Promise raid crashing finder
I have a Promise VTrack raid connected to Mavericks Server. A strange thing started happening last night...
When I try to open the volume on the desktop the Finder either crashes or goes into a blinking/hang state.
It happens locally and also when connected via AFP on a remote workstation.
The problem started with x1 folder specifically 'Clients' on the volume. Remotely I can still connect to the other shared folders (not the problematic 'Clients' folder). Locally, I can't open the Raid volume at all without crashing.
If I open terminal, all the folders and data is there and the integrity looks good, including the problematic 'Clients' folder.
Also checked the RAID integrity and everyhting is in the green ie. no damaged drives or rebuilds in progress
Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this or how to fix?
Crash report looks like this...

MTU > 1530 crashes finder. Pretty much says it. MTU of 1531 will crash AFP connection attemps and kill the finder.
NICs support jumbo frames. Trying to share between two PowerMac G4's. Only MTU that works is 1530 and less. 1531 and over will crash the computer.
Need to get jumbo frames running.
When I go to try to resurect the finder I get a -600 error.^ I don't really understand what that means?
Reader Reports (most recent first)
Apple PCI-X Gigabit cards: (follow-up from reader that reported on hawking cards on 8/29)
(added 9/1/2006)
"Hello again... Recently I found that the Hawking cards worked and are available via newegg, and I mentioned trying out the Apple "PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card" in two old PowerMac G4s to try to boost the file transfer performance (MB/S) using 9000 MTU on the Apple cards vs 1500 MTU on the hawking ones. The cards came, have nice LEDs (emerald green and sapphire blue), and are very easy to install compared to other cards. I'm testing using two powermac g4s (sawtooth's) one with the stock 400 MHz proc, other with a 1.8 GHz giga upgrade, both with 512 MB PC-100 ram, the test volumes are both raid-0 on both machines over two hdd. The Apple NICs are 64-bit.
The Apple "PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card" is based on the BROADCOM BCM5703CKHB chipset. The cards show they are able to handle jumbo frames in the ethernet tab in the network pref. pane. I set both cards to 9000 MTU which is usually greyed out if you have a non-jumbo card. Cards are connected over a DGS-1024D switch with 9.6k frames.
I tried opening a AFP to my PVR machine (the other PM G4), the window popped up to enter the IP (I entered the IP), then I authenticated (that worked fine), then the next screen after that is the one where you choose your volume. I chose the volume and pressed OK and the AFP froze.
I found that using a MTU > 1530 crashes the finder, forcing a hard restart. I tested MTU at 1531-1540 and at every step the finder is "(not responding)" after volume selection over AFP. Very odd. I called Apple enterprise support and they said the card has no free support (even though I just bought two of them less than 2 days ago) and it would cost $199 to get started on a support case to work on an explanation why 9000 MTU causes the crashes. I returned the cards.
But before I return the cards I'll mention the performance at 1530 MTU. The xfers from one G4-A raid-0 volume to G4-B raid-0 volume produce a STR of about 25 MB/S. The Apple NICs perform very slightly better than the hawking units. The STR somestimes hit 26-28 MB/S. I used a stopwatch and the file size to get the MB/S.
The performance is exactly the same as the Hawking cards, but at 4 times the price. Not a very good bargain huh? The Apple web site says that the PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card requires a 800 MHz G4. Funny, as the card works semi-fine in a 400 MHz G4, albeit only at 1530 MTU. Perhaps a 800 MHz G4 is needed for 9000 MTU? Apple had no ready explanation why this is so, and mentioned it would cost $200 to start a ticket. That's how much both cards cost.
I contacted Corky at Small-Tree and he said the 90mt is my best bet for using jumbo frames and copper gig-e on a powermac g4. The 90mt is $150 a pop. He said that no one has ever tried one in a sawtooth as far as he could remember. Once my apple RMA posts to my paypal I'll drop $300 for 2 90mt's and try it out. If they can do 9000 MTU as he claims over AFP I'll keep em only if they get me over 25 MB/S.

