Problems running 16-bit programs in (32-bit) Windows 10TP

When I try to run (any) 16-bit program (that runs just fine under Windows XP and Windows 7) under W10TP Build 9860, I get the following error message:
"16-BIT MS-DOS SUBSYSTEM. Command prompt <program name>. NTVDM has encountered a system error. A device attached to the system is not functioning. Choose 'close' to terminate the application."
So, I tried setting compatibility mode (for all users) to "Windows XP SP3", and found that (some) of the programs would run, although CMD.EXE opens a separate window as though they were run with a "Start" command.
However, many of them will not run even with compatibility mode set. And, the error message window opens and closes so rapidly that it is impossible to see what the message is!
I tried setting compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2, 98 and 95 with no difference in the aforementioned behavior.
Then an even stranger anomaly occurred! I unchecked "compatibility mode" for one of the programs, and ran it so I could copy the above-listed error message verbatim. Then I rechecked "compatibility mode" (for all users). Now, when I run
the program from the command prompt, it gives me the same error message as when CM is NOT checked, but if I run it from (right-click) Start > Run, or Windows-key +R, or by clicking on the program in Windows explorer, it does run!
I tried this with a second program, and obtained the same mysterious results!
So what is causing these events, and what is the solution? Why should unchecking and rechecking CM alter the behavior of the program when run from the command prompt?
An additional question: The 'compatibility mode' settings are stored in "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers" /v <program name> /d WINXPSP3
When I set this value via Properties, it gives the entries a value of "~ WINXPSP3", but it appears that a value of "WINXPSP3" (set via Regedit or Reg.exe) has the same effect. What is the purpose of the "~"?
Thank you for your input.

Hi
i have the same issue and behavior with CM option
i am just wondering something. Did you installed it in a virtual machine?
i did it with vmplayer and i see is there no video card installed in the system
i dont know if this issue can be connected by the presence and the configuration of virtual machine or is just a bug of the W10 preview version
the fact is that it happens also if you try to use the edit.com command present in the system

  • Possible to run a 32 bit program in 64 bit Windows 7 Pro?

    Hi
    I've ordered a Thinkpad X220 which here in UK only comes with 64 bit version of windows 7 pro. Problem is that there a couple of programs which i use which only run in 32 bit windows (no 64 bit version available) and they run fine in my existing Win 7 32 bit version...i've tried them on a friend's pc running 64 bit Win 7 Ultimate and they do not work. Is there any way to make these programs work in Win 7 Pro 64 bit on my soon-to-arrive X220? If i downloaded and installed 'Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC" on my X220, would this help in making the 32 bit programs work on my 64 bit Win 7?

    Phychopomp1,
    Windows 7 64 bit is able to run 32 bit programs. However, some programs will have issues.
    Have you checked your programs against the Windows 7 compatibility list: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=2394
    This should tell you if they are compatible or not with Windows 7 64-bit.
    There are compatibility settings that you can try once you have installed the software also. Right click on the shortcut and choose properties, then go to the compatibility tab and try the various OS settings.
    If those things fail, then you should try Windows XP Mode (convenience link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx). This will allow you to install your programs in a virtual copy of Windows XP SP3 using Windows Virtual PC. Once XP Mode is installed, when you install your software into it, you will get a shortcut to use the program from your Windows 7 start menu without even seeing the XP Mode window.
    Hope this helps,

  • How to install 32 bit program with 16 bit installer on Windows 8.1 32 bit

    Hi,
    I have installed a 32 bit program that uses a 16 bit installer on Windows XP machines.  The software developer of this program is out of business.
    Can Windows 8.1 32 bit run a 16 bit installer?  If not, any suggestions as to how I might install this program?
    Thanks in advance!!!

    Hi
    You need to  to install Windows XP in Hyper-V, because start from windows 8, they no longer support 16bit program.
     or you already try DOSBox?

  • Problem running a concurrent program from Reports

    Hi,
    I've come across a problem while running a concurrent program from Reports. The report is executed OK and at the end, I call a concurrent program by firing fnd_request.submit_request. I catch then the req_id returned and it gives me 0. I tried to replace the concurrent program, which is a UNIX shell script, with just a simple script that echos "hello", but anyway, I get 0 as return value from fnd_request.submit_request.
    The next step I tried to set apps_initialize with proper vUSER_ID, vRESP_ID and vRESP_APPL_ID, but did not get away with that. My last try was to hardcode vUSER_ID to a sysadmin user, in case this was rights-related issue but did not work as well.
    Am now looking into a possibility of actually getting the error, why it failes. I found some posts where FND_MESSAGE.RETRIEVE and FND_MESSAGE are used but this apparently does not work under Reports (am using reports builder v. 9.2.0.4.0).
    Any suggestions how to solve this issue?
    Thanks,
    David Lacina.

