Problems getting public wifi

Since upgrading to Lion on  my MacBook Pro I now have problems logging onto Wifi - specifically free Wi Fi on my local train service.
I can see the Wi Fi  - it gets as far as Wi-Fi Setting and then fails at Network Settings
I have checked that I am set to DHCP - that is fine
This is really annoying worked fine before I upgraded?
Any ideas please?
Thanks

I'm not totally familiar with Netgear, but when you go in to your Web Browser and go to the router's address (probably http://192.168.2.1). You can then inspect the settings. How are you actually connecting to the Internet? dial-up, DSL or cable?

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

  • Problem with public WiFi requiring disclaimer on iPhone 5

My iPhone has a problem with public WiFi networks that require you to hit the button accepting a disclaimer before you can browse on the Internet. When I click on the network the Log In header pops up but eventually times out with an "Error Opening Page".
The only work around I have found is to disable cellular data access and then try to connect to the WiFi network.  Works fine with cellular data turned off as the disclaimer page pops up quickly.
The big difference I see is the http:/www.apple.com pop up above the Log In header where it's blank if I do not turn off cellular data. If I time out of the WiFi network I'm forced to redo the cellular data on/off to log back in.
    WiFi otherwise works fine.
Anyone found a workaround besides having to manually turn on/off cellular data?

    Hello Enigma118,
It sounds like you are pressing your Sleep/Wake button and the phone is taking a screenshot. I recommend starting by closing all the running apps on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that and restart the phone and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If it persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes with this article:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
And restore it from your backup with this article:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Wifi certificate problem - free public wifi

    Hi
I use a free public wifi access point at work. When I connect, there is a popup that states:
The certificate for this website is invalid. Tap accept to connect to this website anyway.
If I accept, I get redirected to https://1.1.1.1/ , where I have to tap accept to the terms and conditions.
On my macbook, I get the same error about the certificate, but I was able to install the certificate on the macbook, and I no longer have the problem.
I then tried to install the certificate on the iphone, by exporting it from keychain, and emailing it to my gmail imap account.
When I tap on the attachment, I get this error:
"Profile could not be validated. Profile is missing Version Number."
I use another university wifi access point, with which I have done the same procedure, with no issues.
Is there any way to modfiy the certificate, or to force the iphone to accept it?
    Thanks

System Preferences > Network > (click Airport in the list on the left) > click Advanced > Airport tab, select "Free Public WiFi" in the list and click the - sign at the bottom.
If you're prompted to join that network in the future, click No.
"Free Public WiFi" is a computer-to-computer network that's automatically created by some Windows machines. It's a nuisance, courtesy of Bill.

  • Problems getting my wifi going

Using the Linksys WET54G V3.0 and a Netgear router, model not available currently.
I am able to connect to the WiFi network, and the router shows the WET on the list of "attached" devices, but the WET cannot browse the internet. What am I doing wrong?
If anyone has similar hardware, how did you manage to get the WET working?

You're not confusing this with a shared Photo Stream...?
Because the short answer is no, photos don't appear unless they were put there by someone with your Apple ID credentials. To rule out that possibility, change your Apple ID password by carefully following all these instructions:
iCloud: Change your iCloud account password
If you decide to change your password, and you also want to change your Apple ID, I recommend you do not concurrently change your Apple ID until sufficient time has passed and you are confident the password change has been effected on all your iOS devices. 24 hours ought to be more than enough.
It is not necessary to change your Apple ID unless it is an email address you no longer wish to use.

  • MBP will not connect to public WiFi site, iPhone does with no problems.

My MacBook Pro (late 2010), refuses to connect to many Public WiFi networks. However, my iPhone has no issues. Typically, I will be in a coffee shop or airport lounge. I'll take out my iPhone and launch Safari. Safari will try for a second or two to connect, and then a "Login" page will pop up. Usually it is simply a request to accept the Terms & Conditions for the access provider. Tick the "I Accept" box and continue. Same location, using my MBP, I launch Safari and Safari tries to connect and does nothing. Spinning Beach Ball. I do not get the "Accept" page with the Terms & Conditions. Any ideas why this works with the iPhone and not the MBP? This is a chronic problem for me and I'm getting tired of it. Thanks for any assistance.

Can you get the settings you have on your Realtek® 802.11b/g wireless LAN.
You can get to these properties by following instructions:

  • My iphone 5 does not remember the password of my home network. Well this is ot the case with my ipad. The wifi gets disconnected every 2 minutes. Its not any problem with my wifi router as my ipad and other devices work fine. So how do i fix this problem?

Well my iphone 5 does not remember my home network. This is not a problem with the wifi router as the ipad works absolutely fine. The wifi loses it connection in just 2 minutes. So could you please fix this problem.