Promise RAID vs. Via RAID
When I was setting up my system I wasn't really sure which RAID controller I should use in order to get the best performance...I opted to go with the Via controller as it is an integrated part of the KT800 chipset whereas the Promise RAID controller is an optional add-in chip (or such is my understanding), so I figured using the Via controller would give the best performance...but I'm curious as to how the Promise controller performs. Has anyone tried setting an array up both ways and testing to see which controller performed better?
I'm running two 36 GB WD Raptor SATA drives in RAID-0 off the Via controller, and I get a score of 61 MB/sec in Sandra 2004's File System benchmark...if anyone is running a similar array off the Promise controller and could post their benchmark results, I'd appreciate it.I've 'tested' both controllers.
Before the K8T, I was using a KT4 ultra with a Promise 376 and two raptors RAID0 (around 60-70Mb/s with HDTach)
Then I switched to the Promise 378 of the K8T (I keep promise to keep data). A little bit better than with the 376 of the KT4V but not very clear. I recently put the two raptors on the VIA. A little bit better but again, not very clear. It seems however that with the VIA the output is more 'unstable' .. I mean: with Promise, HD Tach gives me a straight line from the begining of the disk array to the end; with VIA, it's less straight.
I think I will crash my RAID 0 to test with one raptor on the VIA and one on the Promise. OSsystem for a disk, software and apps for the other one. I'm not sure that it's a goo idea -
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone on the list had problems with the Promise RAID.
My system is a 875P Neo. The two SATA drives are Seagate ST2380023AS. The system shas been wrking fone for about a month than troubles started. My system is updated to all the latest patches WinXP and MSI wise as well.
The system keep corrupting itself. When rebooting WinXP goes into a repair mode and run chkdsk. After in installing PAM 4.0 and enabled the logging I see these messages popping up in the event viewer:
Source: fasttx2k
event ID: 9
Desc: The device \device\scsi\fasttx2k1 did not respond within the the timeout period.
I had to recover WinXP a few times now and I can't keep working with the system this way and wondering when it is going to corrupt some files what I have not backed up yet.
I can't find any answers on Promise's website or here.
Any help appreciated,
--Laszlo--Thanks for your help. I think my config is more simple than yours. I only have WinXp on this system on the Promise controller. I have the two drives in a stripe configuration, RAID 0 with 2x80GB drives. Same manufacture same BIOS on them.
I am not using the Intel SATA controller. The only device is a CD drive there.
What can I configure on the RAID controller? The only option I saw is for cache. Write Through or Write Back. Mine is set to the default of Write Back.
How could I verify that the drives individualy performing well? Is there any utility from MSI or Promise allow me to do that? What version of the Promise driver are you using and what is your BIOS version? I have the latest available from MSI which is 1.00.1.29 and my system BIOS is 1.9.
Thanks, -
K7T266Pro Promise Raid not detected anymore
Have just installed a MSI FX5700 Ultra graphics card on a K7T266Pro, and am now unable to use the onboard Promise raid controller.
I realise it's the card that is causing it, but can't find out what it has done. I've also looked for a bios update for the raid controller but can't find one. Motherboard has latest bios and drivers, as has the FX5700.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Pete.hi martin555,
you should have really started a new thread, giving as much info about your problem and your system as you can, rather than add to this old and unresolved thread
but as we are here now, please post full system specs, and also what the blue screen error message says if you can -
Promise Raid won't recognize all of my HD space??!! HELP
I have the MSI 845 Ultra board with the promise RAID controller on it. This is my first time using raid, so bear with me. I purchased 2 80GB HD's for the purpose of striping to gain some speed. I have them hooke up as masters 1 to each port, but the problem is that the controller/MB tells me that they are 33GB dirves!! When I go into the configuration mode its all they show up as. When I go into windows its all they show up as!!
I have tried to delete and recreate the array many times with no luck. I have tried to find some setting in the BIOS which would let me change the size, but no luck....
Do I have to individually go and format them on a normal channel 1st before hooking them up to the RAID?
Is there something I'm missing here besides 100GB of space??!
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance.Master on Samsung should be |::: with the orientation being |----IDE----||jumpers||power|
Did you by any chance set it to ||:: ?
This is the master with cylinder limitation mode which is intended to force 32GB on the drive. -
Howto use onboard Promise Raid Controller pdc20265 on 694D PRO AR Ver1
Currently I'm running Win2k on my MSI 694D Pro AR Ver 1.0 board with Bios version W6321VMS.310 and the included Fasttrack-Family Win2k Raid-Controller driver for my Promise Raid Controller pdc20265 with lite bios.
Due to software updates I'm now absolutely required to switch to Windows XP Prof. However this is the cause for my inquiry:
I downloaded and installed the latest available Bios version W6321VMS.370 from MSI site.
On installation of XP I tried to include the pdc20265 Fasttrack raid driver from MSI site to get access to my HD's. However WinXP couldn't find any HD's. Remark: XP with SP1 and VIA 4in1443v.exe installed.
So I repeated this procedure with the original drivers Fasttrack family and pdc202065 which were attached on floppy. Unfortunately no success as well.
Then I have put the HD on the Ultra66 channel and installed XP first without raid and ultra 100 support.
Later I re-enabled the on-board promise device in bios and unfortunately WinXP didn't recoginze the device by itself. So I provided the latest pdc20265 driver from MSI site. XP complained that the driver is not digitally signed. After reboot the promise device reported an error under WinXP.
I repeated this procedure with the original drivers Fasttrack family and pdc202065 which were attached on floppy. Unfortunately no success as well.
Why MSI-Site says this pdc20265 driver supports WinXP if there are only the Win2k and WinME,98... drivers included?
Currently I can't use the promise device at all under WinXP. This means even I don't have an Ultra 100 controler available.
Has anyone an idea how to install HD's on WinXP with the corresponding promise raid drivers for my pdc20265 onboard chipset?
I'd really appreciate your help! Some of the suggestions I don't understand quite well. Please could you explain further:
> remove the other two drives leaving the raid pair
> and cd only
>
> put raid 2nd in boot order
What do you mean with that?
> reboot press the key you need to get in to raid bios
> create the array and make it bootable
array is already created (Note: there is important data on it, can't recreate it! Only Segate 80GB is free and empty)
I don't want to boot from raid.
>
> now boot to cd to install, right at beginning it will say
> press f6 to install mass storage drive you need the
> driver on floppy to install it
I already tried the XP-Install routine to specify additional mass storage drivers. (Note: 1 single 80GB Drive was attached) Which are the suitable ones? As mentioned I tried the following:
1. Attached floppy 'Fasttrack family drivers'
Result: Message: Driver is for Win2k only. Not a single Harddrive shows for installing XP.
2. Attached Floppy (Promise Ultra 100 lite, 256 only)
Result: Driver is for Win2k only. Installation procedure hangs.
3. Driver from MSI-Site for pdc20265. Same as 2.
4. Extracting via4in1 drivers and putting WinXPIDE drivers on floppy:
Result: Installation routine doesn't recoginze drivers on floppy.

