Printing Malfunction

I have iMac G3. I am connected to an HP DeskJet 648C via USB port. This has been a working relationship for about 6 years. I moved the computer and printer to another room. Now I am having trouble printing. I go through the whole process with the CD software and then when I go to Chooser to select my printer I can select the printer but it won't drop into the Setup window. The printer prints it's WOW! page so that I can see how beautiful it is but I can't print my documents from the iMac. The icon appears in the dock but disappears almost as fast as it appears and nothing happens. I have downloaded drivers from the Apple site and I have been in dialogue with HP about the printer. I have done everything HP told me to do. I still have the problem. The printing from the CD suggests to me that the problem lies within my iMac. Can you help me?

cs6 indesign will not print chapters in a book after the first chapter either single page or double sided to one printer (OfficeJet Pro K8600) but will print those chapters to another printer (CannonMX920).
OfficeJet duplex function works in other applications, e.g. Acrobat. OfficeJet also prints first chapter in book both single page and duplex.

  • Intermittent printer malfunction

I am unable copy, fax, scan or print from my computer or directly from the officejet 4500.  My IMac recently upgraded to 10.9.4 and I have been having issues ever since.  I have uninstalled, sent hp folder and any other items "hp" to the trash, emptied trash, reset printer, added printer, ran software updates and changed the USB cable.  I have repeated these processes in one form or another at least six times because that is how many software updates I show for the printer.  If I print from eitherthe computer or the printer itself, it is hit-or-miss; sometimes it prints other times all it does feed a blank sheet through and then it  feeds another sheet half way through and displays printing.  On my attempt to fax, it dialed and fed two sheet thru then displayed that the fax was cancelled.  Upon copying, from the glass, it will copy a page with the top of the page cut off then upon another attempt it will repeat the same blank sheet then half fed sheet as it does upon printing attempts. Surprisingly, the scan option seems to be the only thing working correctly as it is the one option that has always given me the most problems.  PLEASE HELP THIS IS DAY THREE OF ISSUES.....

    Hello far2neet,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're receiving problems printing, copying  and faxing using the Officejet 4500. I will do my best to assist you! I realize you have performed some necessary steps to try and resolve this issue! I would recommend following this thread on Mac OS won't connect to wireless. This will allow you to clean up the HP software.
I would recommend making sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I just want to see if this makes a difference. I would try resetting this printer for more than 60 seconds. Leave the printer turned on> Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
The fact that when you print or copy a document, you receive a blank page sometimes, then I would recommend following this entire HP document on Printing blank pages. Let me know on this post how this test page prints out.
When you fax a document, does this issue happen every time or only one particular fax number? Could you describe what type of added features do you have on this fax line? I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!

  • ITunes 11.0 CD print malfunction

After upgrading/updating to iTunes 11.0 the print program doesn't print a CD cover, instead it just prints a compressed block with has the individual tracks on it.  How can that be fixed?  Or what can be done?

Good news! I received an iTunes update (11.0.1.12) from Apple today and the problem is fixed.

  • My MacBook will no longer connect to my wireless printer.

My MacBook (circa 2010 - it's not a MacBook Pro) stopped connecting wirelessly to my HP printer (3050 J610). I get a message, "Printer is offline." The printer is on and I have no trouble printing from my iMac. I appreciate any advice/insights. Thank you.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're all users here.
There is a 'Reset Printing System' command:
, System Preferences, Hardware, Print & Fax, right-click (Command-click) on the printer in question in the left column, as illustrated below, and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING NOTE: This WILL delete all printers AND print cues AND saved settings, if you have saved your own 'custom settings' for the printer, and named them, such as 'Staples Glossy Photo-rear feed', those WILL disappear.
Then you then will need to reinstall all printers, and re-create any custom settings, so if you have a lot of custom settings saved, make screen captures (+shift+3) for the things you customized BEFORE you reset.
Yes, this is drastic, but if nothing else works, AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT CAUSED BY A PRINTER MALFUNCTION, this has always worked for me to cure my wireless print problems such as you describe.

