Problems patching a box running Solaris 9

We've been recommended to install patch 112233-12 on our Solaris box by sun - to check whether that stops various hangs and so forth.
The problem is as follows:
# uname -a
SunOS $host 5.9 Generic_112233-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-80
# patchadd 112233-12
Checking installed patches...
One or more patch packages included in
112233-12 are not installed on this system.
Patchadd is terminating.
# echo $?
8
# showrev -p
No patches are installed
Okay, first of all, this system has been patched with Suns clusterpatches several times, as indicated by our current kernel revision number in uname -a. Secondly, I fail to see how a return code of 8 (package not installed..) can be correct for a kernel patch ...
So, any input on what is wrong here?
regards,
Rune Kristian Viken

Rune,
Solaris 9 kernel version 112233-11 is from April 2004, so your system's patch level is almost two years out of date. Version 112233-12 was from August 2004 and also has been obsoleted by other, subsequent, kernel patches..

I suggest you work with your local Sun support center to get the entire Solaris 9 Recommended Patch Cluster onto the system.

  • Boot problem for Ultra 60 running Solaris 9

I have a Sun Ultra 60 which, until the beginning of this month, was running Solaris 9 just fine. Following an emergency stop, the system refused to boot. At the ok prompt the boot command drew the response
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@0,0 file and args:
after which the system would hang, responding only to a mechanical power-off. The command boot -F failsafe gives the response
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@0,0 file and args -F failsafe
    Boot load failed
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable
after which the system returns the ok prompt without hanging, but without booting either. All OpenBoot (v. 3.23) test and diagnostic commands return normal responses.
Raising the diag-level to max, changing the diag-device to disk, and setting diag-switch? to true gets the same responses, with the following additional information:
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk0,0 File and args -F failsafe
    Loading ufs-file-system package 1.4. 04 Aug 1995 13:02:54
    FCode UFS Reader 1.12 00/07/17 15:48:16
    Loading: /platform/SUNW, Ultra-60/failsafe
    Loading: /platform/sun4u/failsafe
    Boot load failed
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable
after which the system returns the ok prompt without booting.
Some fixes which do not work: I tried booting from CD, either the Solaris 9 software CDs or the Solaris 8 software CDs (obtained directly from Sun); these yield
    Redirected to slice: 1
    Loading: /platform/SUNW, Ultra-60/ufsboot
    Loading: /platform/sun4u/ufsboot
after which the system hangs (only mechanical shutoff works), or if the flag -F failsafe is used, the failsafe file is loaded, ``the file just loaded does not appear to be executable,'' and the system returns the ok prompt. I also tried making a bootable floppy disk by installing a bootblock, the ufsboot executable, and the kernel/unix executable from a working SunBlade 150 onto a floppy. The command boot floppy works as above, and can be forced to load the ufsboot file from the floppy, but ``the file just loaded does not appear to be executable''; the system returns the ok prompt without booting, but at least without hanging.
Presumably this is a bootblock problem, or an OpenBoot problem. But how can I restore a system (restore what?) which will not boot in the first place? Any advice is much appreciated.

Some additional information which may (or may not) shed light on this problem: If the system hangs with diag-switch? set to true, then powering off and back on becomes rather difficult. The power-on led on the front panel may flash for several minutes, with no display on the monitor. If there is no CD in the cdrom drive and no floppy in the floppy drive, the led goes off (the system is on--I can hear the hard drives spinning) for about a minute, after which the test lights on the SCSI peripherals light up, and the monitor comes on. It shows a long series of ``Probing ... '' lines which look normal, followed by the usual banner, followed by ``Resetting memory at ...,'' which runs through a series of addresses. This is followed by ``Power On Self Test Failed Cause: SIMM U0701,'' then the usual ok prompt. Then all the OpenBoot commands except boot appear to operate normally. So--
    1) Is this a hardware failure of one of the system's DIMM memory cards? Would that, in itself, account for the failure to boot, both from disk and from CD?
    2) If so, and replacing this card would solve the problem, is the required DIMM a generic item or a component specific to the Ultra 60?
    Any advice is much appreciated.

  • Run solaris 11 on 32 bit oracle VM virtual Box  (windows)

    Hi All,
Is there any way to run Solaris 11 (64bit only), on a 32 bit windows machine using oracle VM virtual Box ?
    Thanks

"VirtualBox's 64-bit guest support (added with version 2.0) and multiprocessing (SMP, added with version 3.0) both require hardware virtualization to be enabled. (This is not much of a limitation since the vast majority of today's 64-bit and multicore CPUs ship with hardware virtualization anyway; the exceptions to this rule are e.g. older Intel Celeron and AMD Opteron CPUs.)