Which is the right driver for WinXP to specify for mass storage device at WinXP installation? -
I have had this system up for about 8 months. One day when converting mp3 to wav the system crashed. When rebooting I would get a black screen or it would hang during the boot process. I was using XP and W2K server - never had an issue until this crash, and now problems when booting with either.
I attempted to do update the raid drive (got the grand message re: stop what the heck your doing or face certian death or Continue and prepair to die - when updating the driver in xp). Nothing worked. So I fdisked the drive (20gb ibm) drive that was my c: and reinstalled W2k Server...still seeing the same issue.
Raid array says it is functional, but that is about it. System hangs durning boot, and if ide 3 and or 4 is unplugged, I can then boot up and work off of the 20gb drive.
Anyone, anyone?
System:
2000 server on a 20gb ibm
1.5gb of Ram
2- 40gb ibm darkstar hard drives in array
Promise raid lite 1.13
K7T266 Pro2-RU
tried new cables,
changing around the jumper,
latest raid drivers from our friends at msi,
but today I am thinking hammer may do the trick...Still no luck, today I went out and downloaded
File Scavenger 2.0.
It could see the array, and for 40 dollars I can buy a license to repair the drives...or so they say.
Does MSI have any raid repair utilities, or does anyone know of any good raid repair programs -
KA92 Platinum - JBOD SATA - Vista 64 - Promise RAID
I just setup a new machine with the KA92 Platinum and almost everything is running perfectly excluding the 2 750GB SATA 3.0gb drives I have installed on the Promise SATA ports.
Configuration - (Second RAID enabled, onboard ATA set to IDE, 750's individual JBOD)
SATA Port #1 - WD VelociRaptor 300GB system drive
SATA Port #2 - DVDRW
SATA Port #3 - BRD\DVDRW
SATA Port #4 - Case eSATA copnnection
Promise SATA Port #1 - Samsung 750 SATAII
Promise SATA Port #2 - Samsung 750 SATAII
The issue is that although the Devicer Manager recognizes the 2 drives () and they are visible in Disk Management, I cant create a new volume on either of them. As soon as I try to create a volume Windows recognizes a new device and tries to install a driver which it cant find.
I tried removing the Promise Drives and Changing the ATA to RAID but that just caused BSOD until I reset it.
Any Ideas?
ThanksRegrettably that last idea didn't work for me :( I formatted the two drives then re-connected the two drives and enabled the promise raid without configuring the discs into an array, booted into Windows and the drives didn't show up anywhere, I then added them to JBOD in promise config (which deletes the boot info) and started into Windows with the results I was experiencing before. To be honest, at this point Ive pretty much given up on the Promise ports ever working for me, at least with SATA drives, perhaps SAS drive would have better luck but I'm not going to spend the money to find out, it looks like an external eSata setup for me... I just wish these were regular Sata ports rather than promise, life would have been sooooo much easier, and cheaper in the end.... Thanks again everyone!

