Preview not rendering PDF correctly

I have an invoice sent to me that wont display in Preview. If I view in Chrome, or in Adobe reader, I can see the correct text.
Anyone with any clues as to what is wrong?

I have the same problem. Reading the discussions, it appears that many people have had this problem going back for years. Apple does not seem interested in fixing it.

  • Preview not rendering PDF accurately

I have PDF documents that I have downloaded and can view them perfectly in Adobe Reader 9.3.2. When I try to view the same PDF in Preview or PDFpen the text show missing or as random symbols.
I have already validated my fonts using the OSX Font Book utility and dealt with duplicate fonts but the issue persists. OSX 10.6.3
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Tom

Recently .pdf documents I view in Preview show up scrambled. I can see those documents fine in Adobe Reader. All I see in preview a few black lines. Other documents show up just fine. I guess I have similar issue that the user posted here originally. I'm not sure how to fix it. Should I delete "cache" of some sort?

  • HTML mail preview not rendering correctly on EAS mobile clients

I'm having trouble pinning down an issue I'm having with the previews of e-mails that contain HTML on ActiveSync clients specifically iOS Mail clients. Clients are seeing HTML code in the message body previews...
    Example 1: "[cid:google][cid:profilephoto] Hello..."
Example 2: "[https://statici.icloud.com/emailimages/v4/common/[email protected]] Dear User..."
When the user opens the message, everything is rendered fine (the previews remain the same though). I don't believe it's anything wrong on the client. The same messages delivered through Gmail on the client are previewed like this:
Example 1: "Hello User. You have successfully reset your password..."
Example 2: "Dear User. The following information for your Apple ID..."
I've tested with exchange servers outside the organization and the previews are rendered correctly (like Gmail). I don't know what version of Exchange the servers were running, but it leads me to believe this is not an outstanding bug between iOS
and Exchange; it's something specific to my server.
The issue is present for all users. I'm running Exchange Server 2007 SP3 and the client I'm experiencing the issue on is iOS 8.1.2.
    Thanks!

You can refer this page http://www.campaignmonitor.com/css/ shows
many things that do not work in different clients.I think Someone needs to re-code
the HTML form to make it work in the current versions of Outlook. You can try formatting with text and HTML and see the results.

  • Preview not opening pdf documents

Why would Preview not open a pdf document?
I double click on a document and Preview starts but the document does not open. I can open the document in Safari. I have other user accounts and the same document is working properly in all of them. The sharing & permissions looks like it is correct showing me to have Read & Write privileges.

Thanks, slug. I might have been born at night but it wasn't last night. I tried that and it still isn't working. When I did the repair permissions I did notice though that there were, literally, pages and pages and pages of "ACL found but not expected" lines in tons of System and hidden folders. I mean, repair permissions took almost 3 hours!! What's up with that?

  • Preview not showing characters correctly

I've noticed that the vast majority of the time, Preview doesn't properly render special or "foreign" characters. Up / down arrows to denote increases or decreases in items appear as black blocks, and Greek characters do something similar ("µg" renders as " g" with a black block or blank space where the µ should be.)
The same exact PDF renders properly in Adobe Reader. But I don't much care for Reader.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I saw the same behavior on my previous OS X install.

Greek characters and upward / downward arrows to denote an increase or decrease in something frequently render as a gradient "box" in Preview, but appear correctly elsewhere.
There are often problems with that stuff because of different encodings used by different "symbol" fonts. Hopefully everyone will eventually use Unicode and these will go away.
This is a bit of a problem considering that Preview >> Reader for PDFs on OS X, in my opinion.

  • Why is Preview not displaying fonts correctly?

Since the last Snow Leopard upgrade, Preview is not displaying some fonts correctly. I checked to see if the fonts were embedded in the PDF (by resorting to Adobe Acrobat 5... which is not displaying them correctly either) and they are True Type with Windows encoding which as far as I know Preview OS X should be able to handle.
I tried deleting the Preview preferences in User/Library/Prefeerences and restarting but this made no difference. The same PDF works perfectly though on an old iMac that is running OS X Tiger!!!

Well I found a few minor font problems which seem to have cropped up since the last system upgrade, but none of those were the font in question. Also, as I understand it, the whole point of PDF documents is that the fonts are embedded in the document so you do not have to have the fonts installed on your computer to view the PDF properly. I use a lot of special fonts and when I save documents as a PDF I can send them to anyone on the internet and they can usually see everything as it is meant to be.

