Problems when searching for non-Latin characters

In my studies I often need to search for Japanese terms. I usually do this from the Smart Search Field to go straight to Google. However, Safari seems not to be able to handle the Japanese characters. For example, I might type 日本 into the Smart Search Field. I would then expect to see results about the country of Japan (for that is what I searched). Instead, I see this: http://puu.sh/1MwvG
This is pretty much a dealbreaker for me re: Safari. Is there something that will fix it?

I can't seem to duplicate this.  Are you typing in the same place I am? I see I only have 6.0.1...

  • Mountain Lion Mail cannot search for non-alpha characters in Subject Lines

    Under 10.8.3, Mail 6.3 often cannot successfully find messages if the search string contains a non-alpha character.
    I have only tested this searching for Subject lines that are KNOWN to contain non-alpha characters
    Specfic examples:
    Subject starts with "[ABC..."
    Mail cannot find it if you search using "[ABC"
    Mail CAN find it if you search using just "ABC"
    Subject contains the numeral "2"
    Mail cannont find it if you enter "2" as the search string...even if you further constrain the search to "Subject contains: 2"
    Other problem characters I have found:
    The failure when using square bracket is a real pain since a lot of mailing lists are tagged using strings wrapped in square brackets.
    Sometimes it WORKS when I include multiple non-alpha characters in the search string, like "55" or "4/19"
    Anyone else see this?

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • My group box is causing problems when searching for a text line in a text file.

    I am developing a booking system, so for this I need to ensure that no two clients can book the same appointment slot. So, on testing my code which prevents double booking, the system doesn't seem to find the text line being searched for in the text file
    when it (purposefully) should.
    I have tried isolating the problem using breakpoints, and I've found that when the 'SearchLine' (referring to my code below) does not include the 'TimeComboBox.text' piece and instead this value is written into the code, the system is able to find the SearchLine
    without any problems. But, when assigning the group box's value to a variable and using this in the SearchLine instead, or without even using a loop and just doing a simple line by line search, the program can't find this line of text in the file.
    I'm lost for ideas. I have tried everything I can think of. Could anyone make any suggestions as for what is the problem with my group box? (I'll explain the code beneath it).
    'Setting the value of the SearchLine (which is a String)
    SearchLine = String.Concat(DateTimePicker1.Value.Date & " " & TimeComboBox.text)
    Dim FoundApp As Boolean
    Dim objReader As New System.IO.StreamReader(basicfilepath & "Text Files\Client Booked Appointment DatesTimes.txt")
    FoundApp = False
    'Reading the file's contents and checking for the SearchLine
    Do While (objReader.Peek() <> -1) or (FoundApp = True)
    If (TextLine = SearchLine) Then
    'Line contains SearchLine. Appointment already exists.
    FoundApp = True
    Else
    'Line doesn't contain SearchLine. Carry on searching.
    Msgbox("Line not found.")
    End if
    Loop
    Explanation
    When the line is searched for, the 'FoundApp' value must be set to 'True' when it is found. If it is not found, it remains false.
    To isolate the problem, I've displayed the SearchLine in a message box in the past to make sure that the correct line of text is being searched for.
    In basic terms, my program is searching for the exact line of text which exists in the text file, but for some reason it is not coming up as 'Found'. The error occurs when the group box's value is used. The text file which is being read is
    definitely correct. Please help, any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank you

  • Target system install problem (SAPINST searching for Non unicode kernel)

    Hi,
    I'm currently performing a unicode conversion (from 4.7 to EHP4). I am finished with the upgrade and I'm now in the unicode conversion part.
    I have completed the export and selected unicode as the target system. I am done with source system uninstallation and I'm now installing the unicode target system.  I have selected unicode during the parameter selection (it's the default option anyway) but during the part where it will ask for the kernel DVD, it doesn't accept the path of my unicode kernel (and instead looks for the non-unicode kernel)

    Hi Markus,
    Thanks for your response. This problem is now resolved. It turns out that there are some remaining files from the old /usr/sap/<> and /sapmnt/SID/exe that were not deleted yet (after uninstalling for non unicode system). I proceeded to delete again these files and ensure that there are no files from the non unicode system

  • HAL mounts USB flash devices without support for non-latin characters

    Hey folks!
    How can I make HAL mount USB flash devices with support for German characters such as ä, ö, ü, ß, etc? At the moment there's only a silly question mark instead: http://www12.file-upload.net/20.08.08/3cpcpx.png .
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.