K9A2 *V1* Bios 1.8 - No drivers for Promise RAID controller.
Does anyone know which set of Promise Raid drivers work with the updated Promise firmware that is part of the 1.8 bios update?
Version 1.2 of the bios includes Promise version 28.1030.0021 which works with at least 1.1.1030.27 of the promise drivers.
Version 1.8 of the bios includes Promise version 28.1030.0032 for which I cannot find any working drivers; do they exist? (Vista cannot see the controller and is unable to locate a suitable driver. Trying to use existing promise driver fails since it will not recognise the device)
Just had a brainwave. On the MSI site, there is an updated driver pack for the Promise controller (this is a V1 board); this version is
Vista32/64 Ver.: 1.1.1030.47
Is this the version that is compatible with v1.8 of the bios (and hence 28.1030.0032)?Give them a try, they if they work will show soon enough.

Showing preview column in icon mode crashes finder
Issue: Finder crashes and my icons on my desktop disappear then reappear when attempting to view a file of any type in icon mode with "show preview column" selected in "Show View Options".
I don't recall any recent updates or any changes to my G5. I can open a file in its application program (i.e. a .jpg opens in Photoshop) if I double click it quickly enough before Finder crashes. The only way I can get icon view not to crash Finder is by unchecking the "show preview column" box in "Show view options". I like the preview option and would very much like to get it back.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.Sorry, no idea how I missed your reply back on the 29th!
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

There isn't anything special about the PSD's that do this, some were created on my old WinXP machine and others on this iMac. I've uploaded one to my server in case anyone wants to take a look (especially someone at Apple!!) - be advised that using QuickView to view this file will crash Finder, although if you open the file in Photoshop you'll see that it's just a simple, single-layer document. Nothing fancy at all.
Anyway, you can download the file here: http://www.mavisxp.com/public/Finder_Crasher.zip
Once more, using QuickView to view this file will crash Finder, as will using CoverFlow on the folder containing this file. On my iMac the crash and subsequent re-launch of Finder is very quick, but you may not be so lucky. Anyway, I hope this problem is solved soon, so that I can use CoverFlow without having to worry about crashing Finder!I'm definitely using maximize compatibility. I've tried all kinds of things to try and nail down what the mystery factor is. Most of my psds do open fine. I've tried changing the colour profile, changing whether the file has a bg layer, turning preview on and off. thanks for trying though, and I'm all ears for any other suggestions. It's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if it's something to do with embedded metadata--as far as I can tell, they're all files that were generated out of Lightroom.

K9A2 Platinum bios 1.4 or 1.5 Promise RAID fail Boot.
Ok I have BIOS version 1.3 running fine. I want to upgrade to a bios that officially support the phenom and its power usage. So back in may I try to upgrade to bios 1.4. No good the machine will not boot the RAID set that contains window XP. :( Reverted back. Contacted support. Not much help... a few weeks pass. Contact support again they send me bios version 1.51. Same issue. Reverted back to 1.3. Recently I tried the final release of 1.5 with the same issue.
Anyone out there using a phenom on the K9A2 and booting with the Promise RAID controller in a striped 0 set ? How did you get it to work with the current bios version. Tech support 'claims' they have no problem with the bios and that they have tested it with the promise controller booting to XP.
Thanks,
Jon HarrellConsidering the very large files that regularly run through the system and the extra cpus that windows inefficiently uses I doubt a software controller would impact the performance gains significantly. The units we have prep large format presentations and regularly handle very large files. Bandwidth is key. If this was the average desktop or even a web server yes 1 drive would most definitely be faster. But that would be a different subject.
Although now we might just be considering scraping the whole MSI created mess, and purchasing a hardware solution like that of the quad sata raid in our server.
But for now:
Does any one know the perfect combination?
e.g. Promise driver 1.1.1030.47 !work with Bios 1.50 (promise 2.8.1030.0032)
Thanks,

.dmg file crashes Finder
I have a .dmg file that crashes Finder after mounting. The mounted image icon appears on the desktop, but not in the Finder window sidebar. When I try and open Finder crashes and starts up again.
I have tried verifying and repairing the file in Disk Utility and everything checks out fine.
Does anyone have any ideas?Just to add a bit to Niel's coolest solution for this problem I have seen yet:
1. You will want to relaunch Finder to create a new Desktop folder: just hold down the option key and click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select relaunch
2. You can then move any good files you had out of the OldDesktop folder back into the newly created Desktop folder
3. You can then toss the OldDesktop folder with the offending files into the trash
And Niel: bravo! Finally a decent solution the Finder-Desktop problem! This is GREAT!

Drobopro ethernet crashes finder
drobopro ethernet crashes finder . finder freezes up and i have to restart .. drobopro doesnt stay online with ethernet for long
Hi again,
1) I've done this 2 or maybe three times
2) I don't want to think about this "possibility"
3) I think my problem is due to one of two things: either there is a bug in the system, or there is a problem with my Ethernet card.
First thing in the morning I'll go to an authorized Apple store!
If you're still here, do you think it's possible to damage the Ethernet card alone? Is the Ethernet card a hardware thing one can replace? If you're not here, I'll hopefully get my answers in the morning (and a new functional system/computer). Thanks a lot for your advices!
