Primary key contraint alteration

Hi
I have a table XX with Primary key (sno, serial name, headerid)
I have other table YY which references this table XX with foreign key on above 3 columns
Now i want to alter the primary key on XX as (sno, headerid), i.e now i want the uniqueness on only two columns not on all three columns,
Can i directly alter the primary key on XX or should i drop the foreign key on YY and drop the Primary key
on XX and then recreate the primary key on XX using alter option and recreate the foreign key on YY
Can you please send me the syntax
Thanks,

ALTER TABLE XX DROP PRIMARY KEY CASCADE;
ALTER TABLE XX ADD PRIMARY KEY(SNO,HEADERID);
-- Recreate your foreign key here --

    Hi,
    I dropeed the Primary key and recreated it with an additional column, but I am getting "name already used by an existing object error". Please advise.

  • Difference between alter table statements to add primary keys

    Hi,
    Can someone explain what the difference between these 2 statements are and if & when one should be used over the other?
    Also, are the brackets around the column name necessary?
    Thanks!
    ALTER TABLE xyz ADD CONSTRAINT id_pk PRIMARY KEY (id);
    ALTER TABLE xyz ADD PRIMARY KEY (id);

    Hi,
    As every one has explained that there is no difference in the actual functioning of the two constraints except that the first statement will create Primary Key constraint with user defined name as id_pk whereas in the second statement Primary key will be created with system generated name like SYS....
    Normally name for the constraints are needed when you are working on constraints like need to enable or disable the constraints or need to drop the constraints.
    We can say that names for primary key are least required when it comes to the usage except better recognization.
    Because we can drop primary key, disable primary key,enable primary key without giving the name for the primary key as there can only be one primary key in the table. So not much an issue with the name.
    But as earlier post say its better than nothing,, i will add to it that its almost same as that with names constrained in case of Primary Keys taking into account the usage of the named primary key.

  • Can I have a primary key as a non-unique column

    Hi all,
    I have a table with 35 columns and only one column in a not null column. But this column data is not unique. I want to create a primary key with non-unique index, can I don it, if it is not possible is there any other way to it. Please help me with this.
    Thanks for your help.vinaykotha

    1) Do the 'Unique Column combination' check first, using this example. (Pl. Change the column name and number of columns you consider as candidate key.) The SQL as follows:-
    ;WITH CTE (ProductKey, CustomerKey, SalesTerritoryKey, DupRec)
     AS
      (SELECT ProductKey, CustomerKey, SalesTerritoryKey, ROW_NUMBER() OVER
         (PARTITION BY ProductKey, CustomerKey, SalesTerritoryKey
          ORDER BY ProductKey, CustomerKey, SalesTerritoryKey) AS DupRec
       FROM dbo.FactSales
    SELECT *
    FROM CTE
    WHERE DupRec > 1
    2) if CTE Table returns no records, you are good to create a Composite CLUSTERED PRIMARY KEY, like:
    ALTER TABLE dbo.FactSales
    ADD CONSTRAINT PK_ProductKey_CustomerKey_SalesTerritoryKey
    PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (ProductKey, CustomerKey, SalesTerritoryKey);
    If no error..bingo! if NOT, Don't worry, create a Composite Index like this:-
    3)
    CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_ProductKey_CustomerKey_SalesTerritoryKey]
    ON dbo.FactSales(ProductKey, CustomerKey, SalesTerritoryKey);
    This will work still efficiently. Usually all transaction table are like that like Daily_Order table, Ship_Details table etc.

  • How to set  a field primary key in a pre existing table

    Hi,
    Suppose i have a table and no field in it is a primary key like this

    Later i want to make a as primary key then how to do that?

    Table created.
    SQL> alter table t1

  • Primary key and Foreign key on same column

    Hi, I am able to create below tables , primary and foreign keys as below.
    But Is this valid design? Can I define a column (ckey2 in table "child") as
    primary key and as well as foreign key?
    CREATE TABLE parent (
    col1 NUMBER,
    col2 NUMBER
    CREATE TABLE child (
    ckey1 NUMBER,
    ckey2 NUMBER,
    ckey3 NUMBER
    alter table parent add constraint parent_pk primary key( col1 );
    alter table child add constraint child_pk primary key( ckey2 );
    alter table child add constraint child_fk foreign key( ckey2 ) references parent( col1);
    Thanks.

    Can I define a column (ckey2 in table "child") as primary key and as well as foreign key?You mean you want to define a one-to-one relationship between parent and child tables.. why would you want to do that ? You might as well merge the 2 tables into one.

