Profit/Cost center best practice

Hi,
I'm looking for some best practice document on how to setup properly profit/cost centers for a manufacturing company. I'm thinking at a very simple manufacturing company which purchases some raw materials and manufactures and sells some finished goods.
Any advice on that?
Thanks!
Fabio

  • Mass change of profit/cost center groups

we have a requirement to mass change the descriptions for profit/cost center groups. We tried out folowing options but they are not working.
    1. BDC recording for KCH2/KSH2.KCH5N - i think these are not supported in BDC.
    2. LSMW using available BAPI... it can be used only if the group is not assigned in the hierarchy.
Please let me know if there is any other way of handling this.

  • Structure of Profit & Cost center

    Hi All,
I am at the phase of defining the Organization structure of Company.
And I am facing the problem in defining the Cost center and profit center for that. Hope any one can help me in that.
    Scenario is like
    1. I have 5 Raw Material.
2.By  processing  all that I  get  15 type of Finish product.
3.Four product are produce from same work center just by changing the drums(which change the nature of product)    of  machine. Rest of the finish products are produce in different machine(Work Center)
    4. Client are  selling all that finish product .
5.In many cases there client want 7finish product to be clubbed  together and sell it to him. In that case we have to do some activity on that and make according to their requirement.
6.This is and ongoing permutation and combination and any 2  or 3 or 4 (which Is in point number2 )become 1 finish product , this combination create total of 40 final product.
7.And in some case they are also selling raw material also (of point number 1 ).
So in that case we have to create all that material as Finish Product and semi finish product and have to create  sales view of each and every material.
And  they have 7 plant across the country and do same activity.
Client requirement is  that they want to identify the cost of each product .
Till now I have thought of defining the plant as segment.
Now how should I proceed with cost center and profit center for all that product.
Please help me in solving this.
    Regards,
    Shayam

    Thanks for reply
Please correct me if I am wrong.
I am planning to created profit center for each material. As client want to determine cost and profit of each material.
But what  I do in case of  work center where we can only assign only one cost center. And we can have one profit center in cost center master data. And in my case from one work center we produce different finish product and I am treating each material as profit center. So if any coast incurred in that work center it will go in one cost center and accordingly to one profit centeru2026 so in that case what about other finish product produce from that work center as cost will flow to profit center which assigned  to that cost center.
And what about raw material which I use in production of other good and also sell , so what profit cent will I put in that material master, will it me same of raw material or of finish the material produce from that material.
Please tell me the best way to structure the profit center and cost center in this case.
For understanding my senerio you can think of any automobile industry where each parts are manufacture and are sold separately and in combined with others. So in that case how will I assign cost center and profit center . in simple word who I structure my cost and profit center.
    thanks

    Hello Mayur,
    Please try with KP97/KP98 transactions.
I suspect, that you are giving wrong target plan version.
Please check your entries once again.

  • Document change/display - Profit Center / Cost center name

    Hi,
We have a requirement where client wants to display the profit center and cost center names (short or long) when displaying or changing a parked or a posted document. As we all know SAP shows only the profit center and cost center code and not the description during the document display. After all the deliberations, this seems to be an important piece of information while posting a parked document or even viewing it as a posted document.
    What are our options?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Subodh

    Thanks for your response Tamim.
Profit center / cost center naming is following a different convention and we are in a roll out phase, therefore we can't think of first item.
About match code, the requirement is not so much during the posting but primarily while releasing the parked document or viewing the parked / posted document - they want to see the description along side profit / cost center.
I was looking for clues on any utilities / enhancements / BTE that I may use to bring extra fields during document display.

  • Best practice for reclassifying Cost Center/Element

    Dear experts,
Currently the company I'm working for are using SA document (FB50) if there are mistakes when posting cost to Cost Center, they will DR New Cost Center and CR Old Cost Center.
However, it is seem a bit difficult to trace the changes later on. Hence, I would like to ask for opinions on what is the best practice for reclassifying cost center or cost element.
Right now, I'm planning to propose of using KB11N to reclassify cost center. Is this a good practice and easy to trace the cost movement? Is there any different with normal journal adjustment via FB50 and KB11N?
    Need some advices from experts.

    Hi:
Both options are viable. If you reverse posting in FB50 then FI GL account postings will also be reversed and along with cost center postings. Hence here advantage is that cost center reversal will be with referenced to the original document with which wrong posting were made. Disadvantage here is that you will to post the entry again in FB50 . In KB11N you will simply transfer cost center amount from wrong to new one that should be in place of it but here you will have no reference . I personally think reversing posting through FB50 is viable options , reverse postings can be seen in KSB1 as well against that cost center.

  • Best practice for HR while cost center is blocked

    Hi Experts,
    Back ground
Cost center is blocked because the legal entity is demerged.
Some of the employees of the outgoing company are retained in existing legal entity.
Their current cost centers are of the existing entity.
All the historical costcenters of the outgoing entity are blocked.
    Situation
While there is a retro payment the system is rejecting as the old cost centers are blocked.
    Workarounds used
Open the cost center for posting and then manually transfer the amount into desired cost center and then re-close the Costcenter.
    SAP Suggestion
Use substitute cost center so that all costs are colloected their and do the manual transfer of cost to desired ones.
Could not use the same as business has to do the same manual activity.
    Solution
Taken access key into the posting driver to change the cost center to current while there is an occurence of blocked cost center.
    Requirement
Want to use the standard posting driver by removing all customization in upgrade.
    Now the Qtn is
What is the best business process followed by FI and HR guys in organization to handle such scenarios?

