Proper bitrate setting for Compressor

I am trying to encode an wedding video (1hr. 29min). With FCP 4.5 and Compressor 1.2.1, I never had any problems just chose the 120min High Quality preset and it was a done deal. Since upgrading to FCP 5 and Compressor 2 I have developed tremors and a right eye twitch at the very thought of encoding a video longer than 20 minutes. At this point I am willling to sacrifice time for the highest quality. I have changed the motion estimation from Best to Better as suggested in many replies to similar posts on this topic, and also tried One Pass and Two Pass(not the Best ones though). What preset should I choose and what modifications to that preset should I make to ensure the highest quality video, I don't care how long it takes. Or is it worth investing the money in BitVice? Does BitVice preserve the chapter markers created in FCP?

Does BitVice preserve the chapter markers created in FCP?
Yes it does, and with chapter markers created in Media 100 too.
I suggest you read about how it works in the file named
"Read Me • Addendum •.pdf", which is located in the BitVice folder.

  • Best setting for compressor-JVC Everio Hard Disc Camcorder Quicktime file?

    Hi,
I am still having trouble figuring out why compressor is taking so long. Maybe I need to call Apple Support. I tried the web source setting-medium quality, but it is still taking 4+ hours, and continues to increase in length till completion. It is imported from fcp quicktime movie. What is the best setting to use ?#Agghh this is frustrating. I only want to upload this onto a file share web data base system, I don't even need to burn it to a DVD. Should I choose the H 2.6.. for iPod, the web source setting, or something else? These are just 1 hour/ 1 1/2 hour movies that fit on a 4.7 GB DVD before I imported them into fcp>now the fcp file has expanded up to 69GB. What is the deal? I re-installed fc studio. Any suggestions?

If a file from a DVD is now 69 GB then it must have been converted along the way from the original DVD.
How are you importing? What are the specs of the file? What is your work flow process?

  • Setting For Compressor 3.5.3

After many years of using Compressor from Final Cut Pro 16x9 mini tape to Quicktime to Compressor to DVD using DVD Studio Pro 4 very successfully without any problems, I find myself wondering about the settings for maintaining the high quality picture of AVCHD from a new Canon camcorder.  I have gone from FCP to Quicktime with great picture quality but am somewhat stuck on what Compressor 3.5.3 settings should be used to get that quality into DVD Studio Pro 4.  Do I stick with my 16:9 SD and 2.0 Dolby Digital Audio setting which I have used for years?  Or do I get ProRes involved at this level again (used with Final Cut Pro)?  Again help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to asume that your "QuicktTime with Great Qualty" is Pro Res 422, which used as a source file in Compressor can produce very good DVD encodes for DVDSP.
You may not need to adjust your settings at all. If your 16:9 mini dv was HDV, then you already have experience in going from HD to SD. However, if your tape camera shot SD anamorphic, you may find at least one adjustment helpful that wasn't necessary with an SD source. Specifically, activate Frame Controls and set the Resize Filter to Best.
    Good luck.

  • WMV and SWF setting for Compressor 3

    Hi I'm running Compressor 3.5.1
I have purchased CRAM Compressor plugin which has nearly everything i need... apart from WMV and SWF settings, anyone know where i could get these plugins from - i know i can do it through the quicktime setting feature but is there not a set of presets i can download?
    Thanks

    Never heard of cram.
WMV is only supported by Flip4Mac but it will cost you. I prefer to do my heavy WMV creation on a PC.
SWF is handled many different ways. You can output H.264 and change the file extension or you can purchase dedicated SWF codec support. Easy searches at versiontracker.com. Just look for flash encoders.
The best way to get SWF is to use Adobe Flash, IMNSHO. Flash out of Flash is, umm, Flash, and your clients can't argue with you.

  • Proper export settings for Compressor 4 from FCPX?