  • Printing problem with iPhoto 9.5 version

I have tried to print a photo today, using the Share function in iPhoto.
It did not work. Epson SW438 printer fired up but proceeded to print the picture but without
    the paper feeding through.
This is NOT a printer malfunction. I printed successfully a picture through the Finder/Picture folder route.
Anyone else finding this latest release of iPhoto bugged?

Did you check the Epson website for v10.9 Mavericks compatible drivers to download and install yet ??

  • Imac 3.2GH core i3 and printing

    Hi,
I have a new iMac and I am having trouble printing. I have been on the Apple support but they are unable to help either. The trouble I have is printing photos.
    I have tried two different printers HP Photosmart all-in-one with a resolution of 4800 x 1200 and a Canon PIXMA MG6150 with a resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi.
The prints from, for example, Safari are OK. But from iPhoto the prints resemble something like brail! with the colours all over the place, almost as if the printer can not "mix" the colours.
This was the result on both the HP and Canon printers.
The ink is still wet and takes ages for it to dry on the photo paper.
I tried printing the photo from a different application ie Preview, under a different log on id, cleaning th eprinter head, running test pages, printed a different photo, used a different photot from a separate down load from the camera. All this has made no difference.
The camera I used was a Canon Powershot 9 which is a very high resolution camera and I havenot experienceed this before with the photos from it on a PC.
I am running the printer wireless.
I can not think of any thing else other than perhaps I am experting too much. This is my first computer and I though photos would come out in a reasonable quality that you would be able to put in an album. However, this is not the case.

You do realize that it is not just the settings in the computer, but that the printer actually does the printing. One needs to check all the equipment before putting all the blame on a single one. I have printed outstanding photo quality pages with my iMacs and Epson printers.
To begin with, you did not specify the HP model, so I checked your Canon model. Did you install the correct drivers and other software needed for your printer to communicate with the computer? I found this page:
    http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010891.asp
When you tried to print from Preview for instance, did you check and/or adjust all the settings available in the print window under all the drop down windows? For instance, under color management, there are quite a few choices alone.
And, quite importantly, the ink being wet and taking ages to dry appears to possibly point to a printer malfunction.

  • HP deskjet 960c printer stair-step printing problem

Hi there, my printer used to work beautifully. Now when it prints it I get a stair-step effect. ie it starts OK, then the image moves up by a millimeter, then another millimeter etc etc. It's very annoying. It does it no matter what I print, text, images, pdfs...
Can anyone throw any light on this, and what I might do to correct it? I'm on a G4 quicksilver using os x 10.3.9. Printer driver is up to date as far as I know.
    TA!

    Kathykate,
    We're still reading--
Ooooh these printers, I could scream!
I can be very frustrating at times. Especially when you have intermittent problems.
First, I switched the usb cables around, and that
    didn't make a difference.
It was a thought. We can pretty much rule out a bad USB cable now.
    Then I installed the
gutenprint drivers. They printed out my images in a
not very clear kind of pointalist dots type way, my
type was no longer clear, and the colours were not as
good as before and anyway, it still stair-stepped so
    I uninstalled them.
Interesting that the printing is "pointalist". My old HP 870 also uses the PCL 3 driver from Gutenprint. Text is great. I really don't use that printer for images, however. I have noticed a blue shift in the tones. The fact that the printer is still stair-stepping with these drivers would point to the printer malfunctioning. Especially as I look back over the previous posts and noticed that the stair-stepping seems to have increased in displacement.
But I noticed something in the
gutenprint set up where it talked about respooling
your printer? Basically you had to go into file
sharing and click printers to file share and this
    reset something.
I don't recall seeing that. Do you recall what part of the documentation that was in?
Did 4 prints and no stair-stepping!
Thought I'd cracked it! Of course the next one
stair-stepped... Have also tried the usb cable
directly into the back of the computer (it's normally
    plugged into a belkin hub).
So that one is completely unsolved, still random
    stair-stepping.
All indications seem to point to this being a hardware issue with the printer. The only other test I can think of is to try it on another computer. A Windows box would be a good choice. I know the option of trying things on a different computer is not always possible. I just hate to condemn a printer to the trash heap until all possible avenues have been explored.
My big 1125c is also still a 'mare. When it prints,
it's great, no stair-stepping. But my mac keeps
    losing the connection to it.
Again, the frustration of a sometimes problem. I don't have any good advice here. We have seen this type of problem before and there doesn't seem to be any one thing that helps in all cases. I have three printers. My Epson SC 800 which is connected via a parallel to USB adapter has this problem. I have not found a solution for it. My other 2 printers never skip a beat.
Haven't yet run Apple Hardward Test disk (think I
have it somewhere) although tried the Printer Setup
Repair mentioned and that hasn't seemed to help.
I would still recommend that you give this a go. There still could be a problematic USB port on your computer that is causing some of the problem.
PS Have today posted another question about something

