Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
If that Mac is still showing a blue screen, you can force it to shut down by pressing and holding the power button. After it restarts, launch the Console utility and see if there are any messages in the "All Messages" category around the time of the problem that might explain the problem.

Is it possible to shut down the MAC automatically while being in sleeping mode?
Dear all,
on my MacPro I use a setting that after 30 minutes of inactivity, the machine moves into sleeping mode. That works well.
Additionally I'm using a setup within the energy saving section, that the Mac should shut down every day at 10:00 pm and start or wake up every day at 07:00 am.
But it seems, that, if the Mac is in sleeping mode at 10:00 pm, he cannot shut down.
Does anyone has the same experience and/or knows any help?
Thanks in advance - helee29Dear Martin,
Thanks for reply.
I checked the logs as mentioned, but honesly saying I'm not experienced enough to understand all this notices.
What I found out in the meantime by testing (try and error) is:
- if the Mac is in working mode (just the screensaver is working) the automatic shut down and restart to set times works perfectly.
- if the Mac is in sleeping mode, it doesn't shut down automatically at the set time, but makes an automatic restart at the set time
Ergo there is a problem to shut down the Mac automatically while in sleeping mode, but I still don't know what it is. -
Problems to shut down, restart my Mac it displays a message saying Safari does not allow it. I try to quit Safari and does not do it.
Have you tried using Activity Monitor to shut down Safari?
Ciao.
Have you clicked on the Safari icon in the dock and seen if 'Force Quit' is displayed?

Can't shut down my Mac desktop
Ok, so I bought a Mac to get away from PC's, and only after two days of having it, I can't shut it down. I thought Mac's weren't supposed to have this problem. Here's the deal: I downloaded MS Office and then ran the software update. It said I had to shut down Mozilla in order to finish the install. I have tried force "quitting" Mozilla, but it won't shut down. So, I tried to stop the installation and when I force "quit" it it tells me "The Window can't be closed." So, I tried to shut down my mac and it says I have to stop the install in order to shut it down. Are you serious? I bought a Mac to get away from this problem, unfortunately I am still stuck with silly little issues like this! Please help! What do I do?
Welcome to the Apple Discussions and Mac-computing.
First, what have you done to try and force quit Mozilla? Do you mean Firefox? Did you try control-click on the dock icon? Or from the drop-down click on force quit? Or command-option-esc?
How did you download MS Office? From MS or another site?
How did you try to shutdown the Mac? -
Suddenly Shut Down my mac book pro, late 2011
Hello guys, i need your help.
Last 2 weeks, suddenly my macbookpro shut down, and it makes me shock.
After a few second shut down, i try to turn it on.
it just make sound like turn on your mac and suddenly shut down again.
It shut down for 3 times and more.
When i plug in the charger, it turn on.
But after i unplug the charger it suddenly shut down again.
i try to shut down my mac properly, and when i turn on again it works.
My friends say that it could be my battery, i checked it, and my battery was normal.
And i search about this issue, some people say to reset SMC, i dont know if it would works or not.
Did reset SMC will makes you lose you data or something?
Now, i must plug the charger when i want to turn on my mac.
Did this a serious problem or not? i need you advice guys.
Thanks! No data is lost due to resetting the SMC.
But after i unplug the charger it suddently shut down again
The problem may be the adapter. Try here > Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
Hopefully your important files are backed up just in case. -
HT201250 Can I shut down my mac in the middle of a time capsule backup?
If I shut down my mac when time capsule is processing a backup, will it cause any problems?
Only a minor problem. The backup will be cancelled, so after you start your Mac up, the next backup will have to do a "deep scan" to figure out what's changed since the last (completed) backup. That will take somewhat longer than usual.

Launching Photoshop CS6 shuts down my Mac?
Every time I try to launch Photoshop CS 6 it shuts down my Mac OS X Version 10.6.8.
I have reloaded Photoshop and reloaded OS X Version 10.6.8. and nothing helps.
I also ran a hardware test which found no problems.
I made sure their are no extra plugins. Any one have any idea what is happening? I need Help!what routine system maintenance have you performed (Repair Disk, Repair Permissions, Cocktail OSX clear caches)
what specific CS6 version of Photoshop are you running
have you ran all the available Adobe updates
what is your font situation
i would trash the Photoshop preferences and see if that works -- no, try setting up a New User and test -- still no joy, uninstall CS6, reboot and reinstall CS6 and all Adobe updaters... -
Esata card shutting down my mac
I have a situation with a new esata card. I have been having FE problems with a Presonus Firestudio Mobile not syncing because it is on the same FW bus as a Lacie Quatro 2D.
It was suggested I get an esata card and I bought the newer technologie MAX power esata 6GB PCIe 2.0.
I put the esata card in slot number #2 or the 16x of my mac pro. It worked for about 5 minutes then my mac kept shutting down. No matter what I did the mac shut down. There shouldn't be a problem here. I had to take the card out and everything works normally now (no power shutdown)
Do I have the card in the wrong slot. Should it be in 3 or 4?
My drive is powered by a wall wart and presonus is FW powered. The card is esata 6.0 and my lacie is esata 3.0.
Any ideas?a card working properly shouldn't shut down your mac. Unless it's drawing too much power.
isolate your system by not using the FW devices.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 reset SMC
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 reset NVRAM
try the computer with the card; but not the esata drive; see if you still have the issue.
if you do still have the issue. I'd talk to the place of sell about return exchange or talk to the manufacture about warranty service.
if you don't. try testing the esata card with another esata hard drive. (that is if you have one) again see if you have the issue. -

Can anyone explain me what it was?Why would you want a start button to stop something?
Seriously, I would not routinely shut down your Mac. It is not necessary. Just set it to sleep in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
When you are not using it, just walk away. Things will work better that way. Most of my Macs don't get shut down except while restarting them for software updates. This might be once every couple of months. -
Can i create mcx for shut down properly mac when battery is less 5 %
Hi hello
Can i create mcx for shut down properly mac when battery is less 5 % ?
Thanks for your replyYou can create a mailing list by using the "Groups" feature of Address Book. Simply select "New Group" from the File menu. Name the group, and drag the contacts you need into the group.
In Mail, open up Preferences (under the Mail menu), and click on "Composing". Then make sure that "When sending to a group, show all member addresses" is unchecked.
The auto reply is a feature that is better done on your mail server, as you Mac can only send an auto reply when it is on, with the Mail application open. If you use dot Mac, you can set up a vacation responder through the web, and you can leave your computer switched off.
If you really want to leave your Mac on when you are on holiday, you can set up a mail rule (Preferences, Rules). -

Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware. -
