Process does I/O, shows up on Disk Activity within Resource Monitor as System process

I've written some software that performs a significant amount of file I/O. What is odd is that on Resource Monitor, I see the large amount of I/O being read/written to the files my process is writing --- except the process that is indicated under
Disk Activity is the System process, not my process. My code is standard C++ (no direct calls to the Windows API), console mode. Can anyone explain why this occurs? Is this some artifact of console mode programs that I am stuck with? Thanks.

Hi all, am intending to do some editing on me and my gf's pictures, and I need to assure her that it's not going to go onto the internet (she's extremely private).
You could do whatever you need to do in Lightroom with the Internet unplugged, then your questions are moot

  • Why does my mac show in Startup Disk section of System Preferences that I have OS X Lion Server?

I have bought my Macbook pro half a year ago and I have recently installed Windows 7 on it in addition to OS X Lion. The problem is that Startup Disk in System Preferences shows that I have a Server version, while I don't. How can it be possible? And is it possible to fix it?

You should post that on the Boot Camp  forum, that is where all the Boot Camp and Windows guys hang out.

I have to use task manager to close itunes.exe *32 process.  Then I have to reboot my machine (Dell XPS 650/Windowa 7 x64).  Itunes will sucessfully open.  I synced my Ipad 2 and 2 ipods.  Used exit to leave itunes desktop 10.5.3 - but the process does not close.  Closing it with task manager so an itunes.exe process is not running.  Try to execute itunes desktop in regular and safe modes result in "iTunes not responding."  Reboot the machine and I get one use of itunes desktop before the whole mess starts over.  At least I have a way to sync my devices.  But this has been happening ever since the release that introduced the cloud.  Someone needs to channel Steve J and get these guys back on the ball.

  • Blue Fibre Lights Pegged Until Disk Activity .....

    setup:
    G5 Xserve 10.3.9
    Xserve RAID, 7mods. - 4mods. [arrays]
The 7 module RAID 5 array fibre/disk activity lights in the center of the RAID (front) are continually spiking and causing massive network slow downs! I have updated the Firmware for Both the Xserve and RAID and it just won't stop. This has happened before and a reboot of the RAID itself has fixed it. I have rebooted both the Xserve and RAID at least twice now. I am sure that the updates are current as well as I have just finished doing them....
I am thinking that a module has snapped, died, or is playing dead, but the RAID Admin is showing me nothing bad....
Anyone Out There That Can Give Swift Help???????

This can happen in a protected RAID set (i.e. RAID 5) if a single raid member drive pops offline and back on again, since the RAID set has to re-build itself from the parity data in that case.
It also happens after creating a RAID 5 volume, as the creation usually takes a few days (assuming you used the 'RAID Now' option), and so you'll see the blue lights.
It also makes sense that the blue light 'spiking' would drop when you do a read/write, as the initialization process has to pause to handle the disk activity.
Are either of these the case?
We are having some issues with an Xserve RAID
connected to a G5 Xserve running 10.4.8 Server. The
Fibre Channel lights on the front are constantly
maxed out, but whenever the disk are active the
lights die down only to peg again when activity
stops. Needless to say, we are having SEVERE access
    speed issues. Any ideas?

  • Excessive disk activity with Safari 3.2.1

Since updating to Safari 3.2.1 on os 10.4.11, my hard disk begins a lengthy bout of intense disk activity within a minute or two of opening Safari. It just keeps chunking away, and it only stops when I quit the browser. This happens whether or not I load any pages.
Looking at Activity Monitor when this is happening, it is clearly Safari that is causing the excessive disk activity. And during these periods, Safari is using 15% to 30% CPU.

    I see the same thing:
    http://img.skitch.com/20090212-pbe1s4wprd6rjmjiq3sfe1s961.jpg
It just plugs away, using 33% of CPU. Very small network usage.
What is it doing? As for 'resetting' it, what do you mean? Just quit and restart Safari? OK, but this happens consistently.
    Any thoughts?

suppose my program sends request to calc.exe to perform a sum and it returns the result,,,,It's possible, if the program provides an API and is designed to do that kind of things. As for getting calculator.exe to do your calculations. No way José.
As far as I know it neither provides an API or was designed to do calculations for external programs.

  • How come my external hard drive is no longer visible in finder even after ticking it in preferences? it shows in the disk utilities but does not allow me to find a problem or fix the problem? Please help.

it shows in the disk utilities but does not allow me to find a problem or fix the problem? Please help. also my external hard drive is a seagate free agent go, 500GB. it is visible on my tv but has no files in it… i'm scared i've lost everything?