    Hi,
    Make sure that the concurrent program you are calling exists (case sensitive) and is enabled.
    Create a PL/SQL package and use that to call your request - the you'll be able to use fnd_message.

  • Running an External Program from Batch on Windows Server 2008R2 Failing

    Hi,
    I am trying to run an external program from a batch job and it is failing with this error message:
    Ext. prog.: ERROR: Input redirection is not supported, exiting the process immediately.
    Ext. prog.: External program terminated with exit code 1
    The program I am trying to run is:  timeout
    This command works on the OS: timeout -t 30
    I have setup the step to look like this:
    Under External Program:
    -Name: timeout
    -Parameter: -t 30
    I have also tried:
    -Name: timeout -t -30
    -Parameter:
    I am running ECC 6.04 on top of Windows Server 2008R2 with SQL Server 2008R2.
    When we were running in Server 2003 on ECC 6.0 I was able to use the Sleep program just fine in the same manner.  I have found out that sleep is not available in server 2008.  It was replaced with timeout.
    After an update to EHP4 and moving to Windows Server 2008R2, Is there any pre-work that needs to be done on the SAP or Windows side before we can run external programs?
    Thank you,

    No - this is no more true like that since Windows 2008, it's a bit more complex:

  • Problem running Tech Communication suite on 64-bit, Vista machine?

    I recently upgraded to Vista 64 bit system. I had problems installing Tech Communciation suite 1.0, which was running fine on 32-bit, XP machine.
    With great difficulty, I was finally able to install but now I am having problems in creating pdfs from Framemaker. Has anyone experienced this problem too?
    My colleague who is running Tech Suite 1.0 on 64-bit XP machine is having problem opening Robohelp 7 HTML. The RH Software Setup screen appears and asks for serial number of this product. When she enters the serial number, it does not recognize it.
    Please help?
    Thanks,

  • Windows 8.1 64 bit installs 32 bit browser (Internet Explorer 11) but user would go on installing 64 bit programs which 32 bit browser (Internet Explorer 11) rejects, how to stop this?

    For many days I searched for answer of how an Internet Explorer add-on installed because few websites won't run without it, but Windows OS or Internet Explorer itself won't allow install of these add-ons.
    Please note following problems:
    1. Windows 8.1 64 bit operating system installs 32 bit Internet Explorer 11, but this 32 bit Internet Explorer won't accept 64 bit add-ons which I tried to install for 64 bit Windows 8.1, incompatibility of 64 bit and 32 bit which
    I knew already but didn't clicked even on posting forum questions not before 'ORACLE's message in yellow.
    2. For 64 bit Windows I kept on trying to install 64 bit add-ons for Internet Explorer, which won't install or would send message 'Incompatible', once default installations of these add-on's are disturbed but not completely uninstalled, new installations
    won't be entertained at all, only way is reinstall of Internet Explorer.
    3. Therefore I installed Apple's 'Safari', which also displayed same messages, but allowed install of 'Quick Time', and now I listen to my favourite songs on a great sound system of a website.
    4. Windows needs correction for this.
    Best of Luck.

    Use the 32-bit version of IE. All rivals are 32-bit, no need for x64, a browser is not so big.

  • Some differences in Java settings giving me problems running a java program

    Hello,
    We have a Java app in our web-site. We haven't done that app our self and it has been working for quite some time.
    Now on my computer the java app loads just nicely.
    But for other users there java app crashes. So basically there has to be somekind of settings problem between.
    But we have checked the settings and I simply can't find the difference.
    The other users keep getting error that class not found.

    We have Windows Xp sp3 and Internet Explorer 8 in use.
    I actually made a clean Xp install the otherday. Installing latest java and no security settings added from domain. Also I put the site on trusted sites and allowed all in IE. And I still got that error in that new clean Xp install. On my personal computer the Java app still works just fine. Unlucky the one who has done the Java app is not able to help us.

  • Problems running a java program

    Hello,
    I have absolutely no java experience whatsoever, and I need to fix a program that suddenly stopped running properly after several years without problems. Basically, I have a perl script that calls a java program. Everytime I run this perl script from the web browser, the java program returns an internal error:
    # # HotSpot Virtual Machine Error, Internal Error # Please report this error at # http://www.blackdown.org/cgi-bin/jdk # # Error ID: 5649525455414C53504143450E4350500024 # # Problematic Thread: prio=5 tid=0x804e680 nid=0x6d16 runnable #
    However, when I run the perl script command line, it runs fine. I added the -verbose option to the java call, and I discovered that the program stops running after it opens the .jar files but before it loads them .... these files have full read permissions, so I don't think that's the problem. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    ...fix a program that suddenly stopped running properly after several years without problems.Which means either the program changed or the environment changed. I would guess the environment. The most likely possibilities: new version of the operating system, new version of perl, new version of java. Also possible: new version installed of any of the previous without removing older versions, new software not associated with the first, new mapped drives and/or changed env vars.

