Printing and Sharing

I am brand new to Mac. I have a PC that is connected to a printer (Brother MFC 8440). The PC is on a network. I added the mac to the network and verified that I was able to connect. Now I want to prin on the printer connected to PC. How do I do that? Do I need to download and install printer drivers?
Also, how do I enable file sharing? And where do I look for it on the Mac?

This link gives a step by step.
If you would consider attaching the printer to your Mac, there is another solution called "Bonjour for Windows" which is a free download from Apple. With Bonjour for WIndows, all your Windows PCs can print through a Mac attached printer.

I would like to print out the icon and title of each of my IOS apps to another document for printing and sharing within my family.  My son has my old iPod touch so I erased it so he could put whatever games he wants to play on that I used to play with.  It is difficult to download every game at one time because there is too much to download at one time.  I have many hundreds of apps.  One way I found was to create a screen grab of each page in iTunes  then open it in Preview contact sheet but that is really tiny unreadable image of each screen.  I also tried importing a screen shot of the contact sheet into Paint 2 and magnifying it on several pages but that is really blurry.  The ideal solution would be to import the icon and text to another app or to provide a print list of apps solution within iTunes.

Create iPad screen shots by briefly pressing the home and on/off buttons together.  You will hear a shutter click sound and find a screen shot on your iPad's Camera Roll.  You can then print these screen shots as you would any iPad photos.
UPDATE: I assumed you had an iPad.  Hopefully your iOS device does have an on/off and home button and is capable of producing screen shots.

This stuff never happened to Mini1.

  • Unable to print to Canon iR-Adv C5045 from MacBook Pro that is connected to Windows computer and shared on the network

I am unable to print to a Canon iR-Adv C5045 from a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.4) that is connected to Windows NT computer and shared on the company network.  I am connected to the network by ethernet.
I was able to add the printer manually by going to Advanced, Windows printer via spoolss, smb://computer name/printer name and used the Canon iR-ADV C5045/5051 driver.
When I print it appears to be printing but nothing comes out.  I checked the completed jobs from the Print Queue and the job is listed.  Checked the print log on the printer and it isn't listed.  Is there a different driver I should be using for this configuration?

You may not have a choice as to what driver you can use. If the ADV C5045 only has the default UFR2 printer kit, then you will have to use the UFR2 driver - which is what you are using now. If you can access the copier, press the Counter Check button on the control panel. Then on the display you will see an entry labelled Check Device Configuration. Select this and scroll down through the pages. You are looking for an entry called PS. If you see it then the Canon does have the optional Postscript printer kit enabled and this will let you use an alternate driver. One suggestion would be to create the printer again using the same setting that you have done already but this time select the Generic Postscript driver included with the OS rather than use the Canon driver. This will help to determine if the driver is the cause.
If there is no PS option you will have to use the UFR2 driver and this could be the problem, as the Canon drivers don't always work well on a Mac via a Windows share. As a test, are you able to create a print queue directly to the Canon rather than via the Windows share? If you can, then this will let you check if the driver currently installed will work, as there can be settings on the copier that can block/stop you from printing. Assuming that you can print to the Canon with a direct connection from the Mac, then we can work on getting the printing via the shared queue. But if it doesn't print directly from the Mac, then it confirms that it may not be the server and more to do with the copier.