Honestly i cannot remember sorry, i got it like 5 maybe 6 yrs ago and just started downloading things to it as the memory on the computer started filling up and when i wanted to see photos/videos on my TV.
My wife did tell me after i had written this post that she did try and record TV to it as it was plugged in. I think by doing so somehow has deleted everything.   It reads on my TV yet has no files in it but won't show up on my computer. hope this helps.
Starting to think it is going to cost more to retrieve files on it than it will be to buy a newer and larger one.

I created a scenario IDOC to Flat File using Integration Process and one without IntegrationProcess. I am able to execute the one without Integration Process easily.
However when I send the IDOC from SAP then the Integration Process scenario just does not work.
I Checked SXMB_MONI  There is no entry for the Integration Process.I can see entry for other without Integration Process.
SXI_CACHE : I can see my Integration Process active
SWEQADM :  I have activated the Event Queue and Background job
SWF_XI_ADM_BPE :  ALL BPE is showing green status.
All syntax check on IP are fine.
There is no Basis Help for me so  there could be some additional basis steps which need to be configured.  Has anyone faced such an issue with Integration Process?
    Regards
    Prashanta

Hope this might help you. when u configure an IDoc as Sender with BPM this is how you proceed.
<b>1<b>. let us split the scenario into two</b>.</b>
    a. <b>Sender to BPM</b> ( Integration Process).
    b. <b>BPM to Receiver</b>.
<b>2. First let us configure the first Sender to BPM.</b>
    a. Sender Agreement( <b>Not required</b> ).
    b. Receiver Agreement( <b>NOT Required</b>).
    c. Receiver Determination( Sender Service, Outbound Interface, Receiver Service(<b>Integration Process</b>).
    d. Interface Determination( Inbound Interface(Sender Abstract Interface), Message Mapping(NOT Required if your using transformation stepin Integration Process)).
<b>3. Now let us configure the Second BPM to Receiver.</b>
    a. Sender Agreement( <b>NOT Required</b>)
    b. Receiver Agreement( Sender Service(<b>Integration process</b>), Receiver Abstarct Interface,Receiver service, Inbound Interface).
    c. Receiver Determination( Sender Service(Integration Process), Receiver Abstarct Interface,Receiver Service).
    d. Interface Determination( Inbound Interface, Message Mapping(<b>NOT Required</b>)).
    So Finally we have <b>One Receiver Agreement</b>, <b>Two Receiver Determinations</b>, <b>Two Interface Determinations</b>.

From the oracle side you can obtain OS process id for sessions having some waits for user I/O

  • WD 320GB in my macbook does not show reliably in Disk Utility

    Hi
I have bought a Western Digital 320GB Scorpio for my C2D MacBook but it does not seem to work as an internal disk in the macbook, when unformatted it does show up (but not every time) but when formated as MacOS Journaled it never shows up in Disk Utility, I've tried using the leopard installer as well as booting from my original 80GB disk plugged into an enclosure. Once the disk is formatted disk utility is very slow at showing the other disks compared to the mere seconds it usually takes. I've tested this disk in a PC and it seemed to work fine formated as NTFS, successfully copied and read some files from it.
What could be wrong with this disk or my macbook?

After unsuccessfully trying two Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" SATA drives (320GB SATA II and 250GB SATA I) in the MacBoook, I have resorted to buying a Seagate Momentus 250GB drive which works perfectly.
I suspect an incompatibility between the Merom-based Core2Duo MacBooks and the WD Scorpio drives. So if you have an early Macbook, I'd steer clear of WD drives.

  • Portable Hard Drive will not show up in Disk Utility

I purchased a Toshiba Canvio Slim 500 GB hard drive a few months ago before I updated my computer to Mac OSX Version 10.6.8. I was running out of Hard Drive Space since I bought my computer in 2009 and decided to use a portable hard drive to store some of my personal information. I was able to read and successfully transfer data to the hard drive, but then I updated my computer to 10.6.8 and now I can't access it at all. It won't even show up in Disk Utility. I read on a few forums that some people were having the same problem as I was and they bought a y-cable adapter to power the hard drive through two usb cables. I bought one and tried it out and I'm still not having any luck. I tried using my girlfriend's computer to see if I can access it from her computer and it shows up in disk utility, but I can't access it. The lights turn on and I can hear it working like it worked the first day I used it, but nothing is happening. Please help me fix the problem.

