Preserve ID3 tags in MP3/AIF files when importing to FCS

I've got 7000 music files in a carefully groomed iTunes library, each track donated by a local musician for use in our local television productions. I need to move them out of this lame iTunes storage system and into Final Cut Server for use throughout our facility.
When I import files, the ID3 tags are not preserved. I don't want to hand enter 7000 artist/album/track names all over again. That's madness.
Working with AIFF files mostly, a few MP3s. Final Cut Server 1.5.2.
Anyone got any tips?

There is a solution that involves pruning Spotlight records of the said audio files. The only catch is that it requires Spotlight indexing to be on, which may not be desirable in an Xsan environment. Another approach is to use AtomicParsley (http://atomicparsley.sourceforge.net/) to retrieve the tags. Either way, you will need to generate XML files that Final Cut Server can read. I would recommend using Ruby and Jim Weirich's excellent Builder gem (http://github.com/jimweirich/builder).
So, make a subscription for new audio assets, run a script that retrieves metadata from the original file and then write a setMd XML file to a Final Cut Server watch folder. There are a few things you will need to solve, such as retrieving the path of the original media. If coding is not your thing, you might consider Transmogrifier (http://transmogrifier.sourceforge.net/), which I've never tried, but does seem to solve many of these issues.
Good luck.

  • How do you force itunes comments to ID3 tags in MP3 files?

I have comments all throughout itunes. The mp3 files do not have those comments in the ID3 info.
How do you force itunes comments to write out to ID3 tags in MP3 files?
The folder and files all have write permission.

Yeah, don't do that, you probably also degrade the sound quality... If you've confirmed it is something odd with multiple tags try this.
Select a group of mp3 files (You might want to start with a smart playlist so you don't mess with any other format)
Right-click and use Convert ID3 Tags > None (may need to repeat this step if multiple tags)
Then right-click and use Convert ID3 Tags > v2.3 (v2.4 support still patchy from various accounts)
Downside is that it will lose any embedded artwork, but it should preserve all other meta-data, both tag-based and stored within the library itself.
In fact, if you use my CreateFolderArt script before and after updating the tags it should archive any artwork as a local Folder.jpg image for each album and then reinsert that image on the subsequent run... Check it out on a single album first. If it doesn't work as expected let me know and I'll tweak the script to achieve this end.

  • Can iTunes write corrected ID3 tags to the main files?

I'm sure this has been posted somewhere already, but I can't find it, so here goes.
I have changed several hundred ID3 tags by editing the files in iTunes. Titles, artists, album, etc. The problem is, the main files aren't updating. SO if I change an entire album's ID3 info in iTunes, then delete it from iTunbes, then import it again, it's not updated. Is there a way iTunes can transfer whatever information I have changed within the application to the main files? I tried using the "Convert ID3 Tags" inside of iTunes and it didn't work.

    villenuv27 wrote:
It does for most fields, but it won't change the song title.
I still don't understand what you mean by "main files" or why you are deleting and re-importing. Sorry, but without more information, I don't have any suggestions. iTunes writes tags just fine for me but I allow iTunes to organize all my music. My iTunes files are my only music files.

  • Why duplicate files when importing

Why am I getting duplicate files when importing into iTunes? I am dragging and dropping them into iTunes. When I ask to find file in finder, I am sent to the iTunes music folder and there are 2 files for each song added. I don't have that kind of space!
I spent several hours trying to clean this up and deleted duplicates out of iTunes library, then out of the music folder. I tried to test which file of the song I was deleating (orig file, not file1) and now .... iTunes can't find about 3,500 tracks that will need to be reassociated. What is the easiest way to do that?
I'm not sure if this is another subject or not, but when I go to delete a track it does not show up in trash first. I only get one window asking me if I want to delete this - click yes and it's forever gone. Do not pass trash. YIKES. Is there a way to get it into trash -> then empty trash like everything else?
    Thx.

Maybe I may have figured out part of my question ... these albums have a .mu3 file. Would that be causing the duplicates?

  • How can I rename files when importing?

Is there a way to rename files when importing them? Every method I've tried retains the original file name the camera assigns (e.g. DSC_0001). I'd like the ability to rename the files automatically either with a date or event name with sequential numbering following.
    Thanks!

First you will have to upload from the camera to a folder on the Desktop where you can batch rename them before importing into iPhoto. That's a safer workflow IMO because you can make sure the photos are safely on the hard drive before starting any other operation.

  • ID3 tags in MP3 files

    Hello everybody!
How can I read the ID3 tags from an MP3 file? Not just the title, artist and album. All of that. I know the last 128 bytes are reserved for ID3 tags in version 1. But in version 2 (and over) have a lot of other tags, like the album picture (APIC), year (TYER). So how can I do that?
    By Gericop
    P.S.: I don't want to use a 3rd party package...
Edited by: Gericop on Feb 2, 2008 7:17 PM

It's not an XML format. If you read this last 128 bytes, you can see title, album and some more infos, but you have to parse it yourself. That isn't hard. But I don't know, how can I determine the v2 tags (and their size).

  • How to edit ID3 tag of mp3 file?

Id3INFO but I know it's read-only. How can I change the ID3Tag an mp3? Any tutorial or tips?

to edit ID3 info in an AIR application? I cannot be of help.
However, there are many free apps available for mp3 editing- one that I use is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).
Just open MP3 in Audacity(v1.2.6), go to Project > Edit ID3 tags.

  • ID3 tag information not showing up on imported files

I've only had my iPod for a couple of days and I'm working right now on importing all my computer's mp3 files into iTunes, using "add folder to library." Most of the time it's going fine, but for some files the ID3 information will not show up for no apparent reason when it is definitely there (it shows up fine in Winamp etc)--sometimes it will even be only a few songs in a folder with the others working! I have no idea what to do, and when I search the forums all I can find is other people having the same problem but no answers. Someone help please?

