Preview - missing TOC

I apologize if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find anything with search.
I downloaded a huge PDF file and, as is my habit, right clicked and selected "Open with Preview". Everything was great until I did a SAVE AS (with defaults). Then the Table of Contents disappeared; even the button to show it was gone. I tried quitting Preview and reopening the file. Same deal, no TOC. Acrobat was the same. Saving the page right from Safari and then using Preview to open it works ok; the TOC appears normally. What am I missing?
Here's the URL, but be warned it's huge!
http://www.unna.org/unna/apple/documentation/developer/ProgrammersGuideOS2.0.pdf
iMac 17   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   Preview Version 3.0.8 (409)

Let's cut the BS.
***THIS IS A BUG.****
The reason very few people report it is that 99.99% of the victims never realised it happened. If you download a pdf it is stored in /tmp and opens by default in Preview. You then immediately do a 'Save as' if you want to keep it. That destroys the TOC if there is one. The user does not notice because they never knew there was a TOC! Hence no bug reports.
I only noticed because I pulled down a 13MB 2500 page document which took a significant time to process and I watched the TOC vanish in front of my eyes.
I have wondered for months why very few of my downloaded pdfs seemed to have TOCs. Now I know why.
I have reproduced this on two different machines, a PowerMac G5 and a MacBook Pro Core Duo. It is a rock solid reproducible bug.

  • Previews missing at catalog and drive level.  Unable to use filters at this level.  Missing folders.

Using LR4 (not 4.1) and Win7 Home Premium.
Catalog had been upgraded from LR3 and  LR4 catalog was working fine until now. I've been using LR since the begining.
Two problems, probably related.  106K photos over two drives, almost 3Tb.
At the catalog level, there are no previews.  Normally previews of all 106K photos would be displayed. Message is "Click the "import" button to begin."  Filter function does not work Message:  "No photos match the filter"
At the drive level, there are no previews.  Message is "No photos in selected folder" Filter function does not work Message:  "No photos match the filter"
At the folder level, everything is fine, except two folders give the same message "No photos in selected folder"  Filter function does not work in these two folders: Message:  "No photos match the filter"  14K photos between the two bad folders
Dozens, hundreds, of other folders and subfolders are fine. Filter function works fine at folder and subfolder level.
Collections are fine, including photos in the two folders giving the mesage "No photos in selected folder"
    What I've done:
    uninstalled and reinstalled LR4 twice.
    Downloaded and installed clean LR4.
    Same problems
Tried to import the missing folders.  Won't import because they're already in the catalog.  Won't import even if I uncheck "Don't import suspected duplicates"
Exported as a catalog one of the "No photos in selected folder" folders.  It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc.  I edited a few photos with no problems.  Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing.  But they seem to be there anyway.
Deleted the folder from the catalog and imported from catalog the working folder catalog that I just created.
    Same problems.
Exported as a catalog  the other "No photos in selected folder" folder.  Same result as the first bad folder.  I.e. It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc.  Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing.  But they seem to be there anyway.
Haven't done anything with this second folder catalog.  Intriguing, the same message about missing previews.
The actual files and *.xmp files are in the bad folders.
    Now what?

Discovered a thread in this forum.  Known problem solved by 4.1 beta.  Upgraded to LR4.1 and problem solved.

  • Some Aperture Previews Missing in Mail Chooser

I am running Aperture 3.2.3 with the current version of Lion. Tonight I wanted to e-mail some pictures via the Mail app. In the photo chooser in the Mail app, however, not all of the Aperture previews show up. For the particular project from which I wanted choose the pictures to send, some, but not all previews appear in the chooser. The missing previews were neither the first, nor the last, pictures added to the project. In Aperture preferences, "always" share with iLife and iWork is checked. Any idea why some pictures, but not all, would show up in the mail photo chooser?

I have the same problem, failing to receive pdf attachments intermittently using Mail 5.2 running OS X 10.7.3 (Lion), and not being counted among the attachments
Two times where I'm aware it happened, the sender had replied and included the attachments I had sent in my original message, and I'm wondering if those attachments somehow led to their own attachments not displaying and not even being counted in the e-mail window.  "3 Attachments, 317 KB" displayed, but those were my three; clicking the "Save" drop-down menu listed only those 3 attachments of mine.  In one case, I had them resend their attachments as a new e-mail, and that worked.  Their 2 attachments totalled 941 KB, so Mail missed rather a lot by displaying just 317 KB.

