Printing and Gamma correction

I read somewhere in the aperture manuals to match the monitors gamma in prints you may need to set gamma correction to 1.1 or 1.2 in the print dialog.
If I am exporting prints to a pro photo lab am I likely to need to correct the gamma of the exported image or should I send it uncorrected?
Also, should I generally have black point compensation on or off?

I've this code :
short[] threshold = new short[256];
for (int i = threshold_level; i < 256; i++)
   threshold[i] = (short) i;
BufferedImage dest = new BufferedImage(source.getWidth(),source.getHeight(),source.getType());
LookupTable look = new ShortLookupTable(0,threshold);
BufferedImageOp buff = new LookupOp(look,null);
buff.filter(src, dest);but I don't know what it's really change, if it's the input level of the BufferedImage, the gamma, the twice...
So to compare I used a commercial Software and I seen that my result is corresponding to a change of the input level of my BufferedImage and a gamma correction too. But i just want to change the input level of my BufferedImage, but I don't find example wich does that, so I try to make a gamma correction in the aim of cancel the first gamma correction produce by my LookupTable.
I hope you understand me. The aim is to make an histogram modification of a BufferedImage.
thank you

  • IPhoto prints and gamma

    For quite a while now, my prints from iPhoto (cameras Canon 30D and Sony Cybershot) have all been coming out much darker and duller than the appear on my Cinema Display. I've been poking about and have learned about Apple displays using 1.8 gamma rather than the 2.2 of a PC. To my dismay, I also learned that prints ordered through iPhoto are printed by Kodak Gallery (formerly Ofoto?) and they are not automatically adjusted to match the gamma of Apple displays. This would explain the dark results. Is everything I've stated here actually true? Is any of it true? Why would Apple partner with a printing service that would not adjust for Apple's beautiful displays? Do I have to switch my monitor to 2.2 in order to see how my prints will actually turn out when I order them through Apple? And why were the first prints / photo books that I ordered (back a few versions of iPhoto earlier) so much better / brighter / truer to my display?

    Michael:
    It seems that a gamma of 2.2 is more prevalent in the world than 1.8 because most digital printers are PC driven of sorts. Nature of the beast I guess.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I have an wireless printer and a new wifi router. I have set the printer and iPhone / iPad correctly to the new router but when i try to print it won't recognise the air printer. Help. All was working fine on my old router

    I Have a new wifi router and have set up my iPad / iPhone and wireless printer correctly  to the new router but I can't print from the iPad and iPhone. It keeps saying ' no AirPrint printer found'. Help please!

    Start with the most basic thing that you can try. Unplug the router from power for about 30 seconds, and restart the printer and the iPad and plug the router back into power.

    I just bought an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 and the printed images look yellow. I calibrate my MacBook Pro monitor with a ColorMunki Display. I want to make sure my Lightroom print settings are correct.

    This what I have been trying......  Maybe my eyes are screwed up or don't understand the process....
    What I have been trying to do is squint and make the apple disappear by moving the sliders around in each step. Is that correct?

  • I am using Acrobat Reader 11.0.10 . I cant print mixed originals and also I cannot print letter size correctly . printing of first two pages ok but the rest gets cut off at the top

    How can I print from MAC with Acrobat Reader. I can't seem to get it to print correctly , first two pages of letter size works ok after the remaining pages get moved up and the printing is cut off.

    I arrived here looking for a solution!  And while reading your post the penny dropped that I didn't have a serious problem.  I have a booklet of 112 pages and all I needed to do was re-order the pages as printed so that 1 is followed by a sheet with 2 on the under-face but same side and so on.  The pages had printed back to front and needed flipping.  But then I have a duplex printer and maybe that makes a difference.  Is it to do with your manual duplexing and the order that the second pass is presented to the printer.  As my duplex sheets effectively needed flipping over each one I'm wondering if you can solve your problem with a little experimentation and re-ordering before your second pass.

  • Envelopes do not feed correctly on my HP5610 All in One printer and return addresses get chopped off

    I'm running a Windows 8 64 bit laptop and the feeder seems to grab the paper properly but it cuts off part of the return address all the time. I can push it in maybe and inch or so when the feeder starts to grab the paper and this will correct it, but it will cause a jam if it's pushed in too far. It did this on my previous Windows 7 machine as well.

    Hello @gttechnic , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
    I can see from your post that you are running into envelope feed issues.  I'd like to help!
    I would recommend performing a power reset on the printer.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.

  • Why Levels mid-point slider and Exposure Gamma Correction slider not the same?

    Both the mid-point slider in Levels and the Gamma Correction slider in Exposure adjustment appear to modify Gamma.  They even use the same numeric scale.
    When Gamma <= 1, both sliders appear to produce the same results (confirmed with a couple of random sample settings and using the Difference blend mode).
    When Gamma > 1, however, the results are very different.  Levels produces more what one would expect in terms of moving the Gamma curve without moving the white and black points but the Exposure Gamma Correction slider seems to do something very different, either moving the black point or applying a very different curve the produces much brighter tones in the dark shadows.
    Can anyone explain why and how these two adjustments produce different results?
    Is this a bug with the Exposure adjustment?
    By the way, in my limited tests of this I was just using a standard RGB file in 16-bit mode - nothing fancy like 32-bit or LAB or anything like that.  Also, Photoshop CS6 Extended.  Both 32- and 64-bit versions show the same behavior.
    Thanks.