    Hello all,
    First, system specs (Mac Pro):
    Processor  2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  12 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
My story in a nut shell:
I'm slowly transitioning over from FCP7 to X.  I like a lot about FCPX, it's lacking in some areas, but worth the move now after the updates (and hopefully more to come).  Anyway, I put together a 24 minute project with a few layers of text and a filter or two in Final Cut Pro X.  Now, in FCP 7, I'd simply click the 'create DVD' button in the 'Share' menu, send it to Compressor 3, and Compressor 3 would FLY on this machine.  And I'm talking a full blown 2 hour wedding video with tons of effects and graphics filters would take about 3-4 hours to export to a DVD file.  About the only thing I would change in Compressor 3 from any default settings is the destination folder for the exported files.  Any other format would fly too (Bluray, web video files, etc.).  LIFE WAS GRAND!
Then, expecting the same if not better results from Compressor 4 (only exporting a 24 minute lightly edited video at that), to my surprise, it took Compressor 4 9 HOURS to create a DVD file.  And this was after stopping it a couple times to search for better settings on my own on these forums (found a few threads talking about doing a custom cluster in QMaster-- which I never did with Compressor 3-- to no avail).
I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the issue is... Compressor 4 should have handled a 24 minute project in under an hour, not nine hours.  Any ideas?
I'm hoping someone with plenty of experience with FCPX and C4 who has already figured this stuff out can help me step-by-step with some general settings or guidelines to help get C4 up to speed on my end.  These forums have been invaluable in the past and I'm hoping for another quick fix:)  If I can't figure it out, I'll have no choice but to ditch FCPX and C4 for another year and stick with FCS.

    Hey Russ,
I tested your workflow on a 30 second commercial I recently did and the QT movie file expoted very nicely in about 15 seconds.  Then, in Compressor 4, I exported it to a DVD file (after adding a few phoney chapter markers), and that process took about 45 seconds.  So I'm generally pleased with those results.  The combined process sounds like it'll take about twice the length (maybe a tad more) of the length of the source video file I'm exporting, so I'm happy with those results.  That's about the same time I experienced with FC7 and C3 when used in tandem, with the one less step of exporting to a QT movie file first.
But, I like the idea of using a QT master file anyway.  It's funny how everyone kind of creates their own workflow and process when it comes to things like this!
Anyway, I'm not sure if there's an answer for my original issue... sounds like it's something Apple will eventually address as they continue to refine FCX and C4.  But in the meantime, your workaround/workflow sounds like it'll allow me to continue to experiment and learn FCX more this year, before hopefully converting over to it completely next year (crossed-fingers Apple works out most of the remaining kinks by then!).  And for that, I greatly appreciate the time you took to help!
Happy Easter or Passover or Sunday if you're neutral... lol.
    Cheers,
    Matt

  • 2 THIS COMPUTER in my Cluster setting for compressor

I am having issues with compressor not exporting and failing when trying to export. I notice when I go to hit submit I see 2 THIS COMPUTER on my cluster, only with PIFF (which is the name on my account)
how can I remove these as I believe there is a conflict. thanks

Piff Aroni, it seems like you're having one problem after another. As soon as you fix one thing, something else goes wrong. This is very unusual behavior and would suggest that something serious is wrong with your system.
I would suggest completely wiping the drive and reinstalling everything from scratch. If that doesn't work, I would recommend calling AppleCare or taking the computer into your local Apple Store.

  • What is the best Compressor setting for best quality video playback on an iBook g4?

I know the iBook and G4's in general are very outdated today, but I need to ask anyways. I have some video projects in 720p and 1080p in which I have down converted to 480p and also exported to MPEG-2 for DVD (personal wedding videos and videos made for my clients using Final Cut Studio). Anything encoded at most resolutions using h264 won't play on my iBook. Even 480p.
I have about 20 hours of mixed video content that I need it in a format that is suitable for an iPhone 4 and an iBook 12" with a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM and I added a 250 WD 5400 IDE hard disk (running 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 for Classic Mode). I know the iBook doesn't seem like the best tool for modern video playback, but I need to figure out which setting will play best with iPhone 4 and iBook so I don't need to make 2 local copies of each video for each device.
The iBook plays best with the original DVD output MPEG-2 file and playing back in QT Pro or VLC... but I already have 180 GB's of MPEG-2 files now and my little HD is almost full. I don't have enough room to convert all the iPhone 4 counterparts. If I use Compressor 3.5.3, what is the optimal setting for iBook and iPhone .m4v or .mp4 files that can play on both devices? So far 720x400-480 widescreen videos @ 29fps works great on my iPhone, Apple TV 2, and other computers but seems to murder my poor iBook if encoded with high profile (and still choppy on simple profiles). 640x480 (adding black matte bars to my videos) plays fine in MPEG-2 but drops frames or goes to black screen if I convert it to mp4 (and looks bad on the iPhone 4 because of the matte). But if I convert on any of the simple profiles, it looks terrible on my iPhone 4 and a blocky on the iBook.
This is the problem leading me to having 2 copies of each video and eating my hard disk space. What is the best video setting for both playback on the iBook and iPhone 4? Can the iBook playback H264 at all in decent resolutionsat all? I don't really want to have a 480p .m4v collection for the iPhone 4 and a MPEG-2 RAW collection just to play the same videos on the iBook.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Setting for best quality in compressor

