  • Problems with Menu Bar after recent security update

    Ever since installing yesterday's security update I have been having problems with the menu bar. When clicking on the blue Apple in the upper left hand corner, no drop-down menu appears as it should. This problem also occurs in the drop-down menu named for the program in various instances (Thunderbird, Azureus, iTunes, Finder, Firefox) but not in others (Safari, Adium, VLC). Sometimes the menus are simply truncated and do not include all the options they should rather than not opening at all.
    I have run Disk Utlity which found no problems and have performed a hard restart multiple times but the problem persists. Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you.

    Thanks for the help. I tried most of the solutions listed in the link you supplied, but am still having the same problem. However, when I tried to run the Tiger Cache Cleaner, I got the following error message:
    Runtime Error 4: Failed Assertion
    Location: /Volumes/RBUS/Common/MacOs/MacOSMenu.cpp:420

  • Having problems with menu bar! NEED HELP

    I'm having some serious problems with the finder menu bar. When I click on the blue apple, it won't show anything! It just highlights the blue apple without a pull down menu. Same goes for the Window pulldown menu. Also, under finder. when I click empty trash, or do the equivilent keyboard shortcut, it won't empty the trash. I have to ctrl click on the trashcan and empty it that way. Please help me fix my finder, or else I'm going to have to reformat and start ALL over which I really don't want to do. Thanks!
    PS This is on a Dual 1.42GHZ G4 Tower w/ Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card and 2GB (4X512mb) ram. I also updated to 10.4.7 from 10.4.6 to see if that fixed the problem, and no dice! Thanks!

    Well if the problem occurs in two accounts then it is systemic. When did the problem begin? Was it with a software update, sch as from 10.4.6 to .7? If so, try reapply the update using the Combo updater.
    IF that doesn't work you can re-install 10.4 using the Archive and Install method, which does not wipe your disk, does not require reinstalling all your applications etc, However, BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST, and read up on the A&I before you do it.
    Hope this helps

  • OS X Lion Server display problem with menu highlighting and button icons

    I have attached  Grab capture of my screen showing the problems with the window top bars and button icons. This happened after a routine security update.
    Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
    Thanks
    George Harrison

    I have/had the same problem. Comparible setup running Lion Server GM. The natd service fires off the InternetSharing service from the prefspane instead of the regular natd service. This is verifiable by entries in the system log as well as the lack of the natd process running. Below are my findings from research/experimentation; please understand that this is what I have done to get it working, it is DEFINITELY not best practices and I'm sure not supported by Apple. I'm just conveying what I think is happening and how I dealt with it.
    Natd - Executing the binary referenced in the launchctl job directly launches the InternetSharing service on Lion server. This does NOT act this way in SL server, where it works as expected. Replacing the Lion binaries with The SL ones results in natd working as expected: nat_start and nat_stop in /usr/libexec. In short, if you replace the Lion binaries with the ones from SL, it-s a drop-in fix. Natd isn't your only problem though...
    Dns/named - It appears that Apple has limited named to binding on the loopback adapter only by default on Lion. Adding a listen-on clause to named.conf with the appropriate bindings will fix this. I'm assuming you're running natd, named and dhcpd on the same box...
    Dhcpd - Works fine. It appears broken only because the InternetSharing service is replacing natd (why?!?) and it has a built-in dhcpd server (dumbed down 192.168.2.0 subnet). Once you fix natd, this runs as expected.
    Firewall/ipfw - Gotta have this running so that natd will do translation. Remember to open the dhcp ports to allow the clients to get leases...
    I hope this helps, I'm sticking with SL until these issues are worked out...

  • Problem with menu buttons

    Hi there,
    I have been using encore cs5 for a while now but have suddenly come across unusual activity when authoring DVD...
    I render mpg2 and bring it into Encore. I then make chapters on timeline and link to 5 buttons as required.
    When I preview it all looks fine and I have no problems. However, when I build project and burn, it plays first 3 buttons fine but for some reason the last two buttons do not link to correct chapter?
    I have checked links many times and as far as I can see they are all fine?  Any idea's please?
    Thanks

    Hi Jeff,
    Thanks for coming back to me.
    OK, I think I have solved the problem....
    I am using Dual Layer discs 2h-10mins and I notice that the auto (switch layer) in Encore was in use. As a last attempt I decided to use manual switch layer and it now burns and works fine !!
    I can only assume that Encore puts a hidden chapter mark at a point within the timeline and this therefore causes problems with my own chapters?
    Once I used manual switch layer mode it was fine.
    However, if I bring into Encore footgae that has not been transcoded then there is never a problem, apart from poorer quality ? The above problem only happened when I brought in Mpeg2 transcoded footage!!
    Up to now I have been importing HDV footage and letting Encore transcode it (auto mode) for me but I must admit it does not do a great job regarding quality and seems to use more space?
    If I first transcode in Premiere HDV to Mpeg2 then it looks much better and takes up less space !! I just have to remember from now on to manual set layer switch mode!
    Thanks
    Again

