Microsoft SQL Server Express LocalDB / Windows Azure Powershell install fail - SQL writer failed to start

I'm trying to install Windows Azure PowerShell on my Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise laptop. As a prerequisite, it needs to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, I but keep receiving an error:
Service 'SQL Server VSS Writer' (SQLWriter) failed to start. Verify that you have
sufficient privileges to start system services.
The service that it tries to use by default is the Local Service. I verified that it has log on as a service privileges and even did a restart. Same error.
any ideas?

Hi ,
According to your description, when you install SQL Server 2012 Local DB , it encounter the error about SQLWriter. We need to verify if you invoke SQLLOcalDB.msi directly, and check
MSSQL service is running and other service’s status. In addition, you can go to event viewer and check the error logs for analysis.
There is a similar issue about Service SQL Server VSS Writer and troubleshooting SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, you can review the following article.

  • Problem: VSS error with 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool' installed

When 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool' is installed, shadow copies cannot be enable and backups fail.  When attempting to enable shadow copies, we get a "volsnap" error:  "The shadow copies of volume X were aborted because
of a failed free space computation".  After uninstalling the "Tool", VSS works.  Reinstalling "Tool" causes the problem to return.
While the error suggests a space issue, there is plenty of space on the server's two volumes.  Additionally, another 100GB volume was added and VSS storage was allocated to it; still received the error.
Issue seems to point to 'SQL Server Backup to Windows Azure Tool'.
Environment:  Hyper-V guest:  "Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard" with "SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard".  Using "Azure Storage" for SQL backups.
    Suggestions?

    Hello,
Yes, we have a confirmed interference between the tool and the VSS Framework. This was identified very recently and is under investigation by the product group. Since the issue is within the filter driver shipped by the tool, that unfortunately means that
you currently need to choose between the tool and a working VSS Framework. If the latter is more important, then uninstall the tool (that will require a restart).
We apolologize for the inconvenience. I'm going to try to get the home page of the tool updated to avoid other situations like yours. Hopefully we should see a new version of the tool soon.
As a side note, recent versions of SQL Server can directly use Azure Storage as backup target, see

  • Define ODBC to sql server express 2008 on AZURE VM

    Hello,
I defined virtual machine in AZURE with windows server 2008.
I installed SQL SERVER 2008 R2 SP2 Express on the virtual machine.
My goal is to connect from access 2010 to the SQL Server.
I defined endpoint: TCP, public port:57500, private port:1433
I defined an inbound rule in VM firewall: port 1433 opened for the database engine
I defined sql server to allow network login.
I am trying to define ODBC connection but it does not work.
I use the following settings in ODBS form:
Server: VM DNS Name (like: XXX.cloudapp.net),57500
Login ID: login name to SQL Server
    Password: password to SQL Server
Can you help me with the correct settings so I will be able to connect to SQL Server?
    Thank you for your help

    Hello,
Which error message did you received when connect to SQL Server Express instance with OBDC?
Please verify you had did the following configuration:
1.Make sure that TCP/IP is enabled for SQL Server Express in SQL Configuration Manager.
    2. Configure SQL Server to listen on the TCP protocol 1433.
    3. Configure SQL Server with mixed mode authentication and the login you used  is valid.

  • How to install SQL Server Express in Windows 10

    Windows 10 x64.

Setup in not started without any messages.
There is no Setup.exe in Task Manager.
There is no errors in Windows Logs (Event Viewer).
There is no any SQL Server folders in Program Files or Program Files (x86).
    Compatibility with Windows 7, 8 doesn't help.
    Was tested english versions:
    SQL Express 2008 R2 SP1 x64, SQL Express 2008 R2 SP1 with Tools x64,
SQL Express 2014 x64, SQL Express 2014 with Tools x64.
How to install any version of SQL Express?
    Thanks in advance.
So, I can reproduce this problem.
By default windows have not .Net 3.5 installed, but SQL Server tools need it.
When I run sql setup on fresh windows it started normally.
If run .net setup when sql setup already running it's OK.
But if you exist from sql setup (or not run it) and install .net in Windows Components it's impossible to run SQL setup.

     Do

    to install .net framework 3.5,
just go to control panel -> programs and features -> turn windows features on and off -> check .net framework 3.5

  • Install SQL Server Express on Windows 8.1

I've tried every version I can get my hands on (2008, 2012, 2014), and get errors of various kinds every time:  Just a few:
    - the service won't start with error 2146885628.
    - "An error occurred for a dependency of the feature causing the setup process for the feature to fail."
    - "Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed."
I especially like this one during/after an install:
What version should I use?  I just need some version, any version, to do some testing with.
Second, where should I get it?  It seems every program on the web site has similar names, and the links all lead back onto each other.  An exact link would be very helpful.
If I have to, I'll install with VirtualBox in Windows 7, even.
    Thanks,
    --Al--

I even made sure there were no services left running, in addition to uninstalling anything that even smelled of SQL in Control panel; captured another screenshot:

  • Is SQL Server Express / SSRS the right choice ? (Winforms / SQL Server Express)

I am currently using VB.net 2012 (WinForms) and SQL Express 2012 in developing a Cloud based dental application (at present
www.VisualDentist.com). At some point we will upgrade to a proper SQL Server license.
Is SSRS the right way to go?
    How do I obtain SSRS?
Can you point to a SSRS tutorial?
We already have a Telerik license, but are thinking of adopting SSRS.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi,
why not, but this depends on your requirements. You can take a look at the public documentation here:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb510782(v=sql.105).aspx
Dependent on your requirements it might be a good, but you should better now after reading the information mentioned above.