  • Missing TOC Book in Merged WebHelp

It's late on a Friday, and I'm brain dead. I am using a merged WebHelp structure (based on Peter Grainge's model with parent project only having one topic and using redirect to first child project) for my company's disaster recovery plan (separate department plans plus a master company plan). I recently added a new department plan. When I generate the merged help, the new department plan (Marketing) appears in the TOC but another one that should be there (Underwriting) is not showing up. Does this have to do with the length of the TOC? Seems like I recall having a problem with long TOC's before (in another job and project) but not sure if that's the issue or not.
Any guidance on where to troubleshoot would be appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunately, I do have the same problem in Firefox. Just to clarify, I'm not viewing the merged plan in SharePoint; I am generating and viewing it locally on my C: drive. Copying to SharePoint is the last thing I do, so I haven't even gotten to that point yet, and when I do it, I delete all files on the server and copy all files again to it.
I tried regenerating AND publishing all of the plans to my C: drive (separate locations with same folder structure). I can either get the Marketing plan to show up or the Underwriting plan but not both at the same time.
Here is screen shot of the parent file TOC. They are all there. What am I missing? Have you encountered this issue before on the forum? I tried searching but couldn't find a situation that exactly matched mine. The Marketing plan only has 18 topics in it with 6 folders in the project file. The Underwriting plan has 33 topics in it with 6 folders in project file.
However, the IT plan, which comes before those two, has 226 topics and 7 folders, some of which have multiple levels of sub-folders going 3 or 4 levels down. I can send you screen shots of the structure, if you like. It's the most complicated one of the bunch. I've got to get this resolved as I am supposed to publish 1Q updates this week. And of course, I can't merge any additional department plans until I can determine where the problem lies.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • RH7 WebHelp Output Missing TOC, Index, Search

I updated my RH6 HTML project to RH7 HTML. When I publish,
everything looks good. I uploaded all project files to my company's
server, and a coworker saved those files to her computer. When my
coworker publishes WebHelp from her computer, the TOC, Index, and
Search components are missing. Can anyone assist? Thank you!

Thank goodness I found this thread!
I'm having the exact same issue. I'm using version 5.0.2 of
RoboHelp, and when I generate WebHelp (the collection of HTML
files) and test it on my PC, it works fine. When I copy the files
over to my company's server, my TOC is missing, Serch is missing,
    Index is missing.
I tested this with other PCs in my company, and some display
the content fine (from the server location), others don't.
I noticed that I get an error message "flash" at the bottom
of IE when I mouse over the TOC frame. It states "Load: class
WebHelp not found". I've double checked, and all of the files that
are generated on my PC are also in the same folder that I copied
    over to the server.
Could RoboHelp be having issues with certian servers, or
versions of IE w/ certain servers? This doesn't seem to be a
blanket issue with all users of this information, only some.

  • Preview missing -  no menubar clock - System Prefs won't open....help!

Wow. Preview is missing (it shows up in the Application window as a zero K app, then when I click on it, it vanishes), all the Preview docs I had on my desktop are neutral icons ( just a white rectangle), and also my menubar clock is gone. System Preferences won't open. Help! I've tried repairing permissions but that's as far as I know what to do. Thanks, Chris

Wow, I feel a tiny bit proud of myself. And actually, Disk Warrior eventually helped,in a circuitous way. I reloaded the Combo Update for 10.3.9, that seemed to rejuvenate Preview. But still no System Prefs, no menubar clock. I right-clicked on System Preferences ( that
right-click or option-click is really useful sometimes, because it can open
packages and other single-icon deals that you can't see into otherwise - I
really recommend a 2-button mouse, I was resistant to it after 20 years of Mac-ing but the 2 buttons combined
with a scroll wheel is way better than the Apple mouse and the Dell mouse
is about 10 bucks on eBay)... once that was cracked, there was a Terminal
icon which I clicked on... wwhich indicated that there was a
pref file it couldn't find. When I searched for it with Find, there it was
in the 'REscued Items" folder from DiskWarrior. Dropped it in where the
Terminal readout indicated it was missing, and voila! A restart, and I
have System Prefs again and a menubar clock. The only thing still FU is
that shift-3 isn't working to get a snapshot of the screen so in order to
generate a PDF from the screen I have to use Grab and finagle there. I
have a feeling, though, that I'll find a way to fix it now. And as you
know, sometimes these things weirdly self-correct after a while, a few
dozen restarts, whatever. At any rate if that's all that I have to contend
with it's not a big deal. So -= DW helped in the end! Thanks to the respondents on this issue- C

