Problems with permissions on Public folder?

I can see my wife's Public folder and drop box but she can't see mine, although she can log in as a guest. We're both using Leopard. I think it's some kind of permissions problem because in the info for my Public folder there are three users:
me: read & write
unknown: read only (that's the weird one)
everyone: read only
My wife has:
her: read & write
staff: read only
everyone: read only
When I checked the permissions for my Public folder by running ls -ld Public in Terminal I got the following: drwxr-xr-x@ 5 xbodhipaksa xbodhipaksa 170 Jun 13 08:45 Public
I'm not sure what that @ symbol is doing there.
I ran chmod -vv 755 Public in Terminal but that didn't change anything.
Since I know nothing about permissions I've been following the instructions in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7243511&#7243511
Any help gratefully received.

The Public folder isn't visible when she logs in as a guest. I just created an account for her a few minutes ago and gave her read only access to the public folder, but when I logged in remotely using her computer and that new account the public folder still didn't show up.
File sharing is and has been enabled in the system preferences, and her new account is showing up there.

  • [SkyDrive] Files can't be uploaded because there's a problem with a file or folder.

On Windows 8.1 RTM, the SkyDrive metro client shows a message that "Files can't be uploaded because there's a problem with a file or folder." and lists one particular file. When I installed the PC, I have switched then Access all files offline
    option to On.
The file resides in a directory I have deleted from the disk. When attempting to get rid of this "problem" (as there are no hints nor UI available) I have manually checked that the directory does not exists on the disk any more, as well as deleting
the directory from cloud storage using a web browser. However, the message is still there.
Restarting the computer several times nor keeping it idle for a significant amount of time did not help.
How to get rid of that "problem" / how to fix it?

    Hi
Let’s try to redirect the skydrive folder and sync again to see what’s going on:
    1. Open regedit and find following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SkyDrive
    2. Change “UserFolder” to another location.
    3. Open the SkyDrive Metro app to confirm your files and new directory.
    Then check the issue again.

  • Outlook save/update error with Exchange 2013 public folder used as Contact Items

    Hello Everybody.
This problem is driving me crazy.
In Exchange 2013 i have created a public folder with several subfolders used as Contact Items.
I've reviewed all settings several times and all is ok.
Outlook 2010/2013 users several times receive the message:
"The item cannot be saved to this folder. The folder was deleted or moved, or you do not have permission. Do you want to save a copy of it in the default folder for the item?"
when try save an existing contact after modification.
I can assure you that user permissions, server configurations are ok; please, help me.

Did you make the subfolder the correct type, i.e., a contacts-type folder?

  • File permissions in public folder

sharing out the public folder on an imac i am using for a networked file share. I set the folder so that everyone has access to read and write. When some one creates a file the permissons to the file do not allow others to read or write. Any suggestions?

Files added to a "write only" folder are treated specially by AFP - permissions are set to give user, group and other full "read & write" privileges. Changing the permissions of the "Drop Box" so that it is no longer "write only" would prevent the permissions changes from happening.
A sharepoint can be configured so that permissions are inherited for a folder regardless of whether or not it is "write only". I've never used Sharepoints, but if there is an option to set both "ownership" and "permissions" to be inherited from the parent folder, try setting both - AFP is a bit quirky and it doesn't seem to work well unless both are set.
AFP can also be glitchy - it was in "Panther" and I get the feeling it is worse in "Tiger" (there might have been a bug fix in an earlier 10.4.x, but some problems persist), especially with respect to the "inherit" options. When the "inherit" settings are enabled but the change doesn't propagate through subfolders, sometimes restarting the AFP server ("Personal FIle Sharing") makes the problem go away. Other times, the whole computer may need to be restarted.
I think the state of AFP in OS X is a little sad, considering what you could do prior to OS X where you could go in to "Get Info", share any folder and specify who could access the share, through a control panel. Now the official solution for adding your own share point is to purchase OS X Server.

  • Hard drive died - multiple problems with backed up home folder

My friend called me when she started having some problems with her home iMac. After we did went through a myriad of troubleshooting items, I determined that her hard drive was failing and suggested she backup her home folder immediately to another drive. She copied her home folder over to her old Mac and took the iMac into the Apple Store for further diagnostics. Sure enough, her hard drive had failed and they replaced it for her.
She reinstalled Leopard and set it up with a new account. We tried using the Migration Assistant to copy her old home folder back over but because she copied it rather than using Time Machine, Migration Assistant doesn't see it as a viable home folder. I'm very comfortable using the Terminal since I support both Macs and Linux in my department so I logged in as root and copied over her folders to the new account. That generally worked but we now have a ton of permissions problems of which Disk Utility doesn't fix. I'd like to start fresh again from her backed up home folder. So my question is if I can't use Migration Assistant to move over her old home folder, how do you make OS X see her old home folder as a viable account? (I hope this makes sense.)
    Thanks in advance!

