Proper serial connections for Sun Fire v250

I recently purchased a (gently) used Sun Fire v250 for use as a workstation. The machine had a graphics card installed by a previous owner, but I accidentally reset the factory defaults on the SCC (I was having a boot problem, and apparently a brain problem).
My question is, how do I connect over serial to make the default boot up options 'screen' instead of 'ttya'? I know from the oracle docs that I need a specific type of serial cable, but I'm unsure where exactly I can go about finding this. Also, once I get the cable what software (for *NIX or windows) can I use to reset the SCC?
Thanks,
John Lambert

Dychron, Inc.Search for a cisco console cable .... this is a typically a 9 pin to RJ 45 ... usually less than say $10 on at least well known auction site.
If you laptop/desktop does not have a serial get a usb to serial converter as well.
If you have a linux desk OS then it is possible to connect to a serial connection ... from solaris you would use tip .... from linux typically use 'cu' (built it) ... if I remember correctly.
Or use recent versions of PuTTY from windows. ... which can also be configured for serial.

    I have just experienced this issue while patching Solaris 10 on a V240 system using Live Upgrade.
    The issue was resolved by performing a failsafe boot from the console ("boot -F failsafe"), splitting the (new/alt) root mirror, mounting the primary half, performing fsck several times (as filesystem issues were apparrent), then mounting the slice and installing the new bootblock using the version of installboot from the new root and rebuilding the boot archive manually:
    # mount /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s4 /a
    #  /a/usr/sbin/installboot /a/usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s4
    # bootadm update-archive -R /aI note that the OpenSolaris bug linked to above lists four criteria for reproducing this problem:
    1. Install u6 ( SUNWCreq ( no mkisofs so we build ufs boot archive )
    2. Limit /tmp to 512M ( so forcing the ufs build to happen in /var/run
    3. Have seperate /var ( bootadm.c only lofs nosub mounts / when creating the alt root for DAP patching build of boot archive )
    4. Install 139555-08
    The system I was patching met the last three of these, but not the first one (pkginfo does not show SUNWCreq as being installed). However, this was not an OpenSolaris system, which may make a difference.

  • ISO image for Sun Fire v60x diagnostics CD

    The only thread I can find on this diagnostic CD is from 2006:
    Re: ISO image for Sun Fire v65x diagnostics CD...
    The link posted in the forum:
    "Sun Fire(tm) V60x, V65x Diagnostic CD 4.0
    This distribution offers the Diagnostic CD image (Sun Fire(tm) V60x, V65x Diagnostic CD Release 4.0) supporting Sun Fire V60z and V65z products.
    http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=441f6709" (The download link on the page does not work).
    Does not work due to the shift from Sun to Oracle.
    Can anyone point me in the right direction for the file? I've been searching for months.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
    it should be possible to locate these files via the migrated (Sun) System Handbook.
    This is a blog entry about the new location of the System Handbook (review the 3rd comment)
    http://blogs.sun.com/patch/entry/goodbye_sunsolve_helloooo_mos
    Maybe the user Nik (http://forums.oracle.com/forums/profile.jspa?userID=826741) can help to locate the download. He is very active on these forums and an Oracle employee.
    I don't have a MOS account, otherwise I would have been able to confirm if this download is still available. I guess due to the fact that Oracle contracts are more "fine grained", it's possible that downloads only for the systems covered by your service contract are visible.

  • 300Gb SAS disk support for Sun Fire V445

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me if 300Gb 10K SAS disks are compatible and supported by Oracle for Sun Fire V445's? The disks I have in mind are Sun FRU PN: 540-7869-01.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Richard

    Thanks for your post.
    I am finding Oracle's approach to hardware very frustrating. Their ultra conservative approach seems to be motivated by a desire to driving customers to newer, more expensive systems. Can't fit you data on 16 300GB SAS drives in a x4250 that cost $20K - why you can buy a new pillar system for $121,000! Never mind one aught to be able to use 1TB drives.
    And the cost of SUN's drives! I mean its not like they actually make them. No, they take Seagate drives, put them in a fancy bracket and charge 10x more!
    I am really wondering how much longer I will stay with Oracle! I mean my PC can hold more data than my x4250 that cost 15x more! And Linux may soon have the ZFS capability. So why Oracle?