  • Adobe Content Viewer (desktop preview) Missing with latest update (v.8.0.9.23)

InDesign CS6 just promted me to update my Folio software and now my Adobe Content Viwer is missing.
When I try to preview a Folio, I get the following error message:
    Has anyone had this problem?

I deleted the the file recommended by Matt:
Try closing the app, deleting the following directory to clear the app's saved data, and then restarting:
    Mac:  /Users/{username}/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.dmp.contentviewer
But the Problem seems rooted in the fact that the APP itself has disappeared from my Applications. I know it use to be there before. Can I download the APP again from Adobe?

  • RH10 Missing TOC when viewed using IE11

I have generated webhelp using RH10.  The webhelp works fine with both Firefox and Chrome but when I display the webhelp from my local machine using IE11 the TOC is missing.
    Here is a screenshot.
I also notice that the index is missing as well.

RH10 webhelp in IE11 does not work and is a known bug that has been reported to Adobe.
If you run the developer tools in IE11 (F12 key), select the Emulation Tab and change Document Mode from Edge (default) to 10, you will find your webhelp displays correctly.
This is something that MS has introduced in IE11. However, no one has yet suggested a way to make this setting "stick" once the developer tools are closed.
Report this issue as a bug to Adobe - the more users report it, the earlier Adobe may start working on a fix.
There is another work around, forcing IE11 to open the site in an earlier version emulation mode, but apparently this causes problems for users of IE whose version is not the same as the forced mode.
Have a look at earlier posts on this forum about this subject.

  • GTK control previews missing

I just installed a GTK theme from gnome-looks.org and now whenever I go to System>Preferences>Appearance the Bug Reporting tool pops up asking me to submit a bug report. Then if I try to customize a theme, I find that all the previews under Controls, Window Border, and Icons are missing.
How might I go about fixing the problem / restoring those? I'd try to delete the theme I just installed, but I can't. Any time I highlight it the window refreshes and move my selection back to the first theme.
    [edit]
I'd even just be happy to find the absolute path where the themes get stored so that I can manually remove the offending theme.

    Ah, it was ~/.themes.
Finally, I can open "Appearances" without it complaining at me. Thanks.

  • Missing TOC books & topics in RH Server output -- is there a fix??

    RH9, RH Server 9,WebHelp Pro
I've seen a post a few months old now reporting the problem of nested books and topics not showing up in WebHelp Pro RH9 Server output even though they display fine in the local output before and after publication.
Has there been a fix for this?
I have a large project, over 400 topics,  and it seems to affect books that are nested at level 4 and below. I have a level 3 book with several level 4 books inside it. The published output shows only the first level 4 book, and its contents, but then it omits the remaining level 4 books in that group and jumps to the next level 3 book.
This is not a merged project.
When I run the TOC report, all content is shown correctly in the report.

