Practical suggestions for splitting up long sequences

Hi
I have recently done a video shoot for a wedding and I have lots of material. A lot of it is just continuous recordings where I do multiple retakes on videoing the flowers or dress or location. I want to be able to split up an hour long video into usable chunks that I can give a sensible name. Is there an easy way in CS3 to mark multiple in/out points on a video that would be listed as separate videos in my content bin or something to that effect? The videos where captured as avi so the alternative would be to use a different program to cut up the videos and then re-import. Any suggestions as to how I can achieve this would be very much appreciated.
Best Regards

Double-click on the clip in the Project Panel to open it in the Source View monitor. Set In and Out points and drag the image from the Source View monitor to the Project Panel. A dialog box will pop up and ask you for a clip name. Set new In and Out points. Drag to the Project Panel. Repeat as desired.
This workflow has the advantage of using a single source file, but with multiple clips in the bin.

  • Split one long sequence to many small sequences

a long sequence can be divided into many small ?

then delete the unwanted sections in each of the four copies.

  • Suggestions for cigarette lighter, long, flexible stalk mount for iphone?

I have had no luck finding a cigarette lighter charger, with a flexible stalk long enough to accommodate any rental car receptacle. I do not want one with an FM transmitter (I've tried too many to count, including the newest $100 Griffin Road Trip, which sounded horrible most of the time through the radio, and had buttons that didn't control the ipod as advertised). Trying to use my excellent Navigon GPS App, which works great, and now plays the ipod in the background, but I have to have a wired headset, and wired lighter cable, so the wires are too much. I will be happy to run a plug in to the line-in radio of my rental cars, but need a mount that can hold my phone comfortably in front of me, and charge at the same time. The Griffin came close, but no banana.
    Suggestions? Thanks.

  • Custom Sequence Settings for Split Screen

    Hello all,
FCP 6. I am doing a split screen where I am combining two 720x480 videos side by side. I did the whole project by scaling down both videos to match whatever the sequence settings were. How can I create a custom canvas/ sequence size to avoid scaling down the frames and cutting on the image quality?
I created a custom sequence setting doubling the width to 1440 and keeping height at 480.
Can I copy and paste the clips from the old sequence without the scaled down quality to the new sequence? How can I do that?
If I open a new sequence is the new setting going to be in effect?
Any other suggestions on how to deal with custom size frame/ split screen?
    Thank you!

    Dear Jim,
Thank you for help! Does make sense. I did all like you suggested. After removing 'basic motion' and pasting into new sequence, the clips appeared big default size instead of small. I re-applied motion attribute like you said, but isn't it scaling down again since I am sizing from big to small (50%) again?
It looks good on the screen but I am not sure about actual resolution of the clip. In clip-item properties-format I read frame size but I am not sure if this info is about the source file or the clip.
I would like to get around this issue without scaling down (keeping the scale in motion tab at 100%).
The way I tried to deal with the scaling and res before I got your answer, was after I changed the 'global' settings for the custom 1440x480 sequence, and after creating a new sequence, I went to sequence settings again (from top menu) and set to custom (1440x480) (with just global settings the pasted clips looked like before). After copying and pasting with removed attributes-distort, all was in the original right/left order normal size and resolution.
The way I tried seems to meet my need (as pasting attributes-motion to all again would be complicated as the design of the project does not stick to the clearly left/right pattern but fluctuates back and forth at times and there is too many short clips).
The only problem I have now is with the RENDER.
After I rendered what I did to your suggested solution and mine (two sequences), the whole project shows in low res. I checked the render settings in Sequence-Render Control, and both resolution and frame rate are set to 100% so I dont know what I do wrong.
    Any suggestions??
    THANKS!!!

  • Any best practice/suggestion on giving Id's for UI Component

    Hi,
I came to know that for better performance, id's on naming containers shall be less than 7 characters in length.
What about UI Components other than container components?
Is there any best practice available for giving Id's for UI Components and its length?
Do we face any issue if we give ids with more than 7 characters (just to make the id meaningful one)?
    Thanks in Advance

The "id" attribute should not be longer than 7 characters in length. This is
particularly important for naming containers. A long id can impact
performance as the amount of HTML that must be sent down to the
client is impacted by the length of the ids.