  • Problems with Menu Bar Vertical and Firefox

    The menu bar looks fine in IE.  When viewing in Firefox the submenus are not displaying correctly.  I can only see the edge of them. Please help!
    Thanks Mary
    www.cwa1118.com

    Mary,
    You have added overflow: hidden; to one of your menubar styles. That is why the submenus are, well, hidden!
    Go to this rule and get the hidden overflow out of the stylesheet:
    ul.MenuBarVertical li
         margin: 0;
         padding: 0;
         list-style-type: none;
         font-size: 100%;
         position: relative;
         text-align: left;
         cursor: pointer;
         width: 12em;
         background-color: #FFFFFF;
    /*               overflow: hidden;     delete this */
    /*     border-color: #000;
    */     outline-color: #333;
         outline-style: none;
         outline-width: thin;
         border-top-color: #000;
         border-right-color: #000;
         border-bottom-color: #000;
         border-left-color: #000;
         border-top-style: none;
         border-right-style: solid;
         border: 000000;
         border-bottom-style: solid;
         border-left-style: solid;
         border-top-width: thin;
         border-right-width: thin;
         border-bottom-width: thin;
    The reason this hides the submenus is because submenus are lists nested in the top menu items. By their nature, they overflow from the extent of the top menu. By hiding them, the only part that shows up is the small portion that lies within the extent of the top menu item.

  • Disk Utility Formatting problem with Menu

    Formatting keeps failing in DVDSP so I've been formatting it and then burning it in disk utility. But once it's burned, the remote and player won't return it back to the menu without reinserting the disk. Can someone help.

    Go here

    Click on the disk icon in the blue section the look in the purple section to the lower right. Your commands will be listed - what to they read?
    Go to the tracks and look at the commands and end jumps - anything listed?

  • Problems with PE10/11 Menus? Read this!!

    Had so many problems with Menu backgrounds when burning blu-ray / AVCHD discs.
    (1) Image doesn't fit screen - bars on both sides.
    Had this response:
    Hi Martin,
    This is regarding case no.- 183706274 where you were facing issues with the menu templates. It looks like a bug and same has been reported to the Engineering team. They will try to fix it and most probably it will be fixed in the next coming version as whole complete code has to be recreated to get it fixed. So it will take some time. Very sorry for the inconvenience.
    Best regards,
    DVA team
    (2) Poor quality Scenes Menu and misalignment of button highlights
    Experienced seemingly random behaviour - sometimes image/alignment ok, other times terrible. Spent hours trying to isolate problem...and today, cracked it. The problem is with MOTION MENU buttons.
    If you want decent quality Scenes Menu, DON'T HAVE MOTION MENU buttons. STILL FRAMES cause NO PROBLEMS. Sorted.
    There is clearly a conflict between video and menu images. Cannot believe these things weren't picked up on during testing?!? Have reported my findings to Adobe; let's see if they act upon them.

    Yeah, the second phase scan skip was a fluke find. Was doing some testing the other day and decided not to go to the end of the training session. I hit back, and was surprised to see the newly registered finger entry...
    The picture that's shown with "adjust your grip" depicts the edge of the fingertip, and every time I tried that the first 2 weeks after launch, it failed 100% in no time at all.  I guess it just does not like some fingers
    The bigest thing I've found the works for me is nailing down a small enough area following the 3 rows, 3 columns I outlined.  It's what's given me the best results to date.
    Thanks, and to all here as well. Happy Thanksgiving!  Maybe we can turn this turkey around

  • Spry menu problems with Internet explorer

    Hi everyone
    I'm having ongoing problems with my horizontal menus and
    internet explorer. They work fine in other browsers and with the
    generous help of others at these forums I've managed to sort out
    most of the problems. But I've hit a real wall with this one. The
    menus drop down showing the links OK but you cannot highlight or
    click on the options that drop down, they just appear as text. Any
    help would be appretiated. My appologies for posting in other
    threads also but just hoping for a response.
    I am very new to this side of design so simple answers would
    be very helpful. Thanks
    Bob

