Problem: KT3 Ultra, Maxtor HD, and PCI Bus Mastering

Hello, and thanks for taking the time to read this plea for help.  I have a KT3 Ultra motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor and a Maxtor D740X (MAXTOR 6L080J4) 80 GB hard drive that I purchased back in March and originally used on my old computer with no difficulty.
Unfortunately, on my KT3 Ultra, if I enable PCI Bus Mastering in the BIOS, the system refuses to boot from the hard drive.  It boots fine if PCI Bus Mastering is turned off, but I strongly suspect that I am not getting full UDMA-class throughput with PCI Bus Mastering turned off, which I desperately need because I want to do video capturing with my ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon card.  Also, the HD LED does not light up disk activity on that hard disk.  I know that the HD LED works and is hooked up correctly because it lights up to show activity on a hard disk I have installed on the second IDE channel.  I have tried hooking the 80 GB drive to the IDE RAID ports, but the system hangs in the IDE RAID BIOS and will not boot.
This week, I also tried backing up, wiping the HD clean, and running the PowerMax diagnostic programs, all of which said the HD was operating perfectly.
With PCI Bus Mastering on, I am able to boot from a CD ROM and at least get into my Linux system, but I can't boot into Windoze 98 that way.
I am using the LILO boot loader, but I have also wiped it off with "fdisk /mbr" and tried to boot with PCI Bus Mastering turned on -- no dice there either.
I've fiddled with every relevant BIOS setting and searched in vain for an answer.  Something tells me that the UDMA interface on the hard drive may be defective -- the hard drive was an open box special.
Any help that anyone can provide would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Will Snyder

Hi,
I have KT3 Ultra ARU and Maxtor D740x 60GB too. I have no problem enabling PCI IDE BusMaster. You have done pretty good troubleshooting there and I'm on your back to say it's the harddisk's fault.
Have you tried other hard drive? Have you tried with other IDE cables?
fyi, UDMA is still enabled without PCI IDE busmaster. But I would suggest you to go claim for a hdd swap instead.

  • Odd video problem with KT3 Ultra 2-r and GeForce4Ti4400

I don't know if I should post this on the VIA forum or on the VGA forum, so I'm gonna post on both. sorry.
My system specs are on my signature, and anyways, here's my problem.
When I turn on my PC, the monitor shows jaggy white lines all over the screen (as if the refresh rate / resolution was too high) instead of showing the GeForce BIOS (right before the POST).
This is weird, since a year ago, when I got my MSI nForce/ MSI GeForce4 Ti4400, this wasn't a problem. And now I have KT3 Ultra 2 and MSI GeForce4 Ti4400 Chapmionship edition, and I do.
Not only that, but most of the times when I restart my PC, my monitor goes into POWER SAVING mode instead of showing the POST and Loading Windows screen.
I even try to go into the BIOS while the monitor is in powersave mode and it does go in, but the monitor is dead.
The monitor comes back to life as soon as it reaches the WindowsXP logon screen. But like I said, it goes into powersave mode as soon as I restart and until it reaches the WinXP logon screen.
I mean, this is a minor problem, but its a pain in the ass!!!!
Whenever I'm trying to tweak the BIOS, it will often times do this, and even if I turn the monitor off, unplug it from the PC, unplug it off the wall, when I plug it back in, it still is in powersaving mode, even though the PC is running.
    HELP!

No, my Ti4400 is not the Champ ed. The actual model number on it is 8871 ver-1.00. You can read about my problem's in the "Have you seen this?....." thread on this forum (page 7 now I think)
I haven't had a problem in the last couple days though. I removed some Reg tweaks (this is a DAW box) and ....dont luagh, turned up the heat in my house. I'm not sure if it was the Reg edit or Temp, but things are working ATM.
Nice to know I'm not alone though,

  • WIN2k, KT3 Ultra Deluxe Board, and Random Reboots

    OK.
First off, let me say, the KT3 Ultra board (Deluxe) is a very, VERY nice board, and I love it with all my heart. I'm running Windows 2000 and I get great performance on games, and just all around everything.
But, for some reason, I keep getting random reboots, and I have a hunch it has to do with the 'board.
    Here are my specs:
    AMD Athlon XP 1600+
    PNY GeForce 4 TI 4600
    MSI KT3 Ultra Board (Deluxe)
    512 megs of DDR RAM
Windows 2000 Professional, Service Pack 2 (all updates)
    Maxtor 60 GB HD
    Western Digital 60 GB HD
    HP CD-ROM Drive
    Genuine DVD-ROM Drive
    NetGear FA310TX NIC card
    SoundBlaster Live!
    Any ideas, folks?