  • Printers added and shared without access to printer properties - Server 2012

On a Server 2012 domain controller, without the Print Management role installed, I have added a network printer through ‘Control Panel’ > ’Devices and Printers’, shared it through group policy, and the domain
member computers are able to print to the shared printer. But the printer never showed up in ‘Devices and Printers’ folder on the server.
The problem comes in since there is no way to edit the settings of the printer. The print queue for the printer does show up in Device Manager. I right-click the printer and select ‘Properties’, open the ‘Settings’ tab, and follow the link that
states, “Please go to the Devices and Printers folder to manage your printer”.
But this just opens up the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder which, does show/contain my printers.
If you are asking why the Print Management role is not used, It is because this system is self-contained and the most minimal features are installed on all computers for security compliance reasons. Therefore we typically just install the printers
on the domain controllers (via Devices and Printers) and then share them via Group Policy to the small number of workstations on the segregated network.
Did the ability to bypass installation of a Print Management role, and still edit printer settings, change for Server 2012? (We were able to do this with Server 2008R2. However, I can’t find any specific Microsoft documentation describing the change.)
So to try to fix this issue on the affected system (from my explanation above), I installed the Print Management role but the printers I created in ‘Control Panel’
don’t show up in Print Management. I still have no way to access the printer settings. Do I have to reinstall the printers? How do I remove the old printers? Do I just remove the ‘Print queues’ from Device Manager?
I tried to replicate my issue on a test system domain controller, built with very similar installation scripts as the affected system above was. I added a printer via ‘Control Panel’ > ‘Devices and Printers’, shared them, and they do not show up. However,
when I then install the Print Management role, the printers I created in ‘Control Panel’
now show up in Print Management. This is different than my affected system above.
If anyone could provide any insight on why this is happening it would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Dan

Most likely this is a security setting on the print shares. When you open Devices and Printers, the security token for BUILTIN accounts is not passed to the Explorer process so launching this User Interface as administrator does not contain the ADMIN security
token. If you have removed the Everyone group from the printer security, then the printer can disappear in this UI.  For printer admin tasks you should use the tools provided by the print team Printmanagement.msc.
Adding the Print Role opens the spooler RPC endpoint ( which you can also do by sharing a printer ) and adds the tools.
Can you just add the tools without installing the Role?

  • Airport Extreme "N" and sharing both a disk and a printer

I wanted to run a shared printer and a shared disk on my extremes and while I realize there was only 1 USB port, I wanted to know if I added a "powered" USB hub would it work. I tried it with a powered Belkin hub and was able to maintain both a shared printer and a shared disk on one of my extremes. If others try it, make sure you use a powered hub, and not one that draws it's power thru the USB port. I didn't need to do anything special, so if it does not work for you, it could be a combination of issues with the hub, disks, printers, etc. Next I am going to try one of the LaCie drives that include a USB hub. A powered USB hub runs in the 75 - 125 price range so the 320GB LaCie drive with USB hub at 169 seems like a good value if it will also work to add USB ports to the extreme. If anyone has tried this with the LaCie 320GB drive please post.

ok i am doing the same thing. i have a western digital 500 gig drive and a canon i9900 printer both connected to the airport 'n' using a cheapo powered usb hub from tiger direct. i think it was like 9 bux. that all works fine and has for some time. leopard has added some issues with reconnecting to the drive after the computer goes to sleep but i doubt this is hub related.
one thing to watch is the permissions are changed by the airport on the disk once you mount it there. if you then try to remove the drive and connect it to the computer you will have to modify [or check the ignore permissions box] the permissions.
and if i just unmount the drive from say within finder it will scream when i unplug the drive. i also have to use the airport utility to 'disconnect all users' before i unplug. after doing that the drive disappears from the finder, as opposed to showing it un-mounted.
i have 2 partitions one for my itunes library and one that is a boot-able clone. i have to connect the drive directly by firewire to make the clone [once per week] and until i started using the airport utility to disconnect i was having problems when i re-attched the drive after i cloned.

  • Network Connection Failures Affecting Printing and Finder Access

I have a Canon MX320 connected via USB to my iMac running OSX 10.9.1.  The latest Canon printer drivers are installed.  Everything works fine with this printer and computer combination.  The printer is enabled for shaing over the network.
The problem is that occasionally, the iMac seems to disconnect from any other laptop or desktop computer (Macs or PCs) connected through my wireless router.  On a mac laptop (also with OSX 10.9.1) I may lose access to shared directories on the iMac, and more often, I lose the ability to print from the laptop.  The print queues are unchanged on all Macs, but remote printing over the network fails with the message "printer not connected", even though the only change may have been that the iMac hosting the printer went to sleep.
Sometimes, waking the iMac allows the network print job to go through, but typically not if the print job is initiated before waking the iMac.  The printer queue on the laptop will seem fine, with "printer idle", but as soon as the print job is submitted, it briefly reports "looking for printer", and then "printer not connected".  Sometimes, everything (iMac and laptop) needs to be rebooted to re-establish a network printing connection through the iMac.
Trying to reset or delete and re-install the printer queue on the laptop does not fix the problem.  I am assuming that this is because the remote connection to the server (the iMac) has effectively been interrupted or lost.  The iMac may show up in a Finder window on the laptop as a simple PC icon, but with none of the connected directories visible.  trying to re-mount the remote directories by connecting to the "server" (the iMac) often fails.  It is as if something has happened to break the connection to the iMac, and both Finder and network printing are thereby disabled until everything is rebooted.
    Printer error log entries:

    E [13/Feb/2014:08:21:44 -0500] Unknown directive BrowseAllow on line 10 of /private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
This problem is intermittent but seems to be happening often after the Mavericks upgrade.  One should not have to wake up a remote computer prior to connecting to it, or asking a printer connected to it to print a job.

  • Trying to connect 2 mac mini's as a network, and sharing printers

Hello to all. Please help me as I'm a newbie on these Mac mini's. I am trying to create a network between the two mini's and I would like to share files between them and be able to print from the upstairs mini to the printers hooked up to the downstairs mini.
Mini 1 (downstairs) has 2 printers attached directly, a HP color laserjet and a Epson 800 Artisan
    Mini 2 (upstairs)
Mini 1 and mini 2 are both connected via ethernet to the Netgear router.
    Here is my problem:
on the mini 1, I can print and even access the mini 2 via sharing. I can screen share and view folders that is on the mini 2.
However, from the mini 2 computer, I cannot get the screen share and folder sharing from the mini 1 computer. I show that it is there, but when I try to connect, I get a message that states: CONNECTION FAILED The server may no exist or it is not operation at this time. Check the server name or ip address and your network connection and try again.
On the mini 2 I also cannot get anything to print. It doesn't even show that the printers that are supposedly shared at the other computer are present. I tried to add them, via default icon or even ip from the print and fax preferences, but I get error messages and cannot print.
ON THE mini 2: When I used the 'default printer' icon, both of my printers showed up using bonjour shared and I 'added' them. But when I tried to print, I got a message stating:
*Connecting to downstairs-mac-mini.local on port 631...*
*Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds....*
I deleted both printers as bonjour shared and tried to make the printers an ip internet shared, and put in the ip address xxx.xxx.1.2 (mini 1 ip address) but I got a message saying that that ip address was being used. I changed the ip address to xxx.xxx.1.5 (mini 2 ip address) and it looked like it was going to print, but it automatically goes to pause. (doesn't matter which printer it is, I can't print from either. I never did get either of the printers to work on mini 2.
I have done the following: On the mini 1, the printers are marked shared. On both computers the shared folders are marked shared, along with screen sharing. I also added all files on both computers to be shared as to who can read only or read and write.
Also, I have also gone to the 'system' icon and on internet sharing, I have made both computers to be shared, with the appropriate check marks done on the list of services I want shared.
ON both the mini 1 and mini 2 I have set the network to XXXXX Home and it automatically configured and states that my ethernet is connected.
On the downstairs computer, I can see the 'shared computer, and am able to access the files.
BUT on the other computer upstairs, I do see the downstairs computer, but it fails in the connection.
I noticed that the ip address for each computers state the same number, except the last digit is different. xxx.xxx.1.2 for the downstairs mini and xxx.xxx.1.5 for the upstairs mini. The router number and dns server along with the subnet mask are the same numbers between both of the computers.
I am going to set the power settings NOT to sleep when idle so that might help when I am trying to view files on each mini's.
So right now I am stuck with how to make the upstairs mini to print on the downstairs printers, and how to see the downstairs mini on the upstairs mini display.
Any help from anyone is very much appreciated. Sorry this is so long. Thanks in advance!

Mini 1 Allow only essential services
Mini 2 Allow all incoming connections
I changed mini 1 to allow all incoming connections
That did the trick for viewing, now will that help me on my printer issue also? YES! wahoo! Thanks so much, I would have not thought about checking the firewall.
Kudos to you and all your help!

