Problems Importing a PageMaker 6.52 file into FrameMaker 9

I have an 11-year old file that I need to import into either InDesign CS5 or FrameMaker 9 on Windows 7. The file was originally done on a Mac, so it had no extension. I have tried adding the .PM6 extension, but when that didn't work, I tried the .P65 extension. I know from the PDF properties that the file was done in PageMaker 6.52, but I don't have PageMaker, and neither does the original author at this point.
When I try to impor the file into FrameMaker 9, I get this message: "The filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation."
When I try to import the file into InDesign CS5, I get this message: "The PageMaker document is damaged and cannot be recovered." (Note that I am using CS5, not CS2, so the issues I've seen posts about should not apply.)
I could try converting the PDF, but I'd like to get this file converted if that is possible.
I am posting this in the InDesign forum as well to see if they may have any insights.
Tammy

Tammy,
The file might actually be damaged. If you have the PDF, then you can try exporting as RTF from that and re-build it in FM. The layout models are different between FM and PM, so you'd have to do some clean-up anyway. As long you can get the content into FM, then you can tweak your layouts as required.

  • Problem importing CSV or tab-delimited file into Address Book

I am trying to import a text file (tab delimited) or csv file into address book. The files are created in Excel and consist 8 columns with address info (first name, last name, street, city etc). For the sake of simplicity, the file only contains 2 records - so all in all 3 rows with data where the first row contains the headers as described above.
I am perfectly able to import the fields first name, last name using Address Book's text import feature. However, as soon as I try to map Address Book's address field (Home, work or other) to my text file's headers, the import wizard stops responding. I can still scroll through the records with the left and right error, but the record count is screwed up ("-3 of 2") and clicking the OK button doesn't result in anything.
So I am able to import the names but not the addresses - so I better rename the Address Book to Name Book
Any clue of what's going wrong?

I've been wrestling with the exact same problem. I have come to a solution, though serendipitously. The address variables belong to a group say address Office.
1 - I creted a column with address Office which clued in AddressBook the the existence of the data for +address Other+ (and it assigned the columns ot the proper data)
2 - address book does have an entry of address with all group elements of same colour, normally. I reassign address other to address office
3 - I also assign address office (in right-hand column) to address office.
At this point I have two groups of address office
4 - I indicate to the second group 'do not import'
    5 - Then hit OK
It seems that this loop is necessary to instantiate the proper group name to the group of variables. Why? who knows. Bad UI? Clearly. Apple engineers should've thought about it before? no kidding...

It could well be that the error message is accurate and the file is damaged.
If you’re on Windows you could download the PM 7 trial and try opening it with that. If that works, resave the file and then move it to InDesign.
BTW, you keep saying import. InDesign cannot import a PM file, it can only open them.

  • How to import large library of .wav files into itunes with tags?

I have an external NAS drive where I imported approximately 400 CDs in .wav format utilizing itunes many years ago. My itunes library was recently corrupted requiring a reinstall of itunes. The .wav files are preserved and are filed by Artist folders containing Album subfolders which contain the tracks listed by number and name. The problem is when I reimport the files into itunes the artist and album name is lost leaving only the track name, which makes it impossible to organize a library of music.
I would like to batch process and import the .wav files on my NAS drive into itunes in either a high-quality mp3 or AAC format with the songs tagged correctly to allow for an organized and searchable library. I would rather not have to reburn all of the CDs since that required substantial time and effort.
I welcome any solution to this problem.

itunes can't do what you want. It will do exactly what you said, lose everything, because wav files don't have ID3 tags. And, I suspect it dumps it all into an "Unknown Album" subfolder under "Unknown Artist".
You can try the tagFromFileName script on this page, brought to you by an apple discussion forum regular turingtest2. I have not used it myself, but have seen posts from several people happy with the results!

  • Lightroom 4.1 - I Cannot import Nikon D300s video / movie files into catalogue - Can you?

    Hi,
I can import all of my movie files produced by other cameras into my Lightroom 4.1 catalogue, I have the most recent version of Quicktime installed and obviously as I can import other camera model movies it proves that the basic Lightroom services and processes are working fine.
When I try to import the movie, first on the import module it says 'unable to create preview' and then it states, 'this movie file contains no video frames'.
I had gone back to Lightroom 3.5, but have since realised this version doesn't publish my movie files to flickr if they are >30Mb due to the way the Lightroom 3 Publishing module craps out on memory usage.
I know the D300s records movies using the J-MPEG codec, but I'm not sure if this is a problem with the codecs installed on my machine or whether Lightroom does not support this codec?
Before I waste another few days on trying to resolve the D300s import issue, can anybody else preview and import their Nikon D300s video files into Lightroom 4 or 4.1?