    I have 2 similar problems to the prior posts:
    1) I run IE7 and FF and the positioning of my submenus are
    skewed in IE only.
    2) I am not sure, but I believe I have a problem with my
    iframe appearing in my IE7 browser behind all of my submenus. Well,
    I know I have a problem with something, but whether or not it's the
    iframe I don't know. What I do know is that the box shows up like a
    border around my submenus and I can't get rid of it. I suspect that
    it may be caused by the fact that my menu buttons are imported
    gif's in the shape of rounded rectangles which allows for the
    corners to be visible. I actually just thought about it and my
    gif's are set to have a white index transparency, but maybe If I
    export the gifs without transparency, then that issue will be
    resolved. Well I will try that part and see, but any and all
    suggestions are welcome. Oh and I just remembered, that problem
    with the border around my submenus also has another problem with
    the word "false" inside of that border behind my submenus. This
    problem again is only in my IE browser, and it is hard to see it,
    but I have no idea why that is there or what it's from. I ran a
    search in my SpryMenuHorizontal.css page and in my html page for
    the word 'false' but nothing turned up. The only document related
    to this issue that contains the word 'false' is the
    'SpryMenuBar.js' document.

  • Problem with Finder and Menu Fonts (uppercase A)

    Hello --
    I'm having a problem with fonts. All the characters that appear under icons in the Finder or in the menu for any application appear as uppercase As with boxes around them. There appears to be one uppercase A for each character that should be there. If I click-pause-click to edit the filename in the Finder, the text appears normal during the duration of the change, and then reverts to uppercase A with a box around it again. All other operation of the computer is normal.
    I was watching and downloading video files in iTunes when the problem appeared. When I pressed ESC to exit full-screen mode, the Finder said that my start-up disk was almost full, and I saw the font problem. Upon investigating, I discovered that my start-up disk was completely full (and the download had failed), so the first thing I did was move some video files to an external drive, which freed about 5 GB.
    Since freeing the space, I've tried the following to fix it, in this order:
    1. booted from Tiger CD to run Repair Disk from Disk Utility
    2. rebooted from the boot hard drive to run Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility
    3. run through Disk Warrior
    4. created a test admin user and logged in as that user
    5. removed font cache files using terminal
    6. booted in safe mode, logged in as myself, and then rebooted normally
    None of these actions has had any effect. The computer is still operating normally, except for the characters that don't display correctly.
    I'm running 10.4.6 on a Titanium Powerbook 500 MHz with 512MB RAM. A few months ago, I replaced the internal hard drive with an 80GB Seagate.

    Hi again, zoobieboots —
    I appreciate your initiating a new thread. Your post here helps to make the situation much clearer than in bmewolf's thread — particularly in terms of what you've already tried. Thanks again.
    A few initial thoughts —
        (a) As I was trying to suggest previously, you're apparently operating (after moving some files to an external drive) with ~6-10% (?) free disk space. Particularly given that you were working with large video files when this appeared, File fragmentation would be expected. While I haven't heard of this particular symptom resulting from fragmentation, that would be a concern to me — particularly since this immediately preceded the problematic behavior.
    I've read some good reports about iDefrag, but haven't used it myself. A demo version is apparently available for HDs < 100GB. But you'd presumably need to free significantly more space first (you haven't actually said whether 5GB or ?? is the total available now). Having never experienced severe fragmentation, I don't fully understand its consequences — but another participant may be able to explain this.
        <b>(b) You don't mention trying to troubleshoot potentially corrupt or incompatible fonts (or font caches), also as outlined in the other thread. As I suggested there, The X Lab's "undoing Font Book" FAQ is a useful resource in this.
        (c) Although I agree it may be an unsatisfying "solution," an Archive & Install did work for bmewolf in the case that you've indicated matches yours closely.
    I hope one of these suggestions is helpful. Please post back to discuss your progress.
    Regards,
    Dean

  • Problem with jquery slide show conflict with vertical navigation menu in Firefox & Chrome

    Problem with jquery slide show conflict with vertical navigation menu in Firefox & Chrome. Works in IE. This is my first time trying to post a question - so please be kind. I am also not good with code and am finding css a real challenge after learning to design based on tables. I'm using CS5.
    The "test" page with the slide show is: http://www.reardanwa.com/index-slides.html   The same page without the slide show is http://www.reardanwa.com/
    I realize the images are not ideally sized - I'll fix those once I get the pages to function.  Maybe I need a different slide show? I would prefer a widget that I can modify to required size & postition. Again - I'm not good at building with code from scratch.
    The problem is the naviagation links that are directly next to the slide show do not work in Firefox of Chrome. They do work in IE.
    I've read about using jQuery.noConflict(); code but can't figure out the correct way to use it in my case or whether that's even part of the solution. I know my code is not well organized as I have cobbled together from various sources in an attempt to format the page the way the client wants it. Also, FYI, I will eventually try to make the page work in Surreal CMS.
    I've spent sevaral days over the last several weeks trying to solve sth slide show/navigation conflict - so any specific light you can shed will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
