Project duplication: Copy/Paste vs. Export/Import

Anyone have any thoughts on project duplication?
Presently I am copying a project and then pasting it into multiple new locations then renaming them. Recently I was in a training session where the instructor suggested exporting the project and then importing it claiming database size savings. Can anyone shed any insight?

I can't imagine why an export/import would be a smaller footprint within the database than a project copy/paste. Not to mention that if you are talking about a relatively large project it can take a substantial amount of time to export and import. One of our schedules that is about 18k activities takes approximately 1.5 hours to export/import where as a project copy/paste only takes about 10 minutes. Note that we do not copy the baseline schedules when replicating projects.

Is your DB unicode? If so, did you select the unicode flag in sapinst?

System copy using R3load ( Export / Import )

Hi,
We are testing System copy using R3load ( Export / Import ) using our production data.
Environment : 46C / Oracle.
while executing export, it takes more than 20 hours, for the data to get exported, we want to reduce the export time drastically. hence, we want to achieve it by scrutinizing the input parameters.
during export, there is a parameter by name splitting the *.STR and *.EXT files for R3load.
the default input for the above parameter is No, do not split STR and EXT files.
My question 1 : If we input yes instead of No and split the *.STR and *.EXT files, will the export time get reduced ?
My Question 2: If the answer is yes to Question 1, will the time reduced will be significant enough ? or how much percentage of time we can expect it to reduce, compare to a No Input.

The time of the export depends on the size of your database (and the size of your biggest tables) and your hardware capacity.

In case you have a few very large tables, and you have multiple cpu's and a decent disk storage, then splitting might significantly reduce the export time.
My Question 2: If the answer is yes to Question 1, will the time reduced will be significant enough ? or how much percentage of time we can expect it to reduce, compare to a No Input.
As you did not tell us about your database size and hardware details there is no way to give you anything but very basic metrics. Did you specify a parallel degree at all, was your hardware idling for 20 hrs or fully loaded already?
20 hrs for a 100gb database is very slow. It is reasonable (rather fast in my opinion) for a 2tb database.

Client Copy Using Client Export/Import

This is regarding Client Copy Using Client Export/Import Method. We have two system Production and Development system. Iam planning to do a client copy from from PRD to DEV. I know most of the steps to perform Client Copy.I have some doubhts So if some one can please help me out i would really appreciate it.

3) Is there any particular USER who is recommended to perform Client Copy or any USER can do it?

You can use your personal defined on the system UserID.

Same as above, just make sure you have an account on the client and you log on to the right client

I am not aware that you should use a particular user. I have been doing copies/deletions with my UserID, as system administrator.

Reorganization ( I personally) use SAPDBA tool. However -if you use ORACLE, there are other alternatives as well. What is your DB vendor? I will append more info in a bit.

System copy via SAPINST (Export/Import)

We are using SAP ERP EHP4 system on Windows with SAP MaxDB (Version: 7.7.07.09).
We would like to copy this productive system to QAS system.
Therefore we successfully run SAPINST (with running db and sap, because we cannot stop productive system) with option Export and have currently an valid export of productive system.
After we read several sap notes (such as 1014782, 129352) we found that the system copy procedure Backup/Restore will be recomended.
Questions
1) Can we still copy productive system via export and import option with SAPINT?
1a) Should/must the SAP Max DB instance be installed before runing SAPINT on the target server?
1b) Which SAP MaxDB version should be installed on the target server?
Has some one experience with system copy of SAP systems with SPA MaxDB via Export/Import?
It will be great to get some answers or recommendation.

Data migration from one DEV(DE1) system to other DEV(DE2) BW system using client copy or client export import

HI SAP Gurus,
Please find the below details:
SAP NetWeaver 7.3
We have to copy all customized or developed BW objects like master data, DSO's , Infocubes , Reports etc.
We need only the design changes but not the data within the DSO or cubes that exist .
We have tried below procedure:
1) Taken export of DE1 source client 400 with profile SAP_CUST
2) Imported transports generated for above export into DE2 target client 350.
3) Executed transaction SCC3 and performed post processing, post processing was successful . Still we are not able to see DSO's, infocubes ,reports.
Please lets us know what we need to do to fulfill our requirement.

BI systems has mostly cross client objects. So client copy with SAP_CUST profile will not serve your purpose.

