Problems with SSID broadcast
Hi,
I have an Cisco Aironet AP1141N en have some problems with the SSID broacasting.
When turn my laptop on i see the SSID en everything works great. (working 6 meters of the AP)
When i turn on the desktop PC with integrated PCI wifi card sometime it finds the SSID sometimes it don't show the SSID.
I have four computers with will working excellent with the Arionet AP en two computers have the problem that the SSID is missing in the connection list of Wireless Windows.
Kan somebody helping to fix this problem?
Thanks,
Hello,
Are the two non-working PCs having the same wireless NIC/supplicant/drivers for example?
Did you already test a driver update, or a different supplicant (meaning the SW to manage the wireless NIC)?
Are these two non-working PCs located in the same area where other PCs can successfully connect?
Regards,
Fede

Survey fail even with SSID broadcast
I fail the initial survey every time I try with the WRE54G. No wireless networks show up - and I get over 20 when I try with other devices. I usually have SSID broadcast disabled, but have enabled it on the WRT54G router when setting up the RE. Any advice? Thanks in advance!
Hi,
Just make sure that the range expander is properly configured and well synchronized with the router , and make sure that the ssid broadcast on the range expander is also enabled. -
How to confirm access secure with SSID broadcast disabled?
I have set up my wireless router with a unique SSID, SSID broadcast disabled, and with WPA enabled. With my PC turned off, the 'WLAN' light remains lit. Is this a 'feature' of the WRT54G wireless router, or is someone else actually using my wireless router?
the WLAN light will be lit as long as you have the wireless function on the router "enabled" . You may have disable the SSID broadcast....however that does not stop the wireless function on the router.

Problem with Datagram Broadcasts
Hi everybody,
I'm having the following problem: I'm implementing a client/server suite that's communicating via UDP broadcasts. This is an absolute requirement since one of the client does not yet have an IP address assigned so it cannot be addressed explicitly (the client/server suite is some kind of DHCP-similar protocol).
Now, my server is running a couple of ServerThreads, which are listening for incoming requests and deal with them. Now, when a request is received, the respective ServerThread starts to process it and broadcasts the answer. Unfortunately, this answer is received by all other ServerThreads running on this machine since the broadcast also addresses the Loopback Interface, so the load rises exponentially.
Any idea how to circumvent this? I did not yet play with the DatagramSocket options such as setBroadcast(), instead I just used this address as broadcast address and sent the messages with a usual socket.send() invocation:
InetAddress broadcastAddress = InetAddress.getByName("255.255.255.255");
Yours, truly
SteffiDon't you have something at the start of your messages that tells you whether they are requests or replies?
If you don't want to do the filtering yourself, then use a different port for the reply. The client could send the reply port number in the request.

Hi,
until yesterday I used a Linksys WAP4400N access point to connect my MacBook via WLAN to my LAN. When SSID broadcasting was enabled, everything worked fine. However, as soon as I disable SSID broadcasting, my MacBook does not find my WLAN anymore. My WLAN is entered in the list of 'known' WLANs.
Yesterday, I bought an Apple Time Capsule and with SSID broadcasting everything works fine, but without SSID broadcasting, my MacBook is not able to connect anymore. It thus seems to be a problem of my MacBook instead of a problem with the access points.
I tested another notebook running Windows XP, and that notebook connects fine (both with and without SSID broadcasting).
Is this problem known to any of you? If so, does anyone of you know how to fix this problem?OK, so it finally happened again. Here are some screenshots:
Hovering over the network icon, I see the factory SSID:
http://www.delorenzo.ca/temp/a.png
Click to open it, it shows two different SSIDs:
http://www.delorenzo.ca/temp/b.png
My network scanner only shows one network, no factory SSID:
http://www.delorenzo.ca/temp/c.png
This condition persists until I disconnect and reconnect the network.
Windows 7 only knows one network (Starbuck). Apple Network is not in my network list. When this is happening, Windows 7 thinks I am connected to a public network and so firewall blocks some of my applications. -
Help! Broadcasting error: port problem with message server
Dear all,
I have a problem with our broadcasting in BW7.
I've checked all the pameters in ICM, that is correct.
I used RSBB_URL_PREFIX_GET to check HTTP server host and port
settings, and also check for message server.
The port of message server is 8101, and for ICM is 8001.
In RZ10, they are set as:
icm/server_port_0 PROT=HTTP,PORT=80$$
ms/server_port_0 PROT=HTTP,PORT=81$$
When I use broadcasting, the port 8101 is taken, and the error message is displayed:
'Page cannot be displayed
If I change the port to 8001 in address, it works.
As the how-to guide for Enabling BW web functionaality after new installation, the port 8101 would be reset to 8001 automatically when executing.
But it doesn't work.
Do you have any idea?
Thanks a lot!
JuanHi,
I have modified PORT=80$$ to 8001, and 81$$ to 8101, but the error occurs always.
Could anyone help?

