  • Problems with open wifi / redirect

    Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Playbook and have some problems connecting to a hotspot. I'm studying abroad and living on the campus area, which means i can only use the wifi of the university. It is an open wifi / hotspot and after connecting one should normaly get redirected to the login page.
    Here's the problem:
after connecting, i keep on getting the message "couldn't resolve hostname".
I searched for hours now but nothing seems to work for me. Disabled pop-up blocker, set private browsing off, nothing helped. Anyone got some hints what else i could try? Seems weird, as i can connect using my laptop and see all the network information (DNS, Gateway, ...) and i got the same settings on the PB (checked it @ wifi status).
whatever i try, I cant get to the login screen  (tryed everything i found in forums: typed DNS adress in browser -> nothing, typed the adress of the login page when connecting my laptop -> same error)
Any idea what else to try?
(This problem is realy annoying, as i cant access AppWorld without the Wifi - not via tithering and not using my laptop as i'd need a BB smartphone to do so [this issue exists for a year now and hasnt been fixed - am i the only one having a PB but no BB phone?!^^])
    Thanks in advance
    EDIT:
also removed wifi settings several times, restarted tablet several times, ... :-(

I had similar issue at a hotel, I deleted teh wifi setting on playbook for it
Made a new one, connected to wifi and waited 2 min so it showed green connection, then went to browser and agreed to terms, waited a min and got the couldn't resolve hostname. So i tapped on bing in browser about ten times and got connected for the rest of the day.

After of it, I checked that the app had a new version available for downloading, I took a backup of my ipad and then upgrade this app, but is the same problem, all I want is to save the projects I had in this app, I´m afraid that if I delete this app and re-install it, probably I loss my projects.
Thanks for your help indicating how I can save my projects and see them for example in an iphone for assurance that data is not lost.

  • Open wifi in hotels

    Hi
I have 2 playbooks that we're trying to use in a hotel.
the problem we seem to have is this - the wifi is open and gives you access when you enter the code on the first web page you see - which is pushed at you byt the hotel servers.
Problem is that the playbook hangs on obtaining IP address
I have a friend who is there now with that problem - what she has done is to link her iphone then tether the playbook to the iphone
    A bit odd...

I discovered that if I was having difficulty getting the hot spot login page, I had to disable Bluetooth on the the Playbook.  I think it knew it was having problems connecting via WiFi, so it tried to run out the Bridge connection.

  • My iPhone 5 is experiencing problems with the Wifi at home. It shows that it is connected to the wifi but anything that uses wifi doesn't load. The wifi works sometimes however but this is rare. How do I fix this?

My iPhone 5 is experiencing problems with the Wifi at home. It shows that it is connected to the wifi but anything that uses wifi (apps etc) doesn't load content and just looks like it's loading forever but nothing ever comes. However the wifi and wifi/internet dependant apps work sometimes but it's rare. How do I fix this?

    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
              8.8.8.8
              8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the  Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must click Apply in order for any changes to take effect.
    2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

  • IPod touch won't connect to an open WiFi Network

I am trying to help my cousin with a issue on his brand new iPod touch 32 GB. He was having issues with 3.0 and is now having the same issues with 4.0. The issue is that when you go to the network settings to connect to a open network it will show the correct network and let you seem like it is connecting, but the WiFi symbol will not show up in the top right of the iPod. If you go back to the WiFi setting the name of the network will change at random to strange names, for example the name of the network is Netgear and it will change to Nutgear and a bunch of other strange names. It has also done this with open WiFi networks at Starbucks, B&N etc. My iPhone works perfectly on the same networks. I have tried everything listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398 Any ideas?

Welcome to Apple Discussions. In the future, you might want to post questions like you have as a new post as we like discussions to stay on topic where possible. However, having said all of that, I'm happy to try and help you fix your problem.
WiFi problems are not the easiest to fix as there is usually a lot of information missing in user questions - like router make/model, encryption used, whether or not you have chosen to hide your network name, etc. So, instead of a specific answer, I'm going to give you the general instructions that fix most WiFi problems.
    1. Reboot your router (just unplug the power cord)
    2. Reset the touch network settings - tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    3. When the touch restarts, tap Settings > WiFi > Other and re-enter your network name, security, and network password.
If you continue to have problems, you can find more tips here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
If you need to repost, please start a new discussion and I would go further an suggest you do it in the iPod touch > Using iPod touch group where it will get more visibility.

  • Problem with public WiFi requiring disclaimer on iPhone 5

My iPhone has a problem with public WiFi networks that require you to hit the button accepting a disclaimer before you can browse on the Internet. When I click on the network the Log In header pops up but eventually times out with an "Error Opening Page".
The only work around I have found is to disable cellular data access and then try to connect to the WiFi network.  Works fine with cellular data turned off as the disclaimer page pops up quickly.
The big difference I see is the http:/www.apple.com pop up above the Log In header where it's blank if I do not turn off cellular data. If I time out of the WiFi network I'm forced to redo the cellular data on/off to log back in.
    WiFi otherwise works fine.
Anyone found a workaround besides having to manually turn on/off cellular data?