  • MX892 printing blank pages

My printer has been working just fine. However, just today one of the cartridges was low, so I replaced it.  Now when I try to print it just spits out blank pages. I ran the test to check for clogged nozzles, but the all blocks print beautifully.  What do I try next?

I started seeing this problem since yesterday. One day it was printing fine and the next day it stops. And I have always used only original Canon ink, so that shouldn't be the reason for my printer malfunctioning.
Conveniently this happened right after my warranty expired!! And I brought this printer after my previous Canon printer malfunctioned after the warranty period expired (To be fair, the previous one lasted a little longer than this one after the warrany expiry!)
Really hoping this doesn't turn out to be a case of .. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

  • An Open Letter To Mark Hurd

    Hi Mark,
I’m an HP customer. One who really loved her convenient, manageable, cute, personal HP printer/scanner/copier until it suddenly stopped functioning. This letter is not to fault your products. Rather it’s your policies I have issue with.
Your tagline is something about making the computer personal again, but your service has felt anything but personal. Upon realizing I had a printer malfunction, I tried to figure out online what might be wrong by going through your troubleshooting manual. No dice. I couldn’t find anything about an “E” appearing where numbers should be. I assumed it meant “Error”, but not being tech savvy, I instantly doubted myself and thought, Well, what if it means Empty? What then? Could it be that simple? Ugh, I need help.
So I decided to pick up the phone and call customer service where I was patched through to a representative after about 10 minutes with an automated system. This man, who refused to give me his ID number saying that it was against company policy to release such information, spent more time taking more of the same basic information only to tell me that my warranty has expired and that if I wanted to talk to anyone, it would cost me $34.99.
This astounded me. We had not even gotten to what the problem might be. My mind raced, Am I really going to pay someone $34.99 for them to tell me that I need to replace a cartridge? I tried to explain this dilemma to him, but was getting nowhere so I asked to speak with his supervisor. I was then informed that supervisors are reserved only for customers whose products are still under warranty. This, too, felt counterintuitive. Why would I need a warranty to talk to a supervisor? I talk to supervisors for companies who never gave me a warranty in the first place, I thought. He said I could email in my problem at no charge, but I wanted to talk through the problem with someone in a reasonable amount of time. Not write down word for word, blinking light by blinking light, button by button what was going on and then never know whether I’ll get a response (although it looks like that’s where I ended up anyway…touche, Mark) or whether my explanation was coherent. I explained to the man that I wasn’t paying any amount of money to talk to someone about my problem and that I was willing to remain on the line until he was able to figure out a way to help me. That is his job, right? To help me fix a problem? I wanted to give him an opportunity to be a problem solver. I needed help, plain and simple. Just someone to talk to.
Well, he hung up on me. Said I was a waste of his time. So I tweeted about it. For all the HP accounts on Twitter, one guy responded to me. He was very nice and at least attempted to be helpful. Wouldn’t you know it, he was in marketing, not customer service. I gave him my phone number and my email and two weeks (two weeks!) later I received a phone call from a Mr. Dan Finn from the executive office. I thought, Whew! Finally, the executive office will know what to do. And they’ll be a lot more invested in my satisfaction as a customer. I couldn’t wait to talk to Dan. After a few missed calls and bad timing, Dan and I finally connected.