  • Pages 2.0.2 won't print to shared printer

help! i'm at the end of my rope here.
pages used to print to my shared printer no problem. but since a hard drive failure in my powerbook g4 1.33 it's been no dice.
since getting the hd, everything has been reinstalled: 10.4.8, epson printer drivers, iworks; EVERYTHING. other apps print to the shared printer fine. (the shared printer is on a home network, connected to a mac pro. access via a wireless router (dlink))
i tried resetting the powerbook's PMU/PRAM. still, a popup window says: "error while printing."
when the PB is directly connected to the printer 'pages' prints fine, only to the shared printer. nothing on the network has changed at all. (except one of my attempts to fix this was to reset the printer system on the mac pro)
i've tried all the suggestions in the forum (searching for 'pages print error'), this includes turning off duplicate fonts with fontbook, resetting the printer system on the PB in various ways as suggested, deleting pref files and the like.
    steps to print involve these:
    1. open pages.
    2. open file
    3. select print, select shared printer.
    4. click print.
    5. a slight pause for about 1sec then the error message comes up: Error when printing.
any subsequent try at printing the same file or another file the message pops up immediately with no delay.
what am i missing? is there something on the network side?
i can't think of anything else to check. i've looked at apple support articles till the wee hours of the morning.
can someone offer any suggestions? you would have my undying gratitude!!
    cheers and happy holidays,
    sean

    hey folks,
i've used app zapper to delete pages and then re-installed it. same thing happens. no luck.
are there any other setting that pages might access? does PMSessionValidatePrintSettings refer to Print Manager?
could it be permissions on the print manager's plist file? i'm just guessing as there was a slight name change on her user name when her settings, etc. were imported thru the migration assistant after the hd failure. it's a guess as i've run into this problem when switching from my PPC to the Intel. my user name went from seanw to sean and some of my apps were still labeled with the old "seanw" as the owner. (this was because i dragged and dropped some stuff instead of using the MA as i didn't know it existed.)
if no solution presents itself how would i go about transferring my wife's user profile to another, new profile with out too much headache?
would i create the new user and use MA to transfer her stuff from her backup?
thanks for the suggestions, you have no idea how much this is appreciated.
    cheers,

  • Windows won't print to shared Lexmark

    Hello,
I've read several topics on the issue but none seem to have my specific problem.
Basically I have my Lexmark X1150 attached to my Mac (USB), printer sharing is on, and my Windows XP box has bonjour installed. I've followed all the instructions on setting this up and am pretty confident its all how it should be.
The Windows box sees the printer, and prints to it.
The mac queue accepts the file, starts to spool it, but then suddenly stops. (as though the pause queue button had been pressed.)
If I try to start the queue again the file then disappears and nothing happens.
Suspecting that it was a printer driver issue I tried a few different ones on the Windows box, most won't even allow the file to get to the mac, they just disappear.
The only driver which would at least get the file to the mac queue is the actuall X1150 printer driver, but that's as far as it goes.
Any thoughts? Specifically is there a priter driver I should be using (I've tried the Apple laserwriter drivers, and various Lexmark ones, to no avail.)
I've looked through http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/ but there doesn't seem to be anything on 'what to do if the printer queue stops'.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Thanks Greg
Unfortunately doesn't work (yet). It does now say "printer not responding" instead of just stopping, which seems like progress.
    Just a couple of questions...
When I went to the files...
    /etc/cups/mime.convs and /etc/cups/mime.types
the lines that started with: #application/octet-stream'
already had the'#' removed. Was I reading this right? I thought I was meant to remove the '#'. They looked like this when I opened them...
    # Raw print file support...
    # Uncomment the following type and the application/octet-stream
    # filter line in mime.convs to allow raw file printing without the
    # -oraw option.
    application/octet-stream
    # End of "$Id: mime.types,v 1.2 2005/02/25 19:31:50 jlovell Exp $".
Second question, with the serial number in the URI,
    ?serial=MO7P104xxxxxxxxx40
Do I just replace the 'MO7P104' and leave everything else in there? Or do I replace the whole thing 'MO7P104xxxxxxxxx40'.
    Thanks for your continuing help.

