Problems centralizing windows on dual monitor

Hi all,
every time I create a JFrame on my aplication, I use the method setLocationRelativeTo trying to centralize it.
I used to pass null to this method every time I call it, but recently I got a dual monitor and discovered that passing null to it makes the new frame open half in the left monitor and half in the right monitor.
Most of the times, it opens centralized in the primary display, but sometimes things get messy.
Does anybody knows how can I make frames open on the same display the application is showing?

Take at look at this class (and the example that is given)

  • Mac and Windows with dual monitors Question

I use a Intel MacPro running Tiger with latest updates in my church. We use the Mac and Keynote 2.0.2 to present PowerPoint slides on the big screen (dual outputs). Everything was going well until the pastors upgraded to new computers running Vista and Office 2007. Now neither pastor's files will load into Keynote. It comes up with an error. The pastors have saved their files from PP as 2003 PPT files, and they still will not open. Error - unable to open file type. The one pastor went back to XP (dumped Vista) but still used the Office 2007 program and saved as PP2003, but the error still appears.
FYI - I noticed that Office 2007 saves with a file with the extension of .pptx instead of the .ppt. Checking the file they gave me shows that it is indead a .ppt file and not .pptx file. It makes no difference.
I believe it is an Office 2007 problem I'm dealing with. I have taken the .ppt file and loaded it onto the PC running PP 2003 and it loads fine, except for some format problems. I then resave it with a different name and tried to load that file (hoping it was converted) , with the same error showing. The problem is transfered with the file. Other files created with the PP 2003 program load fine into Keynote, so it has to be the Office2007 doing something.
So the questions are, is there an easy fix and still use the Keynote program, OR does Keynote 3 take care of this problem in the upgrade, OR should I install Win XP home or Pro and use parallels (which I have)? Would WinXP Home be enough to support the dual outputs and be fast enough? I am familiar with XP Pro not Home.
Any information you may have, could be a help. I need this resolved soon. I hate having to bring in the old Windows PC, after enjoying the quality of the Mac.

I have no issues streaming video on demand from all of the media sources which you have listed. My Mac mini is the Early '09, so my hardware is not as powerful as the newest Mac mini.

Thanks David - glad to here the Mini supports dual monitors, and you're not having any streaming issues. Did you have any special settings, like "no hardware acceleration"? Are you streaming HD content?
If it supports dual monitors, then I would think the iPad could be used as a second display and input device - the demos I've seen with Air Display (from Avatron Software") would accomplish what I'm looking for. Here is a demo at http://www.vimeo.com/16950420 showing the iPad working with a Windows machine, but I've seen them working with Macs as well.
    Thanks again

  • Problems adding and removing dual monitor

using FCE to do some light editing at work. continually need to flip between a single and dual monitor setup due to other things i need to do on a different computer. having problem with FCE not moving all windows back to the main monitor after removal of additional monitor. 'display' settings will not let me setup as being unattached since (and this is what the error says) that the other monitor is no longer attached. only happens w/ FCE. other programs seem to recognize that the monitor is no longer there, and moves all the windows back to the main monitor. what am I missing?

Have you tried closing the dual display option in *View>Video Out* before shutting down FCE?

Your system doesn't meet the requirements and that is that. AE has required 900 pixel height ever since CS4. Other than changing your screen res or shuffling around windows there is nothing you can do.

  • Indesign CS3 Crashes Randomly on Windows x64, Dual Monitor Setup

My coworker and I just had our computers upgraded Windows XP 64-bt on the following computer setup:
    Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz CPU
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    Gigabyte GA-EX58 Intel X58 Motherboard
    1TB Seagate ES.2 7200rpm 32MB Cache SATAII Hard  Drive
We're running CS3. Indesign keeps crashing on her machine, randomly from what we can tell. It runs fine on my machine.
We are running Indesign in compatibility mode for Windows XP on both machings (the crashing was much worse before we turned it on).
The only difference between my computer and the workstation where Indesign CS3 crashes is she has a dual monitor setup.
Any thoughts on what might be causing it?

Thanks for the heads up.We're actually kinda banking on Windows 7 to be a bit more stable and switch to that, but it's a long few months when your program crashes every few minutes.
I just realized that we don't have the latest update (5.0.4) on her machine, we've downloaded it and are hoping that will help to at least reduce the crashing...

  • FCPX,  problems in window/record audio/monitor/choose 'airplay'.