  • How can I connect to sun fire v125 with serial mgr port by hyperterminal

    Hi there!
    My c.o. got a sun fire v125 server.My mission is finish setting up the server.But as I followed the sun
    fire v125's document, it aint be connected to this server with serial mgr port by using windows xp hyperterminal .
    My step as:
    step1. Find the original RJ45 net cable from the v125 box, and put one side into
    Serial MGR Port of V125.
    step2. Combined the RJ45 net cable's other side with DB-9 converter,
    then plug the DB-9 converter into the PC's serial port(9 pins).
    step3. start the pc(windows xp sp2), and then creat a hyperterminal link in COM1 as:
    Bits/Sec--9600, DataBits--8, Parity--None, Stop bits--1, Flow control--Xon/Xoff
    And then pause connect. make it hang up.
    step4. push the sun fire v125 power button. after 1mins, resume the hyperterminal,
    connect to the v125.
    as above all is all my step here. Somewhere incorrect?if theres no problem, why can't I receive the
    "sc> " promote?
    Theres only one thing what i can do is input from keyboard....?
    I had known that there will be promoted the "sc> " after you start the connection of hyperterminal with the correct steps?
    BTW,I had input "#." with enter key, but it doesnt work!
    Is there anybody met this problem as mine? Or can you give me some hits?
    Thank you for your reading.

    Im sorry for replying so late.
    I'd solved it long time ago.
    finally I found I made a mistake that I connect the Serialport Cable which came from PC
    to the RJ45(NIC) port which came from Sun Server :-@
    If you still can not get the prompts, check these parameters of your hyperterminal:
    connect a terminal or a terminal emulator (PC or workstation) to the SC serial management port.
    Configure the terminal or terminal emulator with these settings:
    * 9600 baud
    * 8 bits
    * No parity
    * 1 Stop bit
    * No handshaking

  • Oracle VM Server 2.0 for Sun Fire v240?

    Hi all,
    I am searching and trying all day long to install Oracle VM Server on SPARC 64 Sun Fire v240.
    I still can not find information is it supported or not?
    I have Oracle Solaris 10 5.10 Generic_142909-17 sun4u sparc
    the CPUs are UltraSPARC-IIIi (portid 0 impl 0x16 ver 0x34 clock 1503 MHz).
    I installed OVM_Server_SPARC-2_0 from https://edelivery.oracle.com/
    Anyway the command ldmconfig returns that This is not supported by my platform!
    In the release notes of Logical Domain Manager 1.2, 1.3 and VM Server 2.0 is written the supported hardware and I can not see the v240, but I see
    Supported Platforms:
    Sun Fire and SPARC Enterprise T1000 Servers
    Sun Fire and SPARC Enterprise T2000 Servers
    Probably this sun fire is not Sun fire v240 but it is sun fire t1000?!
    What do you think - is my server supported for any of these versions? Is virtualization possible?
    Also I can not download version 1.3 because it's moved to oracle my support section but it was free?
    Need your help and support :)
    Thanks a lot.

    A T1000 servers does not show V240.

  • Tools and Drivers for Sun Fire x2200 M2

    Does any one have an extra Tools and Drivers Disc for a Sun Fire x2200 M2? Or have the ability to give me an iso for it.
    Oracle has locked down the ability to download a copy unless your under support which I highly doubt is legal considering that you can't do several things without the disc.
    Please help

    No one is going to jeopardize their MOS credentials by giving to for free
    what they had to pay money for. They would be subjecting themselves to possibly having all their service contract privileges cancelled by Oracle.

  • For SUN FIRE

    Hi,
    I have a question.
    We purchased a SUN FIRE 240, preinstalled with Solaris
    10.
    Can we install Solaris 2.6 in SUN FIRE 240?
    Because our existing application is running with SUN
    SPARC and Solaris 2.6.
    SunOS scn5 5.6 Generic_105181-15 sun4u sparc
    SUNW,UltraAX-MPSystem = SunOS
    Node = scn5
    Release = 5.6
    KernelID = Generic_105181-15
    Machine = sun4u
    BusType = <unknown>
    Serial = <unknown>
    Users = <unknown>
    OEM# = 0
    Origin# = 1
    NumCPU = 2
    Thanks and regards,
    Jo.

    No, you can not use Solaris 2.6 on that system.
    You must use Solaris 8 or newer, and even with Solaris 8 the oldest distribution that understands how to manipulate that UltraSPARC-IIIi hardware would be:
    Solaris 8 HW 12/02
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireV240/Sun FireV240.html
    Furthermore, I don't believe you could even boot the system to 32-bit mode, but will need to take advantage of the 32bit compatibility mode designed into Sol8, Sol9, and Sol-10. (nevermind how that would cripple the computer's performance abilities.)
    If the application vendor cannot assure you that the program will function on newer OS's then I'd consider finding another vendor. Solaris 2.6 went EOL a <i>loooong</i> time ago.

  • Looking for the right KVM drawer and switch for SUN Fire v240 and v880

    Hi,
    We have Sun Fire v240, v880, and four dell servers in a Shark Rack. The LCD monitor and keyboard drawer and the KVM switch were part of the original installation from Shark Rack. The switch and the monitor stop responding from time to time so I am looking for a replacement.
    I am surprised that the prices for the KVM drawer are very different from different manufactures. I was just wondering whether I really need a SUN ready certified KVM drawer. If anyone has any experiences(good or bad) with getting a new KVM, please share it with me.
    If the KMV drawer is compatible with SUN systems, do I need to install any patch on the system or it's simply plug and play?
    Thanks!

