Preserving Meta Data when encoding JPEG (JAI)

I have a project where the requirements are that images which I compress (using the JPEG encoder of JAI) must be as much compressed as possible, but also must not be altered in any other way from the original image file, i.e. things like meta data must be preserved exactly as it was, and preferably other things in the header (such as resolution) should also be preserved.
I have had no problems with the compression process as such, but unfortunately it seems that JAI writes a fresh new (default) header every time the compressed (encoded) image is written out. I also tried the new Java Image I/O stuff for doing this, and it seems to have exactly the same behaviour.
I have searched both thses APIs extesively for something which would enable me simply to set the option that original meta data (and preferably all header data) should be preserved, but to no avail.
I do realize that image meta data can be both read and written (at least using the Image I/O), but I find it quite complex and also find it a pitty and a waste to have to do that when the requirements are not about altering/processing any of this data, but simply about leaving it alone.
If any one has any suggestions about how this problem might be solved, I would be very interested to know about it, and very greatful for any hints or pointers to information also.
Thank you.
Helgi

What do you meen about meta-data??? Can you provide an example.....
i.e. an initial image you have, in what format is in, it's meta-data (as you say ) and what you finally get encoding

  • Too much meta data when importing to Flickr

I've noticed that when I export a photo directly to Flickr it seems to carry with it a TON of useless meta data. It happens when I use the Flickr export plug-in as well as updating to Flickr from their site. Here is an example of too much data (basically everything after Compression):
    http://www.flickr.com/photo_exif.gne?id=108281029&context=set-1648131
If I retouch the photo in Photoshop then everything below image length is not include (which is my preference). Here is an example:
    http://www.flickr.com/photo_exif.gne?id=111724050&context=set-1648131
Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone been able to change this function? Thanks!

I have not used my EOS-M for video but the GoPro 3+ Black files import with all Metadata intact.

  • Inquiry: preserve and carry-over Creation & Modification Dates when encoding via AME

Greetings. I need to encode a series of AIC offline files and it is critical that the Creation Date and Modification Date matches the original source file.
Currently, my encoded AME files display Creation and Modification Dates and Times that represent the processing date and time.
In other words, the files indicate "Today" rather than the day and time of the shoot (two days ago).
I've FAQ'd and Help Manual'd this inquiry thoroughly to no resolve.
Any ideas where I should look to help me maintain and preserve the original source file Date & Time?

  • What steps to take to preserve iTunes data when reformatting computer?

I have iTunes for my iPhone and connected to an Apple TV and an AirPlay speaker. My computer, a Windows 7 machine, is getting glitchy and I want to reformat and reinstall the operating system.
I want to know what I should do to back up my Apple data before I reformat.
I don't have any itunes music purchases
    I have some podcasts
I have some paid apps on the phone
My entire mp3 collection is stored on a separate drive, just linked to iTunes
    What should I do to
Ensure that I have all of my apps and podcasts when I reinstall iTunes on my computer?
Preserve my phone backups that iTunes does?
Is there anything else I need to think about before reformatting?
    Thanks!

Do the same thing you would do with any other data you wish to preserve on the computer, back it up..
What works best for me is creating a complete image of the drive as it exists currently to an external drive.  Then once the computer has been formated and reloaded I can put the content I want and need back on the new drive from the backup.  The advantage is I know exactly where the data belongs based off that backup image.

  • Missing EXIF data when PRINTING jpeg using Print or Slideshow Module (LR2)

    Folks,
Is there a way to have LR2 include EXIF information when you create a JPG via the Print or Slideshow Module? The EXIF data is present if I export via the Library Module.
However, if I "print" a jpeg either under the Slideshow or Print Module, most of the EXIF data particularly the camera info is missing.
    Thanks for your help.
    Jg

Thanks Bob. I believe I have tried that...when you print to jpeg you have option where to save and I save to same folder and then re-synchronize folder in lightroom. Then I try to synchronized metadata between the original file and the new jpeg but the camera and other exif does not transfer over. The title, caption and copyright does work but your basic info such as camera, ISO, lens, f stop and shutter speed are missing

  • Possible to preserve creation date when copying an email file?

    I'm using a PowerBook Pro 17" running Mac OS X 10.8.3.
I'm copying email files (both Apple Mail and Outlook 2011) by dragging them from their email folder to the desktop.  In the past, the creation date used to be preserved.  But tonight, the creation date is being replaced by the modified date (aka NOW!).  Since my emails are organized by creation date, this puts me in a tough spot.  Is there a simple (or even complicated) way around this problem?
    Thanks.
    Paul

One way to do it would be to place the files in a separate folder, then create a new folder of the same name on your external HD and use an application like SyncTwoFolders to copy the contents from one folder to the other.
Or simply burn that folder to a DVD.

  • Changing meta data when burning CD

I just burned a CD that had only song title, artist, time and year in the Playlist. When the CD mounted after burning, it had artist, album, genre and time. What happened? Are these defaults and if so, how can they be changed?

If it is audio ("regular") CD format then it won't carry metadata no matter what the source.  If you are buring the AAC files or have mp3 files with tags then the data gets carried over.

  • When I copy files from my camera to my C drive and import to PP there isn't any meta data when I import direct from camera it is available.

My camera is a Sony HDR-CX730 AVCHD format
Software is Windows 7 and CS6 Production Suite
When importing images direct from the camera all metadata such as dates, time etc is available in PP
When files are  copied from the camera to C Drive on the computer and then imported into PP the metadata is lost.
What do I need to do?

