Preventing update of a single column

Hi All,
I'd like to ensure that values in a certain column are never updated, not even by the table owner. I have the following solution, but I'm interested to see if anyone out there has better alternatives. A check constraint solution would be ideal, but I'm not sure if it's possible.

No need to disable anything:
SQL> insert into t t1
  2  (pk, col)
  3  select pk + 100
  4        ,col
  5  from t;

SQL> select *

SQL> delete t
  2  where pk < 100;
2 rows deleted.
SQL> commit;

    Hi All,
    I could not find any answer for this, does it ever matter in terms of performance updating single column versus multiple column in a single update query.
    For eg. table consisting of 15 columns, what would be the difference in performance when one column is update in the single query against another update query where 15 columns are updated.
    Please do keep in mind my table columns in actually could be around 150+.

    If updated columns aren´t on where clause , then the only impact of 15 columns will be a increase on redo generation, and a possible chainning row.
    So since the redo is one of the things that have a large impact, the answer is yes.
    The performance will be slower.

  • Disallow updates on a single column

    I have a table activity log, which contains the columns user_id , old_data , created_date .
    Now I want to impose a restriction on this table, so that all updates on 1st and 2nd columns are allowed but the update on the last column must not be allowed. A record having values for all the three columns will be inserted. However, subsequent updations to the last column must be strictly stopped. First two columns can be updated.
    How to achieve this ?
    I googled for some time but could not find a solution. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

    YOu can create trigger specially when you update the column and raise an application error. You can test following trigger with different scnearios

  • Update a single column of a table

    Hi Champs,
    I want to update a single column of table PA0000.
    Following is ABAp code I am using:
    UPDATE pa0000 SET massn = wa_upd_actn71-massn
                       WHERE pernr = wa_upd_actn71-pernr AND
                              massn = c_crct_entry.
    where in current scenario wa_upd_actn71-massn = 54,
                                         wa_upd_actn71-pernr = 10005092,
                                         c_crct_entry = 71.
    But this code is not working and note updating the DB table PA0000.
    Can you help me out?

    hiii,
    If u want to update it thr program then write the query as update <dbtablename> set fld = value where <condn>. make sure that the values u pass are converted as per the values in database.
    2nd way is goto se16n
    specify table name and then enter &sap_edit on command line. sap editing function will be edited. specify the filter parameters on the field and then execute the transaction. u can change thd data instantly as the data appears in editable alv.

  • Can I update 2(or multiple) columns in a table based on one of update col?

    Hi All,
    I have a table emp:
    empno number
    ,salary number
    ,comm number
    Now, the comm column is always a % of the salary column (but still would like to store the comm in the table as a column).
    Assuming that someone get a salary increment and I need to update the commission as well based on the new salary value, should I still use 2 update statements or is there anyway, I can achive in a single update clause itself?
    example:
    if the old values were:
    =============
    1234 10000 1000
    and if I do the following,
    update emp
    set salary = salary + 3000
    ,comm = salary * 10/100
    where empno = 1234;
    the comm value still points to the old salary value and the table looks like:
    emp:
    ===
    1234 13000 1000
    instead of:
    1234 13000 1300 (10% of the new salary - 13000)
    so, the only way to achieve this is to issue 2 update statements? Or is there any way of achieving in one single update statement? Please let me know.
    Am on Oracle 10.2.0.3.0.

    Or you could create a after update trigger on salary column that updates comm whenever Sal updates.
    What happens if someone else issues an update on salary and forgets to update the commission? Wont you have incorect data then?
    Also, commision is a redundant column . I dont think it is a good idea to have computed values as a separate column.

  • Selecting a single column in SQL

    Hi all,
    I am doign a Java application at the moment and I need to select only a single column in a row of a table.
    I know that I can do something like
    SELECT column_name FROM table
    but the fact is, I am not supposed to know the name of the column, but only its content. The row can be determined by a CUSTOMER_ID and in the row resulting from the SELECT, one of the column has "2" as content.
    I would then like to know how I can build my query to only select this column, because I will then be able to retrieve the column name using the getColumnName() from the ResultSetMetadata.

