I have few doubts ..
1.Why disk-1,2,3 have root as their owner(they r NTFS , disk is FAT) & disk doesnt
2.
[svs@mugen media]$ sudo chown -c svs disk-1
Password:
changed ownership of `disk-1' to svs
[svs@mugen media]$ ls -l

this means chown is not working ....
3.wen i hiberbate windows i cant access my ntfs drives , y?
p.s disk-1,2,3 are coloured "green" instead of "blue" in terminal as if sticky bit is set

/media is a dynamic directory, unlike /mnt, that's probably why chown doesn't work.
Changing contents of a drive mounted in some OS while it is hibernated can be dangerous. That's why Windows drives are unmounted when you hibernate Linux and that's probably why you can't access your ntfs drives if Windows is hibernated.

hidar, all.  new arch user says hi.
i'm attempting to mount an ntfs drive at /dev/sda1 to /media/Data
i'm using ntfs-3g, and wrote an entry in fstab for the drive
however, i can't launch fuse to run ntfs-3g
when i run modprobe fuse i get the error
could not load /lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/modules.dep:  no such file.
now the problem here is that i'm running 2.6.34, so
/lib/modules/2.6.34-ARCH/modules.dep should be the place modprobe is looking for the file, but it isn't.
    how can i fix this?

oh, man, gg.  i'm a noob.
    solution here.  it involves restarting.

  • Weird problem with NTFS drive

I went on and compiled my own kernel, it's not the first time i do it, but what happened to me yesterday was so unusual.
i put the kernel compilation at night, i went to sleep, the morning i had the package ready, no errors what so ever, then i went and restarted the computer, now after the kernel loads i get an error when it tries to auto mount that ntfs drive, well i thought i made a mistake in the kernel, but no, the reason it got an error was it could not find the UUID.
well, i went and tried using blkid on it, nothing was returned.
then tried to mount the partition manually, it said it contains an error and i need to run chkdsk.
i tried using the ntfsfix, nothing helped, still complains to run chkdsk.
well, tried to log in into windows from grub (nothing was changed there and it worked as before), i got it does not recognize that system file. although fdisk -l shows NTFS!
I went far and created a bootable rescue cd with some tools (windows based), it recognized the drive, but not as NTFS, just as an unformatted drive, and it have 100% freespace, this is so weird, i really don't care of the files that were there, it was just an winxp installation with outlook (and the emails are kept on the server) but what i really care is that it could be that ntfs-3g unmounted the partition some how in a wrong way causing the partition to fail? (sounds weird to me..)
i also ran chkdsk but the chkdsk could not check that partition as it said it can't access it, unknown file systems.
Lucky nothing worthy to me was deleted because i had nothing in there, but i still feel something bad happened to there, it's must have been ntfs-3g because i didn't use anything else on that partition and also i didn't use the partition at ALL (no copy/del , etc..) since the computer was up.
I tried many ways saving the partition, but no luck, everything i tried complained about wrong fs system (including windows tools).
Well, more space to archlinux now

If you have a two devices banged out, deleted them and restart.  It should auto detect the devices and load the driver.    I had a problem like this.  That worked for me.
What kind of hard drive is it.

  • Problems mounting fat drives

Whenever I try and mount either my floppy drive or my memory stick in my clie I am told that there is either a bad block or wrong file type.
I have fat (vfat) compiled into the kernel, but it still doesn't work.  I'm confident there isn't a problem with the drives.
Can anyobne suggest anything? This is quite frustrating...

Check dmesg to see if the stick is recognized as /dev/sda. If it is, run fdisk /dev/sda to see what partitions are on it.
If there are several partitions, mount the stick with
    mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/usbstick
I used to mount my stick with /dev/sda (even though it held 4 different partitions! Found that out afterwards), but today I had to repartition and format the thing, so I made one big (256MB) FAT16 partition which I now have to mount with /dev/sda1.

  • Problem mounting network drive after upgrading router firmware

    Hi guys,
It's been a while since I last posted a question of my own here, but I'm at my wits end. As I may have mentioned, I live in France, and my ISP is Free (no, not free, Free...). I've got what they call a "box" here, i.e. a sort of super-modem that will let you connect to the Internet via xDSL (and soon VDSL2), receive hundreds of TV channels, read BluRay discs, store files (videos, music, photos, what have you) on a integrated NAS, place and receive phone calls, whether via a landline (DECT) or, since recently, through a femtocell.
All in all, the package is impressive and works flawlessly. But...
(Of course, there had to be a "but)
... Yesterday, I let my "box" (it's called a Freebox Revolution, or Freebox V6--for Version 6--by the way) upgrade its firmware, reboot as it always does in such circumstances, and  since that,  the NAS won't mount in the Finder the way it used to under the Shared left pane.
Now, every time I reboot my Mac, I have to open a browser windows and type "smb://mafreebox.freebox.fr" in order mount the NAS in the Finder. I've saved the credentials (login, no password) in the keychain, hoping it would help, but it doesn't. I've got a PC running Windows 8.1 Preview at the moment, and created a shortcut to the NAS on the Desktop. Guess what? I double-click on the shortcut, and sure enough, I can access the content of the NAS from Windows, but not from the Mac.
I must add that I haven't changed anything on the Mac since, or before, upgrading the "box" firmware.
    Any ideas?

OK, you must think I'm going bananas, but my issue is gone... For now...
Seriously, what do you guys think about this problem with network drives mounting or not, depending on, I don't know, the weather, maybe?

  • [SOLVED] Cannot mount ntfs drive

Every time I try to mount my Windows 7 hdd, I receive an error:
fuse: mount failed: Device or resource busy
The commands I used to try to mount all resulted in the same error:
    sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ntfs
    sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ntfs
    sudo mount /dev/disk/by-uuid/C0940E83940E7BE2 /mnt/ntfs
Switching to root also did not remedy the error.  Putting the entry in fstab does not mount it at boot, giving the same error.

    EDIT: Solution:
As it turns out, a couple years ago, I had a mirrored RAID.  Even when got rid of the RAID, got a new drive, reformatted and installed Arch, my secondary, NTFS drive would not mount.
Here is exactly what fixed it:
Issuing the command `cat /proc/mdstat` shows all RAID arrays.  Mine showed the following:
    Personalities :
    md127 : inactive sdb[1](S)
    488386496 blocks
`sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md127` stopped the array.
`sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md127` removed the array.
    new output of  `cat /proc/mdstat`
    Personalities :
    unused devices: <none>
    `sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/1` worked.

  • Problems mounting USB drives

I am having some problems getting USB flash drives to (auto) mount on my system.
In the past, when I plugged in the device (a simple USB flash drive), it showed up in Thunar and I could click on it to mount it. Now nothing shows up in thunar when I plug in the device. dmesg shows the following, so I know the device is being recognized:
usb 2-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 14
but it isn't being assigned to /dev/sd*. fdisk -l also doesn't show the device. lsusb shows the following for the device:
Bus 002 Device 014: ID 0781:b6b7 SanDisk Corp.
I added a udev rule to automount in /media, as per the udev wiki instructions, but that didn't do anything. Installing udisks and udiskie was similarly unhelpful. I tried this with multiple USB drives (which I both confirmed were working on other machines) so it doesn't seem to be a HW problem.
    Thanks in advance.

You might try reformatting the usb drive using Disk Utility. Use MacOS Extended(Journaled). That might help.

  • Cant mount ntfs drive in os x 10.8.4

I've tried with several drives and bought software but still cant mount a pc hdd.
    Needed strongly to work.

NTFS is a windows format, not Mac.  You will have to reformat it to ExFat on a PC or use software such as this:

    Ciao.
Note that these are recommendations for use as an external HDD.

  • Can't mount NTFS drives on 10.5.8

I was given a 1TB WD external drive today that won't mount on my MBP. When I plug it in, I get a window that says, "The disk you inserted could not be read by this computer."
Under Disk Utility, I can see the drive icon and gather the info under "Format: Windows NT file system (Tuxera NTFS)" When I click to manually mount it says "Mount Failed".
I downloaded trial software from Tuxera and another from a company called Paragon. Both are system preferences that are supposed to allow the ability to write to those drives. I was hoping it would just let me read, but no such luck.
I was able to read it on a Windows machine at my neighbors so I know that the drive works.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

What should I format drive #2 as so that it will work on my Mac as well as his PC?
NTFS will be fine. you might want to uninstall the other NTFS apps currently on your Mac and install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver instead.
alternatively, you could format the drive for Mac and install MacDrive or [_*HFS+ for Windows*_|http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows> on his PC - @ your expense, of course

  • Mount USB NTFS drive at boot

I'm trying to get my NTFS formatted USB disk to mount at boot. I'm using FSTAB, but it fails with an error when it tries to mount- only problem is, arch boots so quickly I can't see it. It works fine mounting manually afterwards (using mount -a or explicitly telling it to). It also works fine within XFCE4, using thunar/volman.
I suspect the probem is that the drive hasn't been properly initalised when it's being booted.
The best solution, would be to have some kind of process that doesn't just mount drives when they're plugged in, like happens now, but that also just mounts all drives it finds that aren't already mounted. Is there anything that does this?
The second best solution would be to make arch run a mount command at the very end of boot- possibly and addendum to on of the rc files? I don't really want to do this, since it just seems a bit messy.
    Cheers for any help!

Looks like ntfs module doesn't load immediately on the boot, just a little bit later so system cannot mount ntfs drive in the boot time. I see simple solution. Just add mount string into /etc/rc.local. rc.local starts at the end of boot process so usb device initialized and ntsf module loaded:
    mount /mnt/Terra
    or
    mount -o remount /mnt/Terra

  • [Solved] Non-root user cannot access mounted ntfs filesystem

    Hi -,
i have a dualboot system (arch/xfce + win7) and i use a ntfs partition /dev/sda2 to store files i use with both operating systems. I added the partition to fstab and it gets mounted, but i cannot access it with my non-root user. With root it works fine...
    My fstab:
    # cat /etc/fstab
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0

    LABEL=root / ext4 defaults 0 1
    LABEL=swap swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda2 /media/sda2 ntfs defaults 0 2
Is there any option that allows all users to use the mounted device? Or how is this usually done ...

See: NTFS-3G for important setup information.
    My fstab line looks like:
    /dev/sdb1 /media/Win_USB ntfs-3g uid=1000,gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=0022 0 0
This sets up some important parameters which the NTFS-3G Wiki Page covers.  Basically, "ntfs" is only a basic driver and is built into the kernel.  "ntfs-3g" is a much better, and less disk-eating, driver that you should install and use if you need the drive in Linux any more than occasionally.  My fstab line makes my user (1000) the owner and the masks lets me write and etc to it.  When you install NTFS-3G it is automatically used when you use the mount command to mount NTFS drives.  In fstab, as above, you would specify it explicitly.
You can find your own user number by entering "id" at a terminal.

  • [KDE] Force ntfs drives to be case insensitive. How?

    Hi to all,
I use KDE and I mount usb ntfs drives with the applet (no fstab configs).
I would like to configure KDE and ntfs-3g to mount ntfs drives using the mount option "windows_names" to force linux to consider that filesystem as case insensitive (as is the default under Windows XP).
Is there any config file I can use to set such an option?
    Thank you,
    Xwang
PS I don't know if it is the correct forum to post such a question. In case it isn't, can some moderator move the discussion to the correct forum, please?