    I would suggest the following.
make a new temp admin account and get rid of the new account she made already. log in as the temp user and copy the old home folder from the external to /Users. then go to system preferences->accounts and make a new account with the same short user name as the name of her old home folder. It will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes". this should recreate that user and take care of all permissions issues.

  • Problems with permissions in Acrobat 9.1

I´m having problems with the edition permissions in acrobat 9.1 pro extended.
I´m trying to stamp a FDF with corrects values into a PDF with security and changes allowed to fill in forms.
    the problem is this:
I choose a permission password and a level of changes allowed.
Then save and close. And my aplication to stamp the FDF doesn´t work.
But, if I open again the PDF and MODIFY the "changes allowed" to any level of them, It seems to doesn´t matter any of them while I modify it. Then save and close again... and... Magic! the stamp works.
I´m looking for an reason for this all the day. But I don´t find any explanation. I suppose that acrobat would make some changes each time the rectrictions are modified... but I´m not sure.
Does anybody know why could be happening this or what does acrobat exactly?
Thanks a lot if someone can help me.
and sorry for my bad english ^^

    Hello and thax for responding.
No, that was one of the first things we tried.
My helpful guy in the store went into Terminal and tried to figure out why all the files were tied to Administrator and needed Root password to move or delete.
Even the folder that he created via Terminal (he added a folder just to see what happended) got the + mark after it and was there by not able to move or add files into, without admin password.
I also used the 10.6 startup DVD to go in and try to reset the ACL for my internal SSD drive, but that did not seem to help either.
There is something about these files and disk that is not giving my Macbook permissions to change the info.
Can also maybe be good to know that before the disk crashed, I managed to use time maschine to back it up. I hooked up the disk to my computer, added another backup disk and backed up my Internal MacBook drive together with the (about to) crashing disk. Then I copied the info from this time machine disk on to the New Drive.
What I believe I need is to re-write the permissions on the disk so that not only admin are allowed to change the info but I have no idea how to do that.
Hope this gives you a little more of a clue what´s is going on and that you have an idea how to solve it.
    Thanx

  • Problem with permissions when upgrading to Yosemite...

I have twice tried to upgrade to Yosemite with the same results each time.  Once the installation completes and it goes through the final reboot to start the system, immediately upon start-up, it shows a dialogue box that says something along the lines of, "Yosemite needs to repair your Library." I do authorize it to do a repair, but it seems nothing actually happens.
Yet another problem is also immediately evident at startup, and that is that several of my folders are irrevocably locked..."I don't have permission."  This includes folders in my User Library, a folder on my Desktop which is vital to my work, and the Downloads folder.  If I try to go to the Get Info area to unlock it, in the Permissions area it says "Fetching", to see who has permissions, but it never stops Fetching.  And if I click on the "+" to add a user permission, it hangs and necessitates a hard restart.
Also, when opening Safari, it can't find Safari's keychain or can't access it, and it asks me to reset to default settings.
I'm thinking this all has to do with a bug in the Permissions, but I don't know where the bug is or how to address it.  I have gone back to Mavericks twice now, and I don't see any problems with the permissions on the Downloads file, for instance.  Also, it seems entirely random as to which files are locked and which aren't, which adds to the confusion.
    Any help would be appreciated.

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Problem with Exchange 2010 Public Folders after installing Exchange 2013 in my environment.

I currently have an Exchange 2010 server with all the roles installed.  Before installing Exchange 2013, I was able to launch the Public Folder Management Console but now I get an error.  When I installed Exchange 2013, I got an error saying I
had a instance of Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003, but I didn't have any of these servers left.  There was still something in AD referencing my old server. I went into ADSIedit and deleted an old administrative group.  This deletion caused my access
to my public folders to get messed up.  I followed this article, http://blog.bruteforcetech.com/archives/766, and I was able to gain access back in my outlook client but I still can't see the public folders in OWA.  I also get this error when
trying to access either Default or System Public Folders.  "Cannot complete the operation because there isn't an available public folder database on server 'ExchangeServer'. It was running the command 'get-publicfolder - getchildren -identity '\'
    -server 'ExchangeServer' "
My Public Folder Database exists and is mounted.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Belinda,
Thank you for responding.  Yes you do understand my problem correctly.  One correction is that after deleting this entry in ADSIEdit, we couldn't access public folders at all either in Outlook or OWA.  I followed these steps in the below article:
     http://blog.bruteforcetech.com/archives/766
After following these steps and recreating the entry on FolderHieachies in ADSI edit, I was able to gain access to the public folders again through Outlook, but still can't see them in OWA and can't access them in Public Folder Management Console.