  • Patch Pro Installation on Solaris 9

I've been attempting to install Patch Pro 2.0 for a Solaris 9 install. I can't seem to find the needed install file to download. I've followed the instructions that I've found on Sun's document "Signed Patches Administration Guide for PatchPro 2.2". The document says to download for Solaris 9 can be found on SunSolve. The only link that I can find on the SunSolve page has a download for Solaris 8 (http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=40c8c2ad) This download doesn't work because the OS is a different version.
I don't know if this is an oversite of Sun on their web site. If someone knows where to find the needed download for Patch Pro for Solaris 9 it would be greatly appreciated.

    go to http://www.sun.com/download
look under A to Z section
Product Downloads Sun Patch Manager 2.0
Please note mentioned in the downlaod page: quote from the Web page:
"CAUTION: If you already have Sun Patch manager 2.0 installed on your Solaris 9 system, subsequently installing revisions 28-34 of patch ID 112945 on SPARC[R] systems or revisions 18-25 of patch ID 114193 on x86 systems broke Patch Manager. To correct this problem, you must first run the /usr/lib/patch/pmunsetup script to uninstall Patch Manager. When prompted to uninstall the J2SE[tm] software, answer no. Then, install Patch Manager (at least patch 112945-35 (SPARC) or 114193-26 (x86)). "
or just load the lastest recommended patches and updates (assuming the SUNWppro and SUNWpcfg patch pro config package is uninstalled)
make sure the files exist in /etc/parch or touch patch.conf and secret.conf and then run the smpatch or pprosetup options for your sunsolve contract userid and password is placed in /usr/lib/.sunsolvepw file and is set for perm of 600.
also if you do not go through a web proxy then enter in a pprosetup -x <cr> to null web proxy values out. and check the dmesg for errors.

  • Patch 121308-12 breaks solaris management console

    Dear Moderator,
    Hope not asking too much.
Could you notify your counterparts that patch 121308-12 breaks Solaris Management Console?
SMC doesn't load the tool box after patch 121308-12 is applied. I backed out the patch and SMC works fine. Patch 121308-11 is fine.
I had to remove the patch from 50+ servers.
I am running Solaris 10 update 3 on my servers.
What I really want is a version 13 of the patch 121308 that obsoletes version 12. This way, I don't have to worry about this anymore everytime sunUC patches my servers.

  • Problem setting up networking in Solaris 8

    Hi,
I have been struggling for a couple of days with the following problem:
I am running Solaris 8 on an Intel networked machine. The NIC is D-Link DFE-530TX+, I had to download a beta driver for Solaris 8 from Realtek (this NIC uses a Reltek 8139 chipset). As far as I could see the driver installation went OK, I see the Ethernet interface with "ifconfig -a".
I am using a home network with a Linux gateway to a cable Internet connection. The problem is, however, that the gateway (or any other machine on the local network) is not visible from my new Solaris 8 box. When I try to ping other machines on the network, the Solaris 8 box first broadcasts an ARP request to resolve the IP address to a hardware address -- I verified that with "snoop" and could also see that the network switch was showing traffic to all nodes. It seems, however, that none of the other machines reply or that they reply but the Solaris box does not get the answer... I tried to "hardcode" the Ethernet hardware addresses of the other machines into ARP (as in "arp -s <host_name> <hardware_address>") -- the result was that the Solaris did not do the ARP broadcast before the ping (since it had the hardware address of the pinged box) but it also did not receive a reply to any of the ping requests (this time, the network switch showed traffic between the Solaris box and the pinged box only).
Exactly the same problem occurs when I try to ping the Solaris box from other boxes on the local network (first, no reply to the ARP broadcast, then, after hardcoding the Ethernet address, no reply to the ping request). It seems that the Solaris and the rest of the machines on the network do not speak the same language :)
I am really kind of stuck since I do not know if it is a problem with the beta driver for the D-Link DFE-530TX+ (unlikely) or something that I am doing wrong (likely). I considered using another NIC to test if I sould configure the machine fine but I decided to check if anyone can help me with an advice.
Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

    Hi,
It's me again. Just wanted to give some more information...
I could confirm that the Solaris 8 box actually transmits data on the network via the D-Link DFE-530TX+ adapter but does not receive anything. What I did was:
    1. A "tcpdump" (Linux stuff) on the gateway Linux machine and then a "ping" from the Solaris 8 machine to the Linux box with no ARP setup on the Solaris 8 box (the Solaris box first sends an ARP request to get the MAC address of the Linux box). The Linux machine showed that it does receive the ARP requests (something like "who is linux.machine.name") and that it does send back its MAC address to the Solaris box (something like "linux.machine.name is at MAC ..."). The Solaris machine did not receive crap ("snoop" did not show anything and "netstat" showed no incoming packages).
    2. Same thing as above but specified the Linux machine MAC in ARP manually. Solaris did not send the ARP request but sent an ICMP echo request right away from the "ping". The Linux box got the request ("tcpdump" showed that) and sent an acknowledgement back. Solaris did not see crap again.
    3. A "ping" request from Linux to Solaris. Linux sent the ARP request first to get the MAC of Solaris and (you may have already guessed it) Solaris did not receive crap and Linux decided that Solaris is unreachable.
    4. Same as 3 but I ran it a short period of time after case 1 (note that the ARP request from the Solaris box was received during case 1 and had the Solaris MAC address in it which Linux wisely cached and used for the ICMP echo request from the "ping" instead of trying to obtain it like in case 3). Well, it should sound familiar, but Solaris did not see crap again.
Actually, I think it is impossible for my Solaris machine to receive anything on the D-Link DFE-530TX+ adapter using the RealTek driver (rtls is the name). After a day of futile efforts, netstat showed 0 incoming packages.
I am about ready to give up... My D-Link card is revision C1 which, according to the D-Link support people, should have a RealTek 8139 chipset (that is NOT the name printed on the chip itself). Obviously either the RealTek driver is buggy or the chipset on my card is not what it is...
Any (last) suggestions are welcome. Is there anybody out there that used ANY drivers for the D-Link DFE-520TX+ and got it working? Anybody?

