Problem Getting Video to Display on TV since Switching to OS Lion

Previous to switching the Lion OS, I used my MacBook Pro to display DVD's and iTunes videos on my television using the mini-display port HDMI adapter and HDMI cable.
Since switching to OS Lion, I cannot my computer video screen to display on the television.  When I look at "Display" in the System Preferences, MacBook Pro seem to recognize that is connected to another display output yet my television screen remains black.
Has anyone else had this issue?  Is there a setting that I need to change on my laptop?
Thanks!

I was having this same problem.  I noticed the display screen button at the top of my laptop screen near the volume and network buttons. It's the one that looks like a small TV.  The display button only showed the resolutions to choose from but then I tried conecting the HDMI cable and selecting that HDMI port on the TV when I turned on the TV.  At this time the little TV display button at the top of menu offered an option called "turn mirroring on".  I clicked on that and the display came on the TV.  It seemed too simple but I hope this helps you.

• Problem getting video from firewire camera

I've written a small app that gets video from camera and
publishes it through FMS(2). It works well with any USB webcams I
could find, but I have problems with firewire cameras. I can select
the camera in Flash settings, and getCamera() returns the
appropriate Camera object (e.g. it has the correct name, "Microsoft
DV Camera", which is what's its name in Windows), but I get
no/blank video.
Code snippet:
var myCam:Camera = Camera.getCamera();
Alert.show("Using " + myCam.name);
videoDisplay.attachCamera(myCam);
The same code and the same camera seems to work on OS X. I've
tried out two different firewire cameras on two different Windows
(XP) machines, and they consistently didn't work. They do work in
Flash Media Encoder (I'm not sure if it was written in Flash
engine), or other programs that do capture in Windows; but my
problem is that I need to inject metadata (stream.send()) into the
stream so i can't just use FME :(
Any ideas why this doesn't work? Do firewire cameras have
issues with flash/flex (for the reference, I'm using Flex2/Flash9)
on Windows XP, or am I doing something wrong here?

HI -
MPEG Streamclip does not act as a connection device between your camera and Final Cut.
It is a stand-alone application that converts the files from your camera into files that are useable in Final Cut.
The reason Final Cut does not "see" your camera directly is that the files are not usable in Final Cut - as recorded by the camera. Those same files are seen and imported in iMovie because iMovie is designed to support a wide variety of consumer formats, and converts them automatically on import to a format the iMovie can use. FCE does not have this feature for .mpg movie files. But the format the iMovie converts to is one that is not optimal for FCE.
Once you have converted the files that you want to use in MPEG Streamclip, you can store those converted files on your disk drive in a folder. Then open FCE an go to the menu File > Import > Files and navigate to where you have stored your converted files. Select them and the will be imported into FCE.
It is preferable to import using the MPEG Streamclip method, because the files that iMovie makes, are borderline usable in FCE, and if possible, should be avoided.
Hope this helps.

• Problem getting video to run in SWF

I have a student who is using Flash CS4 Pro.  She has imported an flv, chosen a skin and placed the video on the stage.  If you test by Ctrl+Enter the swf is created and plays quite happily.  However, if you go to the folder where the swf is pubished and load the swf it either opens a blank window where neither video or skin appear or a window opens with the flash player logo flashing on/off.  We've tried what we can think of like reassigning the paths in the component inspector be doesn't work.  The fla, swf and skin are all in the same root directory.
My first thought was that there may have been some change on our network that was interfering but the same student has another swf she made several weeks ago using the same method which has 4 videos in the same swf and it still works fine.  This suggests the methodology and the network are valid.
Not sure what to do.  This is the last part of the student's A level coursework due in next Friday so any suggestions really welcome.