    I think it's a bug in KDE4, because no other window manager or desktop environment has such problems. I had it as well, when I used KDE4.0.* for testing and seems like this remained. Do you have a completely german KDE4? Check the system settings!
    A thing comes to my mind, did you check it with konqueror? I guess this bug appears in dolphin, richtig? I schätz mal schon Try it with konqueror, if it doesn't appear there, it's a dolphin thing

  • Non latin characters in Safari search

    In Safari 6 the search and URL fields are combined. That's fine, except...
    We can no longer search using non-Latin characters, because the field accepts only Latin characters. I was trying to search for a Japanese term, and when I switch to Hiragana input and move to the search field, the input switches back to English.
    What's the workaround??

    The problem has gone away. I suspect it was a problem with corrupted prefs. I trashed the Safari prefs and rebooted to clear another problem and no longer have the problem with search using Japanese characters.
    FWIW, the problem I had when I trashed the prefs was with trying to mail a Safari page. I ran in to this originally a week or two ago and called Apple who told me to delete the Safari prefs and reboot. (Actually they gave an alternate procedure to try first, but I didn't bother.) That appears to be a recurrent problem and since there was no hesitation on the solution when I called I would guess that it will be fixed in an early patch. I had already tried trashing the mail prefs since that's where the problem actually appeared (an extra copy of Mail would open, and then hang) but it was in fact the Safari prefs that was causing the problem. I've had to do the delete-and-reboot routine every few days. Not sure why the reboot is required, but it obviously is since just quitting Safari or even logging out doesn't fix it.

  • Waiting the best solution to strange characters for non-latin songs?

    I've tried to find a solution to the "Strange Characters" when importing songs with non-latin characters (I'm fan of greek music)... I`ve changed the ID3 tags to 2.4 and nothing happened...should I wait for the upgrade?

    On re-reading and following your directions, I really should have given you 10 pts. for that answer, Tom, and not 5.  I'd somehow misunderstood the glyph view, thinking it was only a matrix of a certain standard, limited set of symbols, like arrow dingbats and such. I see the way it works now, and it's quite practical.
    Thanks very much.

    When I click on the Start Icon and type the name of a file I am searching for none appear.
    Using Widows 7

    Are you searching for a file that you downloaded via Firefox?
    If that is the case then you can check the Download Manager (Tools > Downloads) and if that file is listed there then right click that entry and choose > Open Containing Folder. If that entry is grayed then the file is no longer in the original download location and possibly removed by AV software.

  • Non-Latin characters no displaying properly in Safari on iPhone

    I am having an issue where non-English (Chinese, Japanese etc) characters are displaying as squares on the iPhone's Safari browser. I've seen this issue on Windows when you haven't installed support for Asian languages.
    It would appear that the version of OS-X on the iPhones does not have support for non-Latin character sets.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    I am having an issue where non-English (Chinese,
    Japanese etc) characters are displaying as squares on
    the iPhone's Safari browser.
    Could you provide the urls? It may be the pages have bad coding. Correctly coded pages will display according to tests I've seen:

    But unlike OS X the iPhone has no way yet to manually correct for miscoded pages via a View > Text Encoding menu.

  • We cannot type Polish (non-latin) characters in WebDynpro applications

    We cannot type Polish (non-latin) characters in WebDynpro application (in runtime) because 'Browser Help Shortcuts' are fired.
    To type a polish character in polish keyboard you need to press AltGr + letter (ie. AltGr + a/c/e/s/o/l/z/x/n). To type an uppercase polish character you need to press AltGr + Shift + letter. This comination is in fact the same as pressing Alt + Ctrl + Shift + letter (because AltGr produces Alt + Ctrl) and it fires some of 'Browser Help Shortcuts'. For example AltGr + Shift + O should produce a letter O with a dash on it's top but instead it fires 'Show nesting of HTML containers'.
    We tried to turn off sap-wd-lightspeed, but then other key combinations are reserved for u2018Browser Help Shortcutsu2019.
    We need to be able to use AltGr + Shift + a/c/e/s/o/l/z/x/n in runtime.

