Programmatically identify and select DAQ device

Hi all,
I'm using Labview 8.0 to control a system which contains a USB DAQ device (9215A BNC for info). I can control everthing fine and use the DAQ card, but the software I'm writing will ultimately be supplied (as an executable or the like) with the system for use on end user computers. Its possible that some of the end users may already have NI DAQ cards installed in their systems. How can I make sure my software addresses only the DAQ card inside my system? Is there a simple way of programmatically listing all of the devices attached to the computer and then identifying the one that I want?
If I name the device in NI MAX, for example, if I then plug it into a different computer, does it maintain that name? Or is that a local thing only?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Paul

Hi,
thanks for the second reply. What I basically wanted was some way of finding the "device name" of the DAQ device in my system when its connected to a computer with multiple other DAQ devices attached. Ultimately, I did something similar to what you sent in that second example (see attached) which scans through the serial numbers of the DAQ devices attached to the computer and compares them with the serial number (entered manually) of my device. It then returns the device name that matches, so I can pass that to whatever future daq commands need it!
Thanks again for the help
Regards
Paul

    My laptop restarted last night and started displaying the "Reboot and select proper device" message. It goes straight from the Toshiba logo screen to this message. I have tried e of the online fixes I've found. F1, F2, F12 and Delete do nothing to get me to the BIOS setup. How can I get to this menu on this model of computer?   Thank you.

     nothing to get me to the BIOS setup. How can I get to this menu on this model of computer?
    - if your computer is on fast boot then you need to HOLD F2 BEFORE you turn on the laptop. Or always make sure that your laptop is completely off. It means that when you shut it down be sure that you hold SHIFT + SHUTDOWN.
    - you can also get to bios by doing the ff: (ON WINDOWS)
    WIN + C
    SETTINGS
    Change PC Settings
    if  its WIN8, then go to GENERAL then advance start up
    WIN 8.1 > Change PC Settings > Update and Recovery > Recovery > Advanced Start up
    - if laptop is not going to windows then you cant do the above option but what you can do is to remove the battery unplug ac adapter if you're using it then hold power button for 20secs. then put back everything in. AND BEFORE  YOU TURN IT ON,
    hold F2 while you are turning on laptop. this should bring you to BIOS.

    I am wanting to reformat my HP mini laptop with windows 7 but this select proper device message is not allowing me to. I have the operating system disk but my laptop is not recognizing the hard drive. I go to diagnostics in the bios setup and it indicates the primary hard disk is not supported. • Using a menu ring to select DAQ device channel and indicator

    Hi,
    New user here. I am using the DAQ assistant with multiple analog inputs. I would like the front panel to have a menu ring where the user can select which channels are to be active. Also, this corresponds to a single graphical indicator.
    Currently I have a VI that displays all channels each with its own indicator. I want to simplify the front panel so that a user can simply use a menu ring to select and focus on what he/she is interested in. Is it possible to use the Select Signals Express VI to implement this?
    Thank you!

    Drop the DAQ Assistant or convert it to regular DAQmx functions. The physical channel control does all that. Just look at the shipping examples.

  • Can WCS identify and track Bluetooth devices?

    I realize the WCS can track rogue AP's, clients, RFID tags, etc... but waht about Bluetooth devices? Don't see anything documented about this.

    I believe that if it could, it would only show up as a roving noise/interference source.
    Bluetooth uses all / most of the same spectrum as 802.11b/g .... except it uses it by hopping across it, not staying on a single "channel" as the 802.11b/g clients do.
    So, to a bandwidth monitor, it would appear as a full-spectrum noise, which (if mobile) would travel across the monitored zone.
    It may be able to pinpoint the source through triangulation .... I'm not sure and haven't had much playtime on the WCS.
    Good Luck