Not unless the modem is causing a problem.
What you want to do is get it to work reliably over Ethernet first, then tackle wifi. Power off the modem. On your macbook, delete the Ethernet configuration and the Wifi configuration. Power up the modem, then connect the mac via Ethernet. Create the new Ethernet configuration and see if you can connect.

  • Can the iPad get a virus using a public WiFi?

If I went to a public WiFi spot (airport, hotels, McDonalds, etc.) can my iPad get hit with a virus being that it's not protected with an antivirus?

No, it cannot. The iPad is a closed system and you cannot download the types of things that would normally infect a windows computer.

  • Problem getting WiFi to accept my password

Hey All.  Just got my new Kin TwoM tonight!  Yay.   Like someone else said, I had to call Verizon to get it activated.  Wouldn't work online.  1st Tech Support couldn't get it programmed manually, but Tier II got it programmed.  That took a good 30 minutes.  Now I'm trying to get WiFi working.  I turned on Wifi and it's detecting my home network, but it won't recognize my password.  Keeps saying it's wrong.  Now it's an easy password for me to remember, but I figured I better double check my password that I have written down and filed away, and I do have the correct password.  It's all numeric, and I thought maybe I was using the letter O instead of a zero, but the zero is up in the top row with all the numbers so that's not the problem. I then went into my router to make sure I didn't go and change the password at some point, but the password is what I've  had it set to for years and what I'm trying to get the phone to accept.    Anyone else have a problem getting WiFi to accept the password?  My router is a Dlink.  The phone is showing it as WEP, so I thought maybe there's a problem with the phone and WEP and maybe I should try another encryption.  Or do I have to allow access in my router or something?. I went in and disabled the password on my router and the Kin was able to connect fine.  I enabled the password again, re-entered it on my phone and it won't connect with the password.  Any other ideas?  Thanks, Pam

Oh this is frustrating.  I finally got my phone wifi to connect to my home network once by manually adding my network, but I couldn't seem to get it connected again when I try the same way.   When I was connected, I still couldn't open any webpages, but it did download my email.  BUT...it wouldn't open any email unless it was text only.  I was wondering if it was because I turned off Data Services in my Verizon account.  I thought you had to do that so that you wouldn't accidentally connect to 3G when there was no WiFi.   I did try to renew my IP, but no change.  I tried manually connecting to my home network another 10 times or so, and I finally got it to connect again, and I can now access the internet.  The wifi on this phone must be VERY buggy.  That's a real dissapointment since the phone has so many great features.  I suppose it is possible that my phone has an faulty Wifi.  I'll see if I have problems connecting to wifi elsewhere.  I did try at work yesterday and couldn't get connected, but I wasn't sure how good the wifi was at work so I didn't really worry about that.  I am NOT going to mess with the wifi connection to my home network now that I finally got it connected.  Hopefully after I turn off wifi, it will be able to reconnect the next time I turn it on.  One can hope anyway!

  • Can too much memory lead to a kernel panic on a MacBook Pro? specs 2.4GHz intel core i7 16GB DDR3 RAM   late2011..My laptop began suffering from kernel panics 3 mos ago first noticed using public wifi. Gone thru apple support all the way to engineers

Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night  attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card.  The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit.  I would describe my use as "light"  based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support  and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted  3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix  graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue  given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble.  Does that make sense?  Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge.  Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

The RAM needs specs as shown below.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

  • Macbook pro cannot connect to public wifi

I am running OS X Lion 10.7.2 on a recently purchased Macbook Pro. I can connect to my home network and other family homes just fine, and I can connect to networks where there has been a sign-up process, for example my college wifi and our local leisure centre. But I've found I cannot connect to wifi in areas such as- On trains, in costa/ starbucks (so bt openzone, the cloud etc), and in the Apple store of all places! These I deem to be 'public wifi' and cannot seem to connect to them. I don't get any error messages or anything, my macbook will find the network and show that it had connected, but when I try and open Safari, pages will just not load. Any help appreciated!

That's a problem only your network administrator can solve.

  • Using Airport for office network and still connect to public wifi

    HI
I work in the public sector and we have open public wifi network that we can connect to, but have no control over and would never be given no access by our service user. we are a small sub contractor in a office tucked away.
We have 3 Macs and 2 wifi printers and several iPhones and iPads, our thought was to link them all and create a mini local network using the Airport extreme but still stay connected to the Wifi. as the only other option would be a 4G router but that is hit and miss with the connection.
After much stubbornness on my behalf i can not seem to fathom a way round this problem, is there a solution with the devices we have
    Ian

No we can't get access from the company we work for they let us have wifi access only with no controls.
and the building has no phone access as we are in the middle of a hospital.
the office has all its devices and printers that we can't link but separately we can connect to the guest wifi