There can be a lot of reasons why you get reboots, so difficult to point to one thing that will solve it.  Your PSU is big, so we can rule out lack of power.
I presume you have fiddled with the BIOS settings?  What are your advanced chipset settings?  In my experience lockups and reboots are caused by memory problems, so set memory to "by user" and on the slowest setings at first.
My GF4 gave reboots because the AGP slot shared IRQ11 with my networkcard.  Relocating the networkcard to another PCI slot solved it.  MY GF2 card didn't show this problem.  So check if you have shared resources.
Take out all other cards and see if it improves the situation.
Do you have one or two memory sticks.  In case of 2, try everything with one stick and also with the other to see if one of the sticks is the problem.

  • DirectX Problem KT3 Ultra + GForce ti 4600

    Hello,
I am experiencing serious problems with DirectX (both the built in 8.1 and 9.0b) under XP professional on a computer with the following configuration:
    MSI KT3 Ultra (MS6380E) Mainboard
MS StarForce GForce4 Ti 4600 Series graphics adapter (it says somthing like N1996 on the board itself near the ce logo, but any help for identifying the board is apprciated)
I tried every driver I could lay my hands on including older ones like 27.20k, 41.07xp and newer ones like 4345xp or 45.23 (directly from nvidia). Both system and VGA bios have been updated and I downloaded every patsch available from microsoft. I reinstalled my systm from scratch several times while trying ut different combinations. I solved a potential IRQ conflict (built in USB to PCI bridge and graphics adapter both on IRQ 16). I ran across some third party patch called via latency patch wich did not help noticably either.  I tried experimenting with different settings for the refresh rates for the monitor an limitng the DirectX refresh rate to 75, 65 or 60 Hz to no avail.
Frankly, I am at a loss on how to proceed from here. I reeached a state in the configuation of the system where the problems are "only" the following:
dxdiag hangs sometimes during the 8.1 and 9.0 tests of direct 3D. Darc Age of Camelot experiences hangups, flickering objects, clutter and some artifacts as well as loss of connection to the server (although my internet connect is unafected) during play depending on how much I reduce the acceleration of the card. On the lowest level of acceleration (no direct 3D) I do not have graphic problems but everything runs so slow it's no use playing at all.
    Please help!
    Andreas

I did install the 4 in 1 driver early on in the process (must have forgotten to mention it in my post). Just to make sure that I did not miss it in the current installation I reinstalled it again. No major change.
It seems that the behavior is somewhat eratic. After reinstalling the driver the system (or rather the game) ran for a couple of minutes before it started to freeze again for a couple of seconds each time with increasing frequency of those freezes. Upon leaving the game I noticed again certain flickering objects wich definitely did not flicker when I started. In short the situation got worse with time.
Since I often tried a lot of things in a row (to no lasting effect) and I think I had the best results after starting afresh after thinking some time about it (with the system switched off) I am starting to wonder if I have a thermal problem or something similar.
So I did a few tests with the side panel open but I do not think the temperatur is really that high (it's "hand warm" inside).
    Any further suggestions?

  • D-Led Problem Kt3 Ultra 2 ARU

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
I have a computer that has been running fine for about 9 months.
    Specs are:
    MB - MSI KT3 Ultra2 ARU MS-6380E
CPU - AMD Athlon XP 2100+
    RAM - 256MB Kingston PC2700
    HDD - 80GB WD 7200 RPM
    CD-ROM - Lite-on 52X

PSU - Raidmax Model KY-450ATX Max Output 350 Watts,
    +3.3V -> 24A, +5V->27A, +12V->10A
Today I just turned it on and nothing happened. All I got was a blank screen and no beeps. The D-Led has 2 red on the top and 2 green on the bottom. The manual says Initializing Hard Drive Controller-This will initialize IDE Drive and controller. Just what does this mean? Is the controller on the MB dead or is the HD dead? Clearing Cmos, changing the PSU, and changing the video card did nothing. Still no bootup screen and I have an amber light on the monitor. I can`t even get into the bios and a boot disk doesn`t work.

..."changing the PSU, and changing the video card did nothing..." Please give AMPS of other P.Su.  Also if you loaded something new or moved something before this "dying "; CPU/System temp. idle/full load. Some o/c. ? Special changes in Bios ? Some upgrade ? HD WD alone in IDE 0 and CDs in ide 1 ? What o/s ?Try taking off HD and boot with floppy or CD.