Indesign CS3 - copy paste and export problem

When I try to copy text in Indesign CS3 and paste it in Word 2007 - or even in notepad - nothing happens. Pasting works fine when I stay in Indesign, but not when I try to paste it in another application.
So I tried to export text to RTF (selecting text, export to rtf, give a name als save), but no file was created.
Pasting text from another app. into Indesign just works fine.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?

I solve this problem in windows XP using the Phaedra's first optimistic tip and worked fine to me.
When I tested the IDcs3 in another profile it was clear that the problem is not in the program, but in permissions or another detail in the user config.
To simplifly my life, I create a new user account "MIGUEL2" in Windows as admin powers. With this new account I "reboot" my oldest ("MIGUEL") account to user mode. Restarted windows and, with "MIGUEL2" I reset the privileges to "MIGUEL" to admin user.
Now I can export txt and rtf files from IDcs3. ;)
You can skip the last step and work only with the new account or just work as user, not admin...
Really weird. Why this happened? I don't know... but I'm happy that was too simple to solve...

System copy based on export/import on MSCS

Hi,
a NW 7.0 istance (BW usage) on MSCS... we would like to copy to new host (as dev refresh). This MSCS is made of:
- host1 (first node)
- host2 (second node)
- mscdhost (mscs virtual host)
- orahost (oracle virtualhost... on a dedicated group)
- saphost (sap virtual host on a dedicate group)
Central istance is installed on host1 and a dialog istance is installed on host2.
So for the export I run sapinst (Software Life-Cycle OptionsSystem Copy / Oracle / Source System / Distributed System / High-Availability System / Based on ABAP and Java):
Preparation as: sapinst.exe SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME=orahost
Table splitting as: sapinst.exe SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME=orahost
Db Export as: sapinst.exe SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME=orahost
Central Istance as: sapinst.exe SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME=host1
Is it OK?

Can't Copy/Paste betweet Two Projects

I want to copy/paste a clip (which includes 2 video and 2 audio tracks) between two projects. I open Project 1 and copy a clip. I open Project 2 and paste. But the paste does not work. The last copy I did in Project 2 (of a clip that was already in Project 2) is the only thing that pastes, not the clip that I'm bring over from Project 1. So then I went back to Project 1 and "exported" an xml sequence which contained the clip I wanted to paste into Project 2. The import into project 2 worked but still I could not copy/paste from the imported sequence to the target sequence in Project 2. I didn't want to drag he new sequence imported from Project 1 into the the sequence into Project 2 because I needed to have access to all of the original tracks. Why doesn't a regular Windows copy/paste not work and what can I do to get the clip from Project 1 to the targeted timeline in Project 2?

If all else fails, couldn't you always just import the original sequence you're trying to copy from? Open it and copy/paste into the sequence you really want it in?

It would be great if anyone can share the documentu2019s/links (Not SAP homogeneous system copy guide) which you have prepared for the homog. system copy using export/import on Windows/oracle as i have done the system copy using backup/restore for ABAP stack and export/import for Java stack so far.
Therefore i am not sure about this procedure/prerequisites/checklist needs to prepare as i have gone through the SAP guide but it is not step by step document.

There are two approacahes for your project
1) First wether to use Oracle11g on target database
2) Continue with Database Oracle 10.2 on traget database
If you want to use Oracle11.2 on your target database you have to search the installers which are supported for 11.2 database. If the installers are available then only you can install your target database using Oracle11.2.Other wise t use Oracle10.2.0.4 is supported on Win2008r2. You can use this version of Oracle database to build ur target database.It works fine . Absolutely no problem.
Later on you can upgrade the Oracle10.2 to 11.2 Onwards.
If installers are avialble you can use Oracle11.2 also. There is absolutely no problem.
As per my knowledge installers are available and supported with Oracle11.2.Also check the PAM before arriving on any deciscion.