In my dreams, this is what Dan said, “I understand what you’re saying, let’s see if we can’t get someone to talk to you. I’m sorry you’ve had an unpleasant experience so far, and rather than just TELL you how sorry I am and how much HP values you as a customer the way everyone else has, I’m going to prove it to you and try to help you fix your problem. If it’s a quick fix there’ll be no problem, but it’s possible that it’s a bigger problem and then we can talk about the cost of any repairs. I’ll stay on the line while I patch you through to a technician so the three of us can talk this through and I'll make sure you get taken care of.”
In reality, this is what Dan said, “You can pay $34.99 to talk to a technician or you can chat online or email. Ma’am it’s stated pretty clearly on the warranty. I mean, your product was purchased in 2005. So your warranty’s been expired for a while now.” Don’t get me wrong, Dan was a nice guy. He was just doing his job, much like customer service representative #1 from the first call (except CSR#1 did get a little sassy and, oh yeah, he hung up the phone on me). When I asked if I could write you a letter to advise on how flawed I feel your customer service policy is, he gave me the address to his office where he promised to consider my thoughts, file away my letter to a place where it would never see the light of day and you certainly would never be bothered with it. Well played, Mark. You train them well. So I decided to post this somewhere where whether or not you see it, certainly other potential and current customers will.
Let me ask you something: Am I an HP customer as long as I own an HP product, or only as long as that product is under warranty? Just because you can no longer assure me that the product I paid for will function properly, does that mean that I’m no longer deserving your help? When was it ever a good business plan to LIMIT customer service? If that ever worked at some point in history, you're sadly behind the curve in realizing it's not going to fly today. That doesn’t sound like you want to keep things really personal. Not one bit. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall at whatever meeting that decision was made at:
Suit #1: So, now that we’ve got the terms of this warranty written up, what do we do if a customer needs something after it expires?
    Mark Hurd: Screw ‘em.
What really gets me is that I’m willing to pay to have it repaired! I understand nothing lasts forever and sometimes things go wrong and need to be fixed. If you would just let someone talk to me about my problem long enough to figure out what’s going on, I’d pay someone to fix it. But pay someone to tell them what my problem is?  That doesn’t sound right to me. Does it sound right to you? Don’t help your customers because it's an opportunity to squeeze more money from them, help them because you have pride in the quality of the products you sell. I’m really sad, not only because this is the #2 most frustrating situation I’ve had behind getting cable installed (they finally came) but also because I LOVED your product, and now I can no longer use it and I have no idea why.
It crossed my mind that this is all a ploy to just get me to never fix the old product and buy a brand spankin’ new HP printer, I’m sorry, Mark, but if that's the case, you’ve failed. Because after this experience I have no intention of ever purchasing another HP product now that I know how very little you value your customers. This is a dangerous policy you’ve got here, Mark. Customer loyalty is so important. Especially now, I’d say it’s critical to a company’s survival in these tough economic times. I urge you to reconsider your current policy when it comes to your customers. Either that, or create a new advertising campaign. I’m dying to know: What exactly about HP is making the computer personal again? If you read this, that question is not rhetorical. Please let me know. Call your executive office, Dan will know how to reach me.
These kinds of bad practices lead to bad PR. If you don’t want bad publicity, do the right thing and be good to your customers.
    Thanks and best,
    Rebecca

Restrict them from using? But why? Just because they were being objective, and thus didn't quite agree with your opinion? Besides, i believe it is because of the HP employees taking up their personal time to help resolve other customers' issue for free and nothing else in return, that the forum has been as helpful as it has been so far. Without us, there'll just be more questions, not many answers and more rants and frustration-venting.