Old question, but I have the same problem at this moment.
We also are looking into 2 solutions:
    1. use the substitution costcenters
    2. Create a custom function in our payroll scheme and modify the costcenter during payroll-run. Normally the costcenter will eb saved in the clusters and will be read from the clusters in the fico-run.
Anybody some good advice for this?

  • Best Practice on Moving Standard Hierarchy (Cost /Profit)  into production

    Hi,
What is the best practice to move standard hierarchy into production? Is it better to move it as a transport? Or is it better to upload into production with LSMW?
    Thanks,
    Santoshi

    Hi,
Best practices applied to all developments whether it is R/3, BI modelling or Reporting and as per the best practice we do development in Development system, testing in testing box and finally deploy successful development to production. yes for user analysis purpose, user can do adhoc analysis or in some scenario they create user specific custom queries (sometimes reffere as X-query created by super user).
So it is always to do all yr developement in Development Box and then transport to Production after successful QA testing.

  • G/L Account, Cost Center, Profit Center closing downstream issue

    Hello,
We have issue and I hope most of you must be having this, kind of organization we are every year we need to close down some G/L or Profit Center or Cost Center, however there can be 1000's of reason where you need to reverse document  but problem is Object like G/L, Profit center or cost center are already closed and hence reversal gets error out.
Do anyone have any thoughts how to handle this more better.
    Thanks
    parth

    Hi Parth
    1. Either you need to unblock the master data temporarily
    2. As a Best Practice, if you intend to discontinue a master from 01.01.2014 onwards, have it open till say, 30.06.2014 or any date as agreed by all.. So that, reversals wont be affected

  • Overiding Cost Center to Profit Center

    Dear all,
I know this is not related to MDM, but i would appreciate if i can get an reply.
Is it possible to override an existing Cost Center to a Profit Center? Is there any tool that can do it?
What will be the impact if it is done so.
    Best Regards,
    Sathya

    Hello Ravi
Information from FI or nay other module depends on the assignment of cost object in the original document.
Normally, it is the CC which is assigned to PC.

  • Dummy cost center, Dummy profit center

    Hi everybody,
anyone tell me, why is necessary to use dummy cost center and profit center ? what does dummy cost center, profit center mean?
I don't clear about dummy cost center and profit center
    Thank in advance
    Minhtb
Edited by: Tran Binh Minh on Sep 5, 2008 10:38 AM

    Hi Tran,
    Dummy Profit Center
In SAP, we need to create a dummy profit center when you activate profit center. It is mandatory. This dummy profit center gets values when the system could not find regular profit center in its attempt. We need to configure the system such a way, there is no posting into dummy profit center. Or otherwise, by mistake, if it gets posting, the same have to be post PCA documents to clear them. Then only we get balanced Profit Center wise statement of income or balance sheet.
    Dummy Cost Center
There is no such term in SAP and there is no need to use any of the cost center as dummy cost center. Only very few companies use some cost center for making accounting adjustments and shall not be allocated to other cost objects including products, I think that it is better that we need not such term in our consulting and practice of Controlling.
    Trust this answers your query!

  • Responsible Cost Center and Profit Center in a Maintenance Order

    Dears,
I would like to know what's the real influence that responsible cost center and profit center located in the
"add. data" tab in maintenance order has when I confirm a labor (through the IW41) and settlement an maintenance order.
    Best Regards,
    D. Quint.

    D Quintal,
When you perform a confirmation (IW41) the cost centre assigned to the work centre is credited, and the order debited.
This work centre cost centre may be the same cost centre as the responsible cost centre in the order...

  • Cost center and profit center hierarchy

Hi guys: We have a situation where a cost center is a truck that moves from city 1 to city 2 to city 3...the clients whats to track the costs by city (which is another cost center group)... But if i change the hierarchy in the cost center from city 1 to city 2, the cost center doesnt save the change. how can i only make the cost show up in city 2? what is best design for something like this?
also what about profit centers? What if a profit center is a truck,  and that truck captures revenue and costs, but when it moves from city 1 to city 2, i dont want the history to carry over to city 2...how can i show the postings in city 2 for the new period? whats the best design?
i know everyone has implemented in several different ways, but any design ideas will be very helpful
    thank you
    Brian

    Hello Brian
Costing based profitability analysis is better than account based. Since you are using costing based profitability analysis, you have more flexibility. Among other things you need to define PA transfer structure (Tcode KEI1), assessment cycles etc. Since it is vast area and also one need to have full information about your situation, it is not possible to list "to do" things here. Alternatively what I can suggest is to go through the excellent stuff available at
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/7a/4c48c64a0111d1894c0000e829fbbd/frameset.htm
About internal orders: you need to create an internal order for this purpose, which will take precedence to cost centre during posting.
    Hope this helps!