I had to record a voice over (audio by dropmenu windows/record) there are options for mic and monitor. By monitor one is 'airplay'.
I wanted to find out the purpose of this. You need a password. I tried several times (my standaard and only password for fcpX, iTunes, apple TV etc.) but that will not be accepted as the message say.
I wanted to quit at least but I had to try again several times to quit because the demand for a password comes back and the options in "record" to switch there does not appear.
I had to try several times before the options suddenly came back (the message disapeared too) to end this exercise.
    Three questions:
    1. what does the function airplay mean?
    2. what to do with the password-problem?
    3. could this all be a bug?
    Thanks!
    bruce

Airplay is the functionality that lets your mac or ios device play audio (and/or video) to an AppleTV, like it were another audio device. If you have an AppleTV, or Airport Express, you can select that as an audio output device, much like you can select your headphones or other audio output.
This is not a good option for monitoring audio in an application such as FCP X, as there will inevitably be a lag due to buffering, at least.

  • Seamless Windows and Dual Monitor Display

Seamless windows open spanning both display monitors regardless of the settings I use to prevent it. It's like the SGD thinks both monitors are one big display and doesn't open things in just the default monitor. An application that opens maximized will cover both monitors!
Has anyone else had this problem and found a workaround? We are using Windows XP client (Dell laptop), IE6, 2 display monitors (NVidia graphics card), and the application server is Windows 2003, SGD is 4.2.

It is an individual application we are publishing in the seamless window, but that one application launches many applications from there -- it is basically a toolbar for launching a whole host of other applications.

  • Dell Inspiron 7000 Windows 8 Dual Monitor Setup

    Dell Inspiron 7000 Windows 8
    DVI and HDMI video outputs.
I want to connect two monitors. The Best Buy rep says use and DVI to VGA cable with splitter. However, I spoke to tech support reps here at work who set up and support computers and they said that may not work and if it does the displays may not extended but be mirrors of each other.. At work I use a higher end dell with the traditional docking station. The Dell Inspiron does not have that option. Using a cable is easier that purchasing what amounts to a usb hub that is called a USB 3.0 dual video docking station.

    Hi,
I have the same issue here... I tried the adapter either for VGA or HDMI, but it still didn't work....Could you please let me know how to fix it? I used Dell before and everything was fine but only for this series... really waste me a lot of time to find an answer to fix it but didn't work....sigh..Thanks

  • ThinkPad W530 on Windows 8 - dual monitoring flickers and resets resolution evey minute

I am not able to run presentations from my ThinkPad W530 while duplicating the monitor to a beamer. The monitor will flicker and reset its resolution every minute. I have already tried updating drivers, setting BIOS mode to discrete, using different resolutions, but nothing helped. As such, the device is useless when I would need it most importantly, to give presentations.
Thanks in advance for any help in resolving this really disturbing issue.

Are you attaching it via VGA or DisplayPort?

  • GTX 580 Twin Frozr II/OC dual monitor/second DVI problem

    Hello,
I am experiencing a problem with my new dual monitor setup.
A few days after I installed the new monitor (DELL U2312HM), the DVI with the old monitor (LG M208WA) stopped from working.
The old monitor went in power saving mode, and I couldn't wake it up.
After a few days working with only 1 monitor, without taking any further actions such as drivers re-installation etc, the pc boots and the monitor wakes up again!
Today, stopped from working again, after 1 month of normal dual monitor operation.
The monitors are connected to the following DVI Ports (starting to count from left to right, as we face the ports with the PCI-E interface being in the left):
DELL @ DVI#1 (set as primary)
       LG @ DVI#2
    So, I tried the following:
    1. Switched the monitors to the other DVI (DELL @ DVI#2, LG @ DVI#1).
Result: LG monitor works fine, DELL monitor went power saving.
(Meaning that the monitor in DVI#2 is still in power saving mode)
    2. Re-installed (in clean mode) the nVidia drivers
       Result: no change
    3. Switched the DVI cables
       Result: no change
    4. Searched the forum for similar case:
Result: I couldn't find something similar to my problem...
Is there a test/diagnostic that I can run on the DVI ports to see if there is a hardware issue with my VGA card (if this is the problem)?
Is there something else I should try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dimitris

    Is your problem completely gone?
I have the lightning version, same thing happened to me. I will try the last thing that fixed your problem - but if it does not solve or problems start again, I guess the best option is to get a replacement RMA.
This is the second time the 2nd DVI stopped and then started again (with the method mentioned).
After the last time it started working, everything is fine.
While having the problem, I tried to plug in only 1 monitor in that DVI and boot the pc, the boot screen appeared fine, but when entering windows it went power saving.
So i guess it is not an issue of RMA.
I guess Windows or the nVidia drivers under some unknown (to me) circumstances are causing this.
Please post here if my solution worked for you too.