  • Suggestions for 808 PureView and Symbian Belle

    Hi friends,
I am a proud owner of astounding (and worst marketed extra-ordinary device) 808 PureView. Biggest compliment to it is that it has replaced my SGS2. Yes, truly.
After using 808 for some time now I am quite happy but disappointed with certain things. Few things are so minor that I am surprised why Nokia removed it or didnt implement.
So here I am presenting a list of things which I would request Nokia to fix or implement. I will also request all of you here to add to the list so that Nokia gets a direct feedback and can improve the device and software. Thanks !

  • Any suggestions for getting a Mini to Autoconnect to TC after a reboot?

My wife has a Mac Mini running the latest version of OS X. It is 18 months old.
Everytime she boots her mini it does not automatically connect to the TC wirlessly.
The TC does not broadcast it's SSID.
Every time she boots I have to go and log her in and when I am away on business her Mini can be offline for days.
It would really sweet if there was a way to get the Mini to auto connect, does anyone know of any tools or software that can do this?
I have tried all the normal stuff, entered the Network Name, selected WPA2 Personal then entered the password, also checked the Remember this network (alas but it never does )
This all seems a tad tedious, in this day and age you would think we could do this easier?
Any practical suggestions would be welcome.

Can you connect at all from the Mini to the TC by selecting the network?
    Does it work then?
If it does, then I had a similar problem.
I could connect if I chose the network but restarting the Mini would no longer be connected to the network unless I chose the network again. Then it worked until next restart.
    I had a corrupt .plist.
    Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
I tossed the com.apple.airport.preferences.plist in the trash and restart.
I selected my network and then got back online.
Every restart after that worked just fine. I was automatically connected to the network chosen in the System Preferences.
You might give it a try. The .plist will be created new upon restart and selecting your network.

  • Suggestions For Lightroom

The first change Adobe should make for the improvement of Lightroom is this Forum. I personally find this forum extremely difficult to navigate. It's cluttered, difficult to read and seemingly archaic compared to the Apple Forums.
Here are my others suggestions for Lightroom:
-Allow the ability to select Quick Collection images and Delete them from the disk not just Remove them from the quick collection. The benefit here would be that we could select images from several different folders that might be of the same subject/situation that had been loaded at a different time but still are similar images to others in the collection. This would allow us to clean up redundant images from any number of different folders. Presently when we select Quick Collection images and hit delete it just removes them from the Quick collection leaving them on the hard drive. I want an option to get rid of them from the hard drive.
-When trying to move images from bottom of a gallery to the top of a gallery and there are hundreds of images, grabbing the ones to move up, when getting to the edge of the gallery, the gallery doesnt move consistently.
-When in the compare mode it would be nice to have the file name below each image in the bar that contains the Star rating and pick or reject flag.
-When in the survey mode it would be helpful to differentiate the X & / more effectively. Why not highlight the X in Red and leave the / the color that it is.
-Include a Preference option that allows us to always have the Spell Check enabled when a catalog is opened. Presently you have to continually remember to turn this feature on each time a catalog is opened.
-Spell check does not ignore when I select the Ignore option. Seems to be a bug
-When I select Check Spelling it comes up with the spell check box, up comes the suspect word. I click ignore and nothing happens, I select Next and nothing happens. Bug?
-Would be nice if P-Picks and X-Rejects could be toggled on and off with the corresponding key.
-when loading images from a camera card you have the option to have it load to folders. Presently it loads images to folders, dating those folders by the day the images were shot. It would be nice to be able to tell the loading procedure to create folders by the day images are imported.
-When loading images from camera card you can select a secondary destination. I would like to see the secondary destination look identical to the first destination. Not something completely different as it is now.
-When using the sequential numbering optin for renaming files on import, the last number in the sequence should be remembered by lightroom and the next import should take off where the last import ended. Photo Mechanic works like this as well as Nikon View and Picture Project.
-Is there a way to see more than one line of the caption in the Grid/thumbnail mode? If not that would be beneficial.
-When you select flags and rejects are hidden or shown, currently the grid view goes back to the top of the file/grid. It would be nice if the grid view would stay at the current selection
-would be nice if during the input of captions, while in the minimal Metadata mode, that the main Metadata window would scroll down as you type a long caption. Presently when a caption goes beyond the window at the bottom of the Metadata pane you have to stop and scroll the Metadata/caption pane down to see what you are typing.
-I change metadata in MS Expression and tell it to synch with original NEF. It does which you can see by taking the same image into Photoshop and looking at the metadata there. However, the same metadata does not synch in Lightroom even though I have save to XMP enabled..
-Bug? Going from Grid view to D-Develop. Adjust the exposure and Lightroom hangs up. Have to Force Quit LR to get it back.