  • 64 bit program on 32 bit system.

    I need to run After Effects CS5 and my early Mac Book Pro is 32 bit. Is there a way around this?

    Specifically which model? If it's a Core 2 Duo then it is 64-bit. If it's Core Duo then it is 32-bit. All CS5 software can run on either unless it's exclusively limited to a model that can boot the 64-bit kernel. Early MBPs cannot boot the 64-bit kernel.

  • Problems running a simple program

    I just installed java on my home machine and I am new to Java. I typed in a simple HelloWorld program and saved it to my c:\temp. It compiled ok and created a .class file. When I run that file, I get the following error message:
    Exception in thread "Main" java.lang.NoClassDefFound error
    How can I correct this?
    Thank you,
    Rich

    Did you run with the command "java XXXX.class"?
    If so, you will get error message like you post.
    run like this:
    java XXXX
    (don't input ".class")

  • Having problem running a servlet program in Tomcat5.5

    Hi,
    I wrote a sample servlet, HelloWorld.java and I compiled it and put the .class file in the WEB-INF\Classes directory in the Tomcat directory. Now when I do this,
    http://localhost:8080/ it's working fine but when I do this, http://localhost:8080/servlet/HelloWorld I am getting an error message "*HTTP Status 404"*.
    I have done no changes to web.xml and server.xml. Should I be doing anything?
    My HelloWorld.Java file is as below.
    package Users.Ravi.Desktop.CurrentProject.Servlets;
    import java.io.*;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    public class HelloWorld extends HttpServlet {
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request,
                        HttpServletResponse response)
          throws ServletException, IOException {
        PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
        out.println("Hello World");
    }Thanks.

    Ah, I see the problem now. You need to put servlet class as
    <code class="jive-code jive-java">Users.Ravi.Desktop.CurrentProject.Servlets.HelloWorld</code>
    <code class="jive-code jive-java">So, your web.xml will have</code>
    <servlet>
         <servlet-name>HelloWorld</servlet-name>
         <servlet-class></code><code class="jive-code jive-java">Users.Ravi.Desktop.CurrentProject.Servlets.HelloWorld</code><code class="jive-code jive-java"></servlet-class>
    </servlet>{code}

  • Problem running DNG Converter from command line in Windows XP

    I'm a frustrated user trying to run Adobe DNG converter from the Windows command line - more specifically from a batch file.
    - Am reasonably conversant with writing batch files
    - Have read the PDF file provided by Adobe
    I just can't figure the correct syntax for adding the command line parameters and, unfortunately, the Adobe PDF file doesn't have verbose examples for idiots like me. Nor can I find any such examples on the Net, or any discussion of this problem in the forums.
    The Adobe PDF instructions state...
    "The parameter list includes the conversion options you want to use, followed by the names of the files to convert."
    As there is no switch to prefix 'the names of the files to convert' I assume I just leave a space and include the path to the source files at the end of the parameter list?
    Here is the batch file line I am trying to use...
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe DNG Converter.exe [parameter list]"
    Where I want to specify in the [parameter list] that...
    (a) The destination directory (-d <directory> parameter) is c:\DNG_files
    (b) And the source files are in directory c:\RAW_files
    Here is the batch line with the parameters entered...
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe DNG Converter.exe -dC:\RAW_files c:\DNG_files"
    I've tried variations of this with space between -d and C:\RAW_files and C:\DNG_files\*.* for the source files parameter.
    I just keep getting DOS erros like "The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect"
    Can anybody help me. I'm clueless how to solve the problem. :-(
    I'm running DNG COnverter version 4.2
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Rob

    Thanks for responding G Sch.
    LOL. Well this lemming doesn't habitually rename .exe files (e.g. Adobe DNG Converter.exe) to a non-spaced alternative either! (Adobe_DNG_Converter.exe)
    Still no luck...

    As you can see (a) Source files exist(b) DNG command line runs without generating an error (c) no output files in destination.

    If I remove everything after the command (i.e. the parameter list stuff) it fires up DNG Converter in interactive mode. Not what I'm after.
    Any other thoughts on what the problem is?
    Thank you.

  • Have problem running the reader 11.0.06 on window 8

    keep shutting down the reader...

    Hello chenxia1118
    If it works, by disabling the Proctected Mode then after 2-3 attempts, reenable the Protected Mode settings. Disabling Protected Mode is not recomended.
