I have read lots of posts regarding problems copying onto CD disks,
Having wasted lots of disks doing the same, reading thru the problems and solutions, the answers were coming back, clean your disk drive, send it back to apple its faulty , there had been pages and pages, from guys who knew what they was talking about, not from people like me ,
So my point is trying to copy photos to a CD-R 700MB with no luck, and I copy load of these, So what's changed, Ive used sony and had problems, I've just got a new batch of Tesco CD-R and wasted about 8 of them,
I just had a couple of old ones left TDK, the ones you can print using an Ink jet on Purchased 100 on a reel, worked first time,
Now I've had the same problem before, but it seems to come back to the, disk make. your using not the faulty Unit all YOU TECHNO guys tell us

When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it -
Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

TeryYou have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive? I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it. If it can, you should repair it as well. You may need to erase it and start a new backup. That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

Problems copying large files to external disks
I have a lot of media and so multiple USB and network based external hard disks.
I'm having trouble with two in particular that are recent buys. I initially mounted them via a USB hub onto my Time Capsule, but when I had errors, I've now tried mounting them directly to my MacBook Air - and for comparison directly to a Windows laptop.
And I'm only having problems when it's a Mac doing the copying (MBA to either USB mounted via Time Capsule or directly USB mounted on the MBA).
The problem is that the drive appears to behave OK for initial copies - but I'm trying to put a set of old movies (captured from a VCR ages ago that I'd recorded off TV) onto one of the drives and (a) it takes ages to copy and (b) eventually I get a write failure. The specific error message is
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "" can't be written. (Error code -36)
I"ve tried a whole variety of setups - as I've said via Time Capsule and directly mounted. I also wondered if the file system on the drive would make a difference. Out of the box it was formatted with FAT32 and when that failed I've now reformatted with MacOS file system - which I would have thought would give better compatibility (and I've read that FAT32 has a large file size limit - although I think it's 4GB and while I do have one file at 4.04GB, it's not failing the copy on that file).
I've also connected the drive (when formatted FAT32) to a Windows laptop and (a) it copies faster and (b) it copies successfully.
Any suggestions for this? Is there some kind of large file (all are >1GB) copy issue with USB mounted devices in OSX?As I mentioned in my original post while the disks were originally formatted FAT32 I reformatted then and changed them to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so that isn't the issue. I still have the problem with the disks using Apple format.
I've noticed that if I do the copy in pieces, it seems to work. I.e. if I select the full set of 45GB in one copy and paste operation (dragging and dropping using Finder) it fails part way through.
But if I copy 3/4 movies at a time going back until I have copied all of them then I can get all of them on the disk.
It suggests to me it's some kind of issue with copying and pasting a very large amount of data in Snow Leopard? -

If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk. I have had no problems backing up my MacBook Pro 2011 to my Western Digital My Book Live through a Linksys EA4500 router until recently. I've made no major changes. I've ran a diagnosis on my back up drive with no problems. The Time Machine back up starts, but about after about 5 to 10 minutes I get the error message. I can see the shared drive in Finder. The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up. I can see the shared folders on the networked drive. The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops. Can anyone help?
You can't repair a network volume in Disk Utility.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.) -
I have a MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB, 500GB HDD, running 10.8.2 My computer as been running slow and fearing my HDD might die. I bought a brand new 1TB G-Drive from Apple yesterday and started my back up. It gets to just over 22GB backed up then I get this error message:

"Attempting to copy to disk" error when syncing
I am having an issue with syncing my iPhone today. For some reason when I am syncing, when it gets to the point of the check "Finding Purchased Items", I get an error message stating "Attempting to copy to disk LAPTOP HARD DRIVE failed. You do not have enough access priviledges for this operation".
I checked the .xml files in iTunes and I do have all priviledges across the board, yet it is still coming up with the message.
It seems though that the sync is completing despite the error, it's just a bloody annoyance.
Any help would be appreciated.