  • Update a primary key and Fk

    Hello
    I have to update a primary key (PK) which is referenced by many foreign keys (FK).
    The primary key columns cannot be updated as this would orphan the dependant tables,
    and the dependant tables cannot be updated prior to the parent table as this would also make them orphans.
    I think this problem was solved by disabling the foreign key constraints or deleting the original records and recreating them.
    Since neither of these solutions is particularly satisfactory for me I read about 'deferred constraints'.
    My question is:
    Can I use(modify to) 'INITIALLY DEFERRED' keyword on constraints's table already created with The default, INITIALLY IMMEDIATE ,
    that is, update my primary key and foreign keys, and then re-set to
    'INITIALLY IMMEDIATE'? Or another trick exists ?
    Thanks in advance for your attention

    It is very popular the idea that the updates on primary key columns are a very bad thing.
    Oracle supports this idea and that's why they don't give the "on update cascade" clause on foreign keys.
    So in this case I suggest you to define a master table like this.
    create table master_table (
         key_id number primary key,
         your_primary_key varchar2 not null unique
    /Then you must use that key_id column as foreign key in place of your original primary key. In this way don't even need to update referencing rows when updating the original primary key because the foreign key value doesn't change and everything is always fine as before.
    So instead to lose time implementing some strange sort of cascade triggers plain to do something like this on your schema.
    insert into master_table (id_key,primary_key) (
         select rownum,primary_key
         from your_main_table
    alter table your_main_table add (
         id_key number,
    update your_main_table a
    set id_key = (
              select b.id_key
              from master_table
              where b.primary_key=a.primary_key
         Drops foreign keys
    alter table your_main_table drop primary key cascade
    alter table your_main_table add constraint pk
         primary key(id_key)
    alter table your_main_table add constraint fk
         foreign key(id_key) references master_table
    alter table your_main_table drop (
         your_primary_key
    alter table a_referencing_table add (
         id_key number,
    update a_referencing_table a
    set id_key = (
              select b.id_key
              from master_table
              where b.primary_key=a.primary_key
    alter table a_referencing_table add constraint fk_2
         foreign key(id_key) references master_table
    alter table a_referencing_table drop (
         your_primary_key
    /If you have many objects referencing those tables I suggest you to rename the tables and to create views with the original name of the renamed tables that show data as it was before with a join on master_table. in this way you don't need to change the code of the application referencing them but you just need to recompile invalidated objects.
    Bye Alessandro

  • Modify a primary key constraint

    Hi,
    I'm starting with oracle, and I have two doubts that can't handle after searching on the internet.
    1º It's possible to make an ALTER TABLE of a CONSTRAINT DEFAULT?. Maybe you think that the question should be in another way like this: Does oracle database take the default condition as a constraint?. As long as I know, doesn't do that.
    2º It's possible, with an ALTER TABLE, to MODIFY a CONSTRAINT of a PRIMARY KEY, to add another more field?
    I've been searching on the internet, but I didn't find a clear answer. I'm using oracle 10g express edition.
    Thank you very much.
    P.D.:Sorry for my english it's not very good.

  • Alter different users table, i need to add constraint: primary key

    Hi All,
    my oracle database : 10G
    I have a user named rahul and its trying to alter a table of a different user 'biapps_12'
    here is the alter table script that I am firing using user 'rahul' when connected to database 'MDMINT5' : alter table BIAPPS_12.W_PAYMENT_METHOD_D_O add constraint pk_W_PAYMENT_METHOD_D_O PRIMARY KEY (INTEGRATION_ID);
    Oracle error: [ORA-01031: insufficient privileges]

    2) I have an exclusive privilege which is [alter any table] but still I am getting this error.
    Please help me out.
    Regards
    Rahul

    If the user RAHUL genuinely has ALTER ANY TABLE then that user should be able to run the command you posted.
    Unless the privilege was granted through a role and the statement is being run as part of a PL/SQL block (through EXECUTE IMMEDIATE or similar contrivance). Anonymous blocks count as PL/SQL, and we cannot use privileges granted through roles in PL/SQL.

  • Altering Primary Key Constraint

    hi this may sound silly .
    but is it possible to alter a primary key constraint and add another column to it ?
    eg. >desc t1
    c1 number(3) not null
    c2 number(3)
    here I have created primary key on column c1.
    Now I want to alter this constraint and add second column also as part of primary key constraint (so that it will be composite primary key )
    How do i do that ? Do the column needs to be empty ?
    Thanks

    You should use ALTER TABLE DROP CONSTRAINT / ADD CONSTRAINT option.
    Do the column needs to be empty ?Because primary key constraint supposes NOT NULL constraints for columns
    included into primary key, all columns havn't to have nulls values (NOT NULL constraint will be added to c2 column):
    SQL> create table t1 (c1 number(3) not null, c2 number(3));
    Table created.
    SQL> alter table t1 add constraint t1_pk primary key(c1);
    Table altered.
    SQL> insert into t1 values(1,1);
    1 row created.
    SQL> insert into t1 values(2,null);
    1 row created.
    SQL> commit;
    Commit complete.
    SQL> alter table t1 drop constraint t1_pk;
    Table altered.
    SQL> alter table t1 add constraint t1_pk primary key (c1,c2);
    alter table t1 add constraint t1_pk primary key (c1,c2)
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01449: column contains NULL values; cannot alter to NOT NULL
    SQL> update t1 set c2 = 3;
    2 rows updated.
    SQL> alter table t1 add constraint t1_pk primary key (c1,c2);
    Table altered.
    SQL> desc t1
    Name                                      Null?    Type
    C1                                        NOT NULL NUMBER(3)
    C2                                        NOT NULL NUMBER(3)Rgds.