  • Reader Plug-in not printing PDFs correctly after InDesign Install on Mac OS 10.9.5

Installed InDesign trial yesterday. Ever since, no matter what browser I use, if I try to print PDFs from a browser, if the pages are in portrait mode, it will display them in portrait mode within the browser, but when I go to print them, the page appears in landscape and the bottom of each page does not print. It doesn't matter whether I select portrait or landscape mode. The page in the preview does not rotate. Some of the websites I use do not allow saving of a PDF, only viewing it in my browser window, so I can't save and use Preview to try to print it.
    HELP!

Are you using Adobe Reader or Apple Preview to print PDFs?
You should not use Apple Preview to do anything with PDFs as it is not a reliable PDF viewer. Use Adobe Acrobat or Reader for PDFs only.
Do you have installed any PDF plugins? On the Apple PDFs are shown without any plugins because their graphic engine Quartz is based on PDF, but it does not support completely every PDF standard, so it is better to use Adobe Acrobat or Reader. (But Apple Preview has been improved in the newest upgrades from Apples OS, so it is much better than before.)

  • Preview not opening pdf files unless they have an pdf extension

Preview will not open pdf that does not have a pdf extension. If I give a valid pdf file a random extension like .xxx, preview opens without windows. If I give it .jpg it opens with a questionmark in a window. If I give it pdf it open without a glitch.
Why cannot Preview detect whether a file is open-able or not an not give a **** about extension. This is not windows but a unix system
The problem exist when a pdf file is downloaded by firefox and not given a .pdf extention in the downloads folder. In Safari the file is opened without problems inside Safari.

Yeah, but Preview wont open the file at all, even through the open dialog, all files not associated with preview are greyed out. Shouldn't a program open a file if told to?
Yes, I agree with you. I also could not open the files unless I changed their extensions.
Also the "file" command has no problem finding out it's a pdf. I believe its an obsolete thing specifying filetype on extension, and not on content. Is is possible to get preview to open the file depending on content and not on extention.
Like I said, I think this was a conscious choice that Apple made with OS X, but I'm not sure why the decided to go that way (maybe posting on one of the dev lists would give you the answer to that).
I haven't been able to get Preview to open files once I've changed the file extension...

  • Preview not showing PDFs properly

I am having major problems reading PDF files, On a snow leopard mac they work fine, but on my leopard mac it doesn't read them properly. Characters go missing etc. They load fine in Adobe Reader. See Attachment.
    http://web.mac.com/andrew.robinson/AndrewRobinson/image.png

Preview uses 3 configuration, or .plist, files. Sometimes .plist files can become corrupt which can mess up an application. With Preview not loaded, find them in library/preferences and rename them: com.apple.preview.plist, com.apple.preview.bookmarks.plist, and com.apple.preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist. When you bring up Preview next time, it will create the default versions of the files. If Preview now works, drag the renamed files to the trash and empty the trash.

  • After installing/uninstalling Adobe, Preview not opening PDFs

I installed Adobe Reader 8 just to be able to read one lousy document on the Internet. (It would not open past a screen that said I needed 8.0).
I noticed that it noticeably slowed the opening of ALL pdf documents from the Internet -- Preview was much faster. I deleted Adobe Reader from the Apps folder, but all pdfs are STILL NOT opening with Preview anymore and they're still all slow to open. I tried putting Preview on the doc--didn't work.
What can I do to get rid of Adobe and restore Preview as the default?
    Thanks!

Interesting! A combination of the two suggestions worked!
I did a right-click with my mouse, went into "Open with" and "Other" then choose Preview and checked "Always Open With." This worked with the pdf files only on my computer, but not for pdfs off the Internet.
Then, per the first suggestion, I deleted just that one plug-in and Internet pdfs now open with Preview as well! Just what I wanted!
Now I feel confident about deleting Adobe. Thanks you two!!!

  • Mac Preview does not save PDFs correctly

When I try to save a webpage as a PDF using the Print dialog box on my Mac, ("Save as PDF"), the PDF is distorted. The first page is OK but on the second page, the text displays in a larger font and the text is cut off on the right. Apple tech says this is a browser problem, as it does not happen with Safari.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Preview not displaying PDF form properly

Hi, I volunteer at a high school where there are macs installed. The students are trying to fill out their FAFSA form which I have downloaded from the Dept of Education's website. It displays properly inside Acrobat Reader for both Windows and Mac. The answer fields are set up as boxes, one letter for each box. In Acrobat Reader, you can fill out the form, and the each letter would appear inside each box. But when we open it up in Preview, which is what the school is using by default, the boxes disappear, and filling out the forms make them look like they're regular text input fields.
The PDF file is here: http://www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov/docs/colorEnglish_fafsa2009-2010.pdf
I don't want to have to install Acrobat Reader on these Macs because I don't want to mess with the school's computers like that. Is there a way we can get Preview to open up this file and have it display properly? I have Acrobat Pro at home, if I need to do something to "convert" or "fix" the file, I can.
    Thank you!