Thought it might have been the case. My GH3 also shoots both AVCHD and MOV/H.264  files. With the GH3, the AVCHD is both more complicated (on account of the folder structure) and a slight bit noisier ... with no other image quality gain. So I've done as most folks, shot really only the MOV with it.
But that first bit of shooting with it ... um ... naive, shall we say? ... after 35+ years of pro stills portrait shooting, and more than a decade totally digital, well ... yea, I just grabbed the image files too. As do an awful lot of people. A very common thing to solve around here!

  • Copying meta data when using cp in terminal

I'm copying images off my camera into a folder on the desktop.
    i'm using the command.
find . name "*.JPG" -exec cp {} /[desktop]
however the files do not carry over the metadata for the original images. ie. All the pictures apear as taken the day i made this transfer.
Anyone know how to ensure the metadata is carried over also ?
    Thanks,.
    G

Just to add to J D McIninch's answer, keep in mind the distinction between image metadata (eg, EXIF tags), which the system does not extract from the file, and the filesystem metadata (plus resource fork, if any), which cp copies with the -p option.
Image metadata is indexed by Spotlight (if compatible or the right plugin is installed); and you should be able to access it with your image manager.
To examine metadata indexed by Spotlight, use mlds. If you need a CLI tool to manipulate image metadata, you probably couldn't do much better than Phil Harvey's ExifTool

  • Photos on my Mac show the wrong date when imported from a portable Hard Drive

I’ve got loads of photos that I had imported from my old PC.Last night I decided to start going through them and trying to get them sorted
prior to importing into iphoto. I discovered that some of the pictures (in particular ones I have taken from my old Iphone) all had the same date and time
assigned to them. When I checked the Exif details, it listed the correct camera etc, but the date created seems to have changed to the date I copied them to my portable hard drive.
I thought this was strange as when they were on my PC I thought they were correct. I booted my PC up and checked the portable hard drive on Windows. When viewed on my PC the pictures all have the correct time and date assigned to them. However when I plug the same portable hard drive into my Mac the same files show up as being created on a more recent date (say 20th Jan 2013).
I’ve done a lot of research last night, although I can find no forum with this exact problem, I feel it must have something to do with compatibility. The portable hard drive is FAT32, and I am assuming that in order to ensure all of the photos information is transferred correctly in needs to be NTFS.
The problem I have is how do I transfer my files again from my PC to an NTFS drive, whilst keeping all of the correct date and time information assigned to the photos. My understanding is that the 2 aren’t compatible.
Has anyone ever had this problem? It mainly seems to be with photos I have extracted from my Iphone or edited in some form by rotating them.
I have a 13" Macbook Pro Retina with OSX Mavericks installed.

What you may want to do is archive as a Zipfile the photos and then transfer them to the Mac.     It is possible some of the metadata is being lost on the FAT32 formatting.    USB Flashdrive might work better than a FAT32 formatted hard drive, as I do know that most USB Flashdrives are formatted about the same as SD media cards, which manage to preserve the data when copied from camera to Mac.    My big question is, do you still have the photos on media cards?  You might just want to get a media card reader on your Mac, if the photos are not on SD cards, and transfer them over with the media card reader.
I do believe Retina MacBook Pros all have SD card readers built-in.
Note: I've asked this be moved to the MacBook Pro forum.  MacBook without the secondary name refers to the consumer notebook Apple stopped making in 2011.

  • Meta Data is very sensitive , Yes ? or No !

Hi , for some reason the answer to the question of what occasionally
happens to the meta data when moving from library to library appears
to be rather obscure with the fix it all shoulder shrug of - corrupted files
taking the place of a sure footed recovery . My iTunes coasted along nicely
for at least two years and now seems stuck back to the 2005 Library info
. I would entertain just about any suggestion at this point to recover the
more recent library as it is a bit complicated to reintegrate the massive
load of information . I just cloned libraries and switched discs to open
space on my operating disc . Successful for a long time , now pretty awful .
Any ideas how to recover the data ? Thanks , Frederick

You are not supposed to be able to, on export. However, there
    is a bug
in CS3 where if you SAVE the file first, metadata will be
    retained on
    Export.
Keep in mind this will increase the file size.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes when meta-data is edited

We are using Photoshop CS3 on our G5 Mac running Leopard. When we open any JPG or EPS file and attempt to edit the meta data it crashes Photoshop completely (before we can even attempt to save the file). It does not matter which meta data field we are editing it happens to all of them. Not sure what has changed on the system as we have not done any updates recently. Thought it might be a corrupt preference file but not sure which one to delete? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I can confirm that this is a user preference problem, as there is no problem on a newly created user account. However, deleting the 'obvious' preference files from ~/Library/Preferences (Adobe and Photoshop prefs and plists) has had no effect.
I have moved ALL preference files from ~/Library/Preferences, restarted and relaunched Photoshop. This has resolved the original Photoshop issue. I now have to reapply all of the other user preferences for all other applications/devices. (Resolving the original issue has probably created more work, but at least we can use Photoshop!)
It would be nice to hear if anyone has any idea which preference file may of caused the issue.
    Thanks.

  • JPEG Meta Data

Hi guys, very new here actually just registered.
I have a problem where I need to ID who modified a jpeg file.
    What I know:-
The file was modified in photoshop (I can see that from the meta data. I have opened the jpg file in notepad and can see all the text)
What I need to know is there a way to determine the serial number of the product that modified the jpg file thus traceing back to a machine and then a person.
I can see lots of meta data such as ModifyDate, CreateDate and MetadataDate I can also see many references to adobe web sites.
What I also see is :uuid:xxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx is this the serial number encoded some how
Any help would be great thanx CPM

What do you meen about meta-data??? Can you provide an example.....
i.e. an initial image you have, in what format is in, it's meta-data (as you say ) and what you finally get encoding