  • Printing to Shared Windows HPDJ1220c?

    Hello,
I have an HPDJ1220c attached to an old win98 laptop in the basement. I'd like to print to it from my powerbook g4 via the home network. I have sharing set up on the win98 machine and can find & connect to it from the powerbook. However, when I add the printer and look in the list of HP drivers, I can find one for the HP DeskJet 1220c. If I connect my powerbook directly to this printer, it will find the appropriate driver. I'd rather not trek to the basement every time to print, so I can I get this set up correctly?
    Thanks,
    Jaeson

I have NO experience with Windows98. This "may" be helpful:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/tiger.html
You can't do any network printing with the original driver from HP. It was written in Carbon and is for local connection (but "some" older HPs got a driver with HP appletalk protocol - try that after clicking More Printers in Printer Setup).
Get CUPS drivers (network capable) from:

  • Printing to shared windows printer - used to work, doesn't now

Once upon a time I was able to print from my powerbook to the HP LaserJet 1300 connected to my father's windows computer. I was wireless and the windows pc is wired to the network. I could see all the computers on the network and i could print and file share "normally."
Last year we made several changes to the network, which should have just simplified it, but now I cannot see the printer or any other computers on the workgroup from my mac. My windows desktop can do it fine (also wired) and my fathers wireless windows laptop can as well. I can connect to file share with my mac if I use the IP of the computer, I can no longer just browse the network like i could before.
I am not sure how to access the shared printer now. I have tried different things over the past year and I am just tired of having to get a USB cable and stand next to the printer with my laptop.
I have tried to just connect using the ip of the computer the printer is shared from but that does not work.
    "smb://username:[email protected]/printersharename"
    doesn't work.
I have theorized that it might be that there is now MAC address filtering enabled for wireless connections but I cannot turn it off to test.
Has anyone else encountered this (being able to, then unable)?
    Powerbook G4 1.5ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It sounds like maybe you have a wired router and
added an Airport base (or other wireless router) for
wireless? If I've guessed wrong, please describe your
network and check whether the wired and wireless
computers are in the same subnet (that is, only the
last part of 192.168.1.x can be different, the first
three parts are the same on every computer).
The some of the wired computers go through a switch, but some go straight into the router (because they are closer to the wireless router than to wall jacks). This doesn't seem to affect my ability to see them on the network because I can't see any from my powerbook. Everything is on the same subnet and the only devices are the router and the switch, but I can't see stuff hooked directly to the router either.

  • How can I print from my ipad2 to my hp6210 all in one using printopia...I can see the list on my ipad2, I select the printer and say print but nothing happens.

How can I print from my ipad2 to my hp 6210 all in one using printopia? I see my printer on my iPad, I select it and say print and nothing happens. The printer is connected to an older Mac with OS X 10.4.11 but I do have an imac in another room. I have trouble printing from the iMac to this printer also even tho share is on but the printer works fine with the old Mac it's connected to. My iPad has the latest iOS.

    A few things to consider.
The computer Printopia is loaded on must be powered on and must be able to print on the printer that is being shared.  If the iMac is having problems printing to the printer it could indicate a problem with the share setup.

  • Is it possible to network a AIO Printer and use the Scanner and Fax on all computers.

I have a small network on a Peer to Peer. I have a non network printer. HP Deskjet 3050. Currently the printer and applications for Fax and Scan are installed onto two workstations. One computer has the printer directly connected via the USB. This system is sharing the printer on the network as a host.
The other computers are printing from the share without error but I cannot scan or fax with the "client" workstations. I receive an error indicating the printer is not connected. My question is: Is there any possible way to share the Fax/scan feature throughout the entire network?
I thought of purchasing a Network "Print-Server" but have heard they don't work and I need to buy a "Network Printer".
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I don't think there is such thing as scan sharing in Windows.
Why not just buy a wireless printer?  I'd recommend that way more than a wireless print server (which don't support scanning, only printing - as far as I know).