CS4 problems copying and pasting masked items
The problem: Copying and pasting a placed image combined with other Illustrator art with multiple gausian blurs that have been masked/grouped. Placed image type does not matter. PDF, JPG, TIFF, etc placed in Illustrator CS4 (or 3). Some images are complex and others are not.
What happens: After copying and pasting, the masked (grouped) image breaks apart into separate components that are no longer masked/grouped. Happens with different files with different images on different computers. WIth or without text in document. Sometimes image pastes correctly but most times it does not.
Hardware/OS: 3 separate iMacs (20" and two 23") all with intel chips but different processing speeds. All running latest and most updated version of Leopard. All with 4 MB Ram and more than a 100 GB of free hard drive space.
Software: Illustrator CS4 (latest update) and CS3 on one of the 23" iMacs.
Solutions tried so far: Ran Onyx, repaired permissions, scripts, cleaned caches, zapped PRAM and on one iMac, ran Disk Warrior. Tried in Safe boot mode and tired with a new user account. Created new files with new images and tried old files. Tried opening files from the server and from the desktop. Threw out illustrator prefs and emptied trash.
Thought it may have to do with font conflicts but some files don't have fonts. Turned off font management programs (Suitcase on one iMac, Font Explorer Pro on others, all updated to latest version) and restarted so only system fonts loaded. No luck. Turned on fonts used in various documents, still no luck.
Thought it may have to do with memory issues after copying masked items. Sometimes the copied image would paste correctly and then the next time I pasted it, it would not. Before pasting a second time I would copy a small item (to clear the memory) and then paste it and then recopy the masked item and paste that. Still no luck.
Checked activity monitor but nothing looks to be a memory hog or out of place. Happens on all three iMacs and while the OS and Illustrator are common to all three, Fonts and font management tools are not. No weird plug-ins or third party extensions installed. Plus it happened in safe boot mode so all extraneous fonts and such should have been deactivated.
Curiously, if I drag copy the masked item using the option key, the masked item copies fine. I know this can be used as a work-around but I would like to resolve this as sometimes the designers need/want to use command-c/command-v.
Not sure what else to try. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you.This might work, this might not. I have copy paste problems
on a regular basis and all that works for me is closing Captivate
down and then re open and continue. At worst, a reboot tends to
solve this glitch in my experience.

Problem copying some files. Error messages -36 and -50
I'm trying to backup my user folder onto an external LA Cie drive, and some of the files refuse to copy. The files, it seems, are mostly image or mov. files, and there appear to be dozens of "bad" ones, maybe hundreds. Several tens of thousand have no problem copying, but the bad files foul up the entire process.
The error messages I tend to get are as follows:
--"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [file name] could not be read or written (error code -36)"
--"The operation cannot be completed because the item [file name] is locked."
--I also get error code -50 sometimes.
Can anyone diagnose this problem and tell me how to fix it?

First thing I think I'd try would be to see if a different cable helps. Sometimes a bad cable can cause problems with an external disk. Also, make sure nothing but the drive is connected to the PowerBook.
Second, look at the LaCie web site and see if there's a firmware update for your drive. I found a post on another board where the person had the -50 problem with a LaCie DVD drive that was cured by a firmware update.
The -36 error means there's a disk I/O error:
<pre class="command">ioErr = -36, /*I/O error (bummers)*/</pre>Look in your console log at the time you try to copy one of these files. It might have a line something like this:
<pre class="command">Apr 07 09:00:00 username kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error.</pre>The username and disk0s3 parts will change a bit. You can figure out which disk is which using the Terminal application. Just copy and run this command:
<pre class="command">diskutil list</pre>That'll give you the names and BSD identifiers (which is the diskNsN name) for your drive's partition. That should tell you where the actual error is occuring.
As for the -50 error, that's an error in the parameter list. That can be caused by copying Mac files to FAT32 formatted partitions. If your LaCie drive is not formatted as Mac OS Extended, you might come up against this problem, too.

dual 800 G4 Mac OS X (10.4.3)I had the same problem. And to think I actually HESITATED at installing the update. Oh wait... this happened AFTER the update. Funny how often that happens, eh? But I digress...
Anyway, I had two errors- initially the iPod stated my music library was somewhere else, and did I want to sync to that library. When I said yes, it reverted then to the "attempting to copy to disk"error. Further, iTunes showed that my iPod on the iTunes was EMPTY. However, my actual iPod hadn't lost any data. Confused yet? So am I.
*Last ditch effort- I went back in, and updated all my permissions, did a permission repair and then a permission verify.
* Also did a disk verify on the iPod to make sure it wasn't sick.
*I also drug a new song into my library.
*Changed from the USB plugin to the firewire. (Although I did this earlier in the day, and hadn't seen a noticeble change)
* Opened the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. (should have done that a few hours ago)
When my first pop up asked about did I want to sync to the mystery persons library, I said yes. (At the worst, I have all my music and could reimport all 30G of it, if necessary.) And immediately, the sync began, and began appropriately. However, it IS re-syncing every single song I had on the iPod to begin with.
I suspect something nasty happened in the iTunes update, ever since the intel thing happened, the updates have been a bit sketchy. I really like Apple products, but I've gone through 3 iPods due to software meltdowns, and it's a bit frustrating.