  • JDev 11g ADF Tree question on programmatically expand and select node

    I have two questions:
    1. I'm trying to automatically expand the first level tree nodes upon display of the tree. I tried to initialize a RowKeySetImpl object, and added ArrayList of first level nodes, and used setDisclosedRowKeys method. The tree nodes are not rendered properly. If I take the following code out, then the tree content is rendered properly. Here is my code. I have three nodes that I want to expand.
    ArrayList node1 = new ArrayList();
    node1.add(new Integer(0));
    ArrayList node2 = new ArrayList();
    node2.add(new Integer(1));
    ArrayList node3 = new ArrayList();
    node3.add(new Integer(2));
    RowKeySetImpl expand = new RowKeySetImpl();
    expand.add(node1);
    expand.add(node2);
    expand.add(node3);
    this.mainTree.setDisclosedRowKeys(expand);
    2. I have a Panel Splitter, on the first facet, it contains a tree, on the second facet it will be either 'task list', or 'edit task'. When user selects a task in the 'task list', I would like to display 'edit task', while highlight the selected 'task' node on the tree.
    In respond to the ActionListener of the command link (each command link corresponds to task):
    1. How do I determine the properly node in the tree?
    2. I constructed a RowKeySetImpl object and called setSelectedRowKeys. But I get messagebox saying "To display the webpage again, Internet Explorer needs to resend the information you've previously submitted." If I clicked Retry button, the message box just gets displayed again. If I cancel, the node I hardcoded does get selected properly.
    Please help me!
    Thanks,

    I believe this has already been fixed in our main code branch. I will enter a boxer bug and make sure that the fix gets backported to boxer so that it is available in the next boxer patch. If I remember correctly, the issue had to do with trees with a large display area (with default fetchSize of 25). The issue is that the tree has to make multiple round trips to the server in order fill the visible area (view port) on the page.
    Do either of the following workarounds work:
    1) Set a fetchSize attribute on the af:tree tag larger than 25 (<af:tree fetchSize="75">). You may want to increase the rangeSize in your pageDef file as well so that the model rangeSize matches the view fetchSize.
    2) Shrink the size of the tree on the page so that it does not have to make multiple round trips to the server to fill it's view port.

  • "Reboot and select a proper boot device..." error on a p6214y

    i have this problem where my computer boots and hangs at the HP blue screen mostly ... sometimes it wont and then go through to the "Reboot and select a proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key" message....
    and sometimes if i leave the computer alone for weeks... it will boot into windows. and immediately go into slow response. then the process repeats from atop...
    but then i connect my hard drive to another CPU, and it logs in fine ... so i know its not the HD...
    i have taken out the battery, checked the cables .... is there something we dont know about this issue???

    The Boot tab of the BIOS Setup shows the following typical items on the screen. (Your system might be different and not include all items):
    Figure 8: Example of a Boot screen
    Boot-time Diagnostic screen
    Boot Device Priority (The order for the boot process. For example, removable devices, DVD optical drive, and hard disk drive).
    I would recommend turning on the computer and immediately tapping F10. When Bios pulls up use your arrow keys to move right until you highlight the BOOT tab. Press enter. Scroll down and select boot device priority by pressing enter. Make sure the HDD is listed as the first boot device. Hope this helps!

  • Programatically delete a DAQ device

    I have created a system with hardware (a USB DAQ) and software that is to be installed on multiple computers overseas. I want to make the set-up as easy as possible because I don't think the people doing the setup will be very well trained, and I won't be there to fix any problems.  I have created an installer that includes all the hardware as well as software setup, but there is one issue left, and I'm not sure what the best way to solve it.  If the installer is run before the DAQ is connected, then the installer creates a virtual device. If the DAQ is then connected, it is named Dev1, which doesn't work with any of my tasks, of course. I have some code that runs, and verifies the hardware set-up each time the system is started, so I can see if the device with the proper name is virtual, and if so, I can rename the actual and virtual DAQ device to the right names, so my tasks operate properly. However, I now have a virtual device hanging out on my system doing nothing, which I would like to avoid, because there is an outside chance that I will end up on the phone trying to explain to people how to straighten out a system when it goes bad, and I want to keep it as simple as possible.  I have two questions:
    Is there some way to delete the virtual device programatically?
    Is there some better approach to accomplish what I am trying to do? I thought about not allowing the installer to proceed if there is no DAQ device plugged in, but I don't know if that is possible.