I have also had problems with PDFs in Preview recently. Some PDFs created by Acrobat Pro don't display correctly. One document I received recently was full of grey squibbles in Preview. I opened it in Acrobat Pro and everything was as it should be. This has happened several times now.
However I don't want to open Acrobat Pro just to read a PDF, so I have, despite resistance, installed Acrobat Reader. It loads very quickly, so it's not like the old Acrobat used to be. It is basically an acceptable solution. Hopefully Apple will address this issue soon.

  • Preview not displaying fonts correctly - Only question marks

I'd like to report a problem we are experiencing viewing or printing the PDFs using Preview.
We receive regularly PDF files from one of our clients that are created using PDF-XChange (on Windows Computers). The files are on PDF standard 1.4 and include the font Calibri (embedded on the PDF file and also installed on my MacBook Pro)
On opening the files (in Lion) in Preview app. I only see question marks instead of the text.
However these PDFs open correctly using Adobe Reader on the same machines.  The files also display correctly on iPhone, iPad, windows PCs, and on other Macs running Snow Leopard. This problems started to happen after we migrated to Lion (we could, and still can, open the files on macs running snow leopard).
In Preview.app I can copy the "question marks" and past in text edit, where they do appear correctly!

  • Preview not opening PDF's in Safari

I had a trial version of Adobe Acrobat and since it's expired and I've removed it Preview won't open PDF's that I find in Safari like it used to, instead I get a dialogue box asking to find the Acrobat plugin (I've deleted it, oops).
I have Preview as my default PDF reader (command and 'I' when a PDF is selected confirms this) but can't fathom out why it won't open PDF's direct from the net.
It's getting to be a pain saving each PDF and opening it off the desktop so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Oops!! In my last post I used "dashboard" instead of "Dock". Sorry about that. I am new to the Mac. Here is my last post with the appropriate terminology.
"This worked for me as well. The procedure I had to do to make it finally work after I deleted the Adobe plugin from "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins" (I didn't have the file in my account folder), was to quit Safari on the "DOCK" (not just closing the browser window - for us former Windows users). Then I had to empty the trash. When I had initially moved the plug-in to the trash and had not actually quit Safari from the "DOCK", Safari was still accessing the plug-in.
Once I quite the program, emptied the trash, and restarted Safari, though, I was back in business!!!!"

  • Print preview not showing values correctly. (single words are omitted)

    Hi,
When viewing print preview of ME23n , it does not shows the values correctly.
    It omitting the single words.
If its having 2 or more words, it displaying correctly
    For example;
This is the vendor & its address.  (check attached image img1.jpg)
    ZERANDIB BUSINESS APPLIANCES
    Number-122/A
    PO BOX 41,112,REID AVENUE
    COLOMBO-04
When displaying the print preview, it shows only some parts of the above address
Shows only; (check attached image img2.jpg)
    ZERANDIB BUSINESS APPLIANCES
    PO BOX 41,112,REID AVENUE
These values are getting from a table called LFA1. I have checked that table & in that table all the values exists correctly.
I have noted issue is with, having only a single word. (If address or name having only a single word, that is without spaces, it will not going to show in the print preview) -
In the above example, it is not showing Number-122/A and  COLOMBO-04 (Its a single word. No spaces there)
If its like --> Number - 122/A   &  COLOMBO - 04 ,  then it will display in the print preview correctly (where there are spaces after - mark)
    check img3.jpg
    If its having more than one word, then it will display correctly in the print preview.  As below;
    ZERANDIB BUSINESS APPLIANCES
    Number - 122/A
    PO BOX 41,112,REID AVENUE
    COLOMBO - 04
Any ideas how to resolve this issue?
Is there any thing to do with printer settings & configurations / netweaver admin point of view?
    Best Regards.
    Zerandib

    Hi Zerandib,
By the way , since its a standard program, i think that code is out of our scope.
Me23N is a standard tcode but cusomters create Z-Program for printing by making a copy of standard.
You may please check upon the same.
Is it possible to check the results on a system where patch has not been applied ?
    Regards,
    Deepak Kori