    The funny thing is that bold font [when message unread in message list] shows OK, ie in greek, but when i click on unread message, it is assumed to have been read, so it changes over to medium [non bold] and the encoding changes as well into the one that is not greek and thus unreadable.  In ~/.sylpheed/sylpheedrc the fonts are:
    widget_font=
    message_font=-microsoft-sylfaenarm-medium-r-normal-*-*-160-*-*-p-*-iso8859-7
    normal_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    bold_font=-monotype-arial-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    small_font=-monotype-arial-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-7
    In /etc/gtk, for gtk1.2 apps the file refering to greek encoding [el] seems to be fine [exactly the same as in slackware 9.1].

  • Non-Latin Characters lead to finder distress.

    One of the nicest features of Macintosh from the time I first played on an SE30 is the capacity to quickly type non-Latin characters. While to many this might not seem like a big deal, for me being able to write Tetris™ without a second thought is a great convenience.
    So I was very surprised when I began typing µ in the Finder under Snow Leopard and didn't end up on a file that started with µ but rather on m. As if that wasn't irritating enough µ is not treated as m so the file becomes completely unreachable by alphabetic selection. This is something I use almost constantly in Finder so having a file unreachable is even worse than merely having the character interpreted incorrectly.
    Just to be certain that this wasn't merely a flaw with that one character I examined other common characters.
    ƒ, é, π, ∑ all suffer from the same problem, misinterpreted when typed and interpreted correctly during the comparison.
    So the question is, “Is this an error in how I set up my machine, an error in the string comparison system, or an error in the Finder program?”

    Yes, I just double checked, and I was in error, accented Latins do work as expected. I am certain that the inclusion of such in the prior list was a user error.
    However the fact that the Greek key layout works begins to suggest the root of the problem.
    Interestingly enough this also applies to the Greek layouts internal option modified keys.
    I am strongly suspecting a bug here.

  • SetMnemonic for non-english characters

    Does anybody knos how to set JButtons mnemonic for non-english characters?
    My mnemonic is loaded from a resource bundle, and in the documentation the setMnemonic(char) is only limited to english and it is written that the user should call setMnemonic(int) instead.
    So what value should this int contains in order to display the non-english char which is loaded from resource bundle?
    Thanks in advanve,

    It seems that this is an issue that has popped up in various forums before, here's one example from last year:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=16&threadID=490722
    This entry has some suggestions for handling mnemonics in resource bundles, and they would take care of translated mnemonics - as long as the translated values are restricted to the values contained in the VK_XXX keycodes.
    And since those values are basically the English (ASCII) character set + a bunch of function keys, it doesn't solve the original problem - how to specify mnemonics that are not part of the English character set. The more I look at this I don't really understand the reason for making setMnemonic (char mnemonic) obsolete and making setMnemonic (int mnemonic) the default. If anything this has made the method more difficult to use.
    I also don't understand the statement in the API about setMnemonic (char mnemonic):
    "This method is only designed to handle character values which fall between 'a' and 'z' or 'A' and 'Z'."
    If the type is "char", why would the character values be restricted to values between 'a' and 'z' or 'A' and 'Z'? I understand the need for the value to be restricted to one keystroke (eliminating the possibility of using ideographic characters), but why make it impossible to use all the Latin-1 and Latin-2 characters, for instance? (and is that in fact the case?) It is established practice on other platforms to be able to use characters such as '', '' and '', for instance.
    And if changes were made, why not enable the simple way of specifying a mnemonic that other platforms have implemented, by adding an '&' in front of the character?
    Sorry if this disintegrated into a rant - didn't mean to... :-) I'm sure there must be good reasons for the changes, would love to understand them.

  • Word Replacements for Non- English Characters

    Hi
    Does anyone have an idea on implementing Word Replacements for non- english characters in TCA- DQM 11i.
    We are trying to identify, capture and cleanse common accented characters like à, â , ê
    However, the default language for replacement is American English , So even if we add these in the existing lists it will not take any effect
    Is creating a new Word replacement list for every language the solution ?? any patch recommendations???