  • Garbled Output on Deskjet 1120C

My Deskjet 1120C has developed a printer malfunction. The output consists of multiple pages with just a few lines of garbled symbols, icons and characters on the top of each page. It seems to start printing OK but then stops momentarily before reverting to printing the output I have described. I have tested the printer offline and it will not print out a test page just the top of the HP logo and Deskjet 1120C title. The OS is Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3. Any suggestions for a solution to fix the problem?

We have this problem too. We coverted my mother to a PC after years on a Mac. It's an HP with an HP printer (Deskjet F4180) and the poor woman has problems with printing EVERY TIME SHE BOOTS her PC!
It's so annoying. We have to reinstall the software and use the Printer Diagnostic EACH TIME -- which is practically every day.
HP, solve this issue. We're ready to turn in the computer and printer!!

  • Feeds two sheets of paper

My pro 8600 print head failed so purchased a pro 8630 today. Using xerox digital carbonless copy paper the printer draws two sheets each time and makes 1 off-center print. This is the same paper I've used for years in my 8600. It feeds and prints with no problem on my HP Office jet 100 mobile printer.  Misprints using either tray of the 8630.  Printing with standard copy paper is no problem.

Update:  Now find that printer is occasionally misfeeding plain copy paper, must be printer malfunction and not the oaper.

I have an hp office jet 4500 and os maverick 10.9.4 and I can’t get it to print after last upgrade, multiple malfunctions and error, help? I have tried deleting and resetting printer and re-installing update 6 times. Last update attempt showed none available??? I can’t load the software directly from HP because their only option is to use the software update option on the mac....frustrated!!! Help!!
I get blank pages that just run through the printer and a stats window that just 33% complete and goes no further.

I am going on the guess that an old driver is still installed...
Use Finder Go > go to folder, and go to /Library/Printers and delete the HP folder(s).
    Reset the Printing System:
OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
Now, Add the printer in Print & Scan prefs.

  • Print Merge malfunction in Pages

I have encountered a problem with the PrintMerge or MailMerge function in Pages - Numbers.
I am using Pages - Numbers to create a template for producing legal documents relating to real estate transfers.  A Pages document serves as the template and a Numbers document supplies the merge information.
In one document, under construction, the print merge does not work for some fields and (because of this?) other information is not displayed correctly.  By 'does not work' I mean that the MergeField is placed in the document, but after using the Edit/Merge function, no information is merged.
Also, other information, following the non-working fields ('following' meaning that the fileds are displayed to the right of the non-working fields in Numbers) is not displayed correctly.  Information for Numbers fields TO THE RIGHT of the non-working fields is displayed, but incorrectly shows the information for the 3rd field to the right of the correct information.  The error is consistent.
Of note, there are three (3) fields that do not display information.  The shift is 3 places to the right, and happens for fields located to the right of the location of these 3 non-woking fields.
Significantly, I think, is the fact that when the three fields that do not display information are dragged to the right, to the right edge of the spreadsheet, the other fields then display correctly in merged documents.
I looks as if something about these three non-displaying fields causes the mail/print merge routine to skip past them, and the next available information is then displayed, causing the fields to display 'shifted data'.
There is nothing I can see that is odd about the name or function of these three fields.  I have tried different names and have tried deleting and rebuilding them.  They are all computed fields which calculate days elapsed.  Thinking that perhaps this was the cause, I created text fields into which I placed the information - just text and no computation - with the same (non) result.
This is fortunately just three fields, and I can build a work-around for them.  The program works consistently and I am confident that it will consistently produce the other merges.  But I am perplexed by this malfunction and can find no answer as of yet on my own.
I do think that this is a real issue.

Date objects won't merge properly. You haven't said what type of data you are merging, but I'm guessing to try to narrow down the field. If you convert your dates to Text fields, they will merge. A simple way to do this is to Concatenate a bit of text to the date. In this example, column B will merge; column A will not:
