[SOLVED] Cannot mount ntfs drive

Every time I try to mount my Windows 7 hdd, I receive an error:
fuse: mount failed: Device or resource busy
The commands I used to try to mount all resulted in the same error:
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ntfs
sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ntfs
sudo mount /dev/disk/by-uuid/C0940E83940E7BE2 /mnt/ntfs
Switching to root also did not remedy the error.  Putting the entry in fstab does not mount it at boot, giving the same error.
fdisk -l reveals the following:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders, total 1953525168 sectors

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.
EDIT: Solution:
As it turns out, a couple years ago, I had a mirrored RAID.  Even when got rid of the RAID, got a new drive, reformatted and installed Arch, my secondary, NTFS drive would not mount.
Here is exactly what fixed it:
Issuing the command `cat /proc/mdstat` shows all RAID arrays.  Mine showed the following:
Personalities :
md127 : inactive sdb[1](S)
488386496 blocks
`sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md127` stopped the array.
`sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md127` removed the array.
new output of  `cat /proc/mdstat`
Personalities :
unused devices: <none>
`sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/1` worked.

  • Cannot mount external drives

    Hi all!
    I have an 2010 imac i5 32GB RAM, running on 10.9.2.
All of a sudden my machine does not mount ANY extrenal hard drive. It recognises them in Disk Utility, but they appear greyed and cannot be mounted. Not even disk repair. Last week though the drives were mounting on the system without any problems.
Yesterday I have upgraded the OS to 10.9.2. (from 10.6.8). Still the same problem, the drives are recognisable in DU but cannot be mounted.
All of the disks I've tried are NTFS format (originally formatted on a pc). Funny thing is I have VMware Fusion on my mac runing a virtual Windows 7 pc. Windows do recognise the drives and mount them without problem, but not the mac.
Also note that I'm using Tuxera NFS to work with these drives with no problem so far, until now.
Also checked the cables, I'm connecting the drives though USB ports, they are ok.
    Any suggestions?

just guessing you are using USB to mount the external. you may need to use two usb ports to mount the drive. that means a cable with two usb connectors which should provide enough power to the external.

  • [Solved-sortof] Mounting dvd drive /dev/hdc

My dvd drive is not mounting for some reason, I thought maybe I just needed to restart and that it would mount again but no luck, this is what I get:
    mount /dev/hdc /test
    mount: no medium found
I put the same DvD in my cdrom/dvd drive and it mounts so i know it's not the dvd. I thought well, this is a dell shipped dvd drive so maybe it died, I'll give it a test. I slap the dvd in the drive, since it's the master cd drive it shoudl load a cd at bootup and it does, loads Fedora dvd image easily. I did upgrade something this morning, mostly gnome stuff, so I am thinking it's one of the packages assuming I don't have /dev/hdc on my computer. Is there a way to see what's going on?
    Quick Edit
I did a quick edit to see what exactly was going on, I am far from a linux pro, but I do have some common sense. I took gdm / hal off my daemons list and rebooted. Now from command linue I logged into root and tried to mount the drive /dev/hdc and it worked perfectly flawless, no errors. So I am guessing this has to do with a hal problems that was caused during an update. Any further help would be much appreciated though because I don't know where to go from here.
    Edit again
I solved my little "issue" apparently it was just the dvd I was trying, for some odd reason my dvd drive was refusing to auto-load the dvd movie. Yes I burned a dvd movie, I do own the original copy, I just burn a backup incase of dmg / loss. The original dvd loads fine with no mounting issues. The dvd I burned works in a dvd player, and on my secondary dvd/rw drive, I don't like watching movies on the dvd/rw drive though because of the fact that it's read capabilities is much slower. I am still puzzled on why my dvd drive doesn't like to mount / read it correctly.

not sure, but in order to mount cds/dvds, I think you must use the -o loop flag

  • 10.9: cannot mount westerndigital drive usb3 external, but in 10.8 yes

please why is my text shown on white background? can i change this?
i could not mount my 2 external wd drives (mypassport 2,5" 2TB)
(USB3.0) since install of 10.9 on my 2 brand new macs. (imac 27" i5 late 2013 and mbair i7 mid 2013)
before, with 10.8 it worked fine!
i thought the wd drive is faulty, so i got a new one by warranty, and sent the "old" back. it took only 5 days to get the swap by wd.
i could not mount the new drive either under 10.9
but today i installed techtool pro 7.0.2, did nothing but a reboot and after that, i plugged it into my imac with 10.9, it mounted correctly on my imac, the first time ever! and showed a techtool symbol as drive symbol instead of the orange colored usb symbol.
appearantly techtool pro 7.0.2 installed something into 10.9 which helps the system mount discs?
    - i never did lock the drive with the wd security app
    - before that, i tried to remove all wd related stuff and uninstalled every single wd app and driver, still no mount !
    - before that, apple disctools under 10.9 did not show the drives in the left column, as no other harddisc app did. (drive genius)
    - i can mount both drives on the old mbair with 10.8, my wife´s mac
    - wd drive utilites would show the disc, but not mount, if i tried to format it, it showed an error after 1min: cannot format disc,
as it cannot be mounted. (or so..)
    - now, after install of techtool pro 7.0.2, when i plug the drive into my imac, it is mounted correctly, but there is
always another volume mounted by default "wd drive unlock volume" which says "your wd drive is not locked, so you can not unlock it)
    weird?
i still cannot mount the wd drive on my new macbook air with 10.9,
    etre check lists as difference:
    imac:
    Kernel Extensions:
com.wdc.driver.USB.64.10.9          (1.0.1 - SDK 10.9) (today mount possible for the first time since weeks)
    macbook air:
no wd driver at all (and no mount possible)
    any idea?
    thanks

first, you should try reinstalling 10.5.4. download the [combo update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1054com boupdate.html] and run it. If that doesn't fix the issue, you can use full system restore from TM to go back to a time before the troubles started. to do that boot from the leopard install dvd, once past the language screen go to the Utilities menu at the top and choose "restore from backup".

    3.wen i hiberbate windows i cant access my ntfs drives , y?
p.s disk-1,2,3 are coloured "green" instead of "blue" in terminal as if sticky bit is set

/media is a dynamic directory, unlike /mnt, that's probably why chown doesn't work.
Changing contents of a drive mounted in some OS while it is hibernated can be dangerous. That's why Windows drives are unmounted when you hibernate Linux and that's probably why you can't access your ntfs drives if Windows is hibernated.

hidar, all.  new arch user says hi.
i'm attempting to mount an ntfs drive at /dev/sda1 to /media/Data
i'm using ntfs-3g, and wrote an entry in fstab for the drive
however, i can't launch fuse to run ntfs-3g
when i run modprobe fuse i get the error
could not load /lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/modules.dep:  no such file.
now the problem here is that i'm running 2.6.34, so
/lib/modules/2.6.34-ARCH/modules.dep should be the place modprobe is looking for the file, but it isn't.

I have a Gen 2 connected right now, it most definitely uses UMS. I have a Gen 4 at home that also uses UMS. I've got to assume your Gen 3 would as well.
Does it go to the "USB Drive Mode" screen when you plug it in?
Edit: Do remember having an issue one time where it would not go into USB mode. Rebooting the Kindle fixed it. On my Gen 2, you would go to the Home screen, then hit menu and settings, hit menu again and there's an option for "Restart".

  • Cannot see ntfs drive after trying macfuse

I seem to have messed things up. I could once plug in an external ntfs drive and read it just fine. But then I thought about writing to it, so I tried macfuse with ntfs-3g. I couldn't get it going so I uninstalled according to their FAQ. Now I can't even see the ntfs drive. One note: if I go through disk utility it shows the drive being recognized and mounted. But /Volumes/mydrive is empty.
    Thoughts?

the superdrive,  it works fine in osx not in windows 8 on boot camp

  • Cant mount ntfs drive in os x 10.8.4

I've tried with several drives and bought software but still cant mount a pc hdd.

NTFS is a windows format, not Mac.  You will have to reformat it to ExFat on a PC or use software such as this:

    Ciao.
Note that these are recommendations for use as an external HDD.

  • Can't mount NTFS drives on 10.5.8

I was given a 1TB WD external drive today that won't mount on my MBP. When I plug it in, I get a window that says, "The disk you inserted could not be read by this computer."
Under Disk Utility, I can see the drive icon and gather the info under "Format: Windows NT file system (Tuxera NTFS)" When I click to manually mount it says "Mount Failed".
I downloaded trial software from Tuxera and another from a company called Paragon. Both are system preferences that are supposed to allow the ability to write to those drives. I was hoping it would just let me read, but no such luck.
I was able to read it on a Windows machine at my neighbors so I know that the drive works.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

What should I format drive #2 as so that it will work on my Mac as well as his PC?
NTFS will be fine. you might want to uninstall the other NTFS apps currently on your Mac and install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver instead.
alternatively, you could format the drive for Mac and install MacDrive or [_*HFS+ for Windows*_|http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows> on his PC - @ your expense, of course

  • [SOLVED]Cannot mount partitions with PCMANFM --no longer an issue

    Hi,
I have searched and searched and pulling my hair out on this issue. I am using PCMANFM .9.10 on an LXDE install using the Arch x86 iso.  My HD contains several linux partitions and a FAT32 partition.
I am not able to mount these partitions in PCMANFM.  I am able to mount my usb flash drive
When trying to mount a partition in PCMANFM I get a "not authorized to perform operation" error message.
Today, June 11 I partially rewrote this due to the lack of response I am getting on this problem.
    1. did a reinstall of Arch & LXDE today.  I've done two or three installs. dbus is in daemons in /etc/rc.conf
    2. initially the partition icons did not show up
    3. then, I installed gvfs and added 55-my-conf.pkla in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/
    4. With that the partition icons show up in PCMANFM
    5. But I still get the "not authorized to perform operation" message

    Still didn't work!
Either this is a bug or I have a permission problem somewhere.
Can you please advise how to do this or point me to a recent tutorial to be able to  auto mount other partitions not using /etc/fstab?  Some of the older posts refer to hal or other package that have been deprecated.
    Thanks
Edit: latest. It seems that I must mount the desired partition from the terminal. example: $sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
then can edit it from PCMANFM by going to / and then /mnt. Apparently I do not have to manually unmount.

    The 55-my-conf.pkla has this content:
    [Storage Permissions]
    Identity=unix-group:storage
    Action=org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount;org.freedesktop.udisks.drive-eject;org.freedesktop.udisks.drive-detach;org.freedesktop.udisks.luks-unlock;org.freedesktop.udisks.inhibit-polling;org.freedesktop.udisks.drive-set-spindown;org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount-system-internal

    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f

    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    #exec startxfce4
    exec startlxde
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    At /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy
    I changed <action id="org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount-system-internal">
mount a system-internal disk at <allow_active> from "auth_admin_keep" to "yes".

  • [SOLVED] Cannot mount usb (as normal user)

    Hello
I'm facing this problem for the first time, but can't tell if it came after an update or an unexpected reboot (light went out).
I'm using latest kde (4.9.2?), and the latest kernel,
    Linux gantz 3.6.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Nov 5 11:57:22 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
When I plug any usb device, kde ask me what to do. When trying to mount it, either from the kde "mount" plasmoid or from dolphin, I get a "Not authorized" error. Mounting via cli with sudo works fine.
After doing some research, I found that I need to be in the storage group in order to be able to mount, so I checked, and I was already on the storage group. Next.
More research sent me to lots of pages talking abour .xinitrc, wich doesn't exists (on my home, at least). Also tons of pages where talking about somethin like "exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch session-manager" (I login via kdm), but the ck-launch-session is not found on my computer either.
So i'm stucked right now, and don't know how to proceed, any clues? Thanks

Solved, it was a polkit issue, don't know what caused it, since i didn't touch any config file/dialog.
after changing allow any to "yes" in this section
    <action id="org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount">
    <description>Mount a device</description>
    <description xml:lang="da">Montér en enhed</description>
<message>Authentication is required to mount the device</message>
<message xml:lang="da">Autorisering er påkrævet for at montere et fil system</message>
    <defaults>
    <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
    <allow_inactive>yes</allow_inactive>
    <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
    </defaults>
    </action>
on file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy, everything came back to normal, and i'm able to mount usb devices.
pd @Raynman: removing myself from the storage group did not change anything.
that's not a fix, it's a crappy workaround. You are not supposed to touch these files, they will be overwritten on an upgrade. My guess is that you are simply not using systemd and therefore you are not in an active logind session. You have to boot with systemd, as mentioned in the news. Everything should then just work out of the box.

  • Cannot mount external drive on network when no user logged in

We have a few workstations on our network that have multiple accounts for users in order to preserve preferences, etc. An external hard drive attached to the each workstation, holds work done on that station by the different users. When all users are logged out, the external drive does not appear as a mountable device when trying to log into the workstation from another computer; only the internal drives are seen and mountable.
Is there a way to make the external drive visible and available for mounting over the network when no user is logged in? The external drive is set to ignore permissions for that drive in the get info window.
Additionally, when a user is logged in to the workstation and someone tries to log in over the network to access the external drive, the drive is sometimes available over the network and other times not. What causes this inconsistency?
    thx, j

You really want to format it HFS+ wiyh GUID Partition scheme to ensure your data transfers correctly...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(On IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Not sure if that'll make it see it or not, but your data will be better. Besides, you should be able to install to that then & maybe boot from it to ease matters.