    Short Answer: No.
I did some digging and it looks like this is not possible to set in a config file.
KDE uses udisks "under the hood" to mount filesystems. In most cases, KDE just asks udisks to use its default settings. However, sometimes KDE will pass along extra mount options. For example, KDE forces udisks to use the flush option on vfat volumes as a result of this bug report (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273792). This is all done in the source code (solid/solid/backends/udisks2/udisksstorageaccess.cpp).
UDisks has a bunch of default options, but they are also set in the source code (http://cgit.freedesktop.org/udisks/tree … lesystem.c). You could recompile with those defaults changed if you wanted to.
The KDE Solid backend for hardware has some plain text rules files in /usr/share/apps/solid/actions where you might be able to intercept KDE and insert your own program. Probably it is not worth the trouble.

  • Help Reading NTFS Drive

    Hello,
My fiancee recently got a MacBook Pro to replace her aging PC. She has an external Maxtor 300GB hard drive formatted in NTFS with ALL her photos, music and files on it. None of the Macs in our household (all running 10.4.9) can recognize the disk. According to Apple, Tiger should at least be able to read this disk, but it cannot.
I even took the Maxtor to the Apple Store and they had no idea why it wouldn't work.
I know other people have had similar problems with NTFS drives. I've searched the forums, but I haven't found any answers.
    Any advice?
    -Dustin

What you can do is put the hard drive inside another
hard drive case known to be Mac compatible.
    http://www.macsales.com/ sells such hard drive
cases for notebook drives. Just verify whether the
drive is Parallel ATA/IDE or SATA before getting the
case. It may just be that the drive case it
currently is in does not have the correct firmware
that is industry spec, and thus why the Mac can't
    read it.
Ohhh, that makes sense. What about a firmware update to the drive? I'll check Maxtor's site.
    Thanks!

  • Some NTFS drives will not mount - PLEASE HELP

For years I have heard "Apple fan-boys" preaching about how MAC is much better than PC.  I am one of the idiots that bought into the hype, and I am regretting it tremendously.  I spent over $4000 this month converting my family's computers from PC to Mac, and I am finding it to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life.  I have had nothing but problems.
My latest and greatest problem is getting my Mac(s) to mount and read some NTFS drives.  I know NTFS does write on MAC without external software, but I am not trying to write NTFS with my Macs.  I bought a Glyph 8TB external hard drive that is formatted for Mac.  I am simply trying to take five different NTFS external hard drives, and drag their data onto my new 8TB Glyph drive that is formatted to Mac.  Here is where it gets weird.  I have 2 Samsung 500GB drives (NTFS) that mounted automatically, read and data transferred to my new Mac formatted drive (HTP+) without any problems.  But I have 2 Glyph 6TB (NTFS) drives, and a Toshiba 2TB (NTFS) drive - none of which will mount.  They didn't mount automatically, like the Samsung drives.  They do all show up in disk utility, but when you click "mount" is gives you the "mount failed" error (with the "repair" option grayed out, and unavailable).  When plugged back into a PC, all three of the drives function perfectly - so clearly the drives are fine.  I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help.  I have spent an entire day of my life searching forums for resolutions on this one simple issue.  I see a ton of people are having similar issues.  Unlike PC forums that have always been easily able to resolve my major issues with a quick search, it seems that these NTFS mounting issues have Apple, and the entire Apple community, stumped.
To anyone considering the Mac vs. PC conversion, think long and hard before you convert to Mac.  The Macs are more fun for video, music and photo editing.  But for every other practical application I find that PC was much better.  I am regretting giving Apple over $4000 of business.  I wish that I could return all 4 Macs that I purchased.
    My relevant system info:
    Macbook Pro 13"
    Intel i7, 8GB memory, 750GB HD
    OS X 10.9.4

I can't seem to find a way to edit my initial post (stupidly, it only shows the edit tab on replies).  I just want to correct the 6th sentence of my original post.  It was meant to read:
"I know NTFS does NOT write on MAC without external software, but I am not trying to write NTFS with my Macs."