No SSID Broadcast (or connect) even when SSID broadcast is enabled on my WRT54GL?
I own a WRT54GL, Firmware is 4.30.12 (the latest).
I used to be able to connect with the router just fine, 801.11g, WEP security. Recently wireless connectivity stopped working (wired ports are working just fine, with both internal network and Internet access [external]). I just got around to trying again tonight...
It seems that my notebook computer does not *see* the wireless router. I tried connecting with SSID broadcast off (like I used to)... didn't connect.
I turn on SSID broadcast and even changed my SSID name on the router, and saved the config... but my notebook's "wireless networks" dialog still does not show my router (but it does show 5 of my neighbor's routers).
What would make an SSID not show up on my client "wireless network" dialogs, even though I tell the router to broadcast it?
Has the wireless portion of my WRT54GL simply died? Please don't take this as an arguement, but I don't understand the logic of your troubleshooting steps.
I have no problems with Internet access, and my wired network works perfectly. So there seems no point in expanding the problem to include my broadband modem, right? My problem seems pretty well isolated (for now) to my WRT54GL only, since it is the immediate device that my notebook is unable to connect with (or see).
My firmware is the latest and was updated before I posted (see version # in my original post). I has already recycled the power. I didn't try the reset button... will try that next, but am not very hopeful :-( -
I have an Aironet CB21AG 802.11b client adapter installed in an IBM ThinkPad T22 connecting to a Linksys BEFW11S4 802.11b wireless router. One of the security essentials indicated by Linksys is to disable SSID broadcast after all wireless devices have been configured.
When I do so the link between my laptop and the router is lost. The adapter's user manual indicates that if the SSID is blank on the Available Infrastructure and Ad Hoc Networks page - which it is when SSID broadcast is disabled - you cannot activate the network.
Is there anyway to ensure the Aironet client adapter is able to communicate w/my wireless router with SSID broadcast disabled?Yes, just enter the SSID that your are using on the AP into the wlan config utility you are using on the laptop...
This way your AP will not accept association requests from any wireless client except those who are configured with the correct SSID. -
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN .
HI All,
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN . the WLC are providing the HQ and one of the Branches the Wireless services .
Am using all the available 9 SSIDs at the HQ , and am using only 4 of it at the Brnche.
The problem that i have are happening only at the Branch office as i cant room between the SSIDs within Diferent VLANs but i can do it with the one that pointing to the same VLAN. Once the client ( Laptop/Phone ) connected to one of the SSIDs. it imposiible to have him connected to the other ones with Different VLAN. meanwhile, It says its connected to the other SSID but its not getting IP from that pool.
here is the Show Run-Config from my WLC .. and the Problem happening between the SSID AMOBILE and ASTAFF. i have the Debug while am switching between the SSIDs if needed .