If you test by Ctrl+Enter the swf is created and plays quite happily.  However, if you go to the folder where the swf is pubished and load the swf it either opens a blank window where neither video or skin appear
Sounds to me like a pathing problem.
Depending on how the folder structure is set up, going directly to the .swf and clicking on it in it's folder... and the video not playing... does not necessarily mean that the pathing is wrong or the .swf is broke. In fact, if the .swf video player is to be used on a Web page outside of the folder that the .swf is stored in, the .swf should NOT work when directly clicked on. That's because the pathing from the .swf to Flash assets such as the video file... pathing needs to be relative to the Web page the .swf will be used on and NOT the physical location of the .swf.
For your review:
Pathing issues
Almost always when it works on the local machine and not the server, it's a pathing problem.
You can put your Flash related files in whatever folders you want, they do NOT have to be in the root, they do NOT all have to be in the same folder. But if you have a problem and if sticking them all in the root folder works, then you know that the issue was a pathing problem.
Just remember that paths used in the .swf become relative to the Web page on which the .swf is placed, NOT it’s physical location.  So for example, if your .swf is in the flash/data folder and you use that .swf on a Web page in the root folder, you are in effect, removing that .swf from flash/data and putting it in root. So if the .swf is loading any related files (xml, images, video, etc), the path used inside the .swf to load the .xml file has to be relative to it's new location in root and then back down into flash/data. This is true even though when testing the .swf by itself, it can be inside flash/data and work just fine, since relative to it's location, the path is just fine, they are in the same folder. But if that same path is used when the .swf is placed on a page two folder levels up, the relative path has changed, the old "same folder" path will not work.
In fact if you are placing the .swf on a web page in a different folder than the .swf is stored in, and that .swf calls external assets, then direct clicking and opening of the .swf in it’s folder should NOT work! That’s because the paths to the external assets should be relative to the Web page and not the physical location of the .swf.
So just be sure that you use addresses relative to the final Web page locations (not physical file locations) and you can put the Flash related files in what ever folders you want.

• Problem getting tracks to display in the right order

My music library does not always display tracks in the desired order.  For example, after loading a concerto from a CD I find the movements are out of order.  When I try to rectify this by putting a numeral into the track title itunes takes no notice.   I've had the same problem organising talking book tracks: when I try to order the untitled tracks numerically, itunes reads the numbers oddly eg L1 01 is followed not by L1 02 but by L2 01; then it reverts to L1 02, then L2 02 etc. With letters itunes alphabet order without exception. Why does it not do so with numbers?
Does anyone have a suggestion or solution to this?  Is there an easier way to get itunes to play the track in the desired order?

Either you have the list sorted on the wrong column heading or the track numbers are not populated. See Grouping tracks into albums for more info.

• Problems getting video's on my 30gb video iPod

Hello,
I got my iPod just a few days ago and getting my music on it was no problem. But yesterday, I converted a DVD to the mp4 format en wanted to put it on my iPod.
I tried for hours but it didn't do anything (there was nothing wrong with the format) so I looked for the source of the problem. I think I found it here (the menu is in Dutch, sorry for that ):

I cannot change anything in the Video-menu.
Is there anybody here that knows how to fix the problem?
Thank you very much for the effort.
Wouter

Hello
DVD extension format are .Vob but itune can't read this format in importation module , you need to convert before in mpg o or mp4 directly with third party tools
or with quicktime pro and WinQuickTimeMPEG2 plugins for exemple

• Problems Getting video onto iPod

Hey everybody-
I have a feeling that my problem is a composite of many peoples' problems. Here's how everything breaks down: I have a Powerbook G4 running the latest version of OSX and a new iPod 60 Gig 5G (christmas present!)
-I read on the apple website that it is perfectly legal to rip your own DVD's for personal use.
-Therefore, I downloaded Handbrake and used it to rip the movie Freaky Friday which I own, to my desktop.
-The file showed up as an .mp4 on my desktop.
-I tried everything: importing it from iTunes, dragging and dropping it into iTunes library, dragging and dropping it directly onto the iPod icon in the iTunes source list.
-It showed up in the Video section of the iTunes source list, but when I tried to drag and drop it from there onto the iPod i got the same error message that everyone was getting, that it 'wasn't in the right format' with the link and everything.
-I followed the link, which basically instructed me to buy QuickTime Pro, which I did.
-In QuickTime Pro, I followed the instructions for 'movie to iPod' but the progress bar freezes up at 10%, every time.
-I tried changing the original .mp4 file to a .mov file, and it still froze during exporting.
How do I make it export into iTunes, then make it copy to my iPod without error? Pleeeeease help! I am willing to download anything and follow complicated instructions!
Thank you SO MUCH!