Space problems when copy/paste clip

Import of an DV-Pal digitalized 59 min S8-film from a DV-cassette by Magic iMovie filled 11,77 GB of HD space. That's o.k.. But when trying to create a new iMovie project using copy and paste by already 6 clips of this film, together lasting ca 1:28 min, new project's need of HD-space exploded to more than 33 GB. The menu diplay for format choice only shows DV, no differentiation between PAL and NTSC. The new clipframes however indicate DV-Pal. I deleted iMovie preferences and reinstalled the program, but without a positiv result.

what catspaw (greetings to NZ, hi Bruce!!) told you is:
when you import 60min as one solid clip,
and when you now choose a 1min portion of that clip
and when you copy/paste that into another project. ..
=> iM doesn't move only a 1/60th of the original, but the full ~13GBs.. !!
the idea behind this is, that you are allowed to 'modify' that shorter clip in the other project.. e.g. you can 'lengthen' it with the trimmers..
you have two options:
forget copy/paste, but Export/Full Quality your selections only.. due to dv, this is a lossless workflow, you don't lose any quality..
or, on import:
tell iM in its prefs, to 'chop' imports automatically into smaller chunks, e.g. 5min.
it doesn't matter on editing or playback, if oyu have a solid clip or many single clips..
copy/Pasting now a selection results in a much smaller 'background' file..

I have two iChat accounts (1 AIM and 1 .mac). I've got over 50 buddies on my AIM account and want to have them in my .mac account. Is there a way to Copy/Paste them or import them from one account to another?

Make sure they have Real Names and therefore Address Book Entires
They can be dragged from there
Once one Buddy List has all names/buddies then using AIM for Mac and it's export feature can export the whole list which can be Imported to another screen name (Still in AIM fo Mac)
This method overwrites the whole Buddy list so can not be used to copy Partial Lists.

Copy, Move, or XML import drops non 1080p clips with no warning

What are the limitations on moving, copying, or exporting/importing XML?
It seems that FCPX dropped all my clips that are not 1080p. And to make matters worse, FCPX went through the motions like it was moving/importing, but ignored the clips that were not 1080p and gave me no warning. So I worked on the project for 2 days only to discover that part of the clips were missing.
Has anyone else found this problem or do I have a configuration problem.
I have some Gopro video and timelapse that are large frame sizes, 2.7k and whatever the medium timelapse stills were set to. These are the problems.
This seems to work with XML on the same computer, but when moving to a second computer is were the problem comes in. The move/copy either events or clips dropped all my odd sized video clips, even on the same computer. Again no warning.
You can import the original clips but not copy, move, or export/import XML to another computer. I thought XML export was the recommended way of working in a distributed enviornment with FCPX 10.1?
Configuration:
2 computers
both OSX 10.9.2
both FCPX 10.1.1
all media is external to the libraray, so it needs to be re-linked when moved.
It does appear that if I copy the library to the other computer that everything is OK, but not with XML.
Should export/import XML work with non-standard frame sizes? It would seem that if you can import the original clip, that you should be able to copy, move, export/import XML.

Thank Louis for the reply.
My problem is not the media, but clip instances. I have the media on both computers. For some reason the unlinked images are not loading accept for the 1080p. When the clips show up, I can re-link them without problems.
I re-ran the XML import/export between computers, doing a complete round trip. This time it worked! I apparently am having a repeatability probelm, so I have some more work to do.
However when I did a Copy event to Library command, only the 1080p clips appeared.
Any suggestions on how to make this more repeatable? Like emptying a cache or something.
BTW the clips that were dropped are 2704x1524 - would that make any difference?

Can I copy/Paste Markers From Clip to Clip

I have a .dv clip that I have embed markers at the browser. It is a PAL.dv clip I extracted from a PAL DVD a customer wants edited down to 20 minutes from 1:30:00. Used MPEG StreamClip to rip to disc, but, for some reason, there are dropped frames (it plays back with stutters). So, I re-ripped the DVD to Quicktime DVCPRO-PAL and the video seems crisper and does not seem to have the dropped frames.
However, I have already embedded 40+ extended markers in the DV clip, and I am hoping to just copy ALL the markers and paste embed them into the MOV clip. The timecodes on the two clips are identical.
In lieu of copy/paste, can I import an EDL or EML list to apply the extended-markers to the new mov clip?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Right. Got it. Those markers are in the clip itself.
I just tried something as an experiment:
Drop your clip into the Timeline. You will see that the markers are on the video track -not in the time bar of the Timeline. So shift > arrow down will not move your playhead to the next marker.
Make the Viewer the active window. Press shift arrow down. Press F (match frame). Now the timeline window is active. Press M (places a marker in the Timeline). Repeat for your other markers.
Swap the video file in the Timeline for the better version. Drag the clip from the Timeline back to the browser.
You now have your new source clip with markers.
Not exactly copy and paste, but it's all I have at the moment.