  • MSI KT3 ultra aru Western Digital 200GB raid problem

    Hi!
    This is what I've got.
    KT3 Ultra-ARU (MS-6380E)
    AMD 2000+
256 MB 333mhz RAM (AMD Compatible)
Seagate ST330630A 30GB (an old drive)
    Maxtor 6L080J4 80GB
    Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 6Y080L0 80Gb 7200rpm 2Mb UDMA133 Fluid IDE

    Promise 100 IDE-controller
    Creative Geforce MX 440
    Lite-on LTR-40125W
    NEC ND-1300 DVD
    And the configuration:
    IDE1: Seagate (Master)
    IDE2: WD1800BG (Cabel Select)
IDE3(Raid1): Maxtor 6LO80J4 (Master) and Maxtor 6Y080L0 (Slave) raided as an single drive
    IDE4(Raid2): WD2000JB (Cable Select)
    IDE5(IDE-controller1):
    IDE6(IDE-controller2): NEC ND-1300 (Master) and Lite-on LTR-40125W (Slave)
    And the Software:
I've updated all the software drivers so I've got the newest and I'm currently runnign Win2k SP3 with almost every patch installed on it.
    And finally the problem:
When I've hook my WD2000JB to the on-board raid everything seems to be working normaly. The bios finds the drive and makes a new array. Win2k boots up and finds the drive and I can create an partition. But when I've try to format it it the computer starts to freeze for a while and then acts like normal again. The HDD-led blinks as it should during the "normal" time, but when the comp. freezes it stops blinking. The formatation stops at 7% and the HDD-led stops lighting. I don't get an error eventhough it was several hours since it stoped. And the formatation takes like 30min for 1%.
When I connect the WD2000JB to the IDE3 I can format it and it acts just like normal. I even did a full system test with the System tool found on Western Digitals support site and it didn't find any errors. But when move it to the raid-IDE the errors return. I've get Error reading / writing to disk and when I've did a chkdsk I've got the "Coudn't use Device) so I did a scandisk and it found very very many errors so it completly ereased everything that was on it.
And when I've run Western Digitals program again i've get an error (Disk error read/writing) error code: 0113.
Can it be that the Western Disk doesn't work well with Raid? I've haven't heard anything about that, so...
    Best regars,
    Mathias

I've had similar problems where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. Installing Windows XP simply didn't work very good. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.

    Hey Everyone,
I have a slight problem, I had recently pruchased a KT3 ultra 2 board and a XP1800+ processor.  I had some power supply issues but now I am using a 400 ps that is rated at the amd website.  Here is the kicker,  I have continually formatted and reinstalled windows xp about 5 times.  Whenever I use the system after a clean install it seems to work for a couple of days and then one day I shut it down (using the proper method) and when I turn it on it goes through POST then says "disk error" or there is a file missing from windows.  Orginally I thought it was a virus because boot up files were corrupted or missing.  But after doing this about 5 times I tried the bios and defaulted everything to factory setttings.  The system has not crashed since then, the only problem is that my xp 1800 is now only a 1.1 ghz system.  Anyone got an answer for this one???

  • KT3 Ultra ARU Slow HD Transfer Rates

    Hello,
First, please see my system information at the bottom of this message.
I have a MSI KT3 Ultra ARU motherboard and have installed a Maxtor ATA133 60GB hard drive with 2 MB cache.  The hard drive is jumpered as Master and is connected all by itself on the IDE1 ribbon cable.  On IDE2 I have a CDRW (Master) and a CD-ROM (Slave).  My other hard drive (WD 120GB ATA100 8 MB cache) is on IDE3 and is set up in RAID 1+0 stripe.
I recently ran the Sandra file system benchmark on my hard drives with what I think are very discouraging results.  My Maxtor drive on IDE1 scored 32 MB/s and my WD drive on IDE3 came in at 23 MB/s.  Those are some stinky results aren’t they?
I checked my Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and it indicates that for my Primary IDE Channel the current transfer mode for device 0 is Ultra DMA Mode 6.  I don’t know how to check the transfer mode on my IDE3 hard drive.
Question #1:  Are my 32 MB/s and 23 MB/s results slow for my hardware?
Question #2:  If these results are slow, how can I increase the transfer rates?
    Please help!
    Thank you!!!!
    My System
    AMD Athlon XP 3000+

    TTGI TT-350SS (350W) Power Supply
    PSU Ratings: +3.3V/28A +5V/35A +12V/16A
    Windows XP Home SP2

These tranfer rates seem fine for sequential read rates. The maxtor drive is at mode 6 and the WD should be at mode 5 if its ATA100.

    Hi,
I have a KT3 Ultra ARU too, and I understand that if you use the onboard Bluetooth connection you must not use the USB connection under the blue sticker at the same time.
I think it's because the onboard Bluetooth connection and the USB connection under the sticker use the same adress (IRQ). So as long as you have no Bluetooth, like me, you can use the 4 USB connections. If you use Bluetooth connection on board, do not use the USB connection under the sticker (the left one seen from backside of your PC).
If you use an external Bluetooth it's not a problem with your 4 USB connections.