    I would tend to agree with John_P1's quote below:
    John_P1 wrote:
    I honestly just build up my tasks programmatically.... You can do just about anything that you could do in MAX programmatically via the System Configuration API.
     And I would tend to shy away from:
    Jo-Jo wrote:
    ...I just find [that using MAX] really speed development, and help with maintanence because you can test out all of your tasks in MAX outside of any LabVIEW code. And debug and toubleshoot hardware without using any of your own software, so you know any problems are not software bugs.
     once going into production. MAX tends to be a good tool for getting your feet wet after unboxing the hardware, but something you gradually migrate away from after the prototyping phase -- yet occasionally return to, as you mention, if you need to back up to square one for new prototyping or as a sanity check.
    It's possible to deploy NCE hardware behavior configurations, but not necessarily desirable. For the same reason it's possible to deploy any arbitrary configuration (INI, XML, ....), yet it's likely more desirable to build this configuration programmatically -- perhaps persisting it to disk if it's a user-modify-able configuration, or if it's desirable to persist user settings between subsequent deployments -- else it might be most desirable to keep the "configuration" hard-coded as essential business logic (as DAQ tasks might tend to be).
    Though, it sounds like you have a solution, and that's far more valuable than more work! Keep a tally on whether the current deployment strategy keeps you and your end users happy, and if so, keep it! Else, consider John_P1's advice, which is more likely to scale with your application if things get hairy.

  • Without NI DAQ device- how to get data from MSP into labVIEW and process it

    Hi,
    I do not have an NI DAQ device. I have an MSP430 and my sensor is an ADXL335 Accelerometer. How do I get data from my MSP into labVIEW and process it?
    Just looking for a nudge in the right direction. I'm having a hard time finding resources on labVIEW that don't involve NI specific DAQs.
    Thanks in advance,
    Aziz

    There are many ways to get data into LabVIEW that do not involve NI-DAQ devices.
    I think your easiest option would be to stream it via serial port if the data rate isn't too fast.

  • Error Message: Reboot and Select proper Boot device.

    My HP desktop computer (model p6654y) will not boot directly into Windows.
    I can ALWAYS make it boot into Windows by first pressing the F10 key to enter the BIOS. If I then exit the BIOS (without even making any changes), the computer will boot into Windows.
    If I don't first enter the BIOS, the computer will USUALLY take me to a black screen that says:
    "Reboot and Select proper Boot device. Or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."
    At this point it won't boot any further.
    Also, the last message the BIOS displays (before the error) is:
    "00 USB mass storage devices found and configured".
    After that, all of the lines of text on the screen move up one level and then the screen goes black and soon after I get the Proper Boot Device error.
    I do not have anything plugged into USB ports except an ordinary mouse and ordinary keyboard (both of which I changed - in case they were faulty).
    My BIOS is set to boot from the Hard Drive first.
    I reset my CMOS.
    I do not have a CD in the CD drive.
    It used to be that this would ALWAYS happen if I (1) Turned off the Computer, (2) Unplugged it for 60 seconds, (3) Plugged it back in, and (4) Turned it on.  Now (after trying various things), it only SOMETIMES happens when I do this.
    Any ideas?

    Hello @GardenGuy1,
    I have read your post on how your desktop computer is having a difficult time booting into Windows, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
    To further diagnose this issue, I recommend testing the health of your system's hard drive by following the steps in this document on Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7). If the hard drive is found to be in good working order, I also suggest restoring your BIOS back to factory settings. This can be done by following this document on Recovering the BIOS.
    Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!
