    Regards,
    Deb

    Hi Nandha / Vikas
    Thanks for your input.
I am summerizing the whole concept, Please correct me and answer my questions in between :-
In order to create an order in DS Planning board manually, we need information like product, location, resource, quantity etc. (User's input).
Then we should follow the steps as follows -:
Step 1 :- Find Sources of Supply
Since this gives information like how we are going to produce or procure the product. It can be PPM or PDS or Transportation lane.
For PPM we will get the Plan id (Unique ID for PPM) and then we will get the details of PPM accordingly.
But, Please mention what about PDS and Transportation lane ?
I mean from source of supply how can we know that the product can be produced or procured by PPM or PDS or Transportation lane ? Any field indicator is there for PPM or PDS or Transportation lane? Because in my requirement, First i need to check which one is active for the entered product:- PPM or PDS.
    (2) Once we know that the source of supply is PPM or PDS or transaportation lane, then we will call different FMs to get the details.
For PPM we know how to proceed. I mean using planid we can get the details.
But for PDS and Transaportation lane please mention the FM name and i/p parameters to get the details like setup group id, production rate etc.
Thnaks once again for your valuable inputs.
    Deb
