Preview hangs while viewing PDF (44MByte)

I have a pdf file that always hangs in preview.
Preview often freezes while viewing this pdf file. You can see the spinning rainbow wheel for a good 10 seconds before it resumes working again.
After page 130 or 140 it is really bad. Scrolling not possible.

iMac, quad core i5, 2,7Ghz, 4GB RAM. OS X 10.8.5

I get the same result as you in Preview and in Adobe Reader, I also tried the file in NitroPDF on a Windows machine with the same result.
From these results I suspect a bad file.

  • Preview crashed while printing PDF, now can't get rid of PDF.

Hello, I need some help. The other day, I was making a PDF out of individual images in Preview, and while I was 'printing'/saving it as a PDF, I noticed that it was taking an abnormally long time. Preview then crashed. I tried to open the PDF, which I had saved to my Desktop, but I got (and still get) this error:
+Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize.+
I tried to delete it, so that I could start over again without having the same named file on my desktop, but when I empty the trash, I get the following error:
+The operation cannot be completed because the item "Acts 7.pdf" is in use.+
I would like to get rid of this thing, and make a new file once I redownload the images. Any assistance in deleting this, or at least finding out why it won't open, would be appreciated. Thank you!

If you tap on the PDF you should get a Done button appear at the top left of the screen

  • Indesign hang while exporting PDF

I'm trying to export a high quality PDF for my publisher. It's an Indesign book with 14 chapters. I've exported it many times before for preview. It always hangs on the same page; every time. I've tried changing the illustrations on that page from .ai to .PDF. Same thing.
Funny thing is that when I export the chapter separately, it works fine.  What else could it be that is causing this book to quit exporting on the same page every time?

If you are able to export in pieces (as in the chapter exports alone), but not all together, it most likely is a system resources problem. It sometimes works to close ID and reopen, then do the export as the first operation. You can also combine individual PDFs into a single file using Acrobat.

  • Message that appears while viewing PDF

Whenever I view a PDF file, this message appears:  "Adobe Reader has not been able to check for updates recently.  Check online to see if solutions are available.  What does this mean?

I get the same result as you in Preview and in Adobe Reader, I also tried the file in NitroPDF on a Windows machine with the same result.
From these results I suspect a bad file.

  • Firefox crashes (hangs) while printing pdf (or xps)

Firefox crashes/hangs whenever I try to print pdf using Adobe Acrobat V9.5. I updated Acrobat to XI but the problem didn't go away. It crashes the same way when I try to print to xps as well.
I have to force close the browser and I see Acrobat (or XPS) conversion dialog stuck somewhere at middle afterwards.
I don't have problem printing to pdf from other applications including other browsers (Chrome and IE9). Uninstall/reinstall (complete removal including profile), reset, disabling all addons and extensions, none of these worked. Although the problem goes away when I use Firefox in safe mode. What could be the problem here? I tried disabling all addons and extensions without luck.
I saw similar problem in another thread (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/994052?esab=a&as=aaq) which says it got solved after updating to V29. But I have this problem at office where I use ESR release channel currently at V24.6.
Can anyone confirm that this is a Firefox bug and has been fixed in V29? If so I can wait until next month when ESR channel jumps to V31.
    PS: I use Windows 7.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion or help.
    Peace

Try toggling the status of hardware acceleration under Options → Advanced → General, then restart Firefox.

If there's no problem in Safe Mode, that suggests an issue with an add-on, a preference or a file in the profile, or hardware acceleration. Since you've already ruled out the other two, hardware acceleration is all that's left to try.

For me, Firefox will simply not print to XPS, though Internet Explorer doesn't have any trouble. Others have reported hanging when text is pasted into the "Save As" dialog. I haven't seen any reports of crashes, though that may be specific to the older version of Firefox you're using.
''Feel free to vote for the report to keep track of any progress, but please don't post comments unless you have technical information to add. See [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html the Bugzilla etiquette page] for details.''

