Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You need to opoen that preference page, and then click on the little oval grayish button on the top right hand corner. Somehow that got click when you last visited the bookmarks page.
You're other options should now appear.

  • Safari preferences problems

Yesterday I started having problems with Safari (2.0.3).
Default settings changed to Western (ISO Latin 1 ) then I was unable to use my wireless Intellimouse to move back and forth thru web pages. It does in Firefox with no problems. It seems that the update MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.6PPC.dmg may have something to do with it. I first installed the upgrade last week but had no problems until yesterday.
When I try the buttons for forward and back it zooms in and out on the web page at hand.
Changed back to Western ( Mac OS Roman) deleted the plist files, also installed Safari 2.0.2 from a backup drive, used the older plists files.
Then a fresh install of the Intellimouse software 5.0.2.
Then later searched for a update to the Intellimouse software on Microsoft's web site found 6.0 and installed it. Changed the control to Intellipoint pointer speed jsut in case it might work.
But still get the same results after all this..
All keyboard commands and menu bar controls work fine.

Thank you for bringing this to me attention:
As a workaround, have you tried forcing a manual assignment of the cmd+[ >>and cmd+] keystrokes to the 'back' and 'forward' buttons in the intellimouse >>software? I'm not familiar with the software, but I'd hope it's possible.

Well I do not know what I was thinking at the time, but got it to work by hitting both keys at the same time to set up each button.
I was clicking the Command box then inserting the [ or ] key in the blank input box at the bottom.
But as far ar the preferences changing to something other than what I had them set for. Is still a mystery.
Thanks again for your help with this.

  • Problems with Safari and Firefox (HTTP?)

Problems with Safari and Firefox (HTTP?)
    On a laptop G4, 10.5.8 and Safari 5.02 I experience the following:
On the account of my oldest daughter everything works fine, i.e. wireless internet works and no problems with mail or safari.
On the same laptop, on the account of my other daughter, the wireless is OK, she can mail etc. But safari nor firefox works. It says: can’t find server (whatever site) and in the activity window it looks if safari tries to open files (in the safari preferences-folder) in stead of http. Same applies to Firefox, so maybe it has more to do with HTTP in general?
What goes wrong? What to do? I tried the following on the host terminal (tips from Apple)
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
    and
    defaults delete com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled
    but that did not help,
    Nanne

I'm still wondering why it happens now at this moment in time...
PC does seem to be a bit odd & inconsistent, the few times I've tested with it, at least so far as we content filtering goes; and if I remember rightly, you're not the first to report previously ok settings suddenly preventing some or all internet until pc is switched off altogether.
    It may work when re-enabled

Empty the Safari cache more often.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Customizing The Tool Bar and Setting Preferences Problems

    Need Help With Safari
While trying to customize the toolbar and setting preferences like setting auto fill, adding Develop or any other preference everything looks fine, I shut down Safari and re-open and everything I changed has been lost.  I've tried removing the P-Lists, re-installing Mountian Lion 10.8.4 and several other things to fix this problem.
One other thing that happens is, I try to add a new folder to the favorites bar and all it does is loop. once the looping startes I have to force quite.  The only way to add a new folder is on my iPhone or iPad.

Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Preferences Problem

This one's a little tricky. First some history: After suffering a massive Kernal Panic problem following an upgrade to 10.4.6, I had to reinstall to 10.4.3. I'm afraid to upgrade any further at this time.
Since that time, I believe Safari is responsible writing 40mb files over and over, filling up the Preferences directory until the hard drive is full.
I used OmniDiskSweeper to find the files initially, but now I just go in and delete them.
Along with that Preferences problem, my Accounts and Dock preferences have changed on their own. My computer used to just start up with no login, then suddenly it starting asking for a log in. I started up the other day, and it ran that User Introduction Setup program that occurs when you first start up after installing OSX for the first time. I turned on the computer today, and my doc was back to default.
It also doesn't always start up completely, stalling before the hard drives mount.
I told you it was tricky. Any advice would be great.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Are you running Norton anything?
There is a bug in their software that will fill a drive up also the 10.4.6 update causes a problem with their software.
So I would just start over with a fresh install of the OS again but follow these steps.
1: Backup files to cd/dvd, not to a drive if possible.
2: C boot off Tiger and select Disk utility, Erase w/Zero option format HFS+
3: Install Tiger, Developers Tools and and bundled apps like iLife, setup and run Software update until clear (download the combo updater instead)
4: Install iLife '06 and update. Repair permissions
5: Install apps from original Tiger ready sources and disks, update, Repair Permissions. Don't install Norton or anything using your admin password.
6: Any external drives or brand new boot drives different from Apple, visit the makers sites and download any driver updates.
7: Trick out your new OS, desktop whatever the way you like it.
8: Get yourself a external drive and a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner, Erase w/Zero the new drive. Clone the pristine boot drive to the external. Follow this:
    http://forums.bombich.com/viewtopic.php?t=2607
9: Set the external as boot and check it out, disconnect it.
    10. Now you can start playing with potentially infected files (metadata exploit), root level installs (Norton is still not advised), OS modifications and whatnot.
If something screws up and you want to start over, first c boot from the Tiger install disk and Erase (Zero only needed once per drive) before booting from the clone and reverse cloning.
I would get a another drive for cloning your current boot drive every week or so just to minimalize downtime if your main hard drive dies.
Using this method of cloning makes resolving any issue a breeze, you just go back to a earlier configuration that you know works and it's pretty easy to guess it's the last thing you did that messed up your system.

  • Problem with Safari linking to outlook?