    OMG, that table isn't even in first normal form. Whoever designed the model for that application needs to get some training. If it were properly normalized, the problem would be simple, as it is you're in a mess (as I'm sure lots of code that tries to use that table is). If it were normalized, the query would look something like this ...
    select status
    from customer_transaction
    where transaction_code = 2;Or even better, transaction code would be more meaningful and have a code table of it's own where you could refer to it with something less obscure than the number 2.
    You could create a view that makes that table appear denormalized using 100 union alls but it wouldn't perform worth a damn. All I can think of is that you'll need to generate a query that looks something like this ...
    select case when tan_1 = 2 then 'STATUS_TAN_1'
    when tan_2 = 2 then 'STATUS_TAN_2'
    when tan_3 = 2 then 'STATUS_TAN_3'
    end
    from tan ...Then you can build your dynamic update using that returned column name.

    atleast u should insert blanks to the other fields.
    inserting a row is possible , inserting single column will not be a normalised table.

  • Yoga 10 HD+ system settings screen annoying single column

    Hi
    Anybody else having annoyances with the system settings screen on the HD+ ?
    I got it with 4.3 (last week) so naturally I updated it to 4.4.2 very fast. Going to system setting under 4.3 it displayed the settings in two columns like you'd expect on a 10" tablet. However on 4.4.2 the setting is displayed on a single column like a mobile phone.
    Quite annoying and I'd like to get the two columns back like it is on all other Android tablets. Anyone has an ide what to try? Believe I've tried almost everything except a reset and I'm more or less clueless about what to try next.

Also on this table i have enabled ALL COLUMNS to be supplimental logged via "alter table SCHEMA_OWNER.RX_TX add supplemental log data (all) columns". The table has a PK on the "ID" column. Please note that the POS_REFUND_DATE column in the table SCHEMA_OWNER.RX_TX is 178th column.

    Hope to get a solution to the above issue. Why no TRAIL records are being created for this 178th column in question. If i do for example the following SQL for a different column say "RETURNED_DATE", when the value of the RETURNED_DATE=NULL before the UPDATE is fired, the TRAIL records are being generated.
    SQL>Update Eps2_Kp_900001058.Rx_Tx Set RETURNED_DATE=RETURNED_DATE Where Tx_Number=1014524 And Nhin_Store_Id=900001058 And Id=4575035;
    SQL>COMMIT;

    This looks like a trailing null issue. Sometimes Oracle decides not to write columns to the redo logs if they are null and they are the last column in the record. What version of Oracle is this? I can ask QA to look into this and see what can be done.

    1) The UPDATE done to a column i.e.POS_REFUND_DATE is NOT THE LAST column of the table=eps2_kp_900001058. Please see the DDL that is in this mail chain. So your observation is not right.
    2) Also the TRAIL records does get generated if the following UPDATE is executed and the value of this column is NOT NULL prior to the firing of this UPDATE
    Update Eps2_Kp_900001058.Rx_Tx Set Pos_Refund_Date=Pos_Refund_Date Where Tx_Number=1014524 And Nhin_Store_Id=900001058 And Id=4575035;

    Also opened an SR for this issue, the SR details are:
    SR 3-7288541301 : TRAIL records are not getting generated for SELECTED UPDATE SQL statements - DB supplimental logging
    4) Also the DB version is 11gR2, 11.2.0.3, 64 bit enterprise edition on AIX

    Hi Experts,
    I got a requirement for displaying 2 rows heading in a single column report. Is it possible that I can perform this task using ALV. How to get this 2 rows in ALV.
    This is a criteria that need to be output in ALV REPORT.

    As mentioned above storage loc and date will be changing with respect to data dynamically and under this double heading qty will be displayed.
    Just want to know how to get double heading. It is clear that how to display dynamically but unaware of double heading using fieldcatalog.

    Please pass row position in fieldcatalogue for the respective columns.
    E.g  MOVE '2' to w_fieldcat-row_pos.  " This will display the field in 2nd row.

    There is no way to this declaratively that I know of. Some alternatives...
    1. Put the conditional branching logic in the report SQL itself. e.g. case when ... then '< a href=..' else '< a href=...' end and make sure the column display type is Standard Report column
    2. Have the declarative column link go to a dummy/intermediate page and setup On Load: Before-Header branches on that page to redirect to the desired page based on the item value(s) passed in to the intermediate page.

    i want like this because in my custom report i need it. Report query has more than 30 column so its not possible to use 30 columns in a group by.

    If you observe below output, column 3 has multiple documents each one separated by ' ; '. Now, I would like to assign hotspot on each documents like DOC1, DOC2, DOC3, etc.