In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

Problem with wpa and hidden ssid
hi,
I have a powerbook g4 (1,67ghz). i am having trouble connecting to a netgear router mr814 v3 if i use wpa and hidden ssid, i get a message, that the router would not support wpa!
there is no problem with wep and hidden ssid or wpa with no hidden ssid.
is also have no problems with wpa and hidden ssid with an ibook.
the problems occur only with the powerbook with os x 10.3.9 as well as 10.4.2. even after the recent airport update, no change.
thanks for the help,
benI would use WPA and broadcast your SSID.
It use to be useful, but closing your Airport or wireless network (sometimes referred to as not broadcasting your SSID) is really no longer a real option when it comes to wireless security.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
WPA is your friend if you value wireless security.
My recommendation is not to worry about broadcasting your SSID but use WPA. This will be more secure than a closed WEP encrypted network. Closing your network makes it very difficult for neighbouring networks to see which channels are free thus causing potential interference problems.
Another thing to consider is that a closed network is still broadcasting and therefore is detectable (regardless of whether it is broadcasting a SSID). If someone was determined to hack into your network, then not broadcasting your SSID and MAC address access control is not going to stop them.
WPA is virtually uncrackable (only really vunerable to a dictionary attack if a real word is used as a password) and therefore will stop the casual user and the determined hacker. -
WRT54G with USB11 v 2.6: Can't automaticaly reconnect after SSID broadcast disabled
Hi All,
I'm trying to make my network more secure. I've done all the basics, including disabling the SSID broadcast. The only problem is that after a few hours, I lose connectivity on the USB 11 wireless adapter and have to directly connect to the router via a cat 5 cable and reset the SSID to broadcast, which causes my network to find it and logs in. I reset the SSID broadcast to disable and get a few more hours of conenctivity until it drops again.
My router is ver 2.0 and my adapter is 2.6. This is the first time in 4 years I've had any probs with my wireless network.
My PC is brand new and pretty mid-high-end. Intel duo-core, 2 GB ram, etc...
Any help would be appreciated.Best thing is to just enable SSID. It's a myth that disablling helps with security, it does for the average joe... a bit. but not really.
I found a great article about how disabling SSID doesn'treally do much for security at all, but i can't seem to laocte ti right now. I was googling wireless security stuff about a month or so ago, guess i should have bookmarked that one. -
How can I disable SSID broadcast with Time Capsule?
I have always disabled the SSID broadcast with other devices. It is a big help with securing the networks. Can this be done with Time Capsule? If yes, please tell me how.
Thanks.I have always disabled the SSID broadcast with other devices. It is a big help with securing the networks. Can this be done with Time Capsule? If yes, please tell me how.
You can by turning on hidden network.
Open the airport utility .. click on your TC, and then edit.. go to the wireless TAB. Click on wireless options. Click Create hidden network.
Let me add in modern world.. it is totally useless. A person can see your hidden network using any standard wireless analysis software. It adds no security at all.. and WPA2 Personal with a decent password 10-20 characters mix of upper and lower case plus numbers is still solid.. add more characters if you are paranoid.. but honestly hiding SSID does nothing.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/28653/debunking-myths-is-hiding-your-wireless-ssi d-really-more-secure/
If you did not know it is not part of the IEEE wireless standard.. it therefore often leads to problems with clients.
There are many other reasons given in the article above.. -
SSID Broadcast in WLC4402 and connecting problem.
When there are multiple wlans in the preferred networks list and I disable SSID broadcast, Windows XP client would not connect to network even if it`s first in the preferred network list. If I enable broadcast, connecting to network works just fine. Have anyone solved this problem?
Typically I see that issue with only some wireless cards. Turning off SSID broadcast doesn't really gain you much in the way of securing your network. There is freeware that can find the SSID of your network with the broadcast off.

Problem with broadcasting with 123-2.JA2
Since I did an upgrade from 122-13.JA4 to 123-2.JA2
we have problems with locally generated udp broadcast in the wl-environment. The clients associate without any problems with leap and has absolutely no problems with unicast traffic. But locally broadcast from one wl-client to the other seems have problems. We use vlans. Downgrade to 122-13.JA4 and all problems are gone. Does anyone share same problems with this release?
any input is very welcome
OliverYes, lots of our clients couldn't even get trhough the dhcp process. downgraded to 12.2(15)XR2 with success.
