Problem burning to external DVD

I'm trying to burn my iDVD project to an external DVD burner (brand-new Philips model that's supposed to have all the bells and whistles). I went with an external burner since the Pioneer drive that came with my eMac croaked and I couldn't find a good replacement. I was able to burn a disk yesterday with no problem, but today, after I made some changes to my movie project and wanted to burn a new disk, it keeps trying to talk to the (broken) internal drive instead of the external one. I know the computer recognizes the external drive because it asks me what I want to do when I insert a disk or when I unplug and plug the USB cable back in. Is there some way to disable the internal disk drive so iDVD won't keep defaulting to it? This is driving me crazy because it worked perfectly yesterday, and I didn't do anything different this time around.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted, because right now I want to throw the whole system out the window.

Hi
USB Cable ? Does this works ? Previously ?
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
Many possible origins. Most common:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/acount* - log into this and re-try
• Program miss-match: eg iDVD 5.0.2?, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4 - is OK

  • Macbook Pro not able to burn from External DVD drive

    Hi there,
I just bought a Samsung SE-208DB external drive for my 2011 Macbook Pro 8,1 13inch and at first the drive was detected by my Macbook Pro and I was able ot burn a disk but now when I plug in the device, it powers on for a bit then powers off to were I can't eject the disk anymore. Then sometimes it works just fine. I am using an external USB hub with AC plug power so I am confident power to the USb isn't an issue. I just wanted to know are Macbook Pro known to have issues with external drives?
And for those wondering why I don't just use the internal DVD on my Macbook Pro, I replaced it with an SSD for dedicated Windows 7 operating system.
Any ideas on how to approached this problem? Should I just get another brand of external DVD drive. I know I can't get Apples as for some strange reason, Apple makes those only compatible with Macs that didn't come with DVD drives like the Macbook Air.
    Thanks

    Ok I solved it.
The problem is that the drive uses too much power from the usb port.
You can use one of those cables with on one end two usb plugs and on the other end a mini usb. Connect the coresponding usb for power to an iphone charger or any 5v/1amp charger.
Or you can do what I did. I used a usb hub. In one usb port I connected my iphone charger and the drive to another usb port on the hub.
I have just burned my first succesful disc.
    Regards

  • Problems burning dual layer DVD's

we have had lots of problems trying to burn dual layer dvd's. Single layer has been fine but is there some secret trick for getting dual layer to work? we have tried both the internal dvd burner and an external one and both are supposed to be dual layer capable.

about half of the ones we try get about half way through and then say media sense error (or similar wording) some of the others look like they have burned fine and then when it is writing the last little bit it just stops, this results in discs which are unreadable. The others look like they've burned fine and then don't play one of the items on the DVD once it is put in the machine.
Those that do play appear to stop about the level of the switch of layers.

  • Problem booting from external DVD drive on Lenovo S10e

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new Lenovo S10e ideapad, a few weeks prior to that I purchased an external DVD rewriter drive manufactured by LG, the drive works perfectly on every computer I try with the exception of the Lenovo ideapad S10e.
The thing is that the drive is being recognized and installed by the Windows XP Home Edition the S10e came with but when I try to boot a bootable CD using then drive on the S10e ideapad I almost alwasy fail to do so.
I set the S10e BIOS to have the USB CDROM as first boot device, in addition I used the F12 key to use the boot menu to choose the boot device, in 9 out 0f 10 atempts my external drive will not show in the boot menu and when choosing the enter setup option I see that the BIOS do not list it as the USB CDROM, instead it says "USB CDROM:" rather than have the drive name after it.
In the 1 time out of 10 it does work the BIOS seem to be identifying the drive and it shows in the boot menu, however I cannot work with it for a more than 1 minute without it stopped being recognized again.
The problem seems very strange to me as the drive works under the windows operating system and do not have any problem whatsoever on other computers, I have tested the external drive on my PC, another Mini Laptop from LG and a GIGABYTE Laptop (Normal one), all of which had no problems recognizing the external drive and booting from it.
I will really appreciate if I can get some help with the problem.
    Thanks.

I've had a similar issue with X61 and the external DVD drive from Lenovo.
In my case, it was the power issue. On the back of the drive, there is a small table says that the drive needs a 3.0A 5V power input. One USB 2.0 port can only provide 0.5A. I don't know if the drive has any special, low power mode, but I suspect that even if it has, 0.5A is still not enough to fully power it. I've checked the current with the multimeter, and at peak times, the drive draws 550mA. Even then, it makes a stuttering sound for a few seconds, before finally spinning the DVD disk. I've also noticed that the DVD works most of the times when it's connected to the left USB port. That may be because of how the laptop's internal power circuicity is laid out (+separate USB host controller for each 'side' of the laptop). Another thing that seems to help is to disable all 5V driven devices that the laptop uses: the wifi card, bluetooth, any additional devices connected to the USB bus / to the ethernet port / SD card port (I'm not actually sure which of the devices are 5V and which are 3.3V, but the best option is to disable all of them), maybe even remove the battery (if it's charging). Finally, the DVD drive works better if the laptop was turned on and runnig for some time, rather than it being turned on "a minute before". Also, in the BIOS, there is a setting that changes the speed of the DVD drive, but switching it to "low" didn't seem to affect the external drive (at least not before Windows boots up).