I can install VFPOLEDBSetup.msi on machine with Windows 7 - 64bit and MS SQL Server Express 2012, but I cannot install VFPOLEDB on machine with Windows 7 - 64bit and MS SQL Server Express 2014. Is there a problem with MSSQL 2014?

I don't think this is related to what Man-wai Chang points to, because the dropping of OLEDB just means continued development of data access drivers for SQL Server are ODBC only now, not that the OLEDB branch of any database is broken intentional.
That said, it's quite cumbersome to find out what your detail problem is. Do you expect installation of Win7, MSSQL2014 and VFPOLEDB to eventually reproduce and see your problem? You could bet on your luck someone else had the same combination, but there
are not a lot of VFP developers left over and they may already be using Win8 or 8.1
Is there any error in setup? Are you just looking at the wrong place (eg OLEDB providers are not lilsted in ODBCAdmin)? VFP OLEDB is and always will be a 32bit driver and can only be seen and used from 32bit processes.
    Bye, Olaf.
PS: You can use 32bit drivers from a 64bit MSSQL Server as it manages pools of 32bit and 64bit processes. For example see how to do via linked server http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll?Wiki~VisualFoxProDataFromSQLServer. The detail is in allowing inprocess
    usage of the driver.
    Also see this:
Create a new SQL Server Integration Services(SSIS) package.
Add a Data Flow Task(DFT) to the package.
Select the DFT, and go to Data Flow designer page.
Add a OLE DB Source to the package.
Double-click the OLE DB Source, click “New” > “New” to create a connection to Visual FoxPro.
In the Connection Manager, please select “Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro”
Type the file path of a Visual FoxPro database(e.g. C:Address.dbc).
Test the connection by clicking button “Test Connection”
Click “OK” > “OK” to apply.
Now, we can select a table from the Visual FoxPro database in the OLE DB Source editor.

  • SQL Server Express with SS Management Studio. Which version is lightest/smallest?

I’m looking to download the smallest/lightest version of SQL Server Express with SS Management Studio.
    Which option should I choose?
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062
Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

    Hello,
What's the main propuse you use SQL Server Express edition? If you just use SQL Server in development. You can try to use SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB.
LocalDB is a lightweight version of Express that has all its programmability features.SQL Server Express LocalDB runs in user mode, and you can install it more quickly with fewer prerequisites (a minimal set of files necessary to start the SQL Server Database
    Engine) and no configuration.

  • How to restore SQL Server 2008 database to SQL Server Express 2012

How to restore SQL Server 2008 database to SQL Server Express 2012.
I BACKED UP a SQL Server 2008 database from work, which runs the enterprise version of 2008, and I tried to RESTORE it to my new 64-Bit home PC which is running the new SQL Server Express 2012 64-Bit (Advanced Edition).
But if fails. I get the following message text.
Can anyone help me please. I thought restoring a 2008 database to the later version 2012 would be possible.
Here is the error message. Thanks.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
    Restore of database failed. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.RelationalEngineTasks)
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The database was backed up on a server running version 8.00.2039. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 11.00.3128. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a
backup that is compatible with this server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoExtended)

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The database was backed up on a server running version 8.00.2039. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 11.00.3128. Either restore the database on a server that supports the

Are you sure your database is SQL server 2008 from error message it seems your SQL server version is 2000.I guess you have multiple versions of SQL server.
AFAIK you cannot restore backup of SQL server 2000 to 2012 directly .Restore it first to SQL 2008/2008R2 or 2005 then take backup again of new database created and then you would be able to restore it on 2012.Its kind of intermediate way
Also make sure your DB size is less than 10 G as max DB size supported by Express edition is 10 G and if your DB size is more than 10 G restore will fail.
You are also trying to restore enterprise DB backup on express edition so you will loose enterprise features on express edition

  • Can't install sql server express

    HElp!!!
I'm trying to install any recent free sql server.. to practice with vs2012 and asp.net mvc.. and the install keeps failing.  THis is my personal desktop running 64bit Windows 7.  sql server express "said" it was installing but sql
server doesn't show up under Start/all programs and SWL server management studio isn't under administrative tools.  I tried sql server express but it said it wouldn't install on 64 bit -- something about WOW.  Several sql server things are listed
in control panel and I'm trying to uninstall them to start over.   Please point me to place to get sql server express with hopefully instructions to install.  Buying a 32 bit computer is not an option at this time.
    Thanks in advance,
    Kay

problems: 1. no menu item for "new table" in sql server management studio (Right click on tables)
    2. Can't attach northwind db and won't create it using script.  missing stored procedure 'sp_dboption'
    Hi,
Based on your description, firstly, we need to verify  if  there is no option of ‘New Table’ when right-clicking ‘Tables’ in the left panel of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), or you cannot create new table via the GUI in the right panel as follows.
They might be caused by incomplete installation, I recommend you to check if you have installed the SQL Server 2012 completely.
Secondly, are you trying to attach the NORTHWIND sample database with the sp_dboption in SSMS? If so, the sp_dboption has been deprecated in SQL Server 2012, it’s only supported in SQL Server 2008 or prior version, you can use
ALTER DATABASE NORTHWIND SET RECOVERY SIMPLE to replace the following lines in the
instnwnd.sql script, then execute it. I have done a test successfully in SQL Server 2012.
    exec sp_dboption 'Northwind','trunc. log on chkpt.','true'
    exec sp_dboption 'Northwind','select into/bulkcopy','true'
In addition, according to the message “visual studio 2013 does NOT recognize the server”, it seems that you encounter the connection issue between Visual Studio and SQL Server. If you get some error messages, you can post them for further analysis. Also, you
need to verify that the connection string (contains server name, login, password and so on) is correct when connecting to the SQL Server from Visual Studio.
    Thanks
    Lydia Zhang