Evidence, as scant as it is from Disk Utility, suggests the Toshiba external
HDD is indeed without Partion Map Scheme, has no files on it, unformatted.
So I wonder if there isn't a wire or defective circuit inside the box (enclosure)
that may be hiding access to the actual HDD unit inside there. Those kinds
of enclosures generally use a laptop 2.5" HDD since they can run on USB
power from the port. Matching up the internal HDD from that case, with an
other one with correct life support (connections) is a way to test it.
However if the Toshiba HD is a 3.5" standard drive, a larger enclosure, or
an adapter that simply plugs into the connections of the bare hard drive,
would be a way to access that external drive. These 'drive adapters' can
work with both SATA and IDE hard drives; or just one of the two. They
run in the range of $40 or so, and essentially are a wire kit with a power
adapter to spin the drive, but some do not even have the adapter, so as
to still use USB power for smaller drives of slower disc RPM speed.
Most competent computer stores with a skilled staff would know of these.
However some of the smaller HDD enclosures may be hard to open up.
And if there were a Toshiba warranty, this action could void the same.
Adapters would be to 'test the idea of recovering any data,' if enclosure
the drive shipped in has somehow developed a defect. Though it may
be if there is a defect, it may have existed at a point in time to affect
the actual save-to-disk process. Or later. A wire could be not allowing
information to be received, if broken or circuit damages, by the Mac.
But by the look of the Disk Utility's partition map, along with the other
earlier image that shows the same info in the bottom of the image of
the status, in Disk Description, this does not bode well for recovery.
I'm not sure what else to suggest. When the dust settles, Toshiba may
have a residual warranty that could only replace that one with another.
Some older mailorder catalogs show these kinds of adapters, some use
USB port power, others also include an AC adapter so standard faster
HDDs can be used without an enclosure. This also helps if one wants
temporary access to a hard disk drive, but does not want to install it.
•USB drive cable adapter kit SATA and IDE HDD - google results:
    https://www.google.com/#q=USB+drive+cable+adapter+kit+SATA+and+IDE+HDD
Companies also make hot-swap docks to allow fast swapping of HDDs
of either or both 2.5" and 3.5" size, these have their own adapter and
one simply puts drives inside from the top, like a bread toaster.
Hopefully you can take the Toshiba along to a computer store and ask
a somewhat skilled person there about getting the cable adapter kit or
another enclosure. The cable adapter would cost less & be quicker, yet
that would still involve opening up the failed HDD's enclosure for access.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • System process constantly writing to disk

While dealing with another hard drive Problem, ive noticed in Ressource Monitor, that the process 'System' is constantly writing to my main drive.
Sometimes its about 100-200 KiB/sec, today ive watched it for a while, and its writing action was 1.5 MiB/sec for quite a while! Later on it was about 300-400 KiB/sec.
Why does this process write so much data to my disk? Considering Windows running times, this adds up to multiple times the size of my hard drive.
Anyone knows whats going on here?

I have a similar, though less severe issue that hopefully someone can help me with.  The System process (pid 4) on my dual core Vaio laptop is writing to disk appx. once every 500ms.  This is not performance impacting and I considered it just a
minor annoyance until I recently installed a SSD.  Since SSD lifetimes are limited by write/erase cycles, I'm concerned these writes are deteriorating my SSD; not good since they're expensive and I LOVE the performance; boots in appx. 15s, instant IE,
    etc.
As with the original poster here, the same activity persists in safe mode.  Per SSD optimization guidelines I've read elsewhere, I've disabled all fetching (super, pre, etc.), indexing and all logging except Application, Security & System but the
    writes persist.
Im using the latest (very recent) driver from Intel (Intel 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller 10.8.0.1003 10/17/2011).  I've tried other drivers and while the write pattern seems to change (drive activity light no longer blinks), Resource Monitor
shows they're still there.  They also cause an additional issue of consuming CPU (?) which doesn't occur with the "recommended" driver I just mentioned.
Anyone know what these writes may be and if/how I can/should stop them?  Thanks.
(BTW, love the caffiene->code quote :-)

  • I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out.

I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out. I am trying to determine what is wrong with the drive.
I need the data on the drive and it won't show up in Disk Warrior. I have tried different Mac's and different USB cords only to find the same outcome. When selected in Disk Utility the information read as such...
Disk Description : WD Elements 1023 Media                      Total Capacity : 500.11 GB (500,105,740,288 Bytes)
Connection Bus : USB                                                               Write Status : Read/Write
Connection Type : External                                                     S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
USB Serial Number : 575837314135304D36373132        Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
As the drive shows in Disk Utility there must be some life left in it surely. There is a possibilty that the physical connection between the USB cord and the external drive is damaged but since the drive shows up I believe it's unlikely... before I give it to the pro's is there anything else I can do to diagnose the issue?

    Hello,
I have just experienced the same thing!
Although my external drive shows in Disk Utility, it does not show in Finder.
And the Verify/Repair buttons are also greyed out.
Also, although the drive is 2TB. DU shows it as having Total Capacity of only 4.14GB! (Which should be the Free Space).
I was wondering if you solved your problem, & if so, would you share your solution.
I´m afraid to Erase in case I lose all my Data on the drive.
Thanks in advance for your reply!