  • Download and then open PDFs with Preview instead of viewing PDFs within Safari

hello, I am running Safari 6.0.2 and since this update PDF files are automatically opened within Safari. This seems to be a new feature. In my older version of Safari whenever I clicked a pdf it was downloaded to my "Downloads" folder and then automatically opened with Preview. The option open "safe" files after downloading in Safari -> Preferences -> General is ticked. So as soon as a download a PDF file it should automatically be opened with Preview. However, I cannot figure out how to download a PDF file from a google link. I googled and people suggested to use alt + mouse click on the google search result link to download the PDF. However, whenever I tried this instead of downlading the PDF file it downloads a .html file which is then apparently not opened. Also using the option "download linked file" or "download linked file as" only downloads a url.html file and not the PDF. I searched and searched for any possible solutions but cannot find any. I am really suprised that no one has yet really complained about that. Any ideas of how to fix that problem?

I had a similar probem after updating to the newest Safari -- and I posted that question on the forum this morning.  Like you, I didn't have any adobe plug-ins.  then I read another post that made sense:
find a pdf document that you know opens in Preview. Do a command-I on that document's icon.  Then you'll see 1/2 way down an item that says "open with Preview" - click on the arrow beside that, then beside it you'll see "use this application to open all documents like this one"  Under that, you'll see "change all" -- and it will change all pdfs to automatically open with Preview instead of Adobe. From then on Safari worked perfectly
Then I wondered why I didn't have the Adobe plug-in that people were telling me to disable - so I downloaded Adobe Reader again - looked in the library and sure enough there was the plug-in - so I went ahead and disabled the Adobe pdf plug-in (by dumping it in the trash).
so far so good -- first time that Safari 6.02 has worked for me since I installed it.

  • Preview hangs while trying to open old multiple files

    Hello Everyone!
After restarting my Macbook Pro, I opened Preview, it showed all the files I was using  before closing it, but it was frozen. I checked the errors on the Console:
    11/09/12 20:19:55,726 Preview[909]: SCNetworkReachability server not available
    11/09/12 20:19:55,726 Preview[909]: SCNetworkReachability server not available

    11/09/12 20:19:59,721 sandboxd[914]: ([909]) Preview(909) deny system-socket
I researched a bit on the community, but the solution involved moving the com.apple.Preview.plist, and there was no such file in the Preferences folder, I tried searching with the terminal: ls Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist. But there were no results. I couldn't find the .plist files involving the Preview app. I checked opening the app with the Guest User and it works just fine. The problem could be solved if there was a way to eliminate the history and clear the cache of Preview, so that it'd a fresh start. I also tried looking for the cache files involving the Preview app, but there were none.
Thank you very much in advance.

I have solved the issue. Since I couldn't find the files itself, I tried writing the defaults in terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList RecentDocuments {}
    defaults write com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList RecentDocuments ""
Those commands did not solve the issue right away, but after restarting the Macbook, I was able to access Preview again.

  • "Use Local Fonts" setting seems to switch while viewing PDF

I open up a pdf with no embedded fonts, and the text looks fine. Then after a few seconds of paging through the document, all of the sudden the next page is shown with adobe-substituted fonts like "Adobe Serif MM" instead of "ArialNarrow,BoldItalic".
-Using Adobe Reader 8.1 on Windows XP pro, SP2
-Using fairly standard fonts like ArialNarrow, plain, bold, and italic.
-If I close Reader and open the document again, a few seconds later, I go to another page, and the fonts are fine again. This toggles back and forth each time I open Reader.
-Italic fonts are especially heinous looking: instead of being slanted to the right a few degrees, they are slanted to the left about 45 degrees.
-This seems to have started happening after installing some Windows Updates, but I'm not sure whether that is related.
-I'd rather not use embedded fonts due to increased file size.
-I create the pdf using a third-party app. Is there a way I can test the pdf to verify whether it was created correctly?
    -s

This was kind of a confusing post now that I read it again - sorry.
    Anyway, I found the problem:
Arial Narrow version 2.37 was messing everything up. I uninstalled that from my Windows Fonts folder, installed Arial Narrow version 2.35, and now everything looks great again.
(I had to delete the font list and user cache too)