  • Disk Utility won't burn with external dvd burner!!! HELP?!?!?!

    Hello anyone/everyone!
I need some help, I'm trying to burn a file using the disk utility. Only thing is that the disk utility wants to used the drive installed on my iBook (combo drive) and not my external DVD drive! I couldn't find a way to be able to chnage the default burner, and I was hoping that someone/anyone could help me out? The file is too large for a regular 800mb disk so I have to use the external dvd burner. Help me please oh wise-ones?!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Find out if the external burner is Patchburn compatible. If it is, then apply it from http://www.patchburn.de/
If not, I'd sell the external burner and get one that is compatible like those from http://www.macsales.com/
You may find other tricks on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ as well.

  • Burning to external DVD writer

I bought an LG DVD-RW GSA 5163D. I can't get iPhoto to see the external DVD. The thing is I want to burn my photos on DVDs in stead of CDs. How can I burn the DVDs on the external writer through iPhoto?
    Please help!!

Yes. But you'll need Roxio Toast , iDvd, DVDSP (part of FCS 2), or an alternate Burn Utility / App.
(you don't need all the above apps ..... just one that works well for you). I highly recommend using firewire over usb to connect the external burner to your mac (even though Toast and DVDSP may see both).
    Good luck.

  • Problem burning to CD/DVD on internal or external burner

My G4 is not longer recognizing cds or dvds on my internal drive.
I plugged in my new LaCie firewire burner, and the G4 isn't recognizing blank discs in that either.
As soon as I pop the disc in I get the message "This disc cannot be used becasue it is not recognized."
When I run DiskUtility it sees the drives and the discs, but lists the discs as "locked" and "read-only". Again, I have used a multitude of different brands and types of brand new cds and dvds; discs that used to burn fine on the internal drive. So what am I missing that has changed?
The external drive and various discs work with our Powerbook G5 with no problems.
I have been running 10.4.1 – that seems to be when the problem began.
I ran PatchBurn4.04 with no results.
    Anything else?

I MIGHT HAVE FOUND A FIX!
I was having this problem as well, were i could not stick in any DVD-R / RW.
But and CD-R and Regular DVD and CD would work (Dual 2.0 G5)
As i was Cleaning my computer up, I foound a burn folder i could not delete.
(folder with with the Burn icon on it)
Cmd-i and i see it is locked. i unlock it and delete it. For whatever reason... i stuck in a DVD-R and it read and Started to load my home movies!!!!
Step 1: Look for any Burn folder, Were you started to burn a dvd but it failed or anything like that. not sure how you would search for it.
Step 2: Is it locked? You'll see a padlock like icon in the lower left corner, it's silver grey.
Step 3: Cmd-i (10.4.10) Under the Color Label box you will see this little Gem: [√] Locked Unlock it so that it shows: [ ] Locked
Step 4: Delete said folder, and empty trash.
Step 5: Insert DVD-R, and enjoy.

  • Problems booting from external DVD writer.

I have used an Optibay to put a second HD in my MBP 3,1 2.2 GHz in place of the original burner.
I am using a Freecom Mobile DVD LS Pro instead of the internal.
The Freecom will boot the original install disk, Snow Leopard and Leopard disks, and a Techtool Pro disk.
But it won't boot any Diskwarrior disks, or any Paragon Rescue disks, or the EFI Windows 7 disk I made and used to install Windows 7 while the internal DVD writer was still fitted.
All the disks boot my Mac Pro fine, so the problem is not the actual disks.
I have tried with the Freecom connected both USB and Firewire.
I will probably put the original burner back, but before doing so, I wanted to ask if there are any other explanations, or anything I could do to make these disks boot?
If there is a different brand of external known to boot better, I would consider getting it.
    Thanks for any input.

I put the original burner back in, and now the other disks are booting OK!

  • Problems burning Blu-Ray DVD with Encore CS6 Creative Cloud version

I recently installed Premiere Pro CS6 from Creative Cloud on a high performance PC. Everything works fine but Encore Blu-Ray burn will not finallize... get error message after most of disc is burned. Have tried several burns without success. Same files burn okay with Cyberlink software. Seems to be a bug with CS6 Encore files.
Have tried with Cyberlink removed from machine.... same problem.
    Any suggestions??