    The differing gamma adjustment results also occur in the OS X version of Ps 13.0.1
    The situation is worse than you realize, Dennis. Test with a linear grayscale gradient in 16-bit or 8-bit RGB mode instead of arbitrary images. Remember to view at 100% zoom for an accurate display.
    Gamma adjustments of less than 1 performed by Levels adjustment layer and Exposure adjustment layer do differ but to a less obvious extent than when the adjustment is greater than 1. Differences can be seen in histograms, and low level differences when differencing layers can be made more obvious by adding an Exposure adjustment layer with the exposure increased.
    You'll get further different results by using the gamma adjustment in the "Exposure and Gamma" method of Image > Adjustment > HDR Toning. Notice that the gamma value there has to be specified as the inverse of that in Levels and Exposure.
    I haven't bothered to calculate which, if any, of the three gamma adjustment controls gives correct results because that is Adobe's responsibility.
    It's quite ridiculous that a common routine giving consistent and correct results isn't being used for all these gamma adjustments. Code re-use makes software more robust, simpler to test, simpler to correct, leaner and overall easier to manage. But what do I know.

    I am having trouble printing I have a connection to my printer wirelessly but does not print out the correct page I want.When I do print I get a bunch of pages more than is needed and also get a code and symbols please help I am jammed at work

    This can be the result of selecting the wrong driver. An older, unsupported laser printer will sometimes work with the generic Postscript driver.

    AirPrint finds any air print enabled printers on your wifi network, and won't find any printers that are not.  So if you print from, say, safari, and it finds that printer, then that is your printer.   It may have a different name than you were expecting.
    Turn the printer off, and see if the print job still sees the printer.  That will confirm that the one it sees is yours.
    What happens when you send the print job?
    If you are sharing a wifi network with others, and one of them has a AirPrint printer on the network, you will see that one.  There is not way to have it forget one, so you will need to know your printer from the other printer, and select the right one.

    Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that you cannot print wirelessly with your HP Photosmart Premium c310 on Mac OS X 10.9. I am happy to look into this connection issue for you! I am not sure which support pages you have been to, but here are some that I would suggest going through: 'Printer Offline' or 'Printer Not Responding' Message (OS X).Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. Tips for troubleshooting wireless connection issues
    The following tips can help you troubleshoot and avoid wireless connectivity issues. You can try these tips separately or in combination to get a successful wireless signal. Move the printer and the computer closer to the router, but no closer than 6 ft (1.8 m). Wireless signals can be weaker at greater distances between the printer and the router.If you are experiencing an intermittent wireless connection, try restarting your router. Consult your router manufacturer, Internet service provider, or network administrator for instructions on how to restart the router.Remove any metal objects between the printer, the computer, and the router. Objects such as refrigerators, microwaves, or metal bookcases can interfere with wireless transmission.Move any device that emits radio signals, such as microwaves and cordless telephones, farther away from the printer. Such devices can interfere with wireless signals. Are you able to print to the printer with any other wireless devices? Hope this information is helpful, and hope to hear from you soon!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

  • PSE 11 - MacOX 10.7.5  Printing Wide Format Printer and Profiles Not Working Correctly

    Macosx 10.7.5
    When I start up PSE11  and go to print I set up the paper size then select a Printer Profile.  When print the image it is a mess and seem to be black and white it is as if I printed on the wrong side of the paper.
    I then go and try to print it again.   Now it all works as it should beutiful colours and spot on.  all other print following this works.
    Then I shut down PSE11.   Start it up again.  Guess what  first print is a mess again.   all others after are fine.
    I uninstalled PSE11, deleted prefs.  and reinstalled PSE11.    Same thing..   first print a mess all others ok.
    the issue can be replicated consistantly......
    no problems with PSE10 or PSE9
    any suggestions?????
    cheers elo

    Thank You for your suggestions.
    I have been printing using PSE for over  14 years going back before the term PSE came up.  I have done this professionally using profiles from others and those I generate myself..
    All the things you  mentioned have been done.
    The main  point missing in your suggestions is   It is only the first print every time I open up PSE11 that does not work...
    at completion of print I immediately go back to the file command and say print and then bypass all settings and print again.   this time and every other print aafter are perfect...      I did not change one single setting...
    I know about printer and adobe settings etc.     but thanks for going through the list it was a good reminder of how to remember everything sometimes we rush and forget something...
    Finally    It works PSE6, PSE9, PSE10, CS5, Lightroom 4.   I think I have the settings right......
    Any suggestions for how to get PSE11 to force the settings for the first print would be appreciated..
    Only thing I have not done is upgrade to the latest version of the epson driver.  Released less than a month ago to provide support for mountain lion.(iam only on lion)  Maybe just maybe???   you never know.   Will try this when I finish by next batch of prints.
    I will back up as I do weekly...    Still have the old driver from way back in release 10.5.8   will try to fire up to 10.5.8 and see what happens....
    cheers elo

    As suggested by adobe support contacted Epson.   What I expected no help.  Since it works ok with PSE10, PSE 9, CS5 it could not be their problem.
    However PSE 11 have changed something in the sequence of events.
    I then downloaded a trial version of Lightroom 4.   no problem everything works.
    I have been offered a refund for PSE11.     That is not encourageing.  Does that mean wait for PSE12?????
    I developed a bypass - every time I start up PSE11  I just print a dummy image thumb nail size.   then go on to regular printing and all works.

  • Adding Printer from Print and Fax does not bring up the correct Window.

    Hi,
    When I first had my Macbook, OSX Leopard, I tried adding a printer and saw that the Window that popped up allowed me to add printers from IP, Windows, Local, Etc.
    However, when I came back to add a printer now, all I get is this window:

    That window pops up when I press the + on this window:

    I remembered when I press the + button, it would come up with a different window than the one I get now, which allowed me to add a printer from Windows, among other options.
    Please let me know if the window I get right now is supposed to happen. I can't add any printers from the window I get now.
    Thanks alot.

    Just to add a bit of clarity to the previous response, you need to click on the clear, oval widget at the upper right-hand corner of the the window. That will reveal the Toolbar with the options for IP, Windows, etc.