Six changes that would be basic improvements - sorry if these look like bug reports, but they have lasted through all the updates and upgrades and I consider them to be overripe for improvement.
For mouse-heavy users it would be helpful to have a Grid icon in the toolbar in the Develop module, the same as appears in the Library module.
The consistency of having a Done button in all places that present a secondary work screen would make leaving those screens simpler.
When organizing folders, keeping the focus local after a Delete would be good, instead of the focus jumping up to a higher level as it does, requiring a search for your location. If you're making a lot of changes this can be time-consuming and frustrating. I know some other program do this, but not all and it's solvable.
When moving a folder of files, the last file doesn't get moved and could wind up in some random place if you don't suspect this and go after it to move it by itself. This seems to be unique to Lightroom.
In leaving Compare, it's not clear which image you're keeping because the filename isn't visible, only the rating (if used). Changing the rating to exit can disable the Done button. To get it back it shouldn't be necessary to swap the images. Why not use a more standard release action like the Escape key?
In LR 3.3, when using the noise reduction slider the option to update the whole filmstrip to use version 2010 is available only if the demonstration "compare" screen is retained with a box checked. If you uncheck that box, there's no way to get that screen back the next time, so the option to update to 2010 for the whole filmstrip at once is gone and subsequently requires one-by-one clicking to update. This could be simpler and faster.
I use LR every day and teach it, but I may have missed something so forgive my naming ills that have already been mentioned. Thanks for listening. DKD

  • How can i split a long video in an iMovie event ?

    Hello,
I have imported some old family films that were on small VHS tapes via an acquisition box (sorry for the bad english) model Elgato Video Capture.
On these tapes there are films that somtimes are several months appart (for exemple tape "1989 - Jully + Christmas"). When I have imported those tape, the elgato program has created a mp4 file per tape, and therefore, when I imported those files into iMovie they are long and contain different things.
I would like to be able to split those long clip (45 minutes) into several small films corresponding to what was being recoreded, making me able to set the dates correctly in order to find clips easily, but I havn't found how to do so yet.
    Have you ?

it is silly nonsense to use trashbin as an 'intermediate' storage.
the Manual I linked to describes the Apple intended, normal way ...
it is a feature of iMovie to process tasks like yours.

  • Suggestion for a Video Monitor For FCP

I am looking for a video monitor to use with FCP. The Sony PVM-14L2 13" has been recommended. Is anyone familiar with this monitor or do you have a monitor which is working well for you that you would recommend.
    1) Should I be looking for anything key features not listed below?
    2) Will I need any other hook ups to make this work with my system?
(Right now I am using a JVC SR-VS30U Dual Deck. A firewire from the computer to the deck and component from the deck to to t.v. the deck also has s-video)
    3) When I move into High Definition will this monitor work?
Key Features of the Sony PVM-14L2 13"
    Variety of Input Options
The monitor accepts composite, S-video, component and RGB signals standard without options. Serial Digital signals can be viewed with the optional
(with audio) or BKM-120D (without embedded audio). Even
, Sony's version of Fire Wire can be displayed with the optional BKM-155DV board.
    Beam Current Feedback Feature
In studio environments, monitors tend to be left on for long periods. This practice leads to white-balance drift and unstable color reproduction. The Beam-Current Feedback circuit corrects for drift over long-term usage of the monitor.
    Professional Set-up Features
Calibrating monitors assures that each display is showing correct colors which will match any other correctly calibrated display. The PVM-14L2 has set-up functions like Blue-Gun, H/V Delay, and selectable color temperature for these critical calibrations.