    Hello Enigma118,
It sounds like you are pressing your Sleep/Wake button and the phone is taking a screenshot. I recommend starting by closing all the running apps on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that and restart the phone and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If it persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes with this article:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
And restore it from your backup with this article:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • MacBook refuses to connect to Open Wifi at University

I think I have a really bizarre problem.
Normally, wireless performance with my black MacBook has been great. I can connect to my home WiFi point (with WEP), and other open wifi points (i.e. libraries, coffee houses, even Apple Stores.) But an issue occurs when I try to connect to my university's wifi network. It is fully open, with no encryption, so I don't think that is the problem.
What happens is this: The MacBook gets the IP address from the network, gets the subnet mask, but absolutely refuses to get the IP address from the router; it constantly times out. At first I thought it was just a Mac thing (we are primarily a windows based school, at least in the labs) But I see other MacBook and MacBook Pro users connecting to the network no problems. I asked the IT department and they are just as confused as me.
I reinstalled OS X, thinking that it was some issue with the old data that I transferred over from my powerbook, but it still performs the same way.
...In fact, I was never able to get my 12" powerbook to connect either.
Does anyone have any idea what the heck is going on?
    Regards,
    Anthony

This may be better answered in a Windows compatibility forum.  I've requested it be moved there.

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

  • I cannot access to open wifi netowrks from my ipod!

So the problem is that, whenever i go out or to school my ipod gets wifi connections. Some of them are locked but some are open. When i try to access the unlocked/open wifi networks it shows tht it is connected but when i go to safari or facebook or youtube it does not let me go on the internet becuase it says tht it is not connected to the internet. But the wifi network is there and there is a check mark beside it! So why isnt it working? My ipod only lets me connect to wifi networks which you provide a password for, but not the ones tht are open and do not need passwords. Why is this happening? Is there a problem in my ipod?
    PLEASE HELP!
    --R.M.

A lot of the free/open wifi spots require that you open Safari/browser and agree to the terms and conditions before access is allowed.  However, some spot use Java or Flash to log in and since those are not supported on the iPod you can't gain access.
You best bet is to contact the people who know about the specific spots and ask them how to log in and if iDevices are supported.

  • Messages captured on open wifi-any protection, do I need a VPN?

So much of our communications now happens with email and on web sites. You do your banking, exchange emails, log on with passwords, and many other things that define your identity. What's possible today is that someone can watch the communications between your computer and the internet onto other web site. They can see your passwords getting transmitted across and then record them and grab your identity. This is mainly a problem when you access open WiFi at cafes and often there is "free" WiFi available. Any 14 year old in the proximity can be capturing the information leaving your computer and going over that WiFi connection. That is what a VPN protects. Can Foxfire protect here?

The only reason for the RV325 would be if you had so many simultaneous users that you exceeded the processing capacity of the Mac Mini. However, I'm guessing that the limiting factor is far more likely to be your Internet connection speed. Unless you have a fibre-optic link at 1Gbps, I'd not be concerned. Even then, the MacMini has ample power to do what you need unless you have quite severe requirements.
As Linc Davis said, it should be fine if you have OS X and iOS clients. It'll probably be OK with other clients too—just not as seemless.

  • How do i stop it from connecting to every open wifi within range?

i use wifi at home. that's it. i don't like connecting to foreign wifi connections. the galaxy s3 is set up to connect to any open wifi connection it sees. i was turning the corner on my street this evening and my phone connected to the house on the corners wifi. then a second later as i was driving away it went out of range. then it takes minutes to connect back to 4g. i can't find a setting to change this.

The problem is not that it finds available networks per se. After you set up a connection to your home wifi you select remember this connection. This way when you come home it will auto connect.
Because your phone is finding available networks does not mean your on them. If your neighbor is running an open wifi network they deserve what they get when its hacked into.
Leave the Auto feature on, but on each wifi network it finds in your home area just long press the network and select FORGET network. if you saved your home wifi it will auto connect and you will not be using 3/4G data on your phone.
    good luck

  • I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did).

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • How to create open wifi under domain.

If you want the users to have access to the corporate network/domain they need to be on the same network or have routes between the network allowing access.
If you want the domain to authenticate the users for WiFi access, you need to enable 802.11x authentication between the access points and assuming Windows, Network Policy Server.

i am having problems connecting to wifi at home , i want to do a master reset but cant save to icloud without using wifi ?? any ideas ??

If you can't perform an iCloud backup (which requires wifi), back up to your computer with iTunes.  Connect your phone to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of your phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now.
To troubleshoot your wifi, try unplugging your wireless router for 15 seconds, the plug it back in.  Then go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Reset Network Settings (note: this erases passwords for previously joined networks).  Then rejoin your wifi and see if it works properly now.