In iTunes, select all the songs.
Go to menu Advanced -> Convert ID3 tags.
    Select ID3 tag version: V2.2.

  • Missing ID3 Tags on MP3 CD burned with iTunes

I have a Sony CD Player in my car. This Player supports mp3 CD's. To Burn such CD's with iTunes is not the Problem.
iTunes seems not to set the ID3-Tag in it's Libary. Is it possible to set the iTunes-Libary-Informations (as they are displayed on my Screen) as ID3 Tags to the Files ? Are there Risks within ?

Ooops. You just created a lot of work by erasing the tag info.
I think there are some scripts out there that can fill in ID3 tags based on file names.
This page is from an apple discussions regular poster:
    http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp
You could try the "TagFromFilename" script.
For future, itunes does not have the ability to update tag info like Windows Media Player does. I suppose you could see what WMP will do, before trying that script.
Since I haven't used either one to do this, I can't say how well either works.

  • CS6: old problem... no ID3 tags in MP3s -- solved in Audition CC?

    Hi,
known problem: Audition CS6 (Win7) saves ID3 tags only after re-opening a mp3, adding the meta data and saving the file again (as mp3).
You can not edit a file losless as WAV and save this file as mp3 -- the ID3 tags are lost.
    Not a usual behaviour
Question: is this bug (in my opinion it's not a feature...) still "implemented" in Audition CC?
    thanks!
    ... a frustrated user

I use CC and I just had to drop ISRC codes into a heap of wav files as well as update the ID3 and RIFF data
I converted them all to mp3 files using dbPoweramp (because that's what I'm used to doing) and all the details were there in both the wav & mp3 files
    Hope that helps
PS: I also opened an mp3 and added some ID3 data and saved it and the data was still there

  • ITunes not displaying 'copying files' when importing songs

When importing a large number of MP3 files, say an albums worth, iTunes refuses to display the 'copying files' progress bar at the top of the window. It is a process of trial and error clicking on the arrow to get the right progress bar to display, when and if I manage to get the appropriate progress bar up it will not stay for longer than a few milliseconds. Is this something I can fix or yet another sloppy bug in iTunes 7?

    Hi,
Welcome to the group. I'm not sure why hitting the arrow next to the box isn't working as mine always works. I have the latest version and haven't had a problem yet.
Not sure if this will help but here is a link you can check out:

Maybe someone else will have a solution.

  • What happens to Raw files when importing Raw+JPG from camera to Lightroom Mobile on iPad? Only JPGs are showing up.

Hey I am Brian, and I was wondering how Lightroom mobile works again as in when importing photos directly into iPad using the camera connection kit.? This is for IPad 2.  I . Like when importing raw files. now I just did a photo shoot. and I just uploaded them into lightroom 5 on desktop. the raw files are being pushed as smart priviews acroos ipad and iphone. its kinda cool seeing cr2 file showing up on lightroom mobile. when its coming from lightroom 5. but what about coming from camera to ipad.?
I thought you can import a Raw plus jpeg into ipad and it shows up as a jpeg plus raw file. well its not doing that. shows up as just jpeg.
cant wait for next update  of lighroom mobile.

With this version of LR Mobile we not support the direct RAW import.

  • Aperture 3.1 can't find/see my Canon RAW files when importing

Aperture 3.1 cannot see my CANON RAW files when doing import!!!
Do I really have to re-reference each image in the library if I have moved the library to a different volume? Images are not moved to the library, only referenced.

You don't want to re-import files if you move the library. You just need to reconnect the masters.
If you moved the whole thing over at once it should be easy; if you monkeyed with the folder names you could have a lot of work on your hands.

  • Any way to rename files when importing from camera with iPhoto?

I have a naming scheme that I've used when importing photos from my camera (e.g. 2008-09-12-Event ). I can't create a custom folder (in Pictures but outside iPhoto Library) or rename things when importing with iPhoto - is that right? I can't find any advanced options to import ...
If I want this (and don't want to use Adobe Bridge CS3), do I have to get Aperture?
    Thanks -
    Alexa
p.s. I haven't really figured out WHERE my photos go with iPhoto? I've been editing in Photoshop Elements 6 but then have to "Save As" to replace the file - saving it doesn't do it (I think that sends it to the iPhoto library somewhere?) Eek...

    Alexa:
    You might consider this workflow:
1 - using either Image Capture or a card reader upload the images to a folder on the desktop.
2 - name the folder with a brief description of the shoot. I use a short date and description: 08/01/08-Dinner at Toad Hall
3 - use a file renaming application like Resize! to batch rename the files to your specification. I use the international date (for the capture date) and a brief description: 2008-08-01-Dinner at TH-001.jpg.
This allows for good chronological searching and sorting as well as text searching on the description. It also avoids duplicate file name issues in the future. Granted a few extra steps up front but saves me a lot of time later on.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Disabling "move files when importing" with Adobe Premiere Elements

I want pictures/videos to stay in file location when importing them into Adobe Premiere Elements (I use Adobe organizer) as I also use the files in Adobe LIghtroom. The respective option cannot be disabled in the import dialogue.

Could you elaborate on what you are doing and the problems that you are running into?
What version of Premiere ELements and its Elements Organizer are you using and on what computer operating system is it running.
My problem in understanding your question involves the following thoughts.
When you import files into Premiere Elements or its Elements Organizer, the originals remain at the computer hard drive save location. The program has just thumbnails of the files, and those thumbnails need to trace back to the originals at the hard drive save location. Is the problem in a shortcoming of the Lightroom program?
We will be watching for clarification.
    Thank you.