Sounds like a great choice as long as the size works for you. A small truly high-res monitor is much more useful than a big impressive soft one for analysis monitoring.
    1) I don't think you need anything else unless the JVC thing doesn't work out. In that case you can try your camcorder, or a capture device such as ADS Pyro, Matrox MXO, or one of the Aja or Decklink cards. Depends...
    2) JVC SR-VS30U - I don't know, there are a lot of devices that won't simply pass FireWire through, including many or most DVD recorders. Your best bet is to try it and monitor it on whatever you have.
If you're on NTSC you'll have to pay attention to the black setup. Many consumer digital devices these days won't put in the 7.5IRE setup for North America.
That's OK as long as you aren't using it to do analog conversions. If you can get FCP bars through the thing and set the monitor up properly to them, you should be OK. I'm sure the monitor can be set to 0IRE in menus if need be.
    3) It won't show you an HD signal. If you're using the MXO it will give you a realtime SD downconvert to monitor. But that monitor won't display anything but NTSC and PAL. If it did I would probably say that 13" is too small.

  • Suggestion for a needed Walkman app improvement

    Dear Sirs,
Although I’ll sadly have to part from my Sony Z1 (for other issues reported on this forum and to Sony Xperia Care, namely the touchscreen issue), I would still like to leave a suggestion for the most underachieving app (imho) from a Sony Smartphone.
With the long tradition on audio excellence and the Walkman brand, I would suspect that it would be a strong point on a Sony Smartphone. Strangely enough, the Walkman app made me buy a third party app (PowerAmp) to get some basic functionality like I had on my old iPhone 3GS.
One of the most serious faults of the Walkman app is the lack of volume normalization between audio tracks. Although Sony does provide a workaround (which is nothing more than a dynamic range compressor), it doesn’t make any sense (imho) with today’s technology.
Replaygain (for instance) is a free (but very effective) way of normalizing volumes without degrading the sound quality. Many apps like PowerAmp have it, and even iTunes has a proprietary version of it built in on every device for many years now.
As I said before, this can be done with third-party apps and third-party media management software (like JRiver or the free Foobar), but by doing so, the user loses the integration provided by a unique manufacturer (Sony Media Go -> Sony Walkman).
I’m really just trying to help, as it gets harder to understand why Sony lacks on such elementary things audio-wise, when the same company has Walkmans supporting the highest definition audio formats available today.
I tend to relate Sony with high quality digital audio products, so it seems strange that this particular app is so rudimentary on these levels. The Walkman app is eye-candy, but it should also be “hear-candy”, which it isn’t.

You need to pass this on to the Sony delvelopers site as this is a user support forum

As you can see, it's a bit more typing than before, but it sure looks better. I might shorten the names for the templates. I wanted to make them memorable so they are a bit long.
As you can see, the problem of i18n links integration was fixed, so you can use existing i18n template and combine with the new "Article summary" set.
I will modify the article about writing summaries to include those templates and examples.
EDIT:   the i18n links in the article are just examples. Don't use them, since they lead to non-existing pages.
EDIT2: Okay, I've played around with the appearance of the summary box, but I'm at work now, so it's going nowhere. I'll play with it some more when I get home.

  • A Suggestion for Skype to consider regarding the T...

Hello, I have a suggestion for Skype. When I look at my "Purchase History" in my Skype account it no longer shows the time my order was placed. Not having this information makes it difficult managing my subscription.
I would like to see Skype include the time a transaction was made in the "Purchase History" .
    Thanks.

Elitist is not the right word... But your expected to do you part too.
I honestly think the "The Arch Way" wiki lays it out pretty damn well.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way
Read that, if it sounds good you will likely enjoy arch. If it sounds bad, yeah arch may be bad for you.
Truth is the wiki is fantastic, and dedicated people have spent an amazing amount of time putting it together... So for ALMOST EVERYTHING there is detailed step by step information that basically will fix your problem. You just need to read it, understand it and possibly even research on your own the parts you don't understand.
When people just come to the forum and ask to be told directly instead, yeah we may seem elitist expecting they know enough to figure it out on their own... But that is only because the community already wrote out a really really detailed explanation for them, but they just wanted someone else to do the work/troubleshooting for them. Its a bit weird to ask stranger to care more about your problems then you do
But, detailed and specific questions are met with wonderful and fantastic help. This is the most stable and functional distro/operating system I have ever run (in part because after "building" it its pretty easy to fix.)
This ISN'T a newbie distro in that its not for people who just want a working computer for minimal effort... That doesn't mean its hard mean or bad, but it does mean its targeted towards serious users who want to be able to build and fix their own system. A certain standard is expected (and I really like that), its not hard to meet it.... But if you don't want anything expected of you you may not want arch. Reading a paying attention can make it more or less an easy and fruitful experience for even novice users however.