The error is: Blu-ray Error, "device error", Code "3", Note, "AS-StorageError = 97071
I imported one HD Blu-Ray MPG file encoded in Premiere Pro for Blu-Ray DVD about 4GB in size.  It was set-up with simple "Play menu".  It burns up to the point of finalization, then the above error message occurs.
I insstalled a second Blu-Ray burner (different brand) and attempted another burn but with same error message.  Also tried different brand of discs.
I have a second computer that I had previously loaded the trial version of Permiere Pro CS6, then later opted to do complete install via Creative Cloud.   CS6 Encore will burn a Blu-Ray disc on this system with the same file without any problem or error messages.
It seems to be a problem with the Creative Cloud installation on the first computer???

  • Problems burning dual layer DVDs - help...please

I'm trying to burn a movie onto a dual layer (8.5gb) DVD but my 12" G4 Powerbook doesn't like it. It doesn't recognise the DVD and spits it back out after 30 seconds or so of strange noises, whirring etc. Burning onto regular 4.7gb DVDs seems to work OK, so am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help? FYI the media is DVD +R dual layer, made by Emtec (BASF).
    Powerbook G4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Well I certainly am no expert on media, but I went to Apple's store to look at the PowerBook's spec's. On the 12" it says "Slot-load 8x SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)" and then on the 17" it says "lot-load 8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)." So it appears to me that the 12" does not support dual-layer discs. I know that it doesn't have a dual-layer burner, but perhaps it will not even let you do a dual disc one side at a time. Not sure, just guessing.

  • Problem burning slideshow to DVD

I made my first attempt with my new photo shop Elements 11 and adobe Premier, to burn a slideshow using photos and music.  I was able to burn it with no difficulty but some of my photos had been turned sideways on the finished disc. They were not this way on the slideshow.  How can I correct this for a reburn?

    Windows Only
I find its best to select a batch of images in Organizer and then click Create >> Slideshow.
You can also add captions, if all the photos already have them.
Set slide duration, transition type/duration and click OK. You can also add pan and zoom effects whilst in the project.
You can preview your slide show when the Slideshow Editor opens. Then click Output >> Edit With Premiere Elements. You will be prompted to save your PSE project - click yes.
A new project will open in PRE and you can add or change your soundtrack, fade the music on the end frame plus any other effects you may want.
The output gets sent as a single clip. To review individual slides right-click on the clip in the timeline (usually Video 1) and choose Break Apart Elements Organizer Slideshow.
You can now preview your slideshow again or render it first (for best quality) and then preview to make sure all the slides are correct. If not click on individual frames to adjust.
When you are happy click Publish+Share and choose disk.
Insert your DVD and click the rescan button until the disk drive is recognized.
Choose a pre-set. I always uncheck the box Fit Contents to Available Space. I can then move the slider up to highest quality.
Then click Burn and wait whilst the disk is written and finalized.
    Good Luck.

  • Problem burning images to DVD

I want to back up my digital photos on a DVD, so I put them in a folder to see how many I would need. The folder's Get Info panel says its contents total 3.74 GB. I have a blank DVD that says it holds 4.7 GB, but when I try to burn the contents of my folder, I get a message saying there are too many files and I have to remove some. How come? And what should I do to resolve this?
    Thanks for any help.

You may see if using a separate burn utility which can tell you if
the burn file exceeds the capacity of the recording media, helps.
One I use for DVD and CD recordable media, free, is Burn 2.0u:
    http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html
Sometimes, the folders and other hidden info required to record
content may exceed the expected limits on the media; or the
math is not exactly as thought, so the items won't fit the media.
Once you do have a collection of folders or items selected in Burn
it is very easy to make several copies and choose the disc. Since
it is all on the desktop, this gives you options outside of other apps.
There are several ways to burn data and other content to disc media
in the system; iTunes, Disk Utility, iPhoto, and in Finder. The Burn
utility is a handy tool, uses little resources, is free and works well.
(Not sure if a 'smart folder' could help,
...I haven't seen what those can do.)
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

Could you verify that burning works fine on your machine using other burning softwares say Nero. This would help to isolate the issue.

  • Artifact problems burning QT to DVD

I'm trying to burn a 3 minute QT movie that I made in FCE4 to Roxio Toast 6 and I keep getting artifacts. In preferences I choose 1x speed but when I go to burn it changes to 4x.  What can I do to defeat the artifacts and get a clean burn?  Can I use disk utility to accomplish this?  I've tried that 3 times, it burns a disc and tells me it was a successful burn but each time the disc is blank.  I have an iBook with OS 10.5.8 and have 32 GB of free space on my hard drive.  Any help will be appreciated, thanks

I converted everything to AIC to use in FCE4.
The project was DV NTSC 48.
Then you have a mismatch between your clip properties and the sequence you edited the clips into.  You have AIC clips in a DV sequence.  I strongly suspect this is the origin of your artifacts.
With all AIC clips, you should be using one of the AIC Easy Setups to create your sequence.  Use the AIC Easy Setup that best matches your clip properties.  Then place the clips in the AIC sequence.
Also, be sure to Render All before exporting your video.