  • Problem with one box

One box in my house is not getting all channels and other channels are digitized. All other boxes are fine. Rebooting does not help. Ideas?

Could be a problem with the connection. Make sure everything is tight both at box and at splitter.
If that doesn't help, swap the boxes around. If problem follws, you have a bad box, if not, still a problem with that coax run. Could also try swapping ports on the splitter.

  • Problems patching VirtualBox s10x_u8 BE

    Hi,
I'm having problems patching a VirtualBox Solaris 10 x86 environment with the latest patch cluster from December.
I've unloaded the zip file in /var/tmp and attempted to apply-prereq to the current BE prior to the ABE. This fails during the checkinstall process for 119255-71 (patching of patchadd etc). These are the first patches applied to this s10x_u8 install - the only additional pkg is SUNWvboxguest.
    It reports:
    /var/tmp/10_x86_Recommended/patches/119255-71/SUNWinstall-patch-utils-root/install/checkinstall: /var/tmp/10_x86_Recommended/patches/119255-71/SUNWinstall-patch-utils-root/install/checkinstall: cannot open
pkgadd: ERROR: checkinstall script did not complete successfully
I've tried applying this patch outside 'installcluster' using patchadd and the same issue is reported.
I cannot see anything obvious in any of the 'readme's and checked a number of solutions regarding loopback filesystems etc.
Are there any further methods of debugging this issue and does anyone know why this patchadd is not working?

    Hi Darren,

  • Running Solaris 11 from a USB drive with persistent changes - possible?

I am wanting to use Solaris 11 as the basis of a NAS for home use; the hardware is a HP N40L Microserver populated with 5 HDDs. As all of these HDDs will be used for data storage in a zpool configuration, I have no more physical space (without further hacks) inside the case for an additional OS drive. Therefore, I am wondering if it is possible to run Solaris 11 from a fast USB flash drive. I know there is a live USB image, but AFAIK, any configuration changes made when running this will not remain after a reboot - is this correct? And if so, is there any way to make the changes persistent?
The only discussion I could find on this subject is this thread from a couple of years ago: https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2235078 - but I don't think the guy got a definitive answer.

Running the important rpool on USB stick is not my favorite configuration. I would recommend reducing your data pool down to 4 devices and putting your root pool on the 5th disk. People ask about this in the datacenter and I wrote a best practice for it, which is not to use a USB stick for rpool, here:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/html/E29007/zfspools-4.html#gentextid-12349
Your data is important, but the root pool is very important for keeping your data available. In the datacenter, we also worried that rack vibration might wiggle the stick right out of the drive. For home use, I've heard about pets jumping on boxes and disconnecting disk cables. Sounds paranoid, but I've seen it/heard it all.
There is no reason why you can't put rpool on a USB stick, some operations might not be easy (see Dave's post), but I don't think its the best choice for optimal data availability.
    Thanks, Cindy

  • V490 running solaris 9 with warning messages:

I have a V490 running solaris 9 with the full recommended patch cluster and the SFS_base packages (and the additional patches) installed.
Installed in the V490 is 1* SG-XPCI2FC-QF2-Z (dual 2Gb fibre card). On rebooting the v490 the follwing warning appears:
WARNING: fctl: ULP FCSM version mismatch; please upgrade FCSM
Does anyone know if this is a major issue and if so is there a fix?
I have never seem this message before as we usually use the X6768A and maybe there is some difference in the card.

I am having the same issue after installing the card "SG-XPCI1FC-QF4" on V490.
    I have opened a ticket.
Is this a major issue or missing patches?.

  • Has anyone in this Forum had problems with installing and running Adobe apps on the new MacPro?

Has anyone in this Forum had problems with installing and running Adobe apps on the new MacPro?
I have been trying to install Photoshop CS6 & CC and Acrobat Pro XI on my Mac Pro (late 2013). I keep getting a 'configuration' error message and wondered if the problem was wide spread.
    TIA,
    Jerry

    Thanks, Martin.
Good to hear someone has had success. The lack of it here is frustrating and depressing.
    Thanks again,
    Jerry