  • Import 32 GB of AVI files into FCP X?

Hello, I need to import 32 GB of AVI files into FCP X. It seems iMOVIE has no problem accepting AVI's, but FCP X says they are not "importable" (as I believe AVI is not a supported format in FCP X).
Can someone please recommend the best way for me to import 32GB of AVI into FCP X? With brief research, I believe Mpeg Stream Clip (?) would be an option, but I want something efficient and will be able mass convert if necessary (don't want to convert each individual clip).
Also what would be the best filetype to convert the AVI's into?
Any prompt insight would really be appreciated, thanks in advance.
    GSI

Well, I've got time if thats what it takes.
My goal is to convert the 32gb of "AVI files" into something compatible in FCP X without reducing the video quality. I don't know a specific file type, I just imported them from MINI DV into Sony Vegas (and then just dragged the files from Vegas onto an external and now just want them to get into FCP X)
I just downloaded Stream Clip, added 100 clips (4gb) of avi clips to batch list, but am having trouble converting. I tried converting to DV or Quicktime and the response is "Error: Can't create the MOV file"

I bought Numbers because my Excel files would not work with Mavericks. How can I import a non-functioning Excel file into numbers? (As of now, the file NAME transfers but data does not.)

    HI Dave,
I'm surprised you get no message when you attempt opening the Excel document in Numbers.
I'm assuming Numbers 3.1, since you are running Mavericks.
Does the Numbers file that opens show any content?
    Does it contain a table?
    How large?
Does it contain more than one tab (indicating more than one sheet)?
Do those other tabs contain a table?
Have you checked those tables for data content?
There have been cases in the past of imported documents opening with white text on a white background, giving the appearance of containing nothing. Check for this by selecting a block of cells, then applying a Fill colour or a Text colour using the Format button (paintbrush).
I'd also suggest attempting to open the Excel files using LibreOffice, which can be downloaded from the linked website.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • How to batch or individual import Canvas .CVX and .CNV files into AI CS6(mac)?

Is anyone aware how to batch or individually import Canvas .CVX and .CNV files into AI CS6(mac)? I have a large old graphics library representing 10 years of work which would be very nice to convert into Illustrator CS6...

It's not a matter of exporting a file that Windows will recognize; it's a matter of exporting a file format that Illustrator can import or open.
A Mac OS version of Canvas is under development, by the way.

My bad. Typo on my part. I meant one that Adobe will recognize.
Too early yet. I shouldn't try to type before I get my first morning tea.

  • How do you import CSV, tab, and OFX files into multiple Numbers columns

This Apple function from Numbers '08 Help "Importing a Document" does not seem to work:
"You can create a new Numbers spreadsheet by importing a document created in Microsoft Excel or AppleWorks 6. Numbers can also import files in comma-separated value (CSV) format, tab-delimited format, and Open Financial Exchange (OFX) format."
No amount of experimenting with Import, Export, Save As, Paste and Match Style, or using other applications will enable importing CSV, tab, or OFX files into multiple Numbers columns. Instead, all data is imported into a single Numbers column, which then has to be manually and tediously parsed one data element at a time into columns, one row, and one column at a time.

    Jerrold Green1 wrote:
    Joe,
They all have worked here. I'm not presently able to try in Numbers 08, but I know I've done them all.
Just double-clicking a .csv file will open Numbers and display the data in a table. Dragging a .csv file to your Numbers icon on the Dock will open it as a Numbers table. Dragging it to a Sheet in an open Numbers document will make a new table in an existing document, and dragging to a table will insert the csv file into the table you dropped it into.
    CAUTION
With Numbers '08, CSV files must use the comma as delimiter on every setting of decimal separator.
    Numbers '09 behave differently.
With your tab-delimited file open in a word processor, copy it, then paste it into a table in an open Numbers document. When doing this, select a cell in the table, but don't double-click into the text field of the cell, then paste.
Why use this long road when we may import directly Tab Separated Values file (tsv.txt) with Numbers '08 (or '09) ?