  • Maximising Safari on a dual-monitor setup (GUI behaviour in Window XP Pro)

When I maximise Safari on the 2nd monitor of my two-monitor setup, it disappears off-screen (but its icon still remains in the XP taskbar) and I am unable to bring it back into the viewable area. Consequently, I have to close Safari and reopen it to continue.
When I maximise Safari on the 1st monitor it fills the screen as I'd expect.
    Windows XP Pro

Confirmed on another Dell D610/Windows XP dual-monitor setup.
However, when I maximise safari on the secondary monitor it still appears on the task bar, enabling me to right-click and Restore the window (whereupon it reappears).

  • Unwanted keyboard shortcut with dual monitors

    Problem:
I have a computer setup with dual monitors (desktop extended). When I have a window open, e.g., Microsoft Word 2007, after I type "1" on the keyboard, the Word Window and mouse relocate to the second monitor. When I type "2" the Word window and mouse relocate
to the main monitor. In the word document, 1 and 2 are typed in the document, but pushing the keys still move the window and mouse to the opposing monitor.
I checked the keyboard settings within Windows and found that sticky keys and such are not enabled. The keyboard has no such features to enable. I also checked the display setup in display properties and found nothing that would indicate such a setup. Google
searches return nothing related to my problem.
    What I do know:
-The rest of the numbers on the keyboard work fine. Pressing 1 and 2 on the number pad at the far right of the keyboard do not transfer the active window to the second monitor. Those keys work fine.
-The type of window does not matter. Using notepad, word, excel, internet explorer, sticky notes; all of those windows would transfer to the opposing monitor when I push 1 and 2.
    Setup:
    Windows XP
    Dual-Monitor
    Wireless Keyboard and mouse

This pertains to StarTech DVI to USB adapters.
There's an icon in your system tray near the clock, either super utility or usb display device. Right click, and select multi display control panel.

There's a button to disable as long as you have the newer driver from their website. The old drivers had a bug that caused this button to not work

  • Flash CS3 Crashes with Dual Monitors

Flash CS3 crashes when I have the actions panel open on my
secondary monitor and I close Flash. I have to actual move the
action script panel to the primary monitor or close it completely.
The same thing happens if I try to save my project space with the
    actions panel open.
The other issue I have found is that when I open Flash up
again, despite the fact that I have saved my work space profile,
the pallets all appear on my primary monitor and not the secondary
one. Didn't re amend this issue back in Flash 5 or 6?

OK the problem isn't the DUAL Monitors, but rather having a
custom workspace open while trying to close Flash. I have to change
the workspace back to Default or it will not close at all. Any
    ideas.

  • Dual Monitors Windows 7 Problems

Ok, this problem is getting really annoying and I think its a problem with windows 7 itself and not my computer.
Basically I have a dual monitor setup with the left hand monitor as my secondary and right hand monitor as my primary.  Whenever I have an application with any graphics on it at all such as a progress bar on my left hand monitor moving windows around becomes laggy and juddery, yet this doesn't happen when the graphical app is on my primary monitor!

    Updating to latest drivers
Upgraded system memory from 2GB to 4GB
    Installing 64-bit version
removing sound card and re-installing windows from scratch
    upgraded my PSU
    Thanks for your help!