Hi. Sorry you're having glitches. While I research my notes from similar situations, I offer these  things worth looking at:
    1. This is a Knowlege Base article with a download that may help:
Books, topics missing from TOC | WebHelp Pro output | RoboHelp Server 8, 9
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/904/cpsid_90498.html
    2. Take a look at this thread (in particular, Message #10):
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3691553#3691553
I don't remember offhand but I think there may indeed be a limit of three "nested books" in a TOC, although I just experimented with this and I found it worked down to 6 or 7  nests.
    3. I know in the past I have noticed that sometimes the culprit has been an oddball "illegal" character or space in a subfolder or filename. One client found that an exclamation point in a filename was a problem.
    4. To be clear, remember that WebHelp (not Pro) has some very important differences from RoboHelp Server (Pro) output. Also, understand that when you view WebHelp Pro locally (i.e. View Results) you are not getting a fully accurate picture. Often, you must view the project from the RoboHelp Server to truly see the results.
    5. With regard to Search. I have found in some cases that ticking the "Automatically Merge Projects of the Same Type" helps even though you only have one project!
    6. I have found that a project that has been "renamed" can cause the server's configuration to be choke on the new name as it looks for the old one.
Let me know if any of this helps. If it does not, I'd suggest you zip up your Tomcat Log files and send them to me. I'll ask the Adobe folks if they could take a look.
    You can find them here:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0\logs
Because they might be large, you might just send the most recent day's worth.
I realize this is a "dump" of so many possibilities but it's the weekend and I know you must be frustrated so I thought I'd pass along all ideas no matter how remote.

  • Missing TOC icons in MMC snap-in

Working on the help for a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in application. The merge goes well, and the help itself is fine. The interesting/perplexing part is that if you click on a Help button inside the application, the default TOC book and page icons do not appear. Pressing F1 brings the help up, with the appropriate icons. As required by the MMC, the TOC is binary compiled.
Here's what the TOC looks like when called from a Help button:
Not certain if this is relevant, but this issue was first noted in the company bug database back in 2005, where it was noted that "A binary table of contents is populated based on user demand. For example, in a table of contents where a book is located within another book, the second level book will not be populated until a user clicks it. (Microsoft)"
I am using RoboHelp 8, and the project was imported with settings intact. Is there anything to be done, either inside RH8 or by the developer?
Thanks in advance for all suggestions.
    Mike

    Hi, Mike,
When I open the .hhc file for the MMC 3.0 Help file in Notepad, I see that none of the TOC styles is explicitly set there. In other words, the five TOC styles that are checked in my screenshot are simply the defaults that are implemented when the Help author has not selected any of the available styles. For what it's worth, this is what you would see at the start of your .hhc file if you have explicitly set the same five TOC styles:
       <OBJECT type="text/site properties">
         <param name="Window Styles" value="0x800025">
       </OBJECT>
where 0x800025 is the sum of the five selected TOC styles (each one has a unique hexadecimal value). In the .hhc file for the MMC Help file, this line is missing.
Here is an old message in which I explained what the hexadecimal value is of each style:
    http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.helpauthoring/msg/e88393893f0d6c02?hl=en
As you probably know, the binary TOC format supports a very limited set of authoring features, compared to the non-binary TOC format. When you switch to a binary TOC, most of the styles that you might use in a non-binary TOC are unavailable. Still, the binary TOC format does support book and page icons.
Perhaps it might help to test your MMC snap-in with a different Help file, created with a tool other than RoboHelp (FAR in this case). I've uploaded a Help file with a binary TOC to the following location:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/292153651/Binary_TOC_Sample.zip.html
If you were to give this file the name of your own file and drop it into the location where MMC expects to find it, you may be able to determine whether the fault lies in the Help file or in the code that your snap-in uses.

  • Preview missing fonts

I noticed that a lot of my fonts are missing from the font list in the tools set on preview for maveriks and yosemity? any body knows why is that? one in particular that i know is missing is a .ttf font, might this be the reason or is it the location of the font (/Users/username/Library/Fonts/Font.TTF)?
    It is quite frustrating.

You could then try to reinstall Preview from the OS X disks. Download Pacifist. Put your OS X install disk in the drive and click the button in Pacifist to "Open Apple Install Disks". Once it's done reading it, or them in, find the Preview application by expanding the folders presented. You are of course looking for the one in the Applications folder.
Highlight the Preview app and click on the Install button at the upper left. Pacifist will extract, verify and install Preview, replacing the old copy on the hard drive. Eject the OS X disk.
Keep Pacifist open and do the same with the 10.5.4 Combo update file. If there's an update to Preview, you'll need to install that, too. It will also appear as Preview.app. When you click the Install button in Pacifist, it will tell you that Preview already exists and give you multiple choices. You want to click the "Update" button.
You can of course get to the same point by performing an Archive and Install, but this will take far less time and only replace the one application.