I'm working with a Mac, with 10.10.2 system. My Audition program has been working fine for years now. But, there is a problem I can't solve. All my markers on a given piece of audio allows me to left click to highlight the time signature until my audio reaches the one hour point. From there on, the left click will not give me the drop down menu in order to copy and then paste into an Excel sheet I then have to submit for the proofing purposes. After the one hour mark, I can only control/c in order to highlight, then when I slide up to my Excel sheet, I'm able to right click and paste. Why is the program not, all of a su allowing me to left cllick the mouse and have a drop down menu give me the option to "copy, " as it does for any time signature markers up to 1:00:00.000?
Which version of Audition? With the latest version of Audition running on a Windows 7 machine I can't get a dropdown menu at all when I left click on the time in Markers List. The only way to do it is with cntrl-c.

Work around "cannot copy to disk.....cannot be read from or written to.
While copying large files(movies or large amounts of music)to the iPod touch the error message" disk cannot be read from or written to" appears. Here is a work around for the failure.
1. Run the latest version of iTunes and connect the iPod. Perform the following after the failure (allow one failure to occur and repeat this after each occurence) This is only good for one movie or one large grouping of music files. Eject the iPod and allow 30 seconds after the plug is pulled before reattaching the plug to the iPod. Once the summary window appears you are ready to start.
2. In the movie tab behind the summary remove SYNC Movies check from the box.
In the Music tab remove the SYNC Music check from the box.
3. On the summary tab uncheck "manually manage music" in the options section. It will ask if you are sure, choose OK. Click "Apply" in the bottom right corner. Allow the iPod to try to SYNC... a message will appear explaining that there is not enough disk space, choose "OK".
4. Check "manually manage music" in the options section. Click "Apply" in the bottom right corner.
5. Drag and drop the selection of music or the movie over to the iPod icon on the left side of the screen under "Devices". The transfer should start and the progress graphic will start in the upper status window.
***I have only been able to move/ copy one movie at a time and one large music selection. When attempting the second transfer the error message returns and you have to start the process over. I tryed restoring, updating iTunes, different cables, updating XP, different USB ports, countless system restarts and threatening to smash it if it didn't work. I spoke with APPLE Tech support and they are aware of the problem and should be attempting to correct it. My iPod is @ its default settings. I have had no problems with single music files transfering but I have had it fail on as little as three in a group. Good Luck and I hope this helps.Here is some more info on this issue. I've been having the same problem - I've tried disconnecting all other USB devices, making sure to plug into the back-side USB 2.0 port, I even went and bought a PCI card 2-port USB hub and tried that, but could never sync movies or multiple songs (usually less than 50 songs). Today, I was able to transfer 2 movies and a TV show and about 100 songs and the one thing that was different was that I was doing a video conversion in the background with FFMPEG (taking up about 90% CPU), so iTunes only had about 10% CPU while doing the sync.
Unfortunately, as I started typing this message, a third movie transfer just failed with the "cannot copy to disk..." read/write error. Oh well, just thought I'd get the info out, as this is an exteremely frustrating issue, and hopefully the more info we have we'll eventually be able to figure it out. -

Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Restore your iPhone to reinstall iOS. Be sure to do this while connected to your computer and iTunes.

Copy to disk utility not working right
My disk utility not work like it used to, it does not show up a disk when I put it in the drive. And I can't copy to disk anymore. A blank disk shows up as a removeable drive instead of a blank disk on the disk utility...??? I need to fix this so I can back-up my files and free up some space, help please?

The last time I saw a similar problem to yours, he was also running Panther. I advised reinstalling the 10.3.9 combo update, and his woes were gone.

Another thought is to check System Preferences/CD's & DVD'S, and check your selection nuder "When you insert a blank CD" (or DVD).
Running Disk Utility from the install disk, and repairing permissions is also another possible fix.