    For most SPARC based Sun Servers you do not need a KVM switch, but merely a terminal switch which you can attach to the console port of the Sun Server. There are plenty of Terminal Servers to choose from, the most recent i bought was a Cyclade, which works very well and allows you to ssh to a console..

  • DVD Writer for Sun Fire V440

    I was wondering if anyone had found a DVD writer that will work with the Sun Fire V440. I would like an internal drive if possible but an external device would also be acceptable.

    Hello,
    the V440 uses a slimline drive like these ones in notebooks.
    Sun doesn't offer a slimline DVD writer (only full-height).
    You might be tempted to install a slimline DVD writer for notebooks or server, but you have to keep two things in mind:
    - Installing non-Sun or unsupported components voids your warranty/service contract.
    - Slimline drives have no jumpers to select master/slave or cable-select . All drives use cable-select (or reverse cable-select). This setting is determined by the firmware of the drive.
    If voiding the service contract or warranty doesn't bother you, get a drive from a dealer that is able to flash a new firmware to the drive or can sell a drive with the correct non-Sun firmware (and the correct setting cable-select or reverse cable-select).
    Regarding the brands or types of DVD drives used by Sun, review the Sun System Handbook.
    Using an external DVD writer in an USB enclosure might be possible, but the integrated USB controller (of the V440) is only USB 1.1 (supporting dual speeds of 12 and 1.5 Mbits/sec) which is insuficient for a DVD writer.

  • Two servers with redundant connections for Sun StorEdge 3320 SCSI arrays

    Hello All,
    I read in the "Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation and Service Manual" that it's possible to setup "two servers with redundant connections" but I never see a detailed schema to do this. I read also the "Best Pratices Guide" but this case is not mentioned. Is it really possible ?
    My objective is to split a Sun StoreEdge 3320 SCSI array between two hosts with dual redundant scsi connection.
    Thanks in advance for your answers.
    Francois.

    At first this sounded easy, but looking at the parts listing for the 3320 seems to indicate otherwise. They're listing different part numbers for the chassis and midplane...
    371-0105 chassis & midplane for JBOD
    371-0106 chassis & midplane for RAID array
    There are also different part numbers for the I/O boards....
    370-7655 RAID SCSI I/O module
    370-7713 JBOD SCSI I/O module
    I can see what the difference is between the I/O modules, but am unsure of what differences if any are in the chassis and midplane. Seems like there's more involved here than what it would be worth to try and make it work. Perhaps the cost of a second HBA would be the lesser of two evils..........

  • Sun Fire V250 U320

    Hello
    Could someone please tell me if a U320 HBA is needed to support U320 disks in a V250 Solaris 5.9 environment?
    -Best regards

    Hello,
    a U320 HBA is needed to support U320 disks in a V250 Solaris 5.9 environment?
    the internal/integrated controller is Ultra160 SCSI Multimode (SE/LVD). Therefore the internal disks (already U320 capable !) operate at that speed/mode.
    You can add a hba to support U320 for external disks.

    Dear All,
    Sorry, if I ask this question to this forum again. Yesterday, I tried to shutdown SUN Fire 4800 machine. It is the same machine which I asked to all of you before.
    At "OK" prompt, I typed *#.* in order to go to SC (System Controller) to shutdown the Machine. (As I know that "OK" prompt just shutdown the OS level)
    But, I got the Error message.. These are commands that I have typed, but still did not work
    {12} ok ~#
    ERROR: do_interpret: no such symbol "~#"
    ERROR: undefined word
    {12} ok ~.
    ERROR: do_interpret: no such symbol "~."
    ERROR: undefined word
    {12} ok #.
    ERROR: do_interpret: no such symbol "#."
    ERROR: undefined word
    {12} ok ~#
    ERROR: do_interpret: no such symbol "~#"
    ERROR: undefined word
    {12} ok #
    ERROR:
    I also tried to type command :(This comamand I got from SUN Firev4800 manual reference)
    OK ctrl - ]
    I connect to SUN Fire 4800 using serial cable (DB25) to USB port at my laptop, using either "Hyperterminal" or "TeraTerm"
    -Bit persecond : 9600
    -Data Bit : 8
    -Parity : None
    -Stop Bits : 1
    -Flow Control : None
    I can see the screen and typed "init 0" to go to "OK" prompt.But it still does not work. What happen? What should I do? For this case, is there any influence from "keyboard" layout (because I use my laptop keyboard) ?
    Note : I also tried typed *"init 5"* to shutdown the server, but it still go to "OK" prompt
    Please suggest...
    Thanks for any help