  • Suggestion for Apple or Third-party software company?

My first question is, where should I post the following suggestion for an improvement in FCP or for the creation of a third party software – suggested sites, blogs, etc.?
Next, my recommendation, and then my explanation of the reason why (including my personal semi-disaster):
Recommendation: That someone create a “Project Management” software for FCP (essentially a file management program that runs in the background) that organizes and tracks all of the files created during editing/post production – including the log/capture or log/transfer of the original footage, the audio files, stills, effects, etc, AND all of the files created by the program -- Live Type, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, and Color (especially color). The reason for this is that FCP has an incredibly complicated filing system that results in shots, files, documents, etc., being distributed all over the place – and not all known to the filmmaker or identified in the documentation. And, that condition can lead to disaster – see below.
Explanation: I just finished my first HD project using Studio 2, including sound track pro and color. After completing what I though was the absolute final version, I burned a one-off DVD and ran it by several filmmaker and non-film maker friends. They all spotted a small sound problem with one cut, so I went back to tweak it – and discovered that ALL of the footage had gone offline. I had nothing, nada, zilch. I had saved earlier sequences (rough cut, polished cut, etc.) and all the original footage appeared, but I had taken the final version into color for some corrections and adjustments, and ALL of those shots/files were missing.
After burning what I believed to be the final cut, I had cleaned up my hard disk, moving stuff to my backup hard disk, to my RAID array, and to the trash. So, after the initial shock and complete panic, several hours of searching all of these drives, led me to the file that contained the files that contained the color corrections – in my trash, which fortunately had not been emptied. I have no idea where the files were before or how they got into the trash – obviously they were not added to the scratch disk with all of the original footage.
Part of the difficulty of finding the shots was the discovery that color creates a file folder, that holds a set of file folders, each of which holds only one shot. In order to reconnect, I had to move the parent folder to the desktop, and then move all of the shots, one at a time. into a single folder, and then point reconnect to that folder. Problem solved.
However, now I face that question of archiving the project, moving all of the files off my hard drive so I can use the space for my next film, and I am terrified that I will leave something out, and not be able to recover the project in the future. Having a project management software that organizes and coordinates all of that would be a lifesaver – and well worth the purchase price.
Anyone who would like to explore this idea, please feel free to contact me – [email protected].

You've just learned a hard lesson. Put your current energy into your education, not finding a way to wallow in ignorance.
There already is a hardware device that will do what you want. It's called a "manual". In particular, the sections that relate to "where the program stores media". Pay very close attention to those sections and set up your computer so that all the scratch and storage pointers are aimed where you want. It's very simple to have them all go to one drive.
Then, when it's time to archive the project because you are starting a new project, just purchase another hard drive for the new project. They are absurdly inexpensive these days.
Remove the drive with your project to be archived from your computer (since you now know how to keep all the files organized, they will be all together) - and plug in a new disk for the next project.
If you want a backup, use carbon copy cloner to simply duplicate the drive (or simply just copy the relevant folders- you'll know which ones) to another drive (or get a RAID 1 device)
    good luck,
    x

  • Standard or Suggestions for Engineer-to-Order Production Order Paperwork?

    Hello all,
I am a business user in charge of production scheduling for a engineer-to-order / make-to-order manufacturer.  We print paper production orders and use these to drive manufacturing in the factory.
Can anyone point me to information about best practices or suggestions for the production order paperwork?  Like, what information should be on it, and what the format should look like, etc?
Right now we just have the operations, the produced material number, the confirmation numbers, and the production order header dates.
    Thanks for any advice!
    Timothy

    Hi Timothy,
Printing of shop floor papers varies from client to client. It depends mainly on ground user requirement on what information he want to see. Users now are refering to standard tcode COOIS to check all the related informations.
Some fields which are most required to users are as given below. Format should be operation wise information if each operation is performed individually by different users.
    Order Number
    Sales Order Number
    WBS Element
    Material Number and its description
    Order Quantity
Order Start date and Finish date
    Operation Number
    Operation Quantity
    Operation Text
Tools details if any PRT is linked
    Confirmation Number
Reservation Number/Item number if materials are linked to the operation
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ramagiri