    Hi.
I'm running FCP 5.1  and Compressor 2.3.1.  For best quality videos on youtube I've heard it's a good idea to max out the free space they make available to you.  What are the best settings I should use in Compressor for maximum quality uploads to youtube?  Also what's a good setting for good quality video with a smaller file size?  Also I should note most of my videos uploaded are of short duration 1 minute to 5 minutes.  I've been using the settings DVNTSC and it's okay but maybe there's something better you can recommend?  Also I tend to use Toast to burn DVD's.  What's a good setting for best quality dvd's?
    thank you!

For Youtube encoding, read these: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/you_tube_redux_gary.html and http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/you_tube_hd_gary.html
Keep in mind that the more compressed the file is (smaller file size), the lessor quality.
As for DVD compression, I've always found Toast's encoder to create poorer quality DVDs than Compressor or DVD Studio Pro.  The best method would be to export a self-contained or reference movie from FCP (Do NOT use QuickTime Conversion), then import that file into Compressor.  Use the DVD preset in Compressor that best matches your movie's duration.  You can duplicate and adjust presets as needed for your particular movie.  Compressor will create the needed MPEG-2 video file (.m2v) and Dolby Digital audio file (.ac3).  Import those two files into DVD Studio Pro for authoring and burning.

  • DVD Compressor setting for use in DVD Studio Pro

I'm trying to create a playable dvd that has using dvd studio pro. However I want to compress the .mov file using compressor first. I've tried several setting, ut I get the same blurry text and graphic results.
What's the best setting for a hi quality dvd, the same quality has professional dvds.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The best one you'll get with Compressor is DVD Best Quality 90 mins. Tweak it any higher than that and you run the risk of drives refusing to play the disc.
You can't make it look like a professional DVD because the pros don't use DVD Studio Pro. They use significantly more expensive software and encoding hardware, and the discs are replicated, not burned.

  • What is the best compressor setting for dvds

What is the best compressor setting for dvds that is not for HD dvd players? I used "DVD Best quality 90 min" and changed the GOP setting to 7.5 and my dvd looks terrible. the text is blurry and the colors are bad.

correction the bit rate is 7.5

  • Compressor setting for DVD Studio Pro

What's the best Compressor (v.3.5.3) setting for DVD burning in DVD Studio Pro?
I used DVD: Best Quality 90 but the DVD burned via DVDSP plays on a Mac but not on DVD players and PCs.
The DVDSP log contains this line for each of the four video and audio assets:
Note: The file ‘<filename>-MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass.m2v’ found in the ‘Final edits’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.

Message means nothing.  It could be the brand of DVD media you're using.  Have you tried it on set top DVD players?

  • Best Compressor encoding setting for DVD

I have an 80 min FCP project. It is a stage show where part of the frame is dark and the stage is light with gels and the Dancers. What is the Best encoding setting for a standard size DVD
I tried 90 minute 2-past best DVD but there was severe blocking/chopping.
    Any tricks & tips?
    Thanks

I don’t understand that. (Me not so smart.) If there is a standardized Unicode value associated with glyph X, then how is it that none of the Unicode character sets in Firefox abide? Add a font? As I understand it, a font is just a re-representation of known characters. It seems like I’m hearing that not only does there have to be a character set decode of the data I’m viewing, but also a font that takes that Unicode value and translates it to something visual. That doesn’t wash. Between databases data is converted to and fro, irrespective of OS/App fonts installed. Sybase <-> Oracle doesn’t need a font installed. Viewing from SQL I don’t need a font installed.
But – thank you cor-el for effectively resolving my problem – even if I don’t understand the logic. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

  • Where did all the setting for printing go in PSE8-Mac?!