Your Handbrake "rip" may not meet the requirements for iPod use. Anything from the wrong dimensions to too high of a data rate could cause it to "fail".
QuickTime Pro isn't "freezing" at 10% completion. You are too impatient for the conversion. It could take a day (slower machines even longer) to convert a DVD rip to iPod friendly specs.
Plenty of lawyers in D.C. (I lived there for 50 years) would conclude that you don't own the right to "convert" the DVD to iPod format because the conversion creates a new product not intended by the copyright holders.
I doubt the police on the Metro would enforce (copyright Police force?) would take notice once you do get the film onto your iPod.
Test the "Export to iPod" setting using a 5 minute "cut". Open the Handbrake rip and copy 5 minutes of the file using QT Pro. Paste this cut into a new player window and save.
Time the export (you may be disappointed) and then you'll know how long the entire file will take to export to iPod settings using H.264 video codec.

• Problems getting video when streaming to IMac then to apple tv.

I want to stream a video onto my IMac and send to apple tv.  I can get sound but no video.  Any answers?

Hi Jonathon
Air Video allows you to stream all media formats (avi etc) from your iMac via your iPad to Apple tv. Therefore there is no need to convert your movies to mp4 format so that can stream from iTunes to Apple tv.
Any thoughts on how to get Air Video to work or reconfigure Apple TV 2 to stream all video formats from iTunes and not just mp4??

• Problem getting Videos to play back to back...

I have ripped some Music Video from DVDs and my ipod will play them fine. It just wont play them back to back. Thus in a playlist it just plays the videos that I have bought from Itunes. I can manually play the videos (ripped) but it always only then plays the others I bought and ignores the videos I have placed on the Ipod..
Any help out there..
thanks

The process is the same but the constraints are slightly different - there are plenty of threads on the subject and as long as the video complies with the specification below, it will transfer. If it isn't transferring then there is something out of spec for that particular video.

• Portrait display resolution issue since upgrading to Mountain Lion

Hello. I'm running a Mac Mini 2011 with the 2.5 GHz i5 and Radeon HD 6630m graphics. I run two monitors, one via HDMI and via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor. The HDMI connection runs landscape, the VGA portrait. Since updating from Lion to Mountain Lion, the resolution options in portrait disappear. I'm forced to use 800x1200, which stretches and distorts horribly, as opposed to the correct 1366x768 available to me in landscape.
Prior to updating from Lion to Mountain lion I didn't have any issues, so it's pretty clear this is Mountain Lion related. I'm hoping someone can help me resolve this issue.

Try holding the option key when you click on the scalled button and see if the resolution you need is listed.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

• "Preparing video for display" ****!! Project get's stuck before opening completely

I've been working in this project for almost two years. Now, I'm doing the subtitles in Final cut from Spanish to English for almost two months now, almost half way through the movie so I get a lot of renders done everyday. Since last Week my projects get stuck at "Preparing video for display". I usually go to the Autosave Vault, for some reason one of the project open, and I start working again from the hour or two of work I lost. But, whenever the projects get's to Autorender, the same message displays again, and the damned beachball appears and all goes to ****. I can't get anywork done, I've lost a lot of hours worth of work and I'm facing a deadline. I've tried trashing the preferences, but nothing. So before I drive my car into a tree i wanted to at least submit the question, to you.

LION BUT RUNNING ON IT WITH SNOWLEOPARD ROSETTA.
Best to all of you.

My guts are saying that you've a bit of an unstable installation going on, causing the instability... the fix is to perform a clean install and try working with that. You can build a new startup disk on a firewire drive or on another internal drive or partition, leaving your current startup disk alone... safest way to test this hypothesis... I'd also not install Lion if you're going to run FCP 6. Best setup for FCP 6 is likely Leopard or Snow Leopard. In reality it can be argued that the version of FCP that you are running will run the best on the OS it was written for in the first place.  Which, for FCP 6, is likely 10.5.x.
Here's a list of what is known to be a stable setup with every version of FCP: http://www.digitalrebellion.net/blog/posts/recommended_quicktime_and_mac_os_conf igurations_for_final_cut_pro.html