Why can I only import xml, xdp, or xfd files into my pdf form? Text (tab delimited) is not an option. I'm using Acrobat X Pro. Thank you in advance!

Hello George -- The form was not created by me, but appears to have originated in Acrobat.  I also saved a copy with LiveCycle Designer to view/edit in design view.  Unfortunlately both files had the same limited formats for import.  Thanks, Julie

  • Import a .srt or .sub file into QuickTime movie

How do I import a .srt or .sub file into QuickTime movie (i.e. pre-made subtitles). I don't want to burn or create a new copy of this movie. I'd just like to view this movie (which is in Italian) with the *.srt subtitle file that came with it.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   QuickTime 7.1.6

Thank you Dave, but unfortunately I've tried both of these. Well, I don't have QT-Pro, just the regular OEM version and incorporated the TitleLab components to my Library > QuickTime folder, but to no success.
Do you think that this TitleLab software will work properly on OS X 10.4 and QuickTime 7? This product is designed to run on the following operating systems: Mac OS Classic, Mac OS X 10.1 & Mac OS X 10.2...
So, the upgraded QuickTime 7 Pro doesn't have a native subtitling ability? That's unfortunate!
I also tried the Perian "JackKnife" beta version. It doesn't quite work... It pretty much places the subtitles in brand new blank screens (not aligned with the film at all). I.e. The film will run, talking will occur, then the screen will go blank and the subtitles will appear at the top, then the subtitles will disappear (after the same duration as the film portion) and the film will resume... Essentially, it's messed up.
    Thanks. Maybe another suggestion?

  • Migrating an SGML File into FrameMaker

I have an SGML file that's based on a DTD that was created using another program. I'd like to migrate the SGML file over to FrameMaker.
    I was wondering:
    1) How do you convert a DTD to an EDD?
    2) How do I then create a file that's based on that EDD?
    3) Can an SGML file be somehow imported into FrameMaker?
    Thanks,

    Hi blhowes...
    1) You can create an EDD from a DTD using the .. StructureTools > Open DTD .. command. This creates an EDD from your DTD. You will need to do a bit of work on the EDD to make it useful .. like assigning the proper object types to certain elements, and setting up the context rules for formatting.
    2) You don't create a file from an EDD, you create a file from a template (which has an EDD imported into it). You need to create a structure application, which contains a DTD, a template (with the imported EDD), read/write rules, and possibly other bits. Once you have a structure application you can create a file from the template that's part of that app.
    3) You don't import an SGML file into FrameMaker, you open it in Frame. Once you have created a structure application that supports your model (based on your DTD), you can open the SGML file, and open that file using your structure application.
You should review the information in the Structured Application Developer's Guide/Reference ..
         http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/framemaker
For the fundamental info on structure application development, you can use most any version of this document (from FM7.2 on up). There is an FM9 version available, but I'm not sure where it is. (You'd think that Adobe could get these docs all in the same place.)

  • Importing "Corrupt" Libraries/Images/xmp Files Into LR 1

I've experienced the "corrupt library" problem experienced by so many, in which LR 1 tries to "upgrade" libraries that worked perfectly well in beta 4.1, but then apologizes because they're "corrupt"--and then exits when you hit the OK button to acknowledge the false error report (because OK is the only option you're given). I eventually fired up LR 1 successfully by first moving the existing library out of its subfolder in My Pictures. While that's a start, I do not want to forever lose the crops, tonality adjustments, etc. that I made in LR beta, so what's the next step?
When I look at my "old" folders in Windows Explorer, I can see the RAW image files and their corresponding .xmp files. If I try to Import one of those old folders into new LR 1, however, I only have the option to select "Supported Files," which do not include those beta-created .xmps. [Aside: Missing is the Select Folder button to automatically import the entire folder. What's up with that downgrade from beta???]
So, if I Ctrl + a to select the entire contents of an old folder, all my RAW images get imported fine into LR 1, but not the information regarding the prior LR beta edits. Does anyone know a trick for recovering that beta-generated information--which, I assume, resides in the .xmp files, which I'm not given the option of importing into LR 1?
Hopefully, Adobe won't abandon all of us who helped them beta-test the product.

I'm also struggling with this frustrating 'corrupt library' syndrome, and I haven't imported anything from the Beta, I created a whole new library in version 1. When prompted to back up I got the dreaded corruption warning. Any bright sparks out there figured out an easy way around this?