OK, I'm probably missing some obvious settings somewhere, please tell me after you read my rantings...
I'm using the 'Full Edit' mode, assuming that is important. But the new Print Dialog looks like it has been dumbed down for some one, not sure who, however has it has me completely confused. There are now only three 'steps' for printing. One and two are self explanatory. However...
Step three concerns paper size, image size and several other details. Just for testing, I created a new 4 x 6 inch, 300dpi page and drew some lines. Command-P. Proper printer is selected, select "Letter" as the paper size. 4 x 6 inch appears selected as the "Print size" (I thought that was because of the original page size, but it appears to simply be the default). That is a detail that could easily be over looked by a new user. If the original image is larger than 4 x 6, it will, obviously be either cropped or reduced to fit those dimensions! It seems to me that the "Select Print Size" should automatically assume to be the image size. OTOH, I can see that some people may want to do all their printing on one size of paper. In that case, why not have a preference for the default and let the user change it when they change paper sizes (if they want)?
Now, if the user happens to notice that a new 8 x 10 inch image is going to be printed in a 4 x 6 area, she will now decide to check the other settings available in the pop up menu. OK, there IS an 8 x 10 inch choice. But look, what's this "Custom" choice? Let's investigate...Now this is strange! The defaults there seem to be 1.383 inches for height AND width! Who came up with that weird number?!
Oh, there is a "Scale to Fit Media" check box. Checking that now makes the height and width somewhat closer to reality, they now indicate the pape dimensions. That IS logical, but not extremely helpful, IMHO. By the way, the second time one selects the "Custom" choice, the correct, original image size appeared in the Print size boxes. Although I cannot seem to get those to reappear. Oh well...
My point is, how do these confusing configurations help? Beyond me, anyway.
BTW, the dpi settings all seem to be 'computed' at one less than the number set by the user for an image. For example, a new image page created at 300 dpi shows 299 in the Custom dialog, 150 shows 149, etc. Close, but why not exact? Furthermore, why can't the user select any dpi they choose? Isn't that what the computer if for; calculate what happens to the pixels when they print at a different setting than the image? Sure, the user should be warned that terrible images my result, but if that's what the user wants, let it be done! Who's running this show, anyway? Oh yeah, I remember, now...excuse me for asking, I'm only a paying customer, what do I know?!
Lastly, if one has more than one image open, every single one can easily be printed, accidentally. Why? Because they will all appear in the Print Dialog. Don't you see them? Over there on the left. Yeah, I see them, but why doesn't the image I have in front, the one I'm working on, be the one I probably want to print? Many of the others may simply be images I'm borrowing parts from. Why do the developers think I always want to print every image that might be open? I don't have any idea, either. Sure, there are a couple of ways to prevent this multiple image printing; select the one you don't want to print and use the "minus" button or simply close all those images before going to the Print dialog. Guess what. Using the 'minus' button only works for this printing, the next time you ask to print they will all be there, again. And, what if you aren't really finished using some of those extra images that you closed? Now you get to re-open them all again. Completely unnecessary steps because of poor user considerations/research, in my humble opinion. Again, this is exactly the thing that preferences are made for. Or, put them in the "Edit Guided" mode! Or, better yet, just give me back the old Print dialog! Nice!
Now, I am extremely glad to see that PSE can now remember to keep that stupid Panel bin out of the way! Finally! Three more inches of screen to work with!!! Hooray!! Unfortunately, it still can't remember what the last setting for the jpeg quality was...still defaults to ZERO! Sure, that's the setting I always want to use, it's so much fun letting people try to guess what is in the image...one would think after 8 iterations this could be fixed. One down, umpteen to go. Oh well, what do you want for $80?