  • Sudden problem with permissions

    Hello
Was working on an Indesign file this morning and when I came to open it again this afternoon I got this message...
    "Cannot open the document...
You may not have permission or the document may be open already"
I have no idea why this has happened, I've not changed anything in the system preferences to do with permissions and the document is definitely not already open.
I've tried quiting and restarting InDesign but that didn't fix anything.
Can anyone help? I really need to open this file again!!!

    Hi John
Started Mac up this morning and the InDesign file opened without any problems. Think it may have been due to network issues, as during the time I was working on the file the IT dept had set up access to a network folder on my Mac, so this is probably the most logical explanation. I've not accessed the network folder this morning and the InDesign file has been ok.
    Thanks!

  • Plenty of problems with permissions

I feel confident this is a bug in Leopard but someone please correct me.
On the left is my other macs which I can connect to first time, however if I try and connect a short while later it will fail, no specific information just 'connection failed' in the finder window.
If I click connect as it will Sometimes allow me to re enter my admin user and password for the other mac and connect again. Force quitting the finder will always allow me to reconnect.
At the moment its doing it very often and worse once in when trying to move files it will say things like I can move the files but I won't be able to view them and if I had sufficient privileges then I could see them. After this the finder will crash.
This does this from any mac to any other mac on my network so is not specific to my macbook.
The crazy thing is even if the connection has failed for the volumes I can always screen share no bother. I wish they would allow you to drag stuff from a screen share to the local computer.
    Any ideas or fixes?

I too am experiencing this problem. We have a small 7 user workgroup of mostly PCs but some Macs and a single linux box on a Tiger server running 10.4.7 (maybe I should upgrade it to 10.4.8 which is supposed to fix some permissions problems).
The problem started on Wednesday when one of our people changed some permissions for a folder and all its contents using the Get Info dialogue. Ever since then we have had permissions problems.
I wrote a file on my PowerBook, emailed it to a colleague, she saved it, now I cannot edit it. Not only that, I cannot login to the server either, despite having Admin privileges. I could login as super user, but haven't done that yet.
The reason he had to change the permissions was because he recently set a folder up as a sharepoint with limited access when it had previously run happily as part of another folder with wider access. He's not a Mac user but prefers Linux so it's possible he made a wrong move. Since Tiger is so hard to administer anyway, I can't immediately see what is wrong.
The permissions in Workgroup Manager appear to be using POSIX settings without inheritance. I guess I'll have to change all the shares to Inherit Permissions. Maybe I'll try the ACL route as suggested here too.
    Any other ideas?

  • Problems with permissions of files written over a share

    Hello,
I have 2 sharepoints, with his permissions working ok...
If I create a file in a client computer 10.4.8 and copy this file to the share, the file assumes the permissions of the share, (Owner=RW, Group=RW) but if I create a file from an application, example, TextEdit or FreeHand, and save it directly over the share, the file doesn´t assumes the permissions of the share, it remains read only for a group, although it must to assume those of the share, read/write for a group. I dont know what happend, and how to fix it.

  • Problem with permissions when copying files over network

This is my setup. Our design studio have several iMacs that the designers use for open projects, when they are finished I copy them over to a G4 which has a SATA raid in it which is used as a file-server for all closed jobs, photos and logos. The file-servers mount point was created using an app called 'Sharepoints'. The iMacs run 10.5.7 the G4 runs 10.4.11.
When I try and copy over a folder full of folders/files for a given project into the given clients folder. I keep getting the error, "the operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for "filename".
If I get info for the given file the owner, group and everyone have read & write access. The client folder on the file-server has the owner, group and everyone having read & write access. I can drag that file by itself over to the file-server and it will copy fine with out the error.
This is doing my head in, the quickest way around the problem is to archive the folder, copy it over and then un-archive it.
Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening and what I should to to fix the problem. Thanks