(Latest update) This is the best I can do to alleviate the problem, and does reduce its severity immensely, but I found myself still noticing some slight playback glitches in videos on my second monitor which probably also translate to anything else with movement. I have tested with a panning scene in one of my videos and there is a subtle micro-stutter on my second monitor which I can find no way to fix. This doesn't occur if outputting to a single display, one or the other, nor does it occur when playing the video on my primary monitor in a dual-monitor configuration. Note that when I say "primary monitor", I am not referring to the monitor Windows has marked as primary, but my actual monitor rather than TV. In a dual-monitor configuration, this micro-stutter will only occur when playing video on my right monitor (TV), regardless of settings or which ports the monitors are connected to on the GPU. The micro-stutter occurs with no relation to the activity on the other screen, as it can be completely still. I can confirm the micro-stutter does not occur at all with Desktop Window Manager (Aero) disabled. In short, this is a nightmare.
(Note that this micro-stutter is equally replicable in the 182.50 (WDDM1.1-less) driver, meaning there is no way to solve it other than disabling Aero or outputting to a single monitor.)
I think I've solved the problem.. for me, anyway. I've divided this into short answer and "long answer", which is closer to a stream of consciousness in some ways, as I found out about Force10Level9 as I was writing.
    The short version:
I've found some registry keys which seem to have fixed the problem for me. I haven't experienced any side effects, but use the tweaks at your own risk!
I don't know exactly what they do. This comes from a lot of.. experimentation. I believe FrameRateMin tells the Desktop Window Manager that it's crucial to try to keep the framerate at or above the value specified (more details below), and Force10Level9 sounds like it forces DWM to use DirectX 9. I'm fairly certain about the former, not as certain about the latter, but together they do wonders.
You can view the fix below. You can then save it as a .reg file and import it into your registry. Restart the Desktop Window Manager service or reboot to see the changes.
    Fix: http://pastebin.com/FFDbubw9
    Undo: http://pastebin.com/zA8CJY06
(P.S. Just ran a FurMark test between fix applied and no fix. No difference in performance, with an inactive secondary monitor. I also noticed no difference in Physical Memory usage as reported by Task Manager. YMMV, let me know if you have any side effects.)
(P.P.S. The screen fade that happens when you log in/out is just as choppy as before (or if it wasn't choppy for you, that shouldn't have changed). Oh well, how often do we see that thing, anyway? :))
By the way, it appears 10Level9 is Windows 7's emulation platform for running DX10 on DX9 hardware. It's reported to be at least a 0.5x performance hit, so it's surprising that it actually makes Aero run better. If this article is anything to go by, Force10Level9 makes Aero run exactly the same as it does with older WDDM 1.0-only drivers like 182.50: http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=637&pgno=1
    The long version:
Well... I was able to do one more thing.
There is an undocumented registry key which allows you to fine-tune the Desktop Window Manager's scheduling. Unfortunately, all of its values seem to be defunct in the final version of Windows 7 we all use today... except one: FrameRateMin.
From what I gather, the Desktop Window Manager (Aero) carefully monitors the framerate it is able to achieve, and when it can't measure up to its own expectations, it will perform a "step down", or framerate reduction, and maintain this lower framerate for a given period of time (at one time specifiable with a registry value) before trying again at maximum speed.
I presume it does all this to keep things looking "smooth".
The problem is, in most cases, it doesn't help, and actually prolongs the stuttering duration. By "in most cases", I mean in every case it's happened in my personal usage of my Windows 7 computers.
So what helped me was setting this FrameRateMin value to 60. That way, the Desktop Window Manager considers anything under 60fps to be unacceptable and will not remain at a lower framerate for purposes of perceived smoothness. Thus, the stuttering will take up as little time as possible, making it nearly unnoticeable most of the time.
Keep in mind DWM shouldn't be having performance problems to begin with, but apparently in some cases, like with my particular hardware (desktop and laptop) and the latest NVIDIA drivers, it does.
Down to brass tacks. The registry key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Schedule. The value is FrameRateMin, a DWORD representing the minimum framerate DWM will consider as acceptable. I set it to 60, but you can set it to whatever you want.
To repeat, this WILL NOT prevent Aero from ever getting below the framerate you specify; it simply prevents Aero from retaining a lower framerate after a stutter in order to give the illusion of smoothness (an illusion which fails).
I imagine the main reason it fails so spectacularly in my usage is because I watch a lot of videos which play back at 24fps. Such a framerate plays back terribly with a 30Hz refresh rate, which is what Aero would reduce itself to for extended lengths of time. Now, performance hiccups are minimal, but sadly still existent.
So this isn't a solution, but it does help. I am still uncertain of where the problem lies, considering GPU-Z shows graphics card loads to be as low as always when it's happening.
Oh, and I found one more registry value. This one is far more important. :) It solves the problem for me entirely, from what I can tell.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics
add the DWORD value Force10Level9 with a value of 1.
I haven't noticed any side effects, just smooth performance.
Apply these tweaks at your own risk!