  • Trouble Viewing PDFs in Preview

    Hey all,
I am having trouble viewing PDFs in Preview 4.0 on my MacBook Pro, running Leopard (10.5.1). I can Quick Look the documents from my desktop (or any other folder) fine. However, when I double-click the document to open it in Preview, i get nothing. Preview opens, but does not display the document, or anything for that matter. I even tried to open PDFs from the Preview menu, but to no avail.
I just upgraded the internal hard drive, but everything else seems to be working fine, and this seems like a weird issue to be caused by a laptop upgrade.
Any ideas? I tried Disk Utility, but still nothing.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Have you tried deleting Preview's pref file? It should be located as a ".plist" file under preferences in your library folder.
Find the file "com.apple.Preview.plist" and move it to the trash for the time being. Run Preview again and see if that'll help. If this fixes it you can safely delete the .plist file that's in the trash.
    Good luck.

  • Preview crashes when viewing (clicking) large pdfs

I have a problem viewing large pdfs in Preview (and any other PDF-reader. Same problem with Skim, Adobe Reader, PDFpen). The problem comes when I first click inside of the pdf, to select text for example. If I'm just viewing the pdf passively it scrolls smoothly, but as soon as I click inside of the pdf the app freezes, becomes unresponsive, and I have to force quit. When this freezing happens, Preview uses >2 gb of RAM.
The freezing when clicking inside of the pdf happens in small pdfs also, but only for 1-5 seconds and only the first time I click in it. When I have clicked/selected text for the first time in any pdf that is not too large, the clicks after that are completely smooth.
I have tried repaired disk permissions and deleting the com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist etc. in my Library/Preferences folder.

Same problem--on my mid 2011 MBP but NOT my mid 2010 iMac. It seems like Preview tries to open ALL PDFs--thousands of pages--and gets the spinning beachball. Force Quit shows that it is not responding. I've tried deleting preference files (com.apple.preview), but no luck. The problem has highlighted how much I actually use preview--and left me pretty annoyed!

  • Viewing pdf files side-by-side in Preview.app

I was wondering if Preview allows two PDF files viewed side-by-side like Adobe Reader. That is, under Adobe, when you have two PDF files open, you can go to Windows->Tile->Vertically to place two PDF files side-by-side for easy viewing. I know you can always adjust the size of the Preview window to view the two files side-by-side, but I was just wondering if there is just a button that I can just easy accomplish what adobe can do.
    Thanks,
    Arthur.

  • Cannot scroll while viewing a pdf in mozilla

If I have an acrobat document opened in firefox, I cannot scroll neither in that tab or any other tab. I had just updated the plugin, before that I could scroll only in the tab with the acrobat document. Now I can't scroll anywhere!

Please update to the latest version of Firefox.

Which pdf viewer are you using?
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac).
#In the Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac) window, select the ''Applications'' panel.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right hand side you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.

    Hi guys,
    i've got a little problem.
Everytime i browse with the finder to PDFs it chrashes, while generating PDFs in preview.
Also it takes ages to generate the preview for a PDFs with about 1MB.
any hints and tipps about that problem ?

    Hello sponger:
If no one posts a fix for you, I would consider an archive and install (NOT an erase and install):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Be sure you have a good backup/retreat strategy before you proceed. In my case, I make bootable clones of my iMacs on an external firewire drive using a little program called SuperDuper (www.shirt-pocket.com).

  • I want to use preview to view pdf files without trashing the adobe plug-ins?

Some of the government web sites that I need to visit regularly require me to use firefox and adobe for opening and viewing files. I would like to still be able to use Safari and Preview for opening, viewing and printing files from other web sites. Before the latest adobe update this was no problem, but now Adobe seems to have taken control over the viewing and printing settings so that even though I try printing from a Safari viewer window I get an Adobe message that this is not supported. I tried to search for an answer as I suppose I am not the only one having this problem after the most recent Adobe update. Thanks for your great help everyone. /Christian