This Mac runs snow leopard developed, the user had it set up so that whenever you open safari it would go directly to Outlook but now a problem with Safari not linking to Outlook anymore, there is no problem with safari and the net and firefox links directly to outlook when opened up, how can I fix the safari outlook situation please?

Safari menu -> preferences -> General -> the first item lets you select the e-mail reader on some versions of Safari.  If it doesn't, look throughout the preferences.

  • Problems w/ Safari 5.0 Since Installation

I have had ongoing problems with Safari ever since I installed v5.0. For most websites (even the ones I check multiple times per day), Safari "can't find server" after loooonnnng period of trying, but retry is almost always successful. (Yes, I've emptied cache, too many times to count. It doesn't help.) I've used Safari for years, have never had a problem with it until now. Yet the discussions on this board don't seem to address my problem -- it doesn't crash, it just fails to find servers. Any ideas?

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
You should also try resetting your router.

  • Certificate selection problem in Safari

    Hi ,
I have certifcates A,B,C,D for the same site , whenever i use the Mozilla it is asking which one to select , but somehow i dont know why Safari is asking the same option.
It is forcing me to accept Certifcate A to that paricular site. How to solve this problem in safari.
    Regards
    Vikranth

Hello. I feel your pain and frustration with the print selection problem in safari, especially in Snow Leopard. I have spent hours trawling help pages and forums etc. BUT YEE HAA (sorry got a bit excited, but it really was hours) I found the answer. So here goes.
    Click on Safari
Scroll down to services then slide to right
Scroll down to services preferences and click
Scroll down to the Text section
If you Tick the Text box it will choose all options for you. Or if you don't want all options in the Text list, then untick Text box and tick options you do want.
BUT for your print selection problem make sure you tick NEW TEXT EDIT WINDOW CONTAINING SELECTION.
Then when you want to select something in a web page you want to print (including pictures etc) then highlight it, then Right click. And low and behold, in the list is NEW TEXT EDIT WINDOW CONTAINING SELECTION. Click that, Then press cmd+p and your printing.
I really hope that helps with your problem
I can now go to sleep.

  • Strange font problem in Safari, only in one account

    Hi,
Safari (3.2.1) renders small fonts on some pages incorrectly, but does so only on one user account. On nytimes.com, for example, the headlines are all fine, but the text is thin and hard to read.
I have cleared caches, deleted User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist, used Onyx to clear out various User caches, and checked to make sure I don't have Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic in my Font Book (these had mentioned as problems in various posts). In my own account, Firefox 3 renders those same texts correctly. So the problem seems to be isolated to Safari on one account. I would be grateful to hear if you can suggest a remedy.
    Best,
    Michel

    Hi Michel,
Might be a problem with a local font, or settings within Safari's preferences.
Within Safari, make sure your preference settings are correct.
In the Appearance panel, default encoding is "Western (ISO 1), Standard and Fixed Width Fonts - I set mine to Skia. I believe the default font is Times. Either works fine.
In the Advance panel, make sure the Style Sheet is set to "none".
Outside of Safari, open Font Book from your Applications Folder. Highlight All Fonts, then scan the list. If you see any blue dots, that indicates a duplicate in your Font collection. You can remove the duplicates as follows: single-click on the first font listed, then Command/A keys to select "all". Then, go to the edit menu and select "resolve duplicates".
Also, with everything still selected, in the File Menu, select "Validate Fonts". If errors appear, correct them by removing the corrupted font. Lastly, download a copy of Font Nuke. This will allow you to clean the Font cache.

  • New problem w/ Safari opening gifs

I am having a new problem with Safari that I didn't have a couple months ago. On a certain websites if I open an image of a product to make it bigger, instead of a larger image I now get a window opening with no image. Instead in the example below all I seem to get is an image 4x4 pixels (at least that is what the new window title says). This occurs with any browser I have tried in OS X including iCab, Opera, and Firefox. However, using OS 9 Classic (and Windows), all the browsers bring up the enlarged image perfectly. My current settings have Javascript on and popup windows are allowed. I can't figure out what is going on here. Any suggestions for a fix would be appreciated.
Here is a link to an example where at the bottom there are images to enlarge a watch:
    http://www.ireplicastore.com/BR01-97-Power-Reserve/SS-Casing-White-Dial.html

You don't need to disable your pop-up blocker. All the small images have is a link to a larger .jpg image on their server. I have no problem viewing them.
So, having said that and noted that you are also on a G5 and 10.4.11, I can suggest the following:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5.2, but please see my footnote).
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
The new RealPlayer Plus (v.11) is still in beta and therefore free, but works well on Tiger. It includes a download function, and you can get that here:
    http://uk.real.com/player/mac/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
    Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back.
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1

  • GMail problems with Safari

    Greetings.
GMail won't address properly in Safari (it's fine in Firefox). Address autofill doesn't work; bcc link disappears when selected and no box appears; ditto for cc. I understand I may solve the problem by trashing the plist; however, I don't know how to get to Library under my user name in Lion.
    Assistance appreciated.

I don't know how to get to Library under my user name in Lion.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
For LIon:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
When you have problems wtih Safari "autofill" go to Safari > Preferences then select the Autofill tab. Make sure:  Using info from my Address Book card is selected.
Jerry...  are you aware you can avoid having to use web based email via a browser? You can setup your Gmail account using the Mac Mail app that's pre installed on your Mac.
Launch Mail  (The icon is in your Dock) then from the menu bar (top of your screen) click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
    Click: +
Enter your name, Gmail user name and password the click Create.
If you have unread mail messages you'll see a red bade on the Mail icon in the Dock. Same for creating a new mail message.
No more having to access your Gmail via a browser.