Thanks for your listening/reading and I'll take your advice about dropping a note to the developers, but I won't be holding by breath! I doubt that they consider this a real problem. It's really just my ranting!
Your solution is probably the 'fix' they might suggest, anyway. However, I'd rather have the screen space than a list of thumbnails of images I already have open. command-plus and/or minus is a pretty quick way of making it easy to see anything that might be visible. Of course, I'm sure there are other uses for the Project Bin that many find useful. Even though I have a 24" iMac, I rather like using the screen space the way I want, not an arbitrary way that got developed. I just don't see why developers can't program an app to allow every conceivable method of use by every living and future user! LOL!!!
I guess today was the first time I've printed anything since installing 8. I was, quite confused when presented with the new Print interface. Actually, I thought that must be part of the 'Guided' set up which I assume leads one by the hand as much as possible. "Thank you Adobe, but I'm trying to avoid unnecessary contact with strangers right now." LOL! At least I know I didn't miss some setting somewhere.
Thanks! Have a great weekend! And don't get scared too much tonight!

  • Best setting for Canon VIXIA HF R21 for YouTube

I am looking for the best or most optimal setting for shooting video with my Canon VIXIA HF R21 camera.
I am using a MacBook Pro laptop and Adobe Premiere Elements 10.
My goal is to produce the best quality videos for a "YouTube" channel. The videos will be for a teenage car show shot outdoors and narrated.
    The current DEFAULT settings are:
    Recording Mode = SP, 1440x1080
    Bitrate = 7Mbps
    Codec = MPEG4-AVC/H.264
    Frame Rate = 60i
    Digital Image stabilization = standard
Here are possible "alternative selections" - please let me know if any of these settings are better than the Default settings for YouTube.
    Change Recording Mode to
    1. MXP = 1920x1080 @ 24Mbps
    2. FXP = 1920x1080 @ 17Mbps
    3. XP+ = 1440x1080 @ 12 Mbps
    Change Frame Rate to
    1. PF30
    Digital image stabilization
    1. Dynamic
    2. Standard
    3. Off
I will use Adobe Premiere Elemebnts 10 to upload the final edited video - what setting are the best upload compression settings if I want to upload for the ebst quality?

BillFlorida, I'm not sure what you're not getting here. Have you tried any of the things we've suggested?
There are two settings you need to worry about. One is your PROJECT setting. That must match your original footage, as I've indicated. If it doesn't, you're going to get poor performance and video quality.
The second setting is your OUTPUT setting. That's the only setting YouTube is interested in. If you use the output settings I linked you to above -- working from a project that's been set up properly -- you will get excellent YouTube results.
    Try it. You'll see.
You'll also see, if you experiment a bit, that there's virtually no difference in the quality of FXP and MXP -- especially if you're going to display your video online. The important thing is that your PROJECT settings match that 1920x1080 AVCHD footage and that you use the YouTube output settings recommended in the FAQs.
    Try it. You will see.

  • Now that HD DVD is dead, is there a Blu-Ray plug-in for compressor 3?

Just wondering if any third party folks have provided a plug-in for compressor 3 (similar to something like Flip4Mac) that would allow burning to Blu-Ray media?
    Thanks, Rob.

    Jon,
I think the rush will start and it will be very much like VHS to DVD. I already know many friends whom I would consider NOT "into" movies, TV, electronics and for the first time they're upgrading from standard TV set to the now very affordable 1080p HD TVs and look to pick up a 1080p DVD player just cause they now have a TV that can do HD. A lot of new owners are wanting to "expose" the true quality of their HD TV and no better way to do that than with a HD capable player. Go to retail stores (BestBuy) and you'll be amazed at how many folks are walking the Blu-Ray section -- people you'd not expect to see, like a Mom with her 2 you kids looking at Walt Disney titles. It's happening and it's happening now.
As far as upgrading ones entire DVD library, I agree, probably only the really good ones will be duplicated.
Also agree that Blu-ray is another temporary format that will last maybe 10 years or so. However, we'll need a significant US network upgrade before we can support everything being distributed over airwaves and wires. Our current US network infrastructure is too weak to support elimination of hard copies. Just look at folks like Comcast, DirectTV, Dish, etc. -- their HD content is seriously compressed and it shows. Still way better than SD, but broadcast HD vs. blu-ray HD and the difference is obvious, blu-ray just destorys broadcast HD in image quality (especially when it comes to motion).
    Rob
